Whew.
The kids went back to school this week. I’m slowing digging out of all of the things that I kept saying, “I’ll worry about that when school starts…” One of those things was putting my sewing space back in order. It definitely became a dumping ground over the past few weeks as I sewed sporadically and then ignored it for days. I have no regrets of taking things slow and easy this summer, but it also feels good to get things straightened up and organized again.
I also liked hanging up some of gradually accumulating orange peel applique blocks on the design wall. I got a bunch more done during the Olympics, so that felt fun and productive.
Also, I finally posted winners for the Pre-cuts giveaway. Thanks to all for your VERY kind words and comments on that post. I have been so behind on communication of any kind this summer (apologies if someone has emailed me and I never responded). I knew I could never respond individually to all of them, but I do feel so grateful for so many kind words. Thanks to all of you for your patience in my slowness. (Hopefully you were enjoying your own slowness.)
Some fun surprises in the mail this week + something fun to share:
This week I received these fun new tins from the Fat Quarter Shop. Not only are they cute, but they’re handy containers for helping with aforementioned organization. They measure 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and come individually or as a set of three.
I put my vintage hexagons + scissors/needles in one so that I can easily grab it and take it on the go. I love that it’s a sturdy container and I can throw it in my bag and everything stays safe and in good condition.
Also arrived this week: the August Sew Sampler box from the Fat Quarter Shop. This box had so many good goodies! A Bobbin Nest for keeping track of your bobbins, a quilt binding tool to make it quick and easy to join your binding edges, and I’m so excited to try out those Quilter’s Perfect Stick Klips – you can use them for hanging quilts – sounds so handy!
Also included is a “Jolly Bar” – an exclusive Moda 5″ x 10″ pre-cut just for the Fat Quarter Shop – and a fun book of 20 patterns just for Jolly Bars. There are some really fun, fast projects in that book – I can’t wait to give some of them a try. And I love Corey Yoder’s new Sundrops collection!
You can see more of the available Jolly Bars here. And you can learn more about the monthly Sew Sampler subscription boxes here. Each month contains fun new products and projects.
And finally, to celebrate the end of summer, and just for fun, the Fat Quarter Shop has a fun bundle of fabric to giveaway to one of you! Allison Harris’s latest collection Dixie from Windham fabrics just arrived. I LOVE this line – the colors are right up my alley – lots of bright primary colors. There are prints that are great blenders that stand on their own or work with lots of other combinations.
To enter to win a Dixie Fat Quarter bundle, just leave a comment. You can tell me something you’re planning to work on this fall, or just say hi. Giveaway open until Thursday, September 1 at midnight MST. (To leave a comment click on the little ‘word bubble’ with a number in it at the top of the post. 😉 ) GIVEAWAY CLOSED

August 27, 2016 at 10:52 pmwith the change of seasons I am hoping to get a job. Its either that or I have to face doing my own spring cleaning. My dream job is one that pays enough to afford someone to clean all those annoying places like skirting boards and window ledges. I don’t sound like I am seting the bar very high, do I?
I really like your vintage hexies, I gather its a longer term project. Thanks for the giveaway. Tarnia.hodges at gmail

August 28, 2016 at 4:36 amWhen the cooler weather comes, that’s when I love to make quilts. It is probably the power of suggestion, but making them helps me stay warm. Using bright colors keeps me happy during the dark months of winter. This bundle says spring is right around the corner.

August 28, 2016 at 5:23 amHi Amy. I learn so much from your blog. I am helping a local hospice patient finish a quilt. She wanted an old hand-pieced quilt top sandwiched so she could hand-quilt. I only machine piece and quilt, so I am trying to learn from her. Next on my list is starting Eleanor Burns’ Radiant Star. My husband bought me the pattern book and a kit last Christmas. I hope to finish by this Christmas!
Cindy Smith
August 28, 2016 at 5:25 amGorgeous fabric! My WIP’s are about to take over my sewing room. When mowing is over, I’ll be able to sew on weekends. Yay!
LindaK
August 28, 2016 at 5:25 amThe colors and prints in the Dixie collection are just fun! Staying on top of a stitching room is so hard when things get flying…mine is our spare room and when kids come home, it gets cleaned. Of course I also do that in a hurry so it’s always a treat looking and looking for what I need after they’re on their way and then it does stay clean for a couple of days…ha!
Cathy Killiany
August 28, 2016 at 5:25 amSeptember will be dedicated to getting a tote full of quilt tops quilted so starting October 1st or before I’m getting my Christmas quilts started and done early this year. Or that’s the plan! Lol!

