Last October I hit the official 10-year mark since I started this blog. Holy Smokes. 10 years! A Decade! I can't believe it's been that long since I've been writing in this space.
I've been wanting to do a little celebration to thank all of YOU, because you are the ones who have made this experience worthwhile. It's 5 months late, but I am finally getting around to doing it.
Gosh, a lot happens in 10 years! Back then I had long hair and a lot fewer gray ones. (I also swore back then I'd never wear skinny jeans, but have since eaten those words. Dang fashion industry!)
Here's a little visual of how things have changed since that time.
Some of my children don't even remember a time before I was writing this blog. (They also don't remember a time before Smartphones and Netflix which is a little freaky...) My youngest was still in diapers when I started - he's now almost 13. Those little kids often provided hilarious content when I was getting started - I kind of miss that. Now that they're teenagers they deserve a little more privacy, but they're still funny and fun to have around, I just don't share the funny things they say - partly because they forbid it. 😉 (But it's okay - I definitely don't miss the diapers part of those little kid years.)
(Also, for those keeping track, I have 4 kids. My second daughter wasn't in the top picture for some reason. Now my oldest daughter has left for college and a mission for our church, so the second daughter filled in for the re-creation. And yes, I had to bribe them to do this.)
I thought I'd share 10 things I've learned in the past 10 years as well as some favorite photos. (I loved when Allison did this and thought I'd shamelessly copy her. Not her exact list of course - though a lot of it was so relatable - so hopefully I've got some additional words of wisdom to offer.) This blog has evolved and I have learned a lot over the years.
1. Perfection is overrated. One of my favorite mantras for years. I first started teaching beginning quilting classes about 14 years ago at the local shop where I worked. It was SO much fun introducing new recruits to the love and joy of quilting (and fabric collecting). But I always felt sad for those who would get frustrated and hung-up on small imperfections like points not matching up perfectly - especially when they were just trying something for the first time.
Ever since then I've been on a crusade to get people to let go of perfection. For us first-world folks, this sewing stuff is just for fun! This hobby is meant to relieve stress, not add to it. Remember the big picture - that is all most people who admire your creations will see anyway. And they'll be so impressed. Little flaws are part of being a human. Don't let the quest for perfection hold you back from creating (and living!) with abandon.
2. Sewing is good for your mental health (and should stay that way). Creativity is good for you! And so is working with your hands. I remember Jen Kingwell talking about a therapist whose office was down the street from her original quilt shop. Frequently the therapist gave her patients Jen's shop's card and told them to sign up for a class. This therapist found that learning a new skill with their hands was one of the most helpful treatments for her patients. I believe it!
But, again, don't let the perfectionism creep in. That's not what it's all about. If you need some practical tips for sparking your own creativity or regaining your "sewjo" Samantha Dorn shared some great thoughts on Sparking Creativity here and 5 Ideas to Help you Feel Motivated here.
3. Try something new! Take a class, learn a new technique. It's fun to expand your horizons and your repertoire. If you have a local shop or guild, ask about upcoming classes. If you live far away from or your schedule prevents you from attending in person, there's lots of options online from places like Blueprint, CreativeLive, or YouTube. (If you want, you can hang out with me in my online class here!) Not only because it's fun to learn something new, but it's also the best place to make new friends who share your same interests. Those have become some of the best friends I've found. Which leads me to...
4. Put yourself out in the world to make new friends. Quilting friends are some of my favorite. (And not just because they don't think you're a weirdo for cutting up fabric and sewing it back together.) Before I started this blog, I felt pretty isolated in my life. I was home with small children during the days and I didn't have a ton of real life friends that lived close. I remember the first time I discovered blogs in 2007 and then discovered quilting blogs (I think Crazy Mom Quilts was the first quilt blog I found), I felt like I'd found a bunch of new friends who got me. They were at my same stage of life and liked quilting (at that point I didn't have any real life friends my age who liked to sew).
I remember telling my husband "I've found so many new friends!" and I think he was a little worried at first that all of my friends "lived in my computer". But so many of those people have now become friends in real life too. And I've found so many more by going to retreats and classes or by simply connecting online. Living across the country and around the world, I never would have met many of them before the interwebs. Isn't it the coolest thing that we can now connect with friends who share our same interests no matter where they live?
The above picture is one of my favorite moments that resulted from starting this blog - when Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts walked into my booth for my first fabric line, Gingham Girls, at Quilt Market in 2017. If someone would have told me 10 years ago that both of those things would happen one day, I wouldn't have believed it! (I'm still pinching myself now!)
5. Which brings me to this one: Get off your phone. Make something with your hands. Go for a walk outside. Join a quilting group or a guild. Connect with people in person. As lucky as we are to have this online connectivity, real life relationships are even better!
6. You can’t do it all. Especially not all at once. You can do anything but not everything. Trust me on this one – it’s a sure-fire recipe for burn-out. Exhaustion doesn't make you successful - just exhausted. Learn to say No more that you say Yes, and then only say Yes to the things that matter most. I’m still learning this one – part of accomplishing what you really want to do means saying No to a lot of superficial stuff that can distract you. You can't do it all. Greg McKeown's book Essentialism was life-changing for me. I highly recommend it. You can also see Greg on YouTube here and here.
7. Stick with your goals, but consistently re-evaluate them and make sure you’re not letting short-term clutter (i.e. Facebook, Netflix, etc. ? ) get in the way of the most important priorities. Save your best efforts for that which has greatest value. At the same time, be true to yourself and what YOU like to do. Not what you feel you "should" do. I feel like I'm finally learning what works best for me - which is often different from what works best for someone else.
8. Do Good. Few things make you feel better than doing something for someone else with no expectation of anything in return. I've learned a lot about sewing for a good cause. I've been inspired watching so many talented sewists with giant hearts touch the lives of so many people who have experienced tragedy and natural disasters. One of the beauties of this age of hyper-connectivity is the chance to gather like-minded folks together for a good cause. It feels good - and is healing for ourselves at times too - to sew.
In conjunction with that, I've seen the goodness of so many people in small and simple ways. You never know when a seemingly small show of kindness may have a big impact on someone. Here's a couple of my favorites including one that happened to me years ago.
9. DON’T COMPARE your journey to anyone else’s. Everyone’s journey is different, but everyone’s journey is exciting. Stay on your path and enjoy the people and opportunities that come your way. Focus on what is in your control, not on what’s out of your control.
Cheer other people on. Be happy for other people’s achievements and successes. I’m a big believer in Abundance. If you choose is to see the world as a place where there is enough success and happiness for everyone, you’re going to find a lot more of success and happiness in your own life.
10. Finally – don’t fear adversity or struggling for something you want – sometimes it's the unexpected challenges that will change the direction of our lives in remarkable ways. That's part of my story - with out some struggles early in our family life I never would have pushed myself out of my comfort zone and got my first job in the quilting industry. And I never would have dreamed where that path would take me. Don't be afraid of the bumps in the road.
Well, thanks for hanging in there with all of that long-windedness. You learn a lot of stuff in 10 years!
Finally, one more giant thank you for the support and encouragement you’ve generously shown me over the past 10+ years. Whether you've visited this blog, or bought a pattern, or supported my sponsors, or said Hi at a trunk show or class, I am truly grateful! You have been the best part of this blogging experience.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sending love and well-wishes and happy quilting vibes to all of you. xoxoxo

I stumbled cross your blog for the first time this morning!! Loved it! Agree with so many of your 10 things learned. I had a friend that was going through a rough time and I gave her a pattern for a huge dresden plate to make a centerpiece for a table. It helped her so much to use her hands and it helped her out of her depression. I recently finished a quilt for my sister in law and was unhappy with the "not perfect" ness of it, but I know she will love it and won't care even if she notices it. Will be back to visit your blog again. Wonderful giveaways!!
Kaitie
I love all of these so much! What a great source of encouragement!

I relate to your comments regarding getting to know some great people through quilting! My friend and I started quilting 4 years ago and we are having a blast! One of the things we most often comment on is, "I can't believe how many good friends we have made through all of this!" It really is like a second family! But of course all of the beautiful quilty goodness in our houses is just like a little bit of heaven! Thank you for your words of encouragement!
Amy L

Congratulations! Don't follow the same suit as other good quilt bloggers
who felt they had become too important to continue blogging about their new patterns
and new fabric designs.
I've your class on Craftsy and really like your way of teaching,
especially, as you didn't have a hidden agenda of trying to sell
speciality gadgets.
Unfortunately, I do not like Bluprint.
I'm an international commentator so don't expect to be included in the draw.
Just wanted to leave a comment.

