Blogiversary Giveaway-palooza

IMG_2627 I decided to have a party. Seven years ago today I decided to finally gird up my loins, throw caution to the wind, (plus a bunch of other cliches)…

…and start a blog.

Here’s what a wrote lo those many years ago:

This summer I discovered the… mom-blog world. Or at least a fun little fraction of it. And it was amazing to discover other people like me!! Other moms who are home with busy little kids who still find time to quilt and sew! It was like when Dorothy walks out of her little black and white Kansas cabin into the technicolor land of Oz. I was so inspired by so many other women! When my husband came home, I told him I felt like I’d found a ton of new friends.  So I’m taking the plunge and starting my own…”

I still remember saying that to my husband about feeling like I’d found a bunch of new friends, and he looked at me, a little worried about my mental health. And my “imaginary” friends. lol.

IMG_2761And as I look back at what has happened and evolved over those 7 years, I’m a little blown away. (Not only by how much my life has changed since then – we live in a different house, my kids are a lot bigger and I now have a lot less hair and step on a lot fewer toy cars. And, embarrassingly, I probably have a lot more fabric. *cringe* But I’m working on that!)

IMG_2698-001I am also blown away by how many opportunities and connections have come into my life that never would have happened if I hadn’t just jumped in. As I look back at those early blog posts, it was all SO far from perfect, a little scattered and random, my photography was pretty pathetic, and I was still trying to find my voice.

But I’m SO GLAD I DID IT.

The best part of this whole adventure is the real-life connections and friends I’ve made along the way – that I never would have met if I hadn’t tried something scary. Those imaginary friends have become real-life friends!

IMG_2771

(Here are a few images from when I was working on some of those earliest tutorials…)

So a few great lessons here:

  • When facing something outside your comfort zone: Just jump in. Do it. Plug your nose and close your eyes if you have to, but jump!
  • Done is better than perfect. Don’t wait until you’ve got it all figured out. Give yourself room to grow along the way.

And most of all, I wouldn’t be here without you nice people who stop by to visit. I’m especially thankful to those who leave such kind and encouraging comments when you have a minute. (I know life is busy!)

So to celebrate, I thought would be fun to giveaway a whole bunch of stuff, including giveaways of some of my very favorite things from generous sponsors and 7 curated bundles and goodies from me. A huge thank you to my generous sponsors for making this happen!! Here are the goods:

Finally, one more thank you for the support and encouragement you’ve generously shown me over the past 7 years. For visiting this blog, or buying a pattern, or supporting my sponsors, I truly thank you. (or for voting for me in the Bloglovin’ awards earlier last month.  I did not win, but the kind support from so many of you, meant so much. Heck, just to be nominated in the first place, was pretty cool!)

Toni Anne Potter says

I started reading quilting blogs around 07-08, when my son was in elementary school. It’s wonderful to find people who enjoy the same things, like friends form all over the world. My favorite part of reading blogs is tutorials and to realize that there are many different ways to accomplish the same things. I LOVE your the last photo of you sewing with you little ones feet sticking out under the table with cars all around. ?That brings back so many memories of my son and sewing. Please keep up the great blogging, for so many of us this is what keeps us connected to the quilting world. Thank you for giving us a place to look forward to going for a quilting break. ;-> Toni Anne

Olfa Cutting mat and Rotary Cutter:

Kristen says

I have enjoyed reading your blog because you are down to earth, kind and don’t seem to be caught up in some of the catty things that others in the quilting world are caught up in. Congrats on the blog-iversary!

Fat Quarter Shop bundle:

Karen Seitz says

Amy – yours is the first blog I started following, and I have loved every post. Besides sharing tutorials and tips with all of us, you have generously answered specific questions I have emailed to you when working on one of your designs. Congratulations on 7 years of blogging, and I look forward to many more years of posts from you. Thank you for all you do for the quilting community!

(Edit)

Wow, 7 years! Amazing! I love the tutorials you have, especially the Quilting 101 Series, and I feel like your tips have helped me be a better sewist, as well as quilter.

Sally Christiansen

Happy blog anniversary! Your blog was the very first blog of any kind I started reading several years ago. You are always so down to earth and make no bones about trying to juggle home, husband, kids, quilting, church, and just life. I love your honesty and your beautiful sewing. thank you for all you share as it helps all of us know that life doesn’t have to be a struggle.

Bundles from me:

BABs says

It’s people like you who have enriched my retirement and kept me company. Thank you.

Allison Erb says

Yay seven years! I love reading your blog, and have just started a quilt from your book! As a mom of two young kids (3 years and 5 months) I really love the “quickness” of your patterns. They allow me to have a creative outlet but don’t take up all of my limited spare time!

Becca says

Congratulations on seven years! That’s amazing. I remember meeting you at American Quilting at their Moonlight Madness sale a few years ago, when I bought one of your patterns to make a quilt kit for my mom for Christmas. She finally finished it a few weeks ago. Love your blog!