Oh and a talk on gardening to sort out by this thurs, at this rate I will have to wing it! Thank you for the chance at the giveaway. Sharon x

August 28, 2016 at 5:47 amI have SOOOO many things to finish up! This summer was incredibly busy and summer is usually my time to get caught up on my many works in progress since we homeschool and back to school means extra work for me. Even so, I’m hoping this fall gives me some time to get back up to date with my block of the months. I also have 2 quilts to bind for a Safenet project for children from abusive situations. Hoping to finish those in the next couple of weeks.

August 28, 2016 at 6:25 amIt’s funny – I’m well past school age and I don’t have kids so there’s no back to school rush but I still feel like September is the start of a new year. This fall I’m determined to organize all my quilt tops and commit to finishing 2 for every new project started!

August 28, 2016 at 7:06 amIt’s impossible for me get beyond being excited at back-to-school time. Now it is my grandchildren who have transitioned back to their classrooms, but this Mimi still gets excited about their new school supplies and the prospect of fall clothes and football games. It’s also time to start thinking about sewing for Christmas, because we’ll just turn around a couple of times and December will be here. So that’s what September holds in store for me. Looking forward to cardigans, colorful leaves and cutting out some new projects!
Louise
August 28, 2016 at 7:07 amI’m going to just try to get sewing again. My daughter moved into a new house and took her furniture that was still at my house. Unfortunately, it was the furniture in my sewing room. That means I just haaad to buy new stuff. Enter IKEA. Love my new space, but have not gotten anything made in it yet. That will change! Thanks for showing new items from Fat Quarter Shop. Those tins are already ordered! Thanks, also, for the give away.

August 28, 2016 at 7:08 amI’m working on clothes for me this fall!

August 28, 2016 at 7:10 amHi Amy! I’ve kept pretty busy during the summer with many quilty projects and I haven’t slowed down yet. Because of all the “to-do” projects swimming in my head, I have no idea what I would do with this fabric. But it’s so pretty!!! I know I’ll come up with something. BTW, you should always enjoy time with your kids during the summer. No one could ever fault you for that. xoxo
Cheryl
August 28, 2016 at 7:10 amI plan to work on a T- shirt quilt for my daughter. I will do the sewing, she will design the quilt using the shirts she kept from her childhood. She saves everything, and when she recently heard about T-shirt quilts, she thought it would be a great way to preserve her memories. I agree! Also, I purchased your Craftsy class on pre-cuts and am eager to watch, learn, and be inspired.
Katy(LethargicLass)
August 28, 2016 at 7:10 amI am working on too many things, but the main one is a 60th birthday quilt for my cousin

August 28, 2016 at 7:14 amI had 5 WIP’s that I did not get to finish this summer because of the heat. I very much hope to knock them out this fall!
Janet
August 28, 2016 at 7:15 amSuch lovely fabrics with such saturated colors! Thank you for the opportunity at the giveaway. This fall I’m not sewing much as I had shoulder surgery three weeks ago. I have learned to sew one-handed and thankfully I had several projects that were already cut. I’m limited to pushing fabric through the needle and ironing! Thankful to be able to just spend some time in my sewing room happy place!
Amy L
August 28, 2016 at 7:16 amThis fall, I’m going to try and get a quilt done for my brother-in-law. He’s the only member on my husband’s side without one to call his own. He recently became a bee keeper, so I’m on the prowl for golden, honey-colored fabrics. Allison’s fabrics are fun! We had a babysitter named Dixie when I was young, so this fabric has sentimental meaning for me.
Jenice Duvall
August 28, 2016 at 7:17 amThis blog post is just saturated with color! I have been trying to finish up several baby quilts – 3 more to go. Every baby needs a “Linus Blanket” and they are so quickly done, I get a lot of satisfaction in making them.
Teresa@aureaskitchen
August 28, 2016 at 7:17 amThis year I am trying to finish some wip… so I have 4 months ahead to finish them…
Gail Duman
August 28, 2016 at 7:17 amI finished 3 WIP’s and feel pretty good about it. Now I’m all caught up and ready to start something new.

