Three cheers for a LONG overdue finish. This is a quilt that has been on my bucket-list for a long time. It’s based on a Sandy Klop pattern called Merry-Go-Round. It’s one I’ve wanted to make for years and was way excited when my sister-in-law choose it as the pattern she’d like for their wedding gift. Perfect!
The only hiccup is that they got married, oh, 15 months ago. Well, better late (and looking fantastic) than never, I always say. 🙂
The quilting on this was done by Melissa of Sew Shabby Quilting. It was a lot of fun to play with the fabrics for this one and just make it a big, scrappy party. My SIL picked the colors and some of the fabrics from my stash, and then I ran with it. Lots of old and new favorites in this one.
I have to say, this is the biggest and most intense quilt I’ve made in a while and, even though I really enjoyed the process, it feels good to finally get ‘er done. This quilt is made using a 60 degree ruler. I modified the original pattern just slightly to make it so that I could get all of my wedges from one strip-set of fabric by cutting the strips down to a 2 ¼” width and then staggering the strips by an inch when I sewed them together. I also used left over wedges to fill in the sides so that I could make them straight. The rest of the construction is the same.
Happy Wedding Lynn and Eric! Second finish of 2015 and first WIP crossed off the list. Only 47 more WIP’s to go…

Haha! You make me feel better. I am in the process of making a wedding quilt for my brother and sister-in-law, who got married 5 months ago! I finally finished the blocks and need to add the sashing….It is just sooo big I got burnt out! Yours looks gorgeous and gave me a kick-in-the-pants to get moving on mine!

There certainly is something about finally finishing a large quilt that is especially gratifying. Finishing anything is wonderful, but those big boys really feel good!! Congratulations on a gorgeous finish!!

This is such a great quilt Amy! Your tips for adjustment to the pattern are great – wish I had seen that before I made mine with Authntic because wasting fabric kills me!!

I love this quilt and the way you finished it. I am working on this quilt at the moment. (Great minds?) It's fun to make and goes together so nicely. Have half of my hexes done and am loving it. I'm excited to finish mine now. Thank you for sharing yours.
Rosemary
It does go together (the 1/2 hexes) easily but you are right … it is intense and I'm not sure why I suddenly am having issues. /sigh It may be me … lol Ya think? I am still excited about finishing it but I think it's going to take longer than I thought. This is the year for scrappy quilts for me and this #3 and have a couple in progress. This may be "in progress" longer

Aww, thank you Rosemary. That is so sweet. Hang in there on this one! Sometimes I need to just step away from a project that is frustrating me for a couple of days… 🙂

Love how you color-matched all those lovely fabrics. Beautiful Quilt!
Patchwork Reflections
whoa those are giant hexies! very colorful and happy. I like to see quilts outside, great job with the fence and blue truck. Quilts just want some fresh air and sunshine sometimes, <a href="https://patchworkreflections.blogspot.com/2015/01/quilt-talk.html" rel="nofollow">if quilts could talk</a>

Lovely. I am making a blanket/quilt from fabric people brought to our Godsons Baptism. So far I have done some applique of name and date from the minuscule scraps someone gave. I haven't figured the rest out yet. Opps. :(<br />

Wow, impressive finish! Thanks for the tips of conserving fabric. Good luck on the remaining 47 WIPs! :^)

Hey girl! I am in love with this quilt. I bought fabric, the pattern, ruler etc. I cut a set of leftover strips down to 2 1/4 but I am stuck on how big you made the triangles…I know this is probably a no brainer for you but I am completely stuck as a new quilter…help please! Thanks
Amy Smart
So sorry for the delayed reply – (I’m finally catching up on comments made while we were on our trip.) I apologize if I’m way too late! I just line up my triangle ruler/template with the tip going 1/4″ above the top edge of the strips. Then rotate the triangle the other direction and do the same thing. As long as the triangles are all the same size, you’ll be fine. I hope that helps!

When I looked at the pattern that you referenced, it appeared to only show the center hexagon with the hexagon border around it. Looking at yours, it appears to have two outer borders. I am sorry, but an extreme newbie so not sure if I am making sense. Maybe this refers to your moving over 1/2 inch? I didn’t follow that. On the above comment, I assume you are saying you modified the original pattern so you didn’t have to cut all the strips but could use precut ones? Thank you for ANY clarification you can add!
Amy
Hi Gen! So, Sandy Klop has two variations on this pattern. One has only a center hexagon and one outer border. She has another with a center hexagon and two borders just like the one in this post. Here is a link: https://quiltmuseum.org/store/patterns/219-merry-go-round-quilt-pattern.html
I hope that clarifies things a little!
Gen
Thanks so much! That does help! ……. a little nervous about trying it, but I LOVE the way yours turned out, and my daughter is crazy about hexagons! Thank you!
