I’m finally getting my teacher gift together (my last kid in elementary school means I though I’d make an effort to make something cute.) A lot of you are probably already out of school, but I figured I’d share anyway, just incase someone is looking for an idea. Or just pin it for next year. 😉
My Sunnyside Ave fabric felt ideal for a teacher gift! I used the apples-on-white and red bias plaid prints and paired them with some denim I had on hand to make a personalized, padded tablet case. I used my handy Baby Lock Destiny II machine for the embroidery. Pattern came from this laptop bag pattern (minus the straps). I sized it down to fit a tablet. I think it turned out pretty dang cute!
In addition, I added one of my Maker Valley Gingham Apple pins for a little extra flair. You may remember the collaboration I did with Maker Valley about a month ago to design t-shirts and enamel pins. There were four t-shirt designs put for a vote on Instagram.
The top two designs were printed and you can find the two winning t-shirts here. (You can also check out all of the fun sewing-themed t-shirts here.)
Well, I’m so excited because Maker Valley and Stately Type (husband and wife duo) have made the other two designs available as free-printable downloads!
Both designs coordinate with the Sunnyside Ave fabric collection. One print is a bushel of cute, printed apples.
8″ x 10″ Apple Printable available here
The other print is this cute retro, polkadot text that says Stay on the Sunnyside.
The Sunnyside print is available in 8″ x 10″ or 4″ x 6 options.
*note – people occaisionally have trouble downloading printables to phones or tablets. If you are having trouble, try using a regular computer to download and save the PDF file.
In other Sunnyside Ave news, I finished my new variation on my Granny Smith pattern that I shared last week.
This pattern is perfect for a super scrappy look. The original version of this quilt was made with the green dots and plaid as the background (hence the name Granny Smith).
It was fun play with the fabrics in a different way, this time using the Navy Swiss dot as the background so that I could feature more of the reds in the stars.
I pieced the backin with two prints: the red apples on navy and the red hearts. Binding is the navy bias plaid. (I love a good bias plaid for binding.)
Granny Smith pattern available in PDF of Paper versions.
If you’re looking for Sunnyside Ave fabrics, check your local quilt shop or these online sources: Fort Worth Fabric Studio, Lady Belle Fabrics, and the Fat Quarter Shop.
And last, but not least: this full post is brought to you by the letter z. It’s Spelling Bee Saturday at the Fat Quarter Shop blog, featuring a letter/block each week from Lori Holt’s Spelling Bee book. SO many cute blocks in that book! (You may remember the vintage globe block I made a few months ago.)
Since I was sewing the letter ‘z’ this week, I figured it would be a good excuse to sew with some zebra fabric. Works, don’t you think? (Zebras from Melissa Mortenson’s Safari Party fabric.) Also, looks so good with the snazzy new PINK cutting mat and pink rotary cutter from Olfa.
Finally, this month has been slightly crazy and I never got around to picking a cause or writing a post for Sew Goodness. So I propose we channel those efforts toward thanking a teacher since many are making something to thank a teacher this time of year anyway. And teachers deserve all the thanks they can get!
Or use the time to get caught up on another project you’ve started this year. I still need to organize and distribute the log cabin blocks from March. We’ll get there!

Yea for the letter Z!! I can make it quick and get on to other things today. I Love the pin you gave to me at Quilt Market in Portland. I wish I could have gotten others from more of the designers.

I got #quiltnerd and love it! I love everything including that Apple pincushion

Lovely post, the apples are cute! and the tablet bag is even cuter! Unfortunately the Apple .pdf link isn’t working for me either…

Hmm. I’m going to paste the link here separately: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1F-ansdzXj8Gkpf2hz9_zqsGrON11IHt2/view?usp=sharing
Let me know if it still doesn’t work. Sometimes it won’t work if you’re trying to download to a phone or tablet.
I’ll also just email the PDF to you directly. 🙂

Hi Amy, I really like the pink pineapple mini quilt above. I was wondering if you could post a link to the pattern or tell me the size of the finished squares and borders in the quilt. Thanks.
Glenna
I really love the pink pineapple mini quilt at the beginning of the post. Just wondering if you could share a link to the to the pattern or what the size of the sqares and borders are? Love all you patterns.
Amy
Isn’t that cute? A friend gave it to me. The finished squares are 1″ x 1″. I think she used the Jackie Padesky pattern found here: https://patsloan.typepad.com/files/jackie-padesky-pineapple-quilt.pdf

I miss the old blog- just Amy sharing what she was making, and helping others with their quilting. Now it’s promotions and giveaways and product endorsements. And lots of ads. I don’t mean to be a downer but it’s been so disappointing to watch this evolution.
Amy
I totally understand the feelings – it’s been an evolution for many reasons. The main one being this has become my job and I need to earn an income in order to justify the many hours spent each week. I’ve had sponsors for years – for which I’ve been grateful – who help offset the cost of providing lots of free content. But I’ve always been VERY picky about who I work with and what offers to accept, to make sure they are within the quilting industry and the right fit for my readers. (Also, if it makes any difference, you can turn off the ads in your browser and you won’t see them any more.)
That said, I totally understand that my blog isn’t for everyone. I appreciate your honesty and your past support. xo
