Welcome to the kick-off of the Patchwork Forest Quilt Along! I’m hoping this will be a fun, low-key way to help break-up the Pine Hollow Patchwork Forest pattern into weekly, bite-size chunks and help you get this quilt pieced in plenty of time to get quilted and finished for the holiday season.
This is the first time I’ve ever hosted a Quilt Along (aka QAL). I know that there are lots of different ways to host, but for this QAL, we’re going to keep things pretty simple. Plan to meet back here every week for the next 6 weeks for a weekly assignment, where I’ll be sharing tips and motivation to help you along the way.
This Quilt Along will focus specifically on the new Pine Hollow pattern variation of this design. You will need the pattern for all of the block sizes and measurements for this pattern.
You can find the pattern available as a printed copy or PDF version in my Pattern Shop.
The Quilt Along will be breaking up the pieces of this pattern, focusing on the different blocks and sizes of trees as well as tips and tricks for each week.
You are also welcome to quilt along using the original Holiday Patchwork Forest tutorial if you’d prefer, although the block numbers and sizes will be different than the specific weekly assignments for the Pine Hollow pattern.
Not that this quilt needs to be a holiday quilt! I’ve made this quilt using my Sugarhouse Park fabric collection. I’ve also seen all kinds of color and fabric combinations in the original Patchwork Forest tutorial. (Just look up #HolidayPatchworkForest hashtag on Instagram for lots of inspiration.)
This week your assignment is to start gathering your fabric.
This is such a fun quilt for playing with colors and a variety of fabrics. For this quilt I recommend about 34 Fat Quarters, but you can also use assorted yardage you have on hand.
Looking for some tips for choosing fabric? This post will walk you though my best tips for choosing fabric with color and scale contrast to help your quilt really sing.
FAQ: A set of 10″ x 10″ precuts (Layer Cake) will work for the smallest trees in this pattern, but will not be big enough for the other blocks. (But if you have one laying around and want to incorporate those prints into the quilt, totally use them for the small trees!)

I’m glad you were late starting, this creeped up on me fast 🙂 Just ordered a hard copy of the pattern. Can’t wait, thanks for all you do!

I’m not a fan of holiday anything for my sewing. Too much negative emotion attachef to it. Can this just be a forest quilt? Not in holiday colors. ?twinzmom@swbell
Amy
Of course! It can be whatever you want it to be.
Janie Jones
I hope you do a forest quilt!!!! I was so tempted to do that so I could use it all year but then my local shop had so many fun Christmas prints I had to go that way but I think I’d love a forest quilt too.
Nicole Lundgren
SUPER cute and TOTALLY doable!!! Love it!
Janice
Where do we go to sign up?
Amy
You don’t have to sign-up anywhere – just check back here each Wednesday. 🙂

Does my Instagram account have to be public? Last time I made my account public all sorts of weird people started following me ?
Amy
I know your concern! Unfortunately, for us to see it, it does have to be public. :/ If you want to make a fake/quilt IG account that works! Or just block any weird new people who start to follow you.;) Yeah, I wish there was another way.

Amy, as we are choosing fabric, is there a ratio of solids/small print/blenders to bolder prints we might want to keep in mind? And thanks so much for doing this – I needed something fun to get me in gear.
Amy
Ack! I’m so glad you said something – I totally meant to include a link to my post about Tips for Choosing Fabric! Doh! I’ve added it. Thanks so much for the reminder!
Marlene Scobbie
This looks like fun. I am away on holiday for another week but will catch up.

I’ve really lost my mind, but I can’t resist this quilt! Joining in for the quilt-along – and so I’m off to pull fabrics!
Ronna
Happy happy!! Ready to start my tree farm???. So this first week we are gathering our fabrics, no instructions yet or do we start from the pattern? I’m new to this.
Carol
I absolutely love your Christmas trees. I am fast and furiously making table runners for Christmas, then will start on a lap size quilt. I am a beginner but love these wonky trees.
Andrea Smith
Hi Amy! My girlfriend brought me an autographed copy of this pattern from the Garden of Quilts show.I watched your beautiful video of the Garden of Quilts and there she was in your video! I can’t wait to sew your Pine Hollow Trees! Thank you so much!
Amy
I love it! I remember when she bought it for a friend. I’m so glad it has a loving home!
Nancy Anderson
Here I go again! Love quilt-alongs as they pace me so I am able to keep up, although elderly. I love forests, used to work at a state park,, so this will be right up my alley. Thank you for doing this!

OK, better late than never. Just ordered the pattern and am going to raid my stash for this one. I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up, but we’ll see! Thanks to Confessions of a Fabric Addict for enabling me to start this one!
Amy
Awesome! Once you get on a roll, these trees come together quick. You won’t be far behind at all. 😉
Nancy Centrella
I hope the saying “ Better late than never applies”. I am going to give it a try..have always admired that quilt!
Charlotte Madison
I made this quilt last year and LOVE it! I plan to make at least two more (one for each adult child’s family) in different color/fabric choices. Thanks for inspiring me!
Amy
You’re welcome! Enjoy!