Congratulations! Your blog was one of the first ones I started to follow when I began to quilt. I had a little one still in diapers under the table as well. Time flies!
Joanne
I have great admiration for you! I have all of your fabric lines❤️
Deb Weckenman
Congrats on 10 years of sharing our craft!! I especially love your retelling of the story of your connection to the ladies who artfully craft Hmong needlework. I have been lucky enough to purchase some beautiful pieces at a quilt show. It is the finest needlework around!! Have you passed the quilting bug on to any of your kids? Deb
Linda Sikorski

Loved all the points you made. Too often perfection can get in the way. I keep reminding myself that it is the journey, not the destination.
Becky Turner
I love the Point
"You can do anything but not everything."
Learning to pet the fabric and turn away because of time not talent has been a heck of a lesson for me.
Congratulations on the 10 years!!!
I read my "quilting" blogs every morning with a pot of tea and it starts my day off with talent, color and inspiration
Tracy H

Thanks for your years of great quilty sharing. I really loved your 10 year post today; lots of inspiration to forward to my sewing buddies. If I win a prize I will share it with them. The small quilting bee I found at our Senior Center (Colorado Springs) has really bloomed into good friendships with a diverse group!

Heather Johnson
Thank you for reminding me to not let perfection get in the way 🙂
Carol Poelman
Thanks Amy! I think I have been following your blog for close to 10 years....your blog is one that really made me excited about quilting, actually. My mom is a quilter, and when I became a mother I got the "itch" to quilt. But I had not seen a lot of modern quilts -- until blogs like yours! So, thank you. And thanks for always being so sincere, upbeat, and Smart. (haha.)
Kim G
Congratulations on 10 wonderful years!!! I am not sure what year I found but I am glad I did!!! Thank you for your generosity and your willingness to share your quilty adventures with us all!

Janine
Congratulations on 10 years, Amy! I enjoy reading your blog and look forward to each new quilt!
Allison Brooks
Thank you for blogging all these years. I have been quilting for 5 or 6 years now and I have always loved your posts. I completely understand how perfection can suck the joy out of creating. I quilt baby blankets for all the ladies at church, whether I know them or not. They never look for the imperfections. They are simply happy to receive one! We both have daughters on missions. Here's to another 10 years.
Tammy Howell
What a wonderful post! I agree with it all! I am also teaching at my LQS and am dismayed with the number of people who stress over perfection. I have a son on a mission. He is in Baltimore. He comes home in four months! Not that anyone is counting. Wonderful giveaways. Fingers crossed.
Brandi M Stepp
Congratulations on your milestone! What a lovely way to commemorate it. I especially love the reminder to not be defeated by trying to attain perfection. Just finish it and enjoy the process! I am really connecting with that message right now. I've recently started pulling out projects that I abandoned years ago in frustration. Now I look at them and marvel that I have such a pretty top all ready to quilt. I wish I'd had this message back then! Thanks for the great post!
Beverly Hoek
Congratulations on your 10th year of blogging. I share your love of all things quilty!!

Congratulations on your tenth anniversary, that’s really a big milestone!

Thank you for sharing your journey. I’ve followed you for a number of years and enjoy and am amazed at your creativity. Your Fabulously Fast Quilts was the first quilting book I purchased. Your patterns were perfect to encourage a desire to create more! Thank you!

Praise the Lord for His goodness to you in these years . May you be blessed with many more.

Congratulations on 10 years, Amy! I loved reading this post. I’m also glad that we got the chance to become friends in real life! I loved seeing the flash back pics from your early blog days. Congratulations to you on all of your successes and accomplishments over the years!
Bridget Kevin-Myers
you were one of my first quilting blogs! Letting go of perfection has been hard, but necessary. No one notices a less than perfect seam match when they are snuggled under a cozy quilt!
Mary Oakley
I'm new to quilting, but I've been helping our circle at church tie quilts for about 9 years now. You are so right about quilters and everyone who sews, they are the nicest, most welcoming people you'll ever meet! I'm glad I found your blog, I saw so many tutorials I want to try! Congratulations on your 10 years!
Terrie L Ruiz
Big Congrats to you on 10 years !! I Love your blog and all of your inspiration and your fabric too 🙂 !!! Now onto the next 10 Thank you thank you !!
Angie C Danilovich
Congratulations!!! And I just want to say I absolutely LOVE your Gretel line. It makes me so happy whenever I see it.

Sewing is good for your mental health! I took my first quilting class a few months after my mother died. It enabled me to meet new people and lifted my spirits. I had wanted to learn how to make a quilt for years, and I finally did it!
Danette
Congratulations on 10 years! Love the (sort of) matching photos, especially your son with the sunglasses. Teenagers can be quite awesome! Thanks so much, I am checking out your sale on patterns. If I win, my email is peterstankovich@comcast.net

I love to read your blog! It encourages me and keeps me on track. Congratulations on 10 years!
Sarah
Happy anniversary! Your bio statement about “wanting a thing that stayed done” and the how to make a quilt from start to finish tutorials made making a quilt seem very possible. It has turned into quite the hobby for me!
Christine Robinson
Congrats on 10 years of blogging. Inspiring blog, love the quilts displayed. Just signed up for your newsletter, looks like fun. Thank you
Tresann Dawson
I love your first point! Perfectionism is overrated! I'm going to try and embrace that!
Joanne Beebe

I love your re-do picture. It is amazing how children change so fast. Congratulations on 10 years. Love all the information you provide
Maria Hasler Barker
Congratulations on TEN YEARS!!! That is amazing!!
Elaine Walker
Your blog was the first blog I found. My daughter found a quilt pattern on Pinterest she wanted used for her new quilt. That picture led me to your blog and a book you authored. I started following you and that led to many other blogs. I now follow 16- 17 blogs?. Kinda crazy, but a good crazy.
elaine530@centurylink.net
Sarah
Thank you for this! I'm still a pretty new quilter (I took a class last summer and got hooked) and it's so hard to remember that I'm getting better and perfection isn't required.
Lynda H
now you know - time does fly when you're having fun....sewing is just a sideline of my real occupation - collecting fabric...
Luone
Amy, this is such a great post, with SO many wonderful words of wisdom! Thank you for being one of my friends, and especially for "walking the walk" of the things you've learned. Thanks for sharing the journey. (And tell E she needs an embroidery hoop! ?) ❤❤❤
Judi Lenviel
Congrats on 10 years! I love your common sense lessons, and I appreciate the patterns you've shared. Quilting and crocheting are new for me--since retirement--and I need all the help I can get. Thanks!
Zina Clark

