I feel like I haven’t done much sewing over the past week, but Saturday afternoon I had a great time making some Mama-blocks from Lori Holt’s latest book Great Granny Squared.
In conjunction with the release of Lori’s book, the Fat Quarter Shop is hosting a Great Granny Sew Along with an original design by Lori to use with the patterns in the book to create the Mama’s Crochet Quilt. The quilt uses variations of the blocks from the book (so you’ll need the book to participate) but the Sew Along will provide free additional instructions for the new quilt design. You can see both versions of the quilt on the Sew Along page. And here is the PDF download for the Mama Blocks that you will need for the Mama’s Crochet Quilt.
I used the pattern in the book to start a collection of ‘Mama Blocks’. I love the look of these blocks and have wanted to make some for a while. I love Lori’s system of creating your own precuts from your scraps and leftovers and as a result I had a stack of 2 1/2″ squares that were just right for starting these blocks.
I made nine of them and haven’t decided if I’m going to just turn this into a little mini quilt or keep going and make it bigger. Aren’t they cute? They will probably live on my design wall for a time while I decide. Be sure to check out the versions at Nana Company and Little Miss Shabby.
One thing that I discovered while making blocks is that they look best when there is a contrast with the the background or next row of squares. As you can see in the block on the left the ‘pink’ squares have too much white in them to really contrast with the low-volume prints that surround them. So I remade my ‘pink’ block with squares that read a little more ‘solid’ and have more contrast with the outside prints. Not a necessity, but just something I found when I was putting blocks together.
I have a copy of Lori’s book Great Granny Squared to give away to one of you! The whole book is so darling – so many cute patterns and projects in typical amazing Lori Holt Style. If you would like to win a copy, leave a comment on this post. Make sure there is a way I can contact you if you win! Giveaway open until Friday, May 9 at Midnight MST. GIVEAWAY CLOSED
This week we will assemble the blocks and add the borders. If you are sewing-along, I’d love to see what you’re making! You can leave a comment with a link, use the hashtag #churndashQAL on social media, post them on the BERNINA USA Facebook page, or add your pictures to the Flickr page. Or just send me an email. I love seeing the variety of fabrics and colors people use. Happy quilting!
Wow I would so love to win that book. I love the smaller block it is so effective. Looks like you have managed to produce quite a lot of the churn dash blocks to. Cheers karen.schulz@paradise.net.nz
I'm in the process of making a quilt using the great granny square blocks. They are so fun to make! I would love to win Lori's book…thanks for the chance 🙂
Gah! I missed the beginning of the churn dash along. :/ Silver lining…love Lori Holt and it would be fun to have a copy of her second book. Thanks for the opportunity to win! 🙂
I love all these sewalongs! Thank you for the opportunity of this give away! The granny square is my fav to crochet and the churn dash one of fav blocks for piecing, so much eye candy for me. Would love to win the book, don't have it yet, how fun would it be to piece my fav crochet block?!
pamdejw@live.nl
One day I'm going to figure out how to do all the things I want, right now tops on that list are the granny squared and the churn dash along. Thanks so much for the chance to win!
I love your fabric choices!! Once I get out from under the swoon quilt, a baby quilt and teacher retirement handprint quilt, I'll be able to work on a project for me 🙂 Why did nobody warn me this hobby is really for everyone else instead. But it's oh so rewarding to get the ohhh and ahhhhs though! :)april mommajaehn@gmail dot com
At a quilting retreat this weekend, I cut out 238 2.5" squares from my scraps! I now have a big basket of them, and hope to add more as I add more scraps from other projects. I've started to sew them together randomly – 2 at a time – for a particular pattern. They are so fun, though, that I'd love other patterns to use with them!
Thanks for the chance to win another of Lori's great books. I already have Quilty Fun and have loved working from it. The instructions are so clear. The colours are inspirational in your block choices and so suit the retro feel of the granny blocks.
I can't believe i've been quilting for 12 yrs and i haven't made a churn dash quilt! I NEED to get my UFOs caught up so I can make this quilt!! love it!!