August 28, 2016 at 7:20 amI’ve just joined a local quilt guild starting up again in September. So excited to be able to share and bounce ideas off others!

August 28, 2016 at 7:20 amI have at least seven projects I am working on right now. I am also about to start a baby quilt for my new grand baby due in January. Lots of fun and I never get bored.

August 28, 2016 at 7:20 amEven though I no longer have kids going back to school, I still have a feeling of transition every September. I guess it’s just something that never goes away!

August 28, 2016 at 7:21 amI’m in love with your orange peel quilt! I hope I will have more time for sewing after schoolstart… I need a new bag and a quilt is also planned…

August 28, 2016 at 7:21 amOooo. I love goodie boxes. I am trying to finish my current WIP, but it keeps hopping into UFO and back. So, I would love to have it finished soon, I doubt that is likely. I am making a teddy bear for my niece, which I am starting soon. That will get completed in the next week or so as her birthday is coming up.
Karen J.
August 28, 2016 at 7:22 amMy niece will be a first-time grandma in December and has asked me to sew nursery items. First item is cut out. She will be visiting later this week so I can teach her how to sew. Fun!!!

August 28, 2016 at 7:24 amI just want to finish those cushions put aside early this summer…….
Claire
August 28, 2016 at 7:29 amI am loving your orange peel blocks and especially how you can just do one, or a ton at a time!
Jean D
August 28, 2016 at 7:29 amYour adorable orange peels are making my never used orange peel template scream to be used! After buying new shelves (at last!), I spent the better half of yesterday organizing my fabric. I got up early today and went in my sewing room to just LOOK at my stash. Today I’ll be playing with the stash and finishing up a set of placemats for my daughter. In fact, I am using the free pattern for charm pack placemats from the Fat Quarter Shop.

August 28, 2016 at 7:30 amHi Amy, thanks so much at this chance for such a great giveaway! Hmmm, let’s see…..I’m working on three blocks of the month (two from local quilt shops and Pat Sloan’s Secret Garden BOM), so they have priority. And I also want to make more bibs for my students (I’m a special Ed teacher in a severe needs classroom). School is starting this week–yikes!!

August 28, 2016 at 7:30 amHi, Quilting on a queen size quilt and applique on a tree skirt.

August 28, 2016 at 7:34 amI have a million projects underway but have temporarily lost my machine sewing mojo, so I am not sure what I am going to get finished any time soon. I have been stitching away on my Wild Olive 50 States motifs which had been tucked away for way too long, and I got started on the Frosted Pumpkin National Parks Club which started this week, so at least there’s some stitchy goodness happening around here.
Renea Yarolim
August 28, 2016 at 7:35 amI plan to continue on my goal of finishing projects that I started many years ago. Love this fabric. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

August 28, 2016 at 7:36 amI have a couple of gift quilts to work on but I would also love to get started on a fall quilt for myself. Not enough hours in the day!
Marie Cheesman
August 28, 2016 at 7:37 amThose tins from Fat Quarter Shop are beautiful and I can see where they would be especially good for travelling with your cutter. You’ve found other great ways to fill them too. Sounds like you had a great summer break and are ‘heading back to school’ in your own way. I find that September is always a great re-set month – not sure if it’s the conditioning from going back to school for all of those years but everyone seems to pick up their socks a bit and get more organized and focuses.. Lovely prints – thanks for the giveaway. p,s, Your design wall is looking great!
Karen Goad
August 28, 2016 at 7:37 amI will start a quilt with another quilter – we plan on both making a couple blocks a month and sharing our progress – using an old block from the 1930’s Kansas City Star collection of patterns – finding out that many blocks that some think are new are not – thanks for the give away
Anne
August 28, 2016 at 7:37 amOh my, that fabric pack looks delicious. Would it help to say I’ll be working on doing something with that particular pack? No, I didn’t think so. This fall, I’ll be working on my Stash Reduction 2016 list – there were 6 projects on there at the beginning of the year, and now there are only 2 left to go. With the end in sight, it’s nose to the grindstone!
Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
The Lisa Marie
August 28, 2016 at 7:40 amI started several quilts summer. So, I plan to spend the fall finishing (at least on of) them!