Diane Butts
Your blog is so uplifting! Happy Anniversary and thank you for all of your ideas and support for quilters.
Sherry Hodgdon
Congratulations on 10 years! Love this post and your blog. Thank you for reminding me perfection is overrated! I started quilting again a year or so ago after retiring and still fight the desire for perfection. All of these points are excellent and you are doing a great job with this blog for sure. Thank you for the awesome giveaway..
Jan
Congrats on 10 years! I love reading your posts and your fabric lines! I met your sister-in-law at a workshop at her Church! What a small world. Hope you keep blogging for another 10 years.
Lisa Mongiovi
Congrats on your 10 years. Thanks for inspiring others.
Clara
Time does seem to "fly by" and 10 years doesn't seem possible. I've been following your blog for many of those 10 years. When Gingham Girls fabric came out, I was an immediate fan. It brought back memories of its long time popularity. My home ec project was an apron using gingham and my grandmother showed me how to embroider a design following the checks. Congratulations, Amy!! Here's to continuing success for you! clara-chandler@att.net
Claudia W
Your kids are adorable...in both pictures...don't tell the teens I said that though, it would be so embarrassing! (smile)
I love your "10 Things...". Number one is my mantra. I am in the throes of making a quilt for a friend and every time I see something I have to tell myself she will not see it!
All the fun things you have to give away, any one of them would be a fantastic prize!
Barbara
Congratulations on 10 years of blogging and great patterns - I also reached a 10 year milestone last October and can relate so much to your 10 lessons big time! The internet is great, but it is very easy to feel SO inadequate in comparison to all the great work shown on there every day - sometimes I feel it is better to not just look!
Best wishes for the next 10 years!
Kristi Castanette
Congratulations on your 10 year blog anniversary! I've enjoyed your blog for many years and hope you continue to blog for many years to come. I love the before and after photos of your children. My, how they've grown in ten years (but we parents stay the same - ha)!
Thank you for the great giveaways!
Judy
As a new quilter I think what you said is very helpful
Christine Gue
Wow! Time flies when you are having fun! (Or neck deep in life). Congratulations on 10 years. I really enjoy your blog and hope for you 10 more exciting, challenging and rewarding years wherever your journey takes you. 🙂
Jennifer
Thank you for all you do! I constantly come back to your tutorials and tips when I have a question about something. Your directions are clear and easy to follow. All of your patterns and fabrics spurn so many ideas that I'm sure I'll never get to them all!
Pam Kosirog
Wow! What a great way to celebrate your 10 year anniversary, thanks!
Lisa Long
Congratulate on 10 years! I love the then and now pics.
Christi
Congratulations, I look forward to your blog all the time. I am old so I learned early on that the myth of "bring home the bacon, fry it up in the pan" and well you know the rest of the story was nonsense. You are doing great. Family always comes first and then all the other things will fall in place. Here's to 10 more years.
pamelaquilts
Isn't it amazing, and terrifying how fast 10 years can go by? I've enjoyed following your blog over the years, thanks for sharing your quilting life with us!
Christy
I love all things you’ve learned. Perfectionism was the hardest for me to overcome. What was the hardest for you! Sewing is so good for my mental health and the creativity process is so relaxing. I find that I crave my sewing time if I’m not able to get to my machine. About a year and a half ago, I learned EPP so that Icould take it with me when I traveled. I’m using Gingham Girls. It’s such a happy fabric line. I saw a quilt made with it and had to have it. ☺️
Rebecca Lehmann
Congratulations on 10 years. It is amazing how fast time flys when quilting and raising a family. What wonderful advice today!
Sandra Ott
Congratulations for reaching the 10 year milestone. I love your fabric lines because I like bright primary colors. You are wise beyond your years and have a beautiful family. I saw you will be at Thanksgiving Point in September and I hope to meet your there. Thanks for your inspiring ideas.
Nancy Crump
Wow 10 years! What a great milestone! I love recreation picture and your 10 lessons. My favorite lesson is the mental health one. I have always found that when I take time to create in any medium, but especially sewing I am a happier person and a better mother. Thanks for this fun recap post!
Di
Congrats on 10 years!
Nina Keester
I just read this page and love it. I am an avid quilter, rarely miss a day either, cutting, piecing or on the longarm. However, I was drawn to the Capital Reef picture, I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, transplanted to Southern Utah in 1995, sadly now in Texas. I consider Utah home and miss it so much. Great blog I will definitely return.
Jodie
I've enjoyed reading your blog for a number of years. Congrats on 10!
Betsy
Congratulations Amy and thank you for a very meaningful post. I especially needed "get off your phone." Sometimes life overwhelms and creativity starts to seem like a luxury. It is actually a necessity at times to step away from the everyday things, get off your phone, and do something that brings you joy!
Elaine Papworth
Congratulations on your 10 years! You are one amazing woman in everything you do. I am so happy to be able to call you my friend. Here’s to many more happy anniversaries!
Kay
Happy blogaversary. It is so lovely to have a blog that is still around and inspiring people after 10 years. I so agree about the perfectionism, I am trying hard to leave mine behind because it really can get in the way of enjoying what we do. I also particularly enjoyed the link to the other post about kindness. x
Kathy Richins
I love reading your posts..wish there were more, but agree there is more to life than spending all your time on websites. Have enjoyed your fabric lines, can't decide which is my favorite...probably gingham girls.
Andrea M
Thanks for the giveaway! Congrats on blogging for over 10 years!
Tanya
I love all the quilts AND the remake of the photo. Lol. You’ve done so much in ten years! Full steam ahead girl.
Diana McVady

Such a wonderful journey. I agree that bumps in the road lead us to new paths that we wouldn't have dreamed of ourselves. Congratulations on 10 years. I enjoy your blog!

Lisa
Congratulations on ten years! I have read your blog for a few years and love how you are always encouraging and realistic.
Christine S.
Congratulations on 10 years!! Your blog was one of the very first that I found when I first started sewing and I have absolutely loved following along with you throughout the years. I am very grateful for your lessons, they have made learning to quilt quite fun.
Cherie
I love your list. I can especially relate to not trying to be perfect. It is easy to find myself not liking a project for that reason. I try to ‘just get over it’ and move on.
Tami Crook
I'm new to quilting all by myself. I learned the basics from my grandma and am now going it on my own. I found your blog through my googGo news feed and signed up to get them all the time now. I love your fabric and patterns. Little by little I am improving and Loving this.
Jill
Congratulations on 10 years! Your work is beautiful. I am a new quilter and only hope that I can someday produce a quilt half as good as yours.
Robyn O
Happy Blog Anniversary! Your blog was one of the first I’ve read when stumbling into my quilting journey a few years ago. It has been such a valuable resource for me and many others as well. Thanks for sharing with us!

Sandie @ crazy'boutquilts
The remake photo just cracks me up! I'll bet your youngest son has a great sense of humor too. 🙂 Congrats on 10+ years!!
Marla

Jane Laws
Congratulations on your success! Love your Improv Forest Quilt, so wonderful to see how you used the fabric to create uniquely individual beautiful trees within a harmonious forest.
Karen Jenners
ImI a builder and sometimes I have to step back. I love your list of"truisms". So many of us get bogged down with life. Don't go for perfection in a quilt, go for the mindless peace it gives you to create something. Jesus was perfect, I'm not. My children do not care if my points don't match, but that it keeps them warm and Mom made it. That's better than any hug I can give them. Beautiful blog. Hugs and happy sewing. Karen Jenners
Sandy Allen
Thank you for sticking around for 10 years! A lot of the blogs I used to follow are no more. I enjoy reading yours and always seem to either learn something or get inspired! Thanks to you and the sponsors for such a fun give away, too.
sherrye55

Evelyn Bryan
Great advice for living life and quilting!
Nancy Aho
Love reading about your blog and quilting story.
TheTalena
What a great journey! Congrats on 10+ years!
Margaret
Gosh, I guess that means I have been reading your blog for almost 10 years! I think I first found you from a ModaBake Shop link - a lattice quilt, as I recall (I still love that pattern). I followed your how-to-quilt tutorials, cheered you on when you wrote a book and had your 1st fabric line, and followed your lead on taking quilting into the communities of other people. Though we’ve never met, I respect you - how you’ve been as a parent and what an honest and caring person you are. My sincerest thanks for these 10 years, and best wishes for ongoing happiness in your future.
Aubrey Harns
I love your blog. I've bought your book, your patterns & the quilt I made from one of your patterns is currently on my bed. I derive ap much inspiration from you. Congratulations on your 10 year blogiversary!
Blessings,
Aubrey

"You can't do it all" hit a nerve for me this morning. I am trying to do so many things and I am lost and overwhelmed. Thanks for the book suggestion; it is a life ring tossed to a drowning woman, and I am grabbing for it! Thanks as well for continuing to blog; I so enjoy visiting here to see what you are up to and to learn new (and old) concepts. Keep up the great work!
Anita Monery
I’ve really enjoyed your positive posts, they are real and inspiring. Thank you, I’m looking forward to the next 10 years.

Jill Leslie
Congratulations on 10 years of blogging! Always fun to check in with you to see what's up.
Pat Urbeck
I loved reading your latest blog. It is amazing to look back and see what has been accomplished and how far one has grown. I agree with your 10 bullet items. I started sewing almost 3 yrs ago when a friend posted a lap quilt she made for a Veterans Honor flight via her quilt guild. of course I am now a member and have made 24 lap quilts for veterans, 371 pillowcases for the One Million Pillowcase challenge, walker bags for the local nursing home and ditty bags for the division of Children and Family services. When asked why, because it gives me purpose and so much joy in my life.
Linda S
Congrats on 10 Years!! I love this post. I have been following your blog for about 6 years I think, and it has been interesting and fun, watching your journey. As much as I love quilting, for me it is still just a hobby as my 'real' job takes so much of my time. While retirement from my job is still 15+ years away yet, blogs like yours have inspired me to look for opportunities and ways that will allow quilting to be more than just a hobby (and maybe allow me to actually use my stash instead of hoarding it. Thank you!
LYNN M BARBATO
Congrats on 10 years of blogging. Your quilts are amazing!
Sandy Volk

Those pictures are so cute. Quilting is such a great hobby, I have a friend who is always trying to be perfect. I keep telling her no one will see it when its done! Thank you for the wonderful giveaways.
Elizabeth E.
I don't know if you'll have time to read all your comments, but I just wanted to leave a Congratulations on your blogging, your success, and retaining your humanity and self in the process. Thank you for all that you do, and hope you have many more years of quilting ahead!!
And here's my "coincidence" story for today: I had been looking in my Barbara Brackman book this morning, hunting up a new block for a potential Christmas Quilt. I picked one out, drew it up in my quilt software, and when I was reading your blog, there it was, in one of your photos illustrating this post. Now I know how it looks, so thank you very much! (again)
Debi

Happy 10 years! I made a quilt for my son from your Broken Dishes tutorial...it was meant to be ready for when he was born but I finished it after he turned 2. Diana Snyder
Congratulations on 10 years!! Loved reading the 10 things you have learned in the past. I am fairly new to quilting and I need to remember to let go of the need for perfection. I am having fun. Thank you.
Linda Kay Smith
Congratulations on 10 years and here's to 10 more. I especially relate to your comments on not getting hung up on perfection. I've quilted quite a few years now but still get frustrated when my block has a cut-off point, or my seams don't match perfectly or the other "imperfections". I have to work on letting it go and remember that I do these quilts for me and not for the quilt police..
Mary S
Congratulations Amy, and thank you for 10 years of blogging. Your tips, projects, toils, and successes have been an inspiration! My mantra is from Frost's poem …"and miles to go before I sleep …" Here's to lifelong learning!