I have made the granny square quilt and i loved it! ;p
Would love a copy of this book! I really like how the granny squares block links with crocheting. Quilting and crocheting – my two favorite hobbies : )
I would love to win this book! I've been making crochet granny squares and it would be fun to have them made from fabric. Love it. BTW I just bought your Fabulously Fast Quilts book and can't wait to get started on a quilt. Love love the quilts! Thanks!!
I'd love a copy of Lori's book. Love your granny squares also. The whole big quilt would be cute, however, I am loving all the mini's that Camille R. is doing right now and yours would be cute in a mini also. 🙂 Way cute!
Gosh this one looks like a keeper! I love everything Lori – I've watched all her youtube(s), even ones where she's barely mentioned! What a great designer – for those who don't know, her video on organizing her sewing space (see Riley Blake website) is a knockout. Many thanks for the chance to win the book.
I love the granny blocks! I'm new to these quilt sites and have never made any comments. I am doing so today because I fell in love with the green churn dash blocks and have 12 made so far. If you receive this comment, I would love to send you a picture and maybe get some feedback. lacie20010@aol.com
Love the simple pattern of the Mama Blocks…..great idea of cutting and using scraps. I would love to be considered for the give away. I have recently retired, just hung a design wall and hope to jump deep into the quilting world now.
I would so love to win this as I have a ton of fabric scraps and shirts of loved ones who have passed on to put into quilt blocks!! This would be so awesome!
I NEED this book to get in on the SAL. I made one of the Blocks back when she first showed hers. It is lonely. Love the Churn Dashes too. I have a bunch ready to be put together some day…
Lots of inspiration in that book I bet, would love to win a copy. I have been wanting to make a granny square quilt for a while. Thanks for the chance to win.
Both parts of this post (great granny squared blocks and churn dash) make me want to sit down and sew Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy of Lori's latest book.
I really like your little 'granny squares" they are so cute. Would love to win a copy of this book, fun to explore more possibilities with this block.
I love your Churn Dash and Mama Blocks. Thanks for the tip about making sure the blocks contrast with the background and thank you for the opportunity to win Lori's book. kelleherp at hotmail dot com
This is a great opportunity – thank you for bringing to our attention this wonderful book to enhance my stash of books and inspire Great Granny squared by Lori holt
So cute. I think sometimes it's a cool effect to have one or two blocks with much less contrast than the others. I like how you remade your block, but like leaving those sometimes too. 🙂
I absolutely love those Mama blocks and had a bit of a look around…enticing Quilt Along and the book looks like a lot of fun. Love those fresh colours…
I love these blocks… they're on my 'to do' list – quite near the top, so maybe my next quilt will be a Great-granny square quilt !! I love seeing other quilters choices of fabrics – it's amazing how the blocks almost change before my eyes depending on what fabrics are used. would love to win this book :o)
I've been wanting Lori's book–thanks for the chance to win it! And the churn dash is my all time favorite block. I've got to finish up some other things and get started on it!
This quilt block looks so fun. I have Lori Holt's last book but haven't purchased this one yet. I would LOVE a copy! Thanks so much for a chance.
I am hoping to get the fabrics figured out for the Churn Dash soon enough to join in the current fun – but – as a lifelong hooker, I HAVE to do the Granny Square quilt…. it is IMPERATIVE… just for me 🙂 Thank you so much for your blog, Amy – I am a newbie quilter…. and was STUCK in perfection of classes. YOUR blog helped me "just do it"…. Making the quick table runner, the
You mentioned in your post "Mama's Crochet Quilt"…is there actually any crochet in the quilt( as in sashing), or just the appearance of it in the quilt blocks? Just curious about the name! Looks lilke a fantastic book!
Sewing granny squares vs crocheting them seems so much nicer. I'd love to win the book but look at all the entries ahead of me–159. Wow! A lot of people want this book. Thank you for the opportunity to win it.
For Terry: There is nothing I enjoy more than having a cuppa tea in the morning and reading your wonderful blog. It makes me so happy. The colors you use are amazing. I found your blog (which is my favorite) inside an article from my favorite patchwork quilting magazine from the UK and I am so grateful I did.

I am very new to the quilting world and I just love it.

I
Just happened upon your blog today. Great stuff. Love the quilt on the cover of you book. The insides must be as grand. Thanks for the give away. Have a happy one!
teekayb29@gmail.com
I would really like to have a copy of this book. I have so many scraps to use up and I'm sure I'd find the way to use up a lot of them from these patterns!
I just "pinned" your nine blocks…they are awesome and inspire me to organize my stash this summer and sew….thanks for the opportunity to perhaps win the book! Happy Sewing!
Granny squares are something I have been hesitant to try. The million little pieces thing, probably. I would enjoy seeing a book that inspires and instructs on this block. Thanks.
What beautiful blocks! Would love to make one. Been enarmored with all the Great Grannies on quilting blogs. Love the churn dash, too, especially the colors you chose.
I would love to win a copy of this book and join the sew-along. I really love your churn dash blocks, as well. Have had churn dash blocks roaming around my head for awhile. Little ones, to maybe make a border in a quilt that hasn't come clear to me yet!
Grandma crocheted and these blocks remind me of her. I am attempting your Churn Dash quilt, I have the fabrics picked out and am trying to carve out some time to cut into them! Would love to win Lori Holt's book!