Connie says

I never expect to win these giveaways (although 7 is my lucky number!) but I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your blog. I don’t know how I found you and I am a fairly new follower . . . both here and on Facebook. You’ve inspired me to get back into making quilts (I have already utilized a couple of your tutorials) and I am seriously considering revving up my old blog. I’ve missed it! Congratulations on your milestone! I love seeing creative women gain success!

kathyinmn says

7 years? That’s amazing! Congratulations! One thing that helps me connect with a blog is when you talk about how you fit in quilting and pattern making and everything else when you have family, kids, husband, etc. I love when you post about how your include your kids, stuff like that.

Debra holster says

You don’t know me, but you taught me to quilt! After my husband died 6 years ago, I was looking for a new creative outlet. I had sewn for more years than I can remember, but had never quilted. I set out looking for quilt instruction online and found your blog. Finding this new craft helped me with my grief, and gave me something new to focus on. Later, I participated in your Virtual Quilting Bee (and would love to do another!). Keep up the good work. You never know how you can affect someone’s life.

Melinda Meehan says

I laughed right out loud when you said imaginary friends. Love the way you wright..lets your readers get to know you. Being a new self taught sewer I rely on blogs like yours to help me learn, so thank you for all the hard work! Oh how I could really use these prizes, starting to sew is expensive.. Slowly getting supplies on a never ending list , lol. Congratulations on your nomination, well deserved!

Congratulations on 7 years. That’s a long time! No 7 yr itch for you, eh? I am so glad you took the plunge 7 yrs ago and fought through the doubts of starting – I was exactly the same. Funny how I feared ‘what will people say’ – of course I know now that no one gave a ‘you know what’ about my blog so I don’t know what I was worried about. Good luck for the next 7 years – I’d love to see more of the same, honestly, I love what you do just as you are. Although, perhaps more Europe photos….off you go!

Hi Amy! Thank you for sharing your quilting with all of us. Your work is an inspiration to many, and my quilting wouldn’t be the same without you!
This summer I shared your post about your visit to Rocky Mountain Quilts with my parents, and while vacationing in Maine they visited the shop and purchased a gorgeous set of 1930’s Dresden Plate blocks which they gifted to me. 🙂 Not sure exactly what to do with the blocks, I turned to your blog again and found your Vintage-Inspired Dresden Plate Quilt. Using your quilt as my inspiration, I pieced a similar quilt top, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! Now I’m looking for a long arm quilter. Any recommendations?

You don’t know me, but you taught me to quilt! After my husband died 6 years ago, I was looking for a new creative outlet. I had sewn for more years than I can remember, but had never quilted. I set out looking for quilt instruction online and found your blog. Finding this new craft helped me with my grief, and gave me something new to focus on. Later, I participated in your Virtual Quilting Bee (and would love to do another!). Keep up the good work. You never know how you can affect someone’s life.

Thank you so much for all the information and help. You even answer emails-are you sure there isn’t a “s” underneath you shirt for “superlady”? I love the blog-everything: pictures of projects, confessions about WIPs, but I still struggle with color so anything you write about fabric choice is read and reread by me! Aw, congratulations! I only found your blog a few weeks ago and just love it. I was so happy when the library had your book and now I’m inspired to use 20 Betty Dear fat quarters I bought years ago (I always meant to do a different quilt with the fabric, but so much time has passed that the original plan no longer makes my heart thump, so …)!

Congrats on your seven years! I’ve been reading your blog for over a year and enjoy the way you share while keeping it real. Topics to consider – I would suggest that you talk a bit about how you approach color and fabric selection, before or after deciding on a quilt design.

Wow, 7 years! Amazing! I love the tutorials you have, especially the Quilting 101 Series, and I feel like your tips have helped me be a better sewist, as well as quilter.

One thing I would like to see are tips for layering quilts. I can never get the layers tight enough that there aren’t wrinkles in them when I put them together. I have tried taping the bottom layer to the floor to hold it tight, but still have struggles.

I remember meeting you when you still worked at AQ and I told you I followed your blog and how I loved that you kept things simple and real. I also took your class at Quilt Bliss and you are the same person in real life that you are on the blog. I love how you seem to prefer simple quilts and don’t worry about keeping up an image of “perfection.” It makes quilting more doable for beginners.

Congrats on 7 years, I love your blog and follow you on Instagram and Facebook. I have thought of starting a blog for years, just haven’t gotten up the courage to actually do it yet. I don’t know how I would find the time for it, I can barely find time to sew. I would love to know how you manage your time day to day (family, sewing, household chores). I feel bad when I sit down to sew, there’s always something that needs to be done around the house. I want to buy fabric everyday but groceries and bills come first. I want to share my thoughts and the items that im making, the process, like a dear diary kind of thing, oh, and im so stuck the last 10 months (i was thinking of starting it in the beginning of 2015!!). But then again, I make some thoughts like, shall I write in English, or Greek (Im greek)? shall I write in both languages? or pick one? what happens then? do I think about one target group and not the other? these kind of thoughts are in my head, hopefully i will make up my mind and dive right in, like you!!! Thank you for sharing this post, wish all the best for the followin years!!! love and hugs from Greece!!!