And I love to see the pictures you post both for the beautiful quilts and some of the familiar places in the background. Capitol Reef is one of our family's favorite places! Looking forward to following your next 10 years.

Suzanne Ryan
Thank you so much for this post. Your #1 resonates with me right now. I am FMQ my Farm Girl Vintage and just learned how to use rulers. I am making each square unique and honestly some of those lines are not perfect. I have considered ripping them out but I am moving on. Who will notice when I wash it? ?? thanks for all the reminders though! I love seeing what you create. You are inspiring to me. So happy anniversary and here’s to many many more!!!
Margaret
Great advice and beautiful quilts, lovely family too.

Sue Hunt
Here's to the next ten years!
Dianne Whittle
I love seeing the two pics from then and now, the grown up kids, your sewing space. I love your advice but the one than resonates most with me is not looking for perfection. I always find fault with my work, I even hand over gifts to people telling them the bits I messed up. They just see a beautiful quilt made with love. That's what I should see too.
Melissa Ladd
I can't believe I just found your blog today! What an incredible journey you've had! Quilting is my number one stress-relieving hobby and I always try and get new recruits! Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see what you'll do next! 🙂

Michelle Size
Thank you so much for distilling 10 years worth of learning into 10 lessons we can all learn from. It is hard to let go of the ideal of perfection, but when snuggling under a quilt on a cold evening, no-one looks at the points.
Sheree A.
Congratulations on 10 years! I'm finding so many wonderful new teachers lately. Beautiful quilts . . . .lovely giveaways.

Diana webster
Hi, I’ve been sewing since 2008 and your blog was one of the first I found. It’s been fun to follow peoples creative journeys on line and even do a class with you at quiltcon 2016. It’s a great way to relax at the end of the week and get different parts of my brain working. And even when not sewing patting the pretty things is very therapeutic! Best wishes Diana
Mary English
What a wonderful journey! Congratulations and I’ll be following the next 10. Absolutely agree with #1. It’s so important to enjoy the ride and learn the skill. I have only been quilting 2years but I see the improvement in my first quilts compared to now, and I’ve learned to stretch my skills. Thank you for the videos and the blog.
Laurel Jensen
Congrats on 10 years and it was partly your blog that caught my eye when I began to quilt after retiring as an elementary teacher/librarian. Now my kin receive more quilts than they really need but I enjoy the process so much. Loved the pictures of then an now!
Teresa
Congratulations! I'm so glad to have found this blog!
Joan Wickersham
Love the things you have created. I worked when our children were growing, did bookkeeping for a construction company also. My main job was afternoon shift. I began my day by feeding breakfasts and ushering my bus riders. Then doing last night's dishes and prepping this evening's meal. I would leave for work before the bus came back but they had a good hot meal when my husband arrived home. I worked 30 years and during all that time I had patterns, kits, material that "some day" i could sew. Now am retired and recovering from surgery and would love one of your gifts. Your hints, ideas, color combinations make my dreams appear. Thanks
Ann Perry
I am especially enjoying the baby quilts and links to small items to make. Lovely fresh fabric lines.
Cindy Naglee

Jenny Stewart
Wow 10 years!! I also remember finding quilting blogs for the first time! Yours was one of the first I found and I loved reading it. Your Union Jack quilt has always been one of my favourites and is on my ‘to make’ list!

Chris Cole
Thanks for sharing your journey.
Melissa Beeston
Congratulations on 10 years blogging. I discovered your blogg about 5 years ago when i first started quilting. I laughed at your intro about feeling like a nana when you tell people you are a sewer because i felt a bit like that too at first. I have bought and used your patterns and when i sent you a photo of my finished churn dash and my union jack quilt on instagram you replied with so quickly and with sich enthusiasm i just felt so grateful to have found you through your blogg. I love your recreated photo with your kids too, for this post, a great idea and great perspective on time and growth of you and your kids. Love your work keep it going please!
Sue
Congratulations on your 10 years, I am so happy to see you agree with me that "finished is much better then perfect". Good luck with your next ten years and the teenagers.

Melissa H
Congrats on ten productive years! I always enjoy seeing what you have come up with and find your ideas fun. Thanks so much for sharing with all. What you said about choosing what is important and focusing on that really hit home - I’m in the midst of clearing out inherited UFOs! I find myself asking how much joy is this bringing me?
Kris Bartholomew
Love your ideas and inspiration!
csgamble
I'm pretty sure that you and CrazyMomQuilts were some of the first blogs I found when I started quilting about 10 years ago. I enjoy reading your blog and seeing what you're making. Your fabrics are beautiful!
Marlane
Good job and congratulations on 10 years!
Geri VanVliet
I love your down-to-earth attitude. Life isn’t ALL about quilting(not, did I really say that). We all have lives to live. But when I can’t be quilting, I’m thinking about it.
Sarah
I love the colors and prints in your fabrics. Your quilts are very inspirational. Thanks for sharing.
hadenmaiden
Thank you so much for this post - I'm very recently addicted to patchwork and quilting and there're so many wise words as well as useful links to follow! I'm going to have to spend some time investigating earlier posts!
Joy P

Blondie Spence
i do remember when I first saw your blog; perhaps about 2008. I enjoyed your fresh approach and family. I blogged back then as well - not strictly quilting. Life goes on, priorities change but quilting has always been a constant comfort in my life. Wishing you only the very best that God has for you and yours. Thank you for the sunshine you bring to so many new and veteran quilters alike.
Alexandra Bouvrette
Love reading your blog and reading inspired by your spot on color choices
Karen
Congratulations on 10 years of a great blog. Time sure does fly when you are having fun.
Susan Scott
I have decided that done is better than perfect. I still try to do my best but I realized one day that not many people probably stop and look for perfection, they look at the big picture. Thanks for your encouragement.
Katie Lwne
Wow, Amy... These words came at the perfect time... A God thing. I discovered your blog and new fabric lines in 2017 around the same time I fell in love with quilting. Still learning to navigate the online community and praying about how God would see fit to use my hobby for his glory (business or not? How to manage the ever-growing stash? Balancing time with family? Etc). Congratulations on ten years! I'm sure it's been quite a ride! Now, I'm looking for pointers as to how to get started... Any references you could provide related to blogging and such?
Amy
Good for you! I'd recommend Abby Glassenberg's book about getting started growing an online business as a great place to start. https://whileshenaps.com/shop/the-creative-blogging-cookbook-what-you-need-to-know-to-grow-your-business-through-blogging-ebook
Jenifer Farrell
Congratulations on your milestone! I've followed your blog for a number of years, though not quite ten. I wish you many more years of success ahead!
Jessica
Do you think it’s necessary to blog to get into the quilting world? I’ve recently started an Instagram but I haven’t ventured to blogging yet. I’ve been quilting for 6 years but still feel like I’m at the beginning of my quilting journey and have so much to learn. I love your blog and Instagram! Here’s to many more years quilting!!
Amy
I do think that blogging is really helpful because there's so much more you can do with a blog than with Instagram. Abby Glassenberg has a helpful Ebook about growing your creative business through a blog. I wish I'd had it 10 years ago! https://whileshenaps.com/shop/the-creative-blogging-cookbook-what-you-need-to-know-to-grow-your-business-through-blogging-ebook

LAMadill
Thoughtful advice, especially about perfectionism. Thank you!!
Shirley Allen Alexander
Happy anniversary 10 years wow!
Becca
Your blog was one of the first ones I found, thanks to a pattern I bought from American Quilting during a moonlight madness sale! You had a booth set up with some quilts, and it was a Christmas disappearing nine patch. I made up a quilt kit for my mom and got her converted to quilting with it. Yay!
Amy
I love it!!
Beth Strand
I love your thoughts and will definitely check that book out! Thanks! Beth @ Words & Stitches

I read your blog regularly and feel like we truly are friends because of it. Like you, I don't really have many friends that like to sew or quilt so blogs spur on my creativity and keep me going. Congratulations on ten years and please keep on going.

