We did it! Welcome to the kick-off of the Patchwork Forest Quilt Along! I’m hoping this will be a fun, low-key way to help break-up the Pine Hollow Patchwork Forest pattern into weekly, bite-size chunks and help you get this quilt pieced in plenty of time to get quilted and finished for the holiday season.
This is the first time I’ve ever hosted a Quilt Along (aka QAL). I know that there are lots of different ways to host, but for this QAL, we’re going to keep things pretty simple. Plan to meet back here every Wednesday for the next 6 weeks for a weekly assignment, where I’ll be sharing tips and motivation to help you along the way. We’ll be wrapping up on Wednesday, November 6.
In addition, thanks so some generous sponsors, I’ve got some awesome prizes to share each week, providing added incentive and motivation to stay on top of your weekly assignment. (More on that below.)
This Quilt Along will focus specifically on the new Pine Hollow pattern variation of this design. You will need the pattern for all of the block sizes and measurements for this pattern.
You can find the pattern available as a printed copy or PDF version in my Pattern Shop.
The Quilt Along will be breaking up the pieces of this pattern, focusing on the different blocks and sizes of trees. You are also welcome to quilt along using the original Holiday Patchwork Forest tutorial if you’d prefer, although the block numbers and sizes will be different than the specific weekly assignments for the Pine Hollow pattern.
Not that this quilt needs to be a holiday quilt! I’ve made this quilt using my upcoming Sugarhouse Park fabric collection. I’ve also seen all kinds of color and fabric combinations in the original Patchwork Forest tutorial. (Just look up #HolidayPatchworkForest hashtag on Instagram for lots of inspiration.)
This week your assignment is to start gathering your fabric.
This is such a fun quilt for playing with colors and a variety of fabrics. For this quilt I recommend about 34 Fat Quarters, but you can also use assorted yardage you have on hand.
Looking for some tips for choosing fabric? This post will walk you though my best tips for choosing fabric with color and scale contrast to help your quilt really sing.
FAQ: A set of 10″ x 10″ precuts (Layer Cake) will work for the smallest trees in this pattern, but will not be big enough for the other blocks. (But if you have one laying around and want to incorporate those prints into the quilt, totally use them for the small trees!)
If you’re looking for some fabric inspiration, check out the kits at these shops! Some have kits for the full quilt – others have Fat Quarter bundles to help you get started and then you can mix in other prints you might already have on hand and want to use. SO many options:
From Simply Love Fabrics: a primary colors variation like my original on the pattern cover, as well as a Twin-size kit using an assortment of Riley Blake reds, whites, and greens like I did in my twin-size version (top photo in this post).
Christmas Bundle from Maker Valley (Sold out)
Other shops with fun Christmas/holiday-themed Fat Quarter Bundles include:
If you’re looking for the fabric I used for my original Pine Hollow quilt, Sugarhouse Park will be available in shops in the next few weeks! Stitches’n’Giggles on Etsy is taking preorders for a Sugarhouse Park kit.
Want to see what fabric I’ve pulled together for mine? I’ve always wanted to try this quilt in a low-volume red and white. We’ll see how this turns out!
Boring but important details:
You don’t need to sign-up or register for anything. To keep things simple, just come to this site every Wednesday for the latest post, tips, etc.
There will be prizes – to enter to win a prize share a picture of your progress on Instagram with the #PatchworkForestQAL OR add a picture to the Patchwork Forest QAL post on my Facebook page. These will start next week. I will give more details then.
In the meantime, Sewtopia is hosting an “I’m IN!” giveaway on Instagram this week! Screenshot and share this image with the tag #PatchworkForestQAL and @sewtopia to be entered to win a fun FQ bundle!
(If you’re not on Instagram, don’t worry, there will be lots of other opportunities for prizes along the way.)
Any other questions- feel free to leave them in the comments and I’ll answer this week.
