A few works-in-progress. This pile of fabric came from a fun fabric swap with Trish. I'm putting together a Christmas quilt. Don't ask me what I'm doing, I really don't know myself. I'm kind of making it up as I go along. I had one thing in mind and I tried it and didn't like it, so I hacked some more up and I'm trying something else. I like how I can now refer to my quilting mistakes as "improv quilting" and sound so much more creative and cool all at the same time. I will share the final results win or loose.
I've been trying to find more embroidery hoops for a wall collage in my daughter's room for a while now. I've had an especially hard time finding small ones. This week I hit the jackpot at the thrift store. Yay! I found 7 small and 6 medium and got them all for about $8. YES!After the last post, a few people asked me how I find my good thrift finds. Here it is: sheer luck. I have no great tips or secrets. I don't have a ton of time to scour every thrift store and I don't want to accumulate a lot of stuff I don't need, so I'm pretty selective. In fact I have just one that I hit on occasion. Maybe it helps that I generally just stick with the one because I know exactly where to go in that store and I can do a pretty quick walk through of my hot spots. And it's totally hit or miss. Sometimes I find something fantastic, most of the time not. The last time I went I spent about 10 minutes because I had kids with me and we were only supposed to be looking for Halloween costumes and embroidery hoops. No luck that day. I just happened to take a detour past the pyrex and spotted the green bowl. Total luck. That's all.
This last time I went I was dropping off 4 giant bags worth of cleaned-out-closets (LOVE that feeling). I ran in to check for hoops and got lucky. But didn't come home with much else. Just totally hit or miss. Luckily for me, it was a hit that day.
Here are some of the fabrics I'm using. Once again, I will post a finished picture as soon as I finish. I'm hoping to work on this project today.
And finally, a little pile of inspiration. I recently ordered a bunch of random fabrics from Fresh Squeezed Fabrics. Some Ruby, Sandi Henderson's Secret Garden, a Strawberry Fields print that I love, a little Joel Dewberry, . . and when they arrived I was so smitten with how they looked all together. I feel another project coming on.
Hope Saturday is (was?) good where you are. It's a rainy, blustery day here. Perfect for staying inside and working on projects and not feeling guilty because I should be outside doing yard work.
Also thanks for the very nice comments on the last post. There were some I could not respond to personally because they didn't have email addresses attached, but I was very touched by all of them. Thank you, thank you.
And I'm linking up to WIP Wednesday!

I love that you find stuff at the thrift store! I'm pretty sure I go to the same one and I actually found two dresses for my girls last time! I was shocked. I think I'm too impatient for thrifting. Alas.
ReplyDelete"Improv quilting." Love it!
ReplyDelete"Improv quilting." I love it!
ReplyDelete"Improv quilting" sounds perfect! I think I do a lot of that too :)
ReplyDeleteIt's windy, snowy, and very cold here in Idaho. But perfect day for holiday projects.
That bottom pile of fabrics is just divine - so fresh and soft. I wish I could cleverly group fabrics together like that.
ReplyDeleteYou've got lots going on over there Amy!
ReplyDeleteLove your hoop collage ,wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAmy,
ReplyDeleteI just love your attitude about improv quilting. Maybe that's how all great ideas come about, who knows?
Love your fresh ideas and fun stories. Thanks so much for sharing and giving me a little boost today!
Julie
I pass a thrift store many times a week taking Jammer to and from school. I think this week I'll have to stop in to see what sorts of things they have. Thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteI just got some Ruby also!!! we both are lucky girls! loving your embroidery wall hanging design...I had three in my craft room but I am gonna move them into my laundry room (saw a cute idea on Pinterest or another blog)
ReplyDeletebeautiful day here in AZ, about 76 perfect degrees :)
That embroidery hoop decoration looks adorable! Can't wait to see a finished picture. :)
ReplyDeleteGotta love the whole improv technique, nothing is ever wrong :oD
ReplyDeleteYay on the great thrift store finds, I never have time to go scouring charity shops here, as there aren't any anywhere near me, so I just have to admire other people's finds!
Loving the new fabric pile too, looking forward to seeing what it turns into :o)
Thrifting is definitely hit or miss. I went to an antique store (expecting lofty prices) and walked away with a Pyrex dish for 25 cents! Happiness! You are going to have such fun with those hoops. Enjoy playing with your new fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI adore all those fabrics! Great choices. I never have any luck in second hand shops but then maybe I need to go in them a bit more!!
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely colors in the whole post. That is going to be a fun quilt out of the new ones.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful fabrics! I love what you're doing with the hoops -- can't wait to see them finished!
ReplyDeleteLove the Countdown to Christmas fabric! I've made a couple of quilts with it. Your wall collage is going to be so awesome! Great fabrics. Can't wait to see more of both projects!
ReplyDeletelove those hoops. sarah jane is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute fabrics!
ReplyDeleteI love the hoop idea for freshening up a rooms decor, may have to copy cat you for madams bedroom!
ReplyDeletemy last project turned from a thoroughly planned mini quilt to an "improv" mini quilt as well! Like thrift shopping, I'm totally hit or miss or improv (I've tossed a few blocks because of that)! I really like the stack you got from Fresh Squeezed fabrics and am looking forward to seeing what you do with those!
ReplyDeleteSew in love with all the colors and prints. Makes me sigh!
ReplyDeleteAwesome thrift store find! :-)