Okay first off Happy Blogiversary!! Did you ever think 10 years ago you'd be so blessed?! I was perusing Google and it had a blip about your post so I thought to myself "I'll check out this blog". I'm just starting to teach myself to quilt. We'll see how it goes. What I loved in reading your post was clicking on previous posts woven throughout and how you testify to the Lord's blessings in your life - not without some bumps in the road and life's trials. I was blessed so much reading your post. I plan on browsing through your blog and seeing what I've been missing. Thank you for your story and I wish you continued success.
Mary
Thank you for sharing your creative quilting ideas and your own life lessons.
Lindsay C
Enjoyed reading your reflections. Happy blogiversary!
Kathy
Happy Anniversary, Amy!! I have to tell you I discovered you a few years back when I was job searching and took a quick "computer break" Your blogs have brightened my days! You are SO right about putting down the phone! And perfectionism is highly over rated!! I enjoy and have learned a lot from your blog
Please keep up the great work that you do.
Kathy
Nancy McEldowney
Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
Talina
Your list is great, thank you for the reminders!
Happy 10 Year Blogiversary!
Laurie Matthews
This is a great post! I love your advice and would love it if more people would dive into quilting and sewing- but I do think perfectionism gets in the way. I love seeing how big your kids have grown too- I feel like I am in the thick of it- my oldest is 9 and I am pregnant with my 4th.... I hope you keep blogging- it's disappointing that so many people have stopped blogging and rely solely on IG.
Jeanne L Hoerr
Congratulations on 10 years! Pretty awesome work that you do and share with us:) Thanks and hoping for 10 more!
Judy Fox Gibbons
I enjoyed reading your blog, but more importantly I love your fabric. I have so much Gingham Girls, but I don’t want to cut it! I am also a proud owner of two Babylocks. I look forward to seeing more from you in the future. Thanks!
Amy
haha! Oh thank you. I say cut it! 🙂
Megan Burke
Congratulations on 10 years! I just started quilting and love reading your posts. My daughter received a quilt through Project Linus when she was in the ICU before she died. It was nice having some color in an otherwise sterile room and so meaningful that someone made the blanket for her. I wanted to learn quilting to give back and pay it forward.
Amy
Oh wow. That's hard to imagine. What a sweet memory of what must have been such a difficult time. Your offering to pay it forward will come with an added love and perspective. xo
Colleen Ferber
Congrats! We are all better quilters thanks to you and 10 years of tips, inspiration, awesome patterns and fabrics! Can’t wait for more!
Marcia B
Congratulations on your 10th anniversary! Thanks for sharing your wisdom via the ten lessons you acquired through these ten years! I chuckled at your updated photo of your children- my how they have grown! 🙂 Keep doing what your doing because I so enjoy reading your blog!

Happy Blogiversary! I am a newbie quilter with one finished quilt top in the books. Following blogs (and YouTube) has been so helpful, with yours being one of my favorite sites. Thank you!
Janel Kerr
I have recently come back to sewing and I have been amazed at the calming effect that fabric and the hum of my machine have on me. After a long, stressful day, playing with color and pattern help lift that weight. Your blog has really helped me to approach my sewing in a new way. Thank you!!!
Linda Douglas
Amy, Congratulations ?! Thanks so much for your inspiration in our Quilting+Sewing! Thanks to for a Great Giveaway!

First congratulations on 10 years! I also want to say thank you for sharing part of your life for the last 10 years. I’m still what I would consider new to quilting (less than a year) and had wanted to learn for many years but was always to overwhelmed of where to start. If it was not for you and other quilt bloggers and other quilters posting their stories and knowledge I would never have given quilting a try. And after starting to quilt I now know what I would have been missing out on. So thank you so much for passing on you knowledge to those of us who had no idea of how or even where to start. Thank you and Happy Anniversary!
Bunny Wilson
Congratulations on 10 years and many thanks for all the times I've turned to your tutorials that have helped me along my quilting journey!

So glad I found your blog (and not just because of the give away)! I recently moved from Chicago to beautiful southwestern North Carolina. We love it here because we are surrounded by mountains and have a fabulous view of the mountains from our back porch. As happy as I am to be here, I miss my family, friends and my favorite quilt stores up north. I’m turning 62 this July and retirement is not far away! Looking forward to being able to spend more free time quilting! I have a life time of fabric to use! Right now I’m still painting and trying to get settled in. Housework is just not my thing especially when all that fabric keeps begging me to make something with it! Slowly finding quilt shops here, unfortunately most of them are far from me as we are out in the country. I need to follow your advise and join a guild and make new quilting friends! Thanks for the inspiration and congrats on 10 years!
LAURA j RIEBEN
Congratulations! I have enjoyed watching your journey!

Hi, Amy!
I have followed your blog for a short time, now. The very first quilt I made from your patterns was the pixelated heart quilt. I used leftover Kaffe Fassetts 2.5-inch squares from another quilt project. It turned out great. Thank you for sharing all of your creativity for the past 10 years.

Your article celebrating 10 yrs milestone with the wisdom you imparted was very unique. once in a while its nice to be reminded to feel, touch the ground we stand on, reminded that we are only human and its ok as long as we enjoy the journey. our needle and thread has been our therapist for a while and so i have made it compulsory for me to touch base with myself everyday through needle and thread + me = HAPPY(ME TIME)

I have been following you for about 5 years, I think, and love your patterns and fabric. Congrats on such a great anniversary! I retired 10 years ago last February and I am also amazed at the changes in my life since then. Perfectionism has always been a bug-a-boo with my sewing since I learned to sew in my teens, and I hope to do better so I can get more quilting done. May you have at the very least, another happy 10 years!

I love your words of wisdom and agree with them 100%. When I first started quilting to get through a Dakota winter, it kept me sane as I was a new mom in a new land with very few friends and far from family. Quilting got me through some tough times. Congratulations on 10 years!
Susan S Olsson
Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary. Like you, Crazy Mom Quilts was one of the first quilting blogs (or blog, generally) that I read. I have enjoyed trying different things from your blog and was so pleased when you replied to a question I had about one of your patterns. Last year, sewing for others, really opened an internal dialog for me about how I can connect my craft/hobbies to help others - even if it's just brightening their day. Cheers to 10 more years!
nicole

I've read your blog off and on for the past few years (life, you know, getting in the way) but just realized that your first grey quilt (low volume one) was the inspiration for my son and daughter in law's wedding quilt. So, I've already won!
Sue

Congratulations on 10 years, Amy! I still remember your encouragement with my first few quilts, while following one of your sew alongs. I didn't know the first thing on how to share my picture of them on your blog - you didn't know me at all - yet you quickly stepped in to lend a helping hand - and one of my quilts won a prize. That is when I felt 'included' into this new world of quilting friends. This feeling of belonging was just so wonderful to someone who always felt "Jack of all trades, Master at none" - all of a sudden it was OK to just be who I was. Thank you so very much!! Wishing you all the best and continued success with your fabric and pattern designing. Loved reading your 10 'things' - great post - and so enjoyed all the pictures - a family affair :)!
Deb S
Congratulations on 10 years of glorious blogging and wishing you many more! Love your list of tips posted today - having recently retired it checked so many boxes. Sewing is the answer for me. Thank you again.
MARY
Thank you for sharing the ten things you have learned. I needed to hear about not stressing over seams that don't quite match and spending too much time on my computer. I must stop comparing my quilts to the ones I see that others make and just enjoy my quilting journey.
karenva
Congratulations on 10 years! That is an amazing accomplishment. I completely agree that perfection is overrated.
Ann R
Amy,
As a newer quilter, I want to say thanks for sharing your talents and teaching through your blog. I continue to learn so much- so thank you and congratulations on this 10 year anniversary!

As I read your post I kept thinking, it hasn’t been ten years, has it? I started quilting when we were waiting on a kidney transplant for my husband. It kept me close to the phone. I am self taught and followed you from the start. Congratulations on this milestone!
ladybugred01
Congratulations on the 10 years of your quilt blog! After sewing for more than 50 years, I am still am encouraged by your blog in my quilting and learn new tips from you on how to improve. I agree that giving up on perfectionism makes sewing so much more fun.
Teri
Congratulations on 10 incredible years! I think your blog was one of the first I discovered and I have found lots of great advice and quily things. Thank you for being here and all your sharing.
Denise Shaffer
I temporarily left quilting about 15 years ago. Now that my youngest is inschool, I have rediscovered it. In doing so I found your blog a few moths ago. Congrats on the anniversary! Here's to many more years sharing your craft.
carmensrowe2hoe
I appreciate your blog post today, as my first quilt class instructor was a perfectionist, and critiqued the class as one. I was so intimidated that I was sure I would continue my quilt making quest. When I learned the instructor was going to do another class, I thought I might give it another go.....she said she didn't think I was experienced enough for the class. I went home defeated. However, I finally decided to give it a go on my own. I've completed about 40 plus quilts now and I do a fine job of it. My quilter loves me bringing my tops to her, she says my quilts are some of the best that come into her shop. So, I learned that perfection or experience comes with doing a few quilts and a love of working with fabric. I love what I do, and so blessed that I didn't cave to rejection.
Amy
Good for you!!! I love that you just kept going! Because I totally agree- the more you do it the more confident you become. This is awesome.