I totally understand that “new friends” thought, exactly how I felt after coming back to quilting as I took a break around the time blogs became so popular. If you have access to images of your patterns created by others, it would be fun to see an occasional post rounding up some from one particular pattern. Sometimes seeing a variety of “takes” on the same pattern inspires new ideas for the viewer to “make it their own”.

Please don’t change anything, just keep it coming. I just reread your Christmas tree skirt blog page yesterday and am ready to start one of my own using one piece of cloth, not a patchworky one. How about some info on how to choose low volume fabrics? From someone who does almost everything BRIGHT and BOLD, I really want to learn how to use low volumes to vary my palette 😀 Congrats on 7 years!

I started quilting early 2014 and have made over 18 different quilts in that time. My amazing assistant turned me on to your blog at the beginning of this year and I love it! I am color blind (red/green deficiency), and I don’t always trust my instincts, so your blog helps give me ideas for my projects. I would love to see more tips on how to color match in ways that would allow me to trust my decisions better.

Because I’m a weirdo, I’ve actually been reading your blog from the beginning (I just finished March 2012) since I stumbled across you a few weeks ago while searching for some tips for my first real quilt. Congratulations on 7 years and here’s to many more!

Oh, right, suggestion. Um…maybe a quick cheater’s guide to identifying patterns? I keep seeing different names of patterns and I’ve been able to figure out some of them, but there are just so many!

I am well beyond child rearing years, but had I the opportunity to have “imaginary friends “, as you call them, when my children were little, I may not have started quilting much earlier than I did. Congratulations and thanks again.

I love your tutorials, your free patterns, and especially the inspiration I feel to quilt more and be a better person. At age 40 I have decided it’s time to go back to college, so I won’t be quilting a whole lot in the future, but this is one of those things where I am taking the plunge and jumping in without looking back. Thanks for your inspiration!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post! I don’t have a blog, but could totally relate to the “just jumping right in” part. I’ve started creating my own patterns and doing long arm quilting for others and getting paid for it! It’s hard to imagine that I will actually be quilting for a career and saying bye, bye to waiting tables for good, but I truly believe it is possible now. I did like you said and just went for it, and I’ll figure it all out as I go. Learning is part of the journey and the fun!

Seven years ago I had just quit my job and moved to the middle of Nowhere Kansas. I had dial-up internet and could barely load e-mail. The blogasphere was not in my realm, nor was internet shopping. Things changed drastically for us after a fire and relocation for awhile, and I found broadband and in the process lots of those “imaginary” friends–suddenly I was no longer in the middle of Nowhere.

On the technical side, I would like to see your tutorials have a Printer friendly or PDF version (without all the comments). So much easier! Thanks for all the work you put into your blog and for sharing the patterns and examples with us. I love lots of pictures!

    Awesome giveaway girrrrl!!!!
I am so glad you asked what we would like to see as I had just been thinking of messaging a request to you…how weird is that???
I REALLY, REALLY loved your “30 gifts for quilters” post last December and I may have(ahem) emailed it to certain people who NEED to be told what to give(the Hubs…ahem, again!). So, my heartfelt request is that you do a similar posting again…so that some of us can get ideas and possibly email the list to our other halfs!

I’ve looked through some of your older posts–so much good info and inspiration! Your work is lovely.
I love the scrappy quilts the best and would enjoy seeing more of them.

I discovered your blog through the Bloglovin’Awards and voted for you and all that you do with your blog! I’ve many times thought of starting my own blog but then I’d really get nothing done! I enjoy reading your blog and I am inspired every time I visit! Thank You for offering your patterns at a wonderful price I will be purchasing before deadline. Congratulations and thank you! I remember doing a random search and coming across your “How to quilt from start to finish” series and deciding to try quilting. Sometimes I buy a fabric that I love but can’t figure out how to showcase it, maybe somthing about how build a design around a focal fabric?

Amy, Thank you, thank you for taking the plunge 7 years ago — my favorite thing about your website is looking at the “quilts I’ve made” — I’m inspired by the collage of quilts every time I look at it — and it’s been many times! I’d love to see you show and tell about quilts you’ve made — even from long ago as I’ve only been following along for a short while. And please oh please write another book! Your book is still my favorite — and I have quite a shelf full of books — your patterns are super logical to me! Thanks again!

Happy Blogiversary!!! Over the past few years I have enjoyed reading your blog and have felt as if I am hearing from a friend. What you share with us, both design and timewise is pretty awesome. I am astounded each day by how much you are able to accomplish for not only us, but your family as well. I’m feeling extremely old and unfortunately getting slower by the day, but you lift me up, and help to restore my spirit, so that when I see a lovely quilt here, I tend to think “I can do that”. Thank you for sharing your family, your time and your talent with us and may you have many more years ahead.
