Pardon the hasty, not great picture. I’m working on a Soul Blossom quilt for the shop where I work. (That fabric isn’t moving – I’m not sure why. Well, I kind of am. It’s cool decorator fabric, or even apparel, but trickier for a quilt.)
Anyway, I’m trying to do something with it and I’m not sure if it’s a hot mama or a hot mess. Up close it’s hard to tell.
Opinions welcome. (Keep in mind the white sashing will be wider and more uniform – my wall is too small to really spread it out. That should help.)
It’s snowing here. Boo.
Mary
I really like the fabric with the white sashing…not so sure about the shade of blue for the intersections, though. It seems a little off.<br /><br />Mary<br />https://www.quiltgenius.com

I like it.
Leigh
I really like it! When I first saw the pic my only thought was wider sashing, but then I saw that you've already planned that! I might agree with the previous comment about the intersections– maybe a solid instead?
Candace McClintick
OH! I love it!!
Nicole
I like the colors. I agree that wider sashing would work better – gives more space for the eyes to rest. Also, instead of the blue print squares, perhaps a solid color?
stephmabry
I agree with previous commenters about the little blue squares – something solid would help calm the loud patterns of the big squares a little bit, I think. The shade of blue doesn't seem right, either. I like the idea of blue there, though, since the main fabrics have lots of warm colors in them.
Debbie
Not really a fan of her fabrics…they just don't do it for me other than the moon dots or whatever they are called…I think whatever you do with it will be perfect tho.
Andria
I was just going to cut up my soul blossoms today. It is a hard collection to work with- so busy. It definitely needs white to break it up. I kind of liked your blue intersections but maybe if you used the pink dots instead they would go better?
The Riebeek Family
I think it's Hot Hot! Love the fabric designs and colors!
Steph
Hot Mama. For sure.
Debra
I think i'ts fab but I'm a fan too!
Sew.What.
I love it too. I agree with everyone else though, a solid for the intersections, the blue dots are just one too many patterns. I think they take away from the sour blossom prints, which are beautiful.
Linboose
Love the fabric too but I too agree with some others in that the sashing would look better a bit wider and the little blue square seem off a bit. Maybe a yellow or bright pink would work!
LynCC
It's quite busy, but I love it! I like the blue setting squares – I think those combined with the white sashing bring lines of calmness into the quilt. The blue makes me think of sky – the whole effect is something like a ton of flowers on a trellis with sky peeking through. 😀
Amber
I love it! I think it looks great. What size are the squares? I think the larger size really shows off the great prints.
~The Bargain Babe
It's going to make a great, cheerful quilt top! I like using large squares for the pattern. Like someone else mentioned though, I'm not a fan of the blue/polka dot intersection squares though. Maybe just a solid color for those pieces? To tone down all the other patterns going on?
jac.
I think it rocks!
Judy
I have many pieces of Amy Butler but have yet to make a quilt. I like the pattern you are using. I think the white or off white will add interest. I look forward to your blogs each time and thank you for sharing.
The Tulip Patch
I DO like the quilt you are making. I think the white helps it and I think the cornerstones all from the same (calm) fabric helps, too. Put anything on point and it looks better, too. I agree w/ your assessment…I never buy prints like this for a quilt. It's very girly and flamboyant and I am just not..plus so many large scale prints together scares me. I think you did a great job
Trudi
Love it! Yes I agree with all the other comments, solid corner stones between the sashing 🙂 I'm doing a pattern with line right now too! I've narrowed the fabrics down to just the blue/greens with loads of white too!
bbonnieblue
Just love the large, bright prints! I could see an aqua setting square – small print or solid. It is so fun to look at!!!<br /><br />https://bbonnieblue.blogspot.com/
MamaLiza
I LOVE it!
Bonnie
I really like this! I'm sure after that quilt is displayed the fabric will be running out the door!;
Nanette Merrill and daughters
Beautiful, really pretty.
Elena
Hot mama! I think setting them on point and the white sashing will help calm it down a lot. And the cornerstones really unify everything. Well done! This will go in my faves for sure!
ktquilts
Don't change a thing!!! Wonderful!
Bobbie
Personally, I really LIKE the blue dots as corner stones.
Catskill Quilter
I think you have a winner! I like the way you have balanced the reds by spacing them; that leads the eye all over the quilt's surface! Love those cut dotted squares at the corners of the sashing!
Kelly O.
I think it's good the way it is…
Kim
Keep the blue dots, they are perfect! It is very Material Obsession, I like it!
Suzie
love it!
Emily {Creative Chicks}
I love it with the blue polka dot intersections. I can see that the polka dot color appears to be the same as the green/teal color in the other fabrics, thus bringing it out a bit.<br /><br />While for me personally it's not my go-to color palette I can definitely see how it would appeal to others. My guess is my teenage nieces would squeal over it!
Des
I think it's perfect. But then again, I enjoy a hot mess.
Jenny
i apologize if my suggestion has already been made…but what about some solids mixed in with the large blocks to try and tone down all the pattern in this collection?
Duff
definitely hot mama. The scale of AB prints is sometimes overwhelming, but your use of white sashing with uniform blue squares (LOVE that blue) gives the design a grounding that it requires to hold the large prints from exhausting the eye.<br />HoT MaMa!!!!!<br />I'm interested to see your binding choices–keep us informed!!
Pam
I made a dress for my granddaughter with this fabric. I used 2 1/2 inch strips for the skirt. Turned out really cute. I used a chartreuse green stripe for the bodice and hem. I think this quilt will be great with the white sashing.