Words of Wisdom. Things to think on todos week. Your quilts and photos are amazing.
Kathy R.
Happy 10 years and many more! Thank you for you words of wisdom. I can connect with so many of them, I'm learning the one "you can't do it all" when applied to sewing for yourself and sewing for others. Sewing quilts was feeling like a chore, so I cut back and am doing the ones that will make me smile as they are put together.
Paula Seagraves
You are a wise woman. I'm only beginning my quilting voyage and wish I had started much earlier. But sailing on, I am! Thank you for sharing those wonderful thoughts.
Mary Ellen Perry
Your blog article is spot on! I could so relate to all you shared. Quilting has been my mental health saver more than once. Happy Tenth Anniversary!!! (and may you have many more). Whatever you want to send if you choose me is fine, love it all (except, I'm a 3x lady and those t-shirts look small LOL).
Ann R

Congrats!! I have been following for many years, the time really flies. Wonderful post today. Thanks for all the inspiration along the way.
Beth S.
Congratulations on achieving 10 years. I look forward to the next 10.
You have inspired me on my quilt journey. I've learned that by breaking down the sewing into blocks of 30 minutes I can accomplish alot more than if I wait until I have a larger block free time.
chris martone
After reading this email, I have bookmarked and read thru so many tutorials. Wonderful information that I will be using for years to come!
happyquiltingmelissa
I treasure our friendship!!! Thank you for your example, inspiration, encouragement, and kindness!!! I can't wait to see what the next 10 years bring 🙂

CONGRATULATIONS AMY
Your blog was one of the very first I found back in...... 2010 when I decided to say goodbye to figure skating and get back to sewing. I love your great advice, It is good on so many levels in life.
I have learned to never slave away on something you start and do not love. Fold it up and bring it to the nearest sewing school (mine is Sew Magarbo in Sterling Virginia) and let those learners have at it. Someone might find the spark I did not see, and I love sharing with my sewing teacher friend.
I am never on instagram (razzleberryrose) and rarely on FB. I just read blogs when I can.
Best wishes to your older daughter, your kids are lovely and you are too!!
Sue Payne
Congratulations on 10 years of blogging. And thank you for doing it. I enjoy your posts.

Calli Moore
Yay! Happy 10th year of blogging! I especially loved your tip #5- get off your phone! I recently read The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative by Florence Williams and have been trying to get more outside time. It really helps me, too! It's a great read and I think you'd enjoy it 🙂
Amy
That does sound like a great read! Thanks for the recommendation!

Congratulations on 10 years. You've been an inspiration in my life for many years. Such lovely quilts, and amazing backdrops. I love your neck of the woods. May you have many more years on this journey.
dfrantz1953
Congratulations and thanks so much Amy! You were the first quilt blog I subscribed to. I started blogging … mostly about quilting … about 6 years ago. You have given your readers so much inspiration and encouragement over the years. It is your nature. It has been a rough year for our family. My severely handicapped 34 year old daughter died 5 months ago and I still cry a little every day. Then last month my husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Can life get any more challenging? While I wait for the "joy" to return … I quilt … and it helps.
Amy
Oh my goodness. What a difficult load for you right now. I'm so sorry about your daughter - I know only a little bit about the load of caring for a special needs child from watching my grandmother and mother-in-law and the complexities of emotions that brings. I'm so glad that quilting helps some. Sending so much love and support your way. xo
Sue Holman
Thank you, Amy, for 10 years of interesting and inspiring posts and great giveaways.
I enjoy every one of your posts!
Kim
Thank you!. In my beginning quilting days your blog was one of my quilting bibles. I especially love your gift for quilters lists and tutorials.
Denise Powell
Thank you for starting your blog 10 years ago! I made your quilt with the sawtooth star and it helped my confidence in quilting! Thank you for your comment about perfection. I needed to hear that.
Janet Taber
Amy, I have to comment on your post, prize possibilities or not. I just love your ten things learned! You've become my favorite quilt blogger (and I read a bunch of them, when I have time!) because of your common sense-based, grounded-in-faith, charmingly-presented and doable quilting advice. And once when I emailed you, you answered. That was memorable and special to me. You are a REAL PERSON, and the rest of us real people need to see that . Thank you for sharing your lovely talents with us and for inspiring us to just try. I love your fabric lines, and I love your patterns and lessons, but mostly I love your honesty and commitment to what you believe. Bless you as you continue to be a sweet and sincere guiding light. Looking forward to the next decade of your Diary. 🙂
Nancy Centrella

Jan Parker
I have enjoyed your blog for several years now. When I see that I have an email from you, I always brighten up and click! You always have some new information that I can absorb and I really like that you share other people's links so that we can learn from other quilters also. This is very important. We need this network of people to expand our talents and interests. So thanx again for this blog!
Tammi Hild
Thank you for the list of 10 things you have learned. I keep telling myself not to stop when I get frustrated about wonky points and seams that don't quite match. Your blog has been a real encouragement and source of inspiration since I first began quilting more seriously when I recently retired from teaching. Your down to earth writing and bright fabrics, patterns and final products make me smile. Thanks.
Jodie
congrats on 10 years Amy! I love your blog and look forward to reading it every week. I can’t wait to see what you have coming in the future.
Melissa Reynolds
Congratulations on your quilting/blogging anniversary! I’ve come to appreciate the “sisterhood” I’ve found in quilting blogs with like-minded folks so much since I retired. I miss my coworkers and my best friend and quilting buddy so much! The inspiration and fun I find in reading the blogs is so special! Good luck and best wishes for the next 10 years!!
Melissa Murray
Thank you for 10 years of inspiration! I have enjoyed your blog since I first started quilting. ❤️
Kathleen Morse
Amy, Congratulations on 10 years! Your have been doing only what I can dream about. I have started my longarm quilt studio this year but I still work full time as an informatics nurse at a local hospital and that takes so much of my time and energy. I have just over 4 years to retire and than I can concentrate on quilting more and I just can't wait. You give me hope that it can be done. I love all your quilts and fabrics. Love the brightness of it all. Keep up the great work! Thanks from Upstate NY!
Virginia Marien
Thank you so much for all your inspiration. I've been following your blog for a few years and really enjoy it. I could not agree more that quilting is therepy, it's gotten me through my husbands stroke and suffering for 7 years.
Mary Baro
Many, many thanks for your inspiring words and helpfulness. Thanks to your blog my family has a blossoming tradition - each new baby is welcomed with a personalized Lattice baby quilt. We can't wait to see the babies and their quilts through the years, hopefully in a photo together!
Amy
That is the greatest!!
JoEllyn West
Thank you for sharing your love of quilting with us. I am only 9 years new into this and it has become a passion. I have always loved fabric and I am like a little child going into a candy store when I go to quilt and fabric shops,
and get very excited with all of the stimulation of color and smell, etc. Don't think I'm alone here! Congratulations on your ten years of blogging!
Robin
Many congratulations to you, Amy! Your success has been well deserved. Your blog was one of the first I found when I began my quilting journey. You continue to inspire me to be a better quilter and a better person. Thank you for your authenticity, sound advice, and positive attitude.

Amy Carmona
I don’t remember how I found your blog, but EVERY time I see an email from Diary of a Quilter, I stop whatever I’m doing to read your posts. I’ve found great ideas, great advice, and inspiration as well. Also discovered great online shops to go for great fabrics to go with those tutorials!

Mary Freeman
Congrats on 10 years. It takes a lot to keep up a blog! for so long Loved your 10 tips- the first being one of my favorite. People can get so stuck on perfection that they never finish anything. The joy of a finished quilt is amazing! And giving it to someone is even more special. You have a beautiful family!
Mary Cardon
Amy, congrats on 10 years of doing something you love!? Unlike you I started quilting later in life, but also love it. I have yet to find quilting friends to go on retreat with but maybe one day when I retire. Thank you for all the great prizes. Here's to 10 more years!