August 28, 2016 at 7:47 amI have really enjoyed hand applique lately….started it when I needed something to stitch during the Olympics. I am now working on several sets of autumn coasters for our two daughters and then on to some Christmas gift sewing! It sounds like you had a wonderful summer!
Teresa Stanulis
August 28, 2016 at 7:47 amI spent the last week cleaning off my large cutting table which had become the depository for all the stuff my son decided NOT to take back to college! I’m looking forward to finishing quilt that I’ve had in the works for years. Got the backing ready, the batting cut and now that I have my table back, I can pin baste it and quilt! Then I get to start something new again!
Ruby Clark

August 28, 2016 at 7:54 amOrdered the jolly bar book when I saw it on your blog. Would love try this fabric to make one of its patterns.
Susan Ferguson
August 28, 2016 at 7:57 amThose fabrics would be perfect for a BOM I just signed up for. Please send them my way! Summer’s are great but it is good to get back into our more productive quilting season. I’m sure you will agree though that time with your children is really the most productive and rewarding work we do.

August 28, 2016 at 7:59 amYour sewing room looks so sunny and inviting. Perfect place to sew and dream of future patterns :)! I’m sewing along with two Sew Alongs – one right now and one starting in September. Along with that I have a ‘few’ other patterns I would like to tackle. I actually love that the end is never in sight with my quilting!!

August 28, 2016 at 8:00 amI have fabric for a Halloween throw, and yesterday I bought a kit for an autumn themed quilt. Both will have to wait until I finish my current project, a bed quilt for my granddaughter.

August 28, 2016 at 8:02 amAfter a summer of just for fun projects I will spend a bit of time getting organized too, the catch up on some block of the months and try a pattern in my FQ Jolly Bar book

August 28, 2016 at 8:07 amHi there, I’m working on a wedding quilt for my son and dil, who got married in June! Gah!

August 28, 2016 at 8:11 amThose orange peel blocks look very tempting and great for when things get busy but you need to create something. The colors of the giveaway are so fresh and fun!
Tracey Holly
August 28, 2016 at 8:11 amDixie has all the happy colors I love. I’m someone who has to have bright colors to quilt with.
Tracey Holzer
August 28, 2016 at 8:14 amWow, that is beautiful fabric and thanks for this chance. We farm, so I won’t have much opportunity to sew for the next month or so, but I’m going to start on the Labyrinth pattern in grey and orange for my son. He’s been waiting patiently for a long, long time for a quilt!!

August 28, 2016 at 8:18 amI’m in the last weeks of being pregnant with twins, so that’s pretty much what I’m doing…every once in a while I get a few minutes where I’m feeling up to sewing (and I spend that trying to wrap up WIPs before the babies come), but mostly, I’m sitting around resting.
Lisa C

August 28, 2016 at 8:28 amI totally understand how the summer goes when there are kids in the house! Enjoy them while they’re young…your sewing room can wait! You certainly did get some terrific goodies in the mail! I’ll bet you were dancing. This fall I will be finishing up a CrossCut quilt for my daughter and hopefully will start a different quilt for my son…both will be Christmas gifts.
Christina M
August 28, 2016 at 8:29 amYour design wall is so inspiring! I’ve never tried orange peel blocks but may try those once my first hexie project is finished. Our kids go back to school this week and I start teaching too, so the sewing projects will be on the back burner for a while. Enjoy your newly organized space!

August 28, 2016 at 8:30 amHi, time flies by so fast at the moment. I try to catch up with so many things, don’t know if it will work.