SkippityDoDahQuilts
I agree with the others – The cornerstones seem a little…much? Perhaps a dark solid cornerstone? A jewel tone, maybe? <br /><br />Otherwise, I think the white sashing will break it up nicely! Soul Blossoms has been the stuff of angst for me. I can put bits and pieces of it in a quilt, but I've never done the whole sha-bang. <br /><br />So far, I'm liking it!<br /><br />Happy Quilting!
Beth J
I think it is just right. I really like the polka dot blue, I think it gives the right amount of pop. I agree with your reasoning for the slow moving fabric, I myself have stopped myself from buying some, because I just didn't know what I would do with it. But now seeing your quilt I wish I had bought it!!
Debbie
Absolutely love the colours together!!! These are all fresh and bright colours…. :-)<br /><br />Greetings Debbie<br />https://www.handwerkenzo.blogspot.com/
Michele
Looks great! I love that fabric collection, you made it sing!
Annette
As a beginner with know technical knowledge or fancy schmancy fabric knowing I think the cornerstones really brings out a 3-dimension quality in this quilt and I actually think it is the lighter blue dots that does it. I would keep them just as they are. If you lean back and squinch your eyes you see more the effect. I would stay with quite narrow sashing. Slightly wider but not to much. Let it
Lauren P
I love your quilt!
Donna
I like it. I'd like to see what you do with the sashing….
DJ Rose
I think what's throwing me off is the randomness, but there are two squares that are repeated in their row. It kinda makes the eye want to find other patterns but there aren't any.<br /><br />But I do like this fab. It is tricky though.
Laura
I have to say – I like August Fields by Amy Butler – but the soul blossoms haven't been my favorite as a collection. But I'm v. impressed w/that quilt layout – as others have said, I like the white sashing. When i see this quilt – i see summer!! <br /><br />as far as the cornerstones – I'd prob. go w/that tealish color it is in many of the blocks. <br /><br />~Laura
GStaples
I think it would be cool as a fabric bulletin board! In a young girls room.
tracy_a
I wonder what a darker sashing would do – chocolate? forest or fatigue green? I think the soul blossom colors are hard to decorate with.
Simply Sandy
I love this! And I actually like the blue dot fabric at the cornerstones. Love the way it is set on point!
Megan And Tim
LOVE quilts like this. So great for a fun throw to brighten a room.
Crafty Girls Workshop
I LOVE it! Just LOVE it!
leigh
I LOVE those little blue polka dot squares that go in the corners of the sashing. LOVE!
Cindy
I think it looks really pretty. You have a nice balance of the colors and your simple design really shows off the fabric. I like the dots in the cornerstones.
Live a Colorful Life
I really like it, and the white sashing is great. I'm still trying to decide about the cornerstones. It's funny that some people find them "off" since they are part of the line. Whatever you end up doing will be great, and the fabric will probably now fly out the door!
Miki Willa
I really like this fabric, and I think you have used it well. The wider sashing will really show off the patterns. I don't know why the line isn't selling well. There are some really cool patterns in there.
Judy
I like it! I think that the white sashing combined with the soft blue squares provides a balance to the bright busy blocks.
DeAnna
I love it! And I really love the corners! They add dimension and creativity!!! Keep them!!
Chic Mama
I think I'm in love! Send to moi' ASAP! Kapeesh!? No seriously- that is amazing!
Jackie
Just beautiful!
Pinky
I like it. I think you've done a really smart thing with the fabrics here, because they are such "talkative" prints, they grab attention which may be why shoppers are having a hard time figuring out what to do with them. That said, by making them a feature you're kind of basking in their vibrant, loud nature, instead of trying to suppress it.<br /><br />GREAT! 🙂
Chelsea
I think Its great. I'd love something like this to take out on picnics. I think it's a happy quilt. I like theblue squares too.
QuiltyGirl
I really like it, and I vote to keep the blue print for the cornerstones,
Amelia
I must admit that I didn't purchase any Soul Blossoms because I wasn't quite sure what to make with it, but I think this looks gorgeous and I like the blue cornerstones just the way they are 🙂
Anna Zbacnik
Right away I thought I liked this quilt. It looks very bright and fun. I would agree with the comments about the blue dots–although I think the blue dots could be a great binding or backing.
Terri
The white sashing will look good, but have you considered a light gray sashing? I think the squares will look more jewel-like with gray surrounding them. I don't think you want dark sashing… But really I think it will look great! I can't wait to see what you do.
SewSara
funny to read a few of the comments – i was going to say i LOVE the polka dot squares at the intersections! :)<br />you're brave to ask opinions from quilters!! 😉
Maja
I really love it!<br />LOVE!!!!
marilee
i really like it! i've thought about this fabric for a quilt since it came out. elaine's quilt shop in slc made a great display with it! i agree with another comment, white sashing would work wonders.
**nicke...
Oh Me OH My!!!! I love the narrow sashing. I love the blue dot as the corner stones. The beauty of Amy's soul blossom line is the vibrant spectacular nature of it. It is LOUD and IN YOUR FACE! I think highlighting that is beautiful! I love what you have done! I would keep it just like it is!
CrafterBerly
I agree that it looks fun, and maybe something different at the intersections, besides blue. I can think of a few people who would love this!
Dana
i think it's bright, fun and fantastic! I like the blue squares because they are restful for the eye in all that brightness. You go with the wider sashing and I say it's a winner!
VickiT
Wow. Hasty photo or not ~ it's beautiful. I wish I could give you ideas/opinions, but I'm still really too much a novice to do that yet. I love all the great colors though.
craftytammie
oh, i love soul blossoms, and i'm working out a quilt top for 2 charm packs of it right now! i'm planning to pair mine with either dark grey or possibly navy blue…