Congratulations on your ten year milestone. Your blog is one of my favorites - I wish I had discovered quilt blogs before I retired and at the start of my quilting journey as they would have saved me a lot of bloopers!
Margie
I loved what you posted about finding friends through blogging. I am a SAH Mom with 4 small kids, and feel isolated, with few friends that live close, and none that sew. I can really relate! I am brand new to the blogging world, and am enjoying it. Thanks for your posts!
ANN D

Amy< It is so thoughtful of you to share your experiences of 10 years. Your comments are all very worthwhile. We are only human and humans are not perfect and it would be sad if we thought so. Congrats on your 10th anniversary! And much more!
Cindy Stock
Thank you for your words of inspiration and for sharing your love of quilting!
Cindy M
Congratulations! Your words (and quilts!) are truly an inspiration to me:) Years back my Son and I began the "quilting journey" together, making Snuggle mats to donate to local shelters and rescues. He passed away shortly after we began but I have finally been able to continue in his honor/memory, my way of keeping his legacy alive. Your "life lessons" truly do ring true for me in so many ways. Life is short, filled with both ups and downs, it can be kind as well as harsh. Find what you love, what gives you peace of mind and heart and hold tight to the blessings that come your way:)
thread50
Wow. 10 years!! How time flies when we look back upon the accomplishments but seems so long when we are in the midst of it. Thank you for your post today, all of your suggestions are very helpful and put things in perspective. Also thanks for all of the giveaways and your years of work and posts to help all of us.

I am looking forward to my soon retirement so I can practice some of the things I have learned following your, and other talented quilters, blogs. Thank you Amy.

To move forward you have to look back. It's inspiring to see how far you have come and to think about how far I have come in the same time period. Love your patterns and your fabric!
Kelly Pauling
Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary! As a recovering perfectionist I appreciate your reminders to let go and the easy precut patterns that gave me practice early on. Thanks for passing along your love of quilting.
Maxine Reisenleiter
Congratulations on this milestone. I hope we'll be hearing from you for another ten years. Thanks to you and your generous sponsors for the giveaways.
Debbie
I stumbled on your site this past year and have picked up some good tips, so thank you! I love your #1 comment Perfection is Overrated as I am a beginner quilter so perfection is not in my vocabulary right now! I am only doing small table top pieces and there are always some mistakes but usually I am the only one who sees them 🙂 Congratulations on 10 years and keep up with the ideas, patterns and tips!
Bettina Kesteloot
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity, and congratulation on over ten years of doing something that you love. I'm still working on the learning to say no part, even after all of these years.
Doreen Bulleman

I loved the 10 things you have learned in 10 years, they hit the spot for me, too. I'm going to share this with my quilting friend. She hasn't been quilting as long as me BUT puts so much pressure on herself and then gives up....Thank you again for the advice.....
Christina MacLaren
Congrats on 10 years of blogging! I spent several years maintaining a paper crafting blog, and I know how much work it can be. Your tips are so appreciated too, as I’ve had much less time for quilting recently and have to remind myself that I can’t do it all, and I should never compare my journey to someone else’s. Thank you for all the inspiration you provide here!
Adrienne Amdahl
Congratulations on your 10 years of sharing, inspiring and teaching. And thank you to all your partners sponsoring your give away!
Dianne Bishop
You have inspired many in the last 10 years. The sky's the limit for the next 10. I like how you said (in my words) to enjoy other people's path even if it not yours. I can identify with this as my interests have changed recently and what I enjoyed before has been replaced by new adventures in quilting.
Sally
Wonderful to have found you! Enjoy the journey going forward.
Tammy
Congratulations on your Blogaversary! I just realized that I found your blog not long after you started blogging. I love to see what you’re working on.

Christine Williamson

Wow 10 blogging years!! Congratulations!! I've been a fan/follower for many years now and have enjoyed watching your quilting career grow! I've learned so many skills from you, even though I have been quilting much longer than you. (I hate to admit that as, I have the UFO's to prove it!) I've always enjoyed too the sharing of your children's antics, as I am a mother of grown children and now grandchildren! Thanks too for the giveaway!
Mary B
Thank you for sharing your story! You wrote it & I read it at just the right time in my life. I'll be re-reading this several times. Thanks again!!

Wow, 10 years of great quilt making and sharing of tips and ideas. Yes, I made 2 bedside table runners for my son's 10th wedding anniversary once adapting your diagonal squares baby quilt (to compliment the king quilt I'd made them!). Thanks for your great little shortcuts and musings. Conratulations!

Thanks for all your beautiful inspiration. I especially loved your commentary on perfection - I try to internalize that in all aspects of my life, and when my points don’t line up I remind myself that it doesn’t matter in the end. Thank you!

Hey, Amy! Congrats on 10 years -- that is a bunch of blogging and quilting!
Your perfection tip spoke to me. After many years, I have adopted the motto, "Not perfect, but finished." Not to say that I don't occasionally have to use a seam ripper or that I don't try a couple of times to match seams, but I don't stress over imperfection. I wonder how many projects would be finished now if I had bought into that concept years ago ?!? Thanks for the generous sharing of your talent and wisdom. Here's to 10 more!
Beth Buning
Congratulations on 10 years! Really enjoy your patterns and your blog. Thank you for the generous chance to win! Here's to 10 more great years!

So fun to read your post Amy and hear what you have learned in the past 10 years. I am sooooo guilty of perfectionism and yours post is a good reminder to LET IT GO! Margy McCroskey
Congratulations on 10 years! I love your blog and all the inspiration.
Marion Rudasill
My very favorite part of this blog post are the "Then and Now" pictures of your kids. They really are good sports and you should be proud! All your tips are great. I love the one about Abundance and it shows with how interconnected you seem to be with so many other quilting bloggers and designers. Very cool.
Sharon
Based on the incredible number of comments you’ve received so far, you must be doing something right! Your generosity is inspiring, and the advice on perfectionism really hit home with me as a fairly new quilter. I made a Save the Bees quilt as my first Sew Along and thought I would donate it to our local Master Gardener group for their fundraiser. When I showed a picture of it to a fellow gardener who was apparently a very experienced quilter, all she said was “Oh”. I was crushed! I almost decided not to donate it, but my family wouldn’t let me cave in, and guess what? The quilt was raffled off for 320 dollars!
Jessica
Congratulations on 10 years! You were one of the first quilters I started to follow years ago and I still love following you today! Cheers to many more years ❤️

In our senior community they have become my best friends.

Just recently started quilting. I did your BOM last year & I’m doing this year’s BOM as well. Your instructions are so easy to follow & great for beginners.
My sewing room has been my “happy place” & “therapy room” quite a bit the last 6 months. My husband has congestive heart failure & has been in and out of the hospital multiple times in 6 months.
Using your quilt pattern gets my mind on other things for a couple of hours each day. Thank you for your inspiration

I live in South Australia and I was so happy to find your blog. What I like about it: it's really clear for beginners, but is also great for experienced quilters; it has all different kinds of quilting featured (even hand sewn, like English paper piecing); it has excellent links to so many other useful resources - you are very generous in your acknowledgement of others' expertise; and although I feel isolated from a lot of the shops and events you mention, you make me feel like I'm just down the road and could get advice from you easily. I don't know if that would work really, as I've never posted to you before, but I feel like it could be. Congratulations on a great job. I have looked at subscribing to other people's quilting blogs, but honestly with yours I don't feel like I need to. Yours is so wide ranging in what it covers, and one must leave time for the actual sewing of course!

Congrats on the past ten years. I love your patterns and your fabric. I am on a mission to make a quilt for each of my children and each of my grandchildren within the next year. Loved the older post about your Hmong neighbor and her sewing. We have many Hmong living in the area and their sewing expertise (and patience) is fantastic.
Gail
Amy, your blog is a breath of fresh air & I so enjoy reading it! Congratulations on blogging for 10 years along with creating patterns, fabrics & raising a happy, healthy family...you do it all so well!
cdahlgren2013
I've been following you for a lot of those ten years, off and on, as my health permited. I quilt as much as I can, ir helps me deal with the things I've been challenged with. When I'm unable to quilt, I read blogs, and take classes on the internet. I go to my local guild and get a lot of support there. Without blogs, and quilting, I don't think I would have made it through the past 12 years, and yours was one of the first I read. Thanks for hanging around. jadahlgr at yahoo dot com.
Vicki Williams
Well, silly me couldn’t find the world bubble to click on, sojust scrolled to the bottom of the comments. LOL. An incredible journey and generous giveaway. How generous of you to share your story with all of us! Congratulations on your journey to this happy milestone. I too have four children. When they were small, I sewed all sorts of things for them, but now that I am retired, I don't get nearly as much done with twice the time to do it! How does that work? Thanks for your day-brighteners, Amy.
Anne-Marie Webster

I found your blog a couple of years ago and it became one of my go to reads for quilting. We have a lot in common, such as being girls from the 70's. I would have become your quilty friend sooner, but non-techie that I am, I couldn't figure out how to post on your site until a few weeks ago. Silly me. 🙂 It's nice to know that I do most of the '10 things' you have learned over the years! Thanks for the inspriration!!