August 28, 2016 at 8:30 amMy plan for fall is to focus on finishing projects. So having some beautiful fabrics as a carrot to complete them quickly is appreciated!
Nicki Bauer
August 28, 2016 at 8:30 amI’m the opposite of you and get most of my sewing done in the summer because like your kids that go back to school so do the teachers. As I get in the groove of things with my new kindergarten class, sewing will take a back burner for a few weeks, but alas I’ll find it again I know.
Annette Stewart

Would love to win your Dixie giveaway. Good to have you back quilting. Carol

My daughter starts middle school and she wants to be on the cross country team; in addition to ice skating, piano, tennis, and flute lessons! So with all that, I hope to be able to get to sew some.

August 28, 2016 at 8:42 amNow that our kids are grown, I took both of their bedrooms for my sewing. Both rooms had gradually gotten messy so I have spent the last two days straightening up and doing chores that I have been avoiding (like shortening the drapes 1-1/2 inches – yuck). I also sewed binding on a quilt that I made a mess of trying to improve my quilting. Needless to say, I’m ready for fun and I LOVE that Dixie fabric.

August 28, 2016 at 9:21 amI am sew far behind on my SS blocks, especially the applique and embroidery designs…stiff joints make it sew hard to accomplish. I am gradually setting aside the pieces and will forge ahead as fall brings a slower pace to everything! Love your mini quilts in your sewing studio…sew sweet! Thanks for the giveaway…keep sewing at your own pace…me too!

August 28, 2016 at 9:21 amToday’s quilt project is quick and easy: measure the quilt top I have already sewn using Kaffe Fasset fabrics and Hofman whites. Take a photo of this quilt top. Send photo and measurements to a friend who is going to Las Vegas, NV, over the holiday weekend so she can go to a great quilt shop in Henderson and get me Kaffe backing fabric. We have one quilt shop in my small city and they do NOT carry Kaffe fabrics. And maybe I’ll win your stack of wonderful new fabrics. They look delicious. Thanks for the opportunity.
Sincerely,
Marrianna

August 28, 2016 at 9:47 amI’m going to be continuing on my UFOs. August 28, 2016 at 9:53 am“Happy” is what comes to mind in seeing those fabrics. Thanks for the chance to win them.
As for projects, I have a quilt top which needs to be sandwiched and quilted. And then, since September 1st is this Thursday, I’ll find out what random number is picked in the allpeoplequilt’s UFO challenge. It’s been fun setting up my list of 12 UFOs and then working on them throughout the year. Having a month to complete a project is generally enough time and when that’s done. I don’t feel guilty about working on something new.

August 28, 2016 at 10:38 amLove the Dixie and also love the glimpse of you sewing room. I have been stressing over how to set up my space. After seeing yours I realize it doesn’t have to be complicated in order to be organized. I think I’ll start by just getting rid of one of the twin beds in the room. I already have a design wall in there but now sew and cut at the dining room table. So can’t close a door on works in progress.

August 28, 2016 at 4:49 pmFirst off, can I just say that I might need to start a red, white, and blue orange peel quilt. Yours is AMAZING! All of my kids, including my baby are in school this year…:( I am hoping to finish my Round and Round {Camille Roskelley} and then get started on a yet to be determined project. Other than I just ordered valley pretty cuts to make your quilt from Craftsy. I have LOVED the color combination since I saw it, but couldn’t decide what pattern to use. Your quilt spoke to me. I also have bought fabric to make your Missouri Quilt Company remake quilt. Here’s to many projects getting finished this year.

August 29, 2016 at 10:35 amI truly enjoy seeing all of your projects. They are very inspiring. This fall my sister and I are making a sampler quilt for our cousin. It will be so much fun because even though we’ve chosen a colour scheme, neither of us knows what blocks the other will be making. The finished product will not only be a surprise for our cousin but for us as well!

Thanks for the chance to win this beautiful bundle.

August 29, 2016 at 8:27 pmOh, I do like your orange peels. I think I’ll have to do one of those someday! Sundrops and Dixie both have been tantalizing to me this week — that yellow! Those blenders! I redirected a WIP today– I decided those ten million HSTs were not going to make a cute sampler quilt after all but they will make a fairly decent broken dishes quilt!– and that feels like progress even though it’s all in my head.