Congratulations on 10 years of sharing the ups and downs of life and quilting.! I absolutely loved your 10 Things. It was great, and so thought provoking for me. I am going to tell my daughters about this too. I think they can learn a lot from you. If you think the last 10 years went past hang on. I've been married for 49 years OMG where did the time go. Life definitely has ups and downs and bumps along the way. I too have found a peace in piecing. It is my calming place in life. Please take care of yourself and your wonderful family. I hope I will be reading on with you for a long time.
Carol Johnston

My Aimee is turning 40 soon and is in Italy with her husband celebrating 5 years of marriage 3/20/19. I love your blog, I love your fabric, I love your patterns, I love everything to do with quilting. My Aimee is the only one of my 3 daughters who quilts. However, my 10 year old granddaughter (oldest daughter/child of my youngest daughter, Katie) really enjoys all kinds of sewing and crafts. She will inherit my stash!
Congratulations on 10 years! It flies by doesn't it. It doesn't stop either. I mean my daughter is going to be 40!!!

Congrats on your 10th anniversary!! Celebrating 5 mths late seem so much like something’s we would do 🙂 The time has to feel right when you celebrate something special. I started looking into quilting less than a year ago, something I’ve always wanted to do....only took over 30years! I love it! I was lucky enough to find your site early and I have learned a great deal... so thank you. I feel if you have good teachers learning a task is so much easier. I loved this post and always enjoy your blog! I love the work you do and appreciate you sharing what you do. Thanks for helping me get started on a life long dream of learning to quilt. Congrats again!!
Mary Beth

Susan K
Congrats on 10 years! So much can change in that time and yet it feels so short! I have been quilting for many years but about 10 years ago I walked into a modern quilt shop and offered to teach classes. The best thing and one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It changed my life in so many ways. I met more people who love fabric and quilts like I do. It introduced me to blogs! And modern quilts. And fabric lines. May you have many more years of playing with fabrics and blogging!
Martha C

10 years is about how long I have been quilting! Congrats on 10 years!

Congratulations on reaching 10 years. I discovered you just over two years ago. My daughter was pregnant and I wanted to make a baby quilt. I used your tutorial for the Texas star quilt and made it in pinks and grays for a precious baby girl. Since then I’ve tackled some table runners and a few pillows. Now Baby Two is on the way and I’m excited about starting a new quilt soon. Thank you so much for providing resources and tutorials for newbies like me!
Karen

Betsy Pompi
Congratulations on a Decade of posting. Soon it will be 2 decades! I love your lessons in letting go of perfection. The Amish will tell you that only God is perfect, so your quilt Has to have at least one mistake in it. I also liked your comment about letting go and focusing only on what you can control right now. That hits home for me at this particular time. Thanks for that reminder.
I enjoy your blog. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Ellen Kremer
Loved the pictures of your kids, very cute. Thanks for being an inspiration to me and many others. Hope you have at least another ten years!!!
Corky King

I never comment but I been reading your blog since I bought my first sewing machine during the last Amazon Prime day. You break down the art of quilting into easy to understand chucks. My fourth quilt was your Fast Four Patch Quilt and I am planning on making the Craftsman using Tula Pink Pinkerton.
Thanks for creating this blog and I hope you enjoy it for another ten years and beyond!
Susie
Congratulations on ten years. I love your blog!
Heather
Wow! 10 years! Thanks for the insights. It was a fun read.
Beth Talmage
Happy Blogiversary! Your blog has brought me a lot of happiness and I hope that happiness comes right back to you and your family. Thanks for reminding me about Essentialism. I put it on my TBR list when you first mentioned it, but it has been languishing there. Some of the things you said--especially about remembering that what makes you happy might not be what makes everyone else happy but you must honor your own likes and preferences--reminded me of Gretchen Rubin and her books focusing on happiness, beginning with The Happiness Project. If you haven't read anything by her I think she might be a good one to put on *your* TBR list. 🙂
Amy
That IS on my list! Thanks for the reminder - I think I need to read it now! (or I should say, "Listen to it" since that is how I consume most books these days. Because Hey! I can sew and listen at the same time! 🙂 )
Susie McEwen
So enjoy your blog. Keep up the good work!
Elisabeth Isis Pluut
Congratulations on your 10 years plus of blogging. Enjoy your blog and all the colourful inspiration. To many more years of blogging and creativity.

Your statement about when you just started out you felt alone, had small children at home, and you were way younger than all the quilters you met--well that is me for sure! So glad I found your blog.

And that "Now" picture of your kids is just as adorable as the first one. They're obviously having fun with it, even if they'd never admit that in a million years. Here's to continued joy and success in both your life and your work.

I love this post and your amazing wisdom! I couldn't agree more with everything you said. And it's so funny how many people started blogging around this time - it is my 10 year anniversary in June! I don't think I can provide quite such a gigantic giveaway though - wowee that's a lot of stuf!!
Meli Mathis
Back in 2012, 7 years ago, after a bad break up, I had gotten back to sewing a lot more. I started reading blogs, and yours was one of them. I won a Madrona Road bundle from you - well before there were over a thousand entries on one of your posts. Just yesterday, I was at Yardage Town in San Diego, and there was a bolt of the blue and yellow herringbone from Madrona Road and it made me think to that first FQ bundle I ever cut up into pieces to put back together again. I didn't even know who Violet Craft was when she left a comment on my instagram! I say all that since I've evolved, too. In the last few months I got a long arm and have already taken commissions from other members of my IN PERSON guild. I'm active duty in the Navy, and some of the dearest friends I've left behind with each move have been the members of my local modern quilt guilds. I want to thank you for all the posts you written over the years, and someday I hope I get to meet you in person the way you got to meet Amanda Jean.
Amy
Wow! I love it! I hope we get to meet too!

Congrats on 10 years! Some very wise words in this post. I'm a perfectionist and tend to get hung up on every little thing I didn't get just right. Your post helped me realize I'm learning as I go, and it doesn't have to be perfect for me to enjoy the journey.
Nancy Andrews

Congratulations on 10 years! I love your blog and your quilts. (I did make the forest quilt with Christmas fabric and gifted it to my sister). After a lifetime of sewing I found quilting after my Mom passed away very suddenly. I was left in a grief-filled state and turned to my fabric and the sewing that she and my grandmother taught me. That was 3-1/2 years ago. Quilting brought me joy again. I obsess over my mistakes although my first quilt teacher of substance told us that every quilt needs a mistake to make it perfect in its own way. And so I continue to remember her words when something just doesn't work out. Thanks for your words. Love the photos of your kids btw.

Thank you for showing us your "studio" that appears to be a corner of your kitchen or dining room with your kids all around you. I think we don't create as much because we believe we need a studio (thank you Pinterest) How much more impressive are we who do it in spite of not having a room of our own. Thanks for showing us the way.

Amy, I'm not even sure now how I happened upon your blog years ago, but I've been following you for about 7 years. When you posted a quilt you had made for your mother-in-law years ago I decided I needed to break out of my boring red, green, blue, brown fabrics and make a "happy color" quilt. I copied your color choices and made the same blocks you had made and made myself a fun quilt. Imagine my surprise when later I became acquainted with your in-laws when they lived in Cedar Hills and I walked into their home to see your quilt on their banister. I had to confess that I had a similar one on my own banister. We grew to love your in-laws and still stay in touch. Congratulations on 10 years! Quite an accomplishment. By the way - I can't get enough of your new Gretel line! I love it!

Amy, I can only echo the warm sentiments of the other 1,000+ commenters here. You were my "bible" when I graduated from sewing to quilting just a few years ago, and I don't just have your blog bookmarked, it's on my toolbar!! I admire you in so many ways: your artistry, your beatiful workmanship, your enthusiasm and obvious love for quilting, and your good cheer and humor. Even though I've never met you, I adore you and consider you one of my dear online quilting friends. Congratulations and Thank You!!

I agree with so much with the things you wrote about this post. Sometimes I see people who have just started quilting and fuss so much about a tiny point, which gives them stress and to me that is such a waste since the project looks so good. I try to do most of the 10 things you talk about in your post, some sometimes with more ease that others so it al sounded so familiar and recognisable.

Really enjoy your blog, here is to the next ten!
