I’ve been having fun playing with my Sugarhouse Park fabric making these cute star blocks – these are the beginning of a quilt from a fun new book full of precut strip quilt patterns by Vanessa Goertzen.
*this post contains affiliate links
This pattern is from the quilt Cookie Cutter in Vanessa’s latest book, Jelly Filled – a book of 18 brand new patterns designed specifically for using 2 1/2″ precuts (aka Jelly Rolls or Rolie Polies).
This book is a follow up to Vanessa’s popular book, Charm School – 18 Quilts from 5″ squares so if you’ve been stashing precuts and don’t know what to do with all of them, these two books might be your new best friend.
The blocks I’ve made are from the quilt pattern, Cookie Cutter. I had fun cutting up my Sugarhouse Park fabric and 2 1/2″ strips for these darling blocks.
Aren’t those checkerboard stars the cutest? I definitely need to make a bunch more of these blocks!
I’m always a sucker for classic star quilt blocks.
Here is the full Cookie Cutter Quilt from the book. This quilt finishes at 72″ x 72″.
More Precuts Strip Quilt Patterns from Jelly Filled:
And here are a few more of the precut strip quilt patterns from the Jelly Filled book. Vanessa has a really fun variety of skills and methods used throughout the book – including strip-piecing and other short-cuts.
The book also has a great variety of skill-levels included, with a bunch of quilts that are beginner friendly, and others that will teach new techniques to build your skill set.
Be sure to check out Vanessa’s blog, Lella Boutique to see lots of other variations on these designs as other designers and makers share their creations with the precut strip quilt patterns from Jelly Filled.
You can find Jelly Filled at your favorite local quilt shop. Or you can find it on Amazon. Might be a good one to add to your Christmas wish list!
AND, in other news, I have a copy to give away thanks to Vanessa and C&T Publishing! Just leave a comment telling me your favorite precut strip quilt patterns to sew with. I’ll pick a random winner on the morning of Monday, 11/11. GIVEAWAY CLOSED
WINNER:
This looks like a great book with lots of ways to use the precut strips I’ve collected!! I have layer cakes and jelly rolls, but for me, it’s so hard to open and use them!

November 7, 2019 at 10:01 amI LOVE a good star quilt and yours looks like it will be amazing. Love that book !! My favorite precut is a fat eighth bundle.
I do love jelly rolls but I tend to have trouble opening them because they are just so pretty 🙂

November 9, 2019 at 6:37 pmI like the 10″ layer cake because it is really versatile. But any precut is such a timesaver! This book has great ideas for a jelly roll. Thanks for the giveaway!

November 11, 2019 at 11:25 amI haven’t really experimented with any precuts except charm packs. I love them though! It seems like I have less time to quilt with family and other responsibilities so anything that helps me get a project done is heaven sent. I also love having so many coordinating fabrics all bundled up without lots of leftover fabric at the end of a quilt project to store.

November 7, 2019 at 10:08 amI need to get that book! I have a few jelly rolls just sitting around looking cute but lonely. I found a darling pattern to use with my fat quarter bundle of Gretel. If I got the book, I could make a few quilts from my fat quarter bundle of your first fabric! So many fabrics, but so little time. Thank you for reviewing this book.

November 7, 2019 at 12:48 pmThere are some very cute quilts in this book. Jelly rolls are probably my favorite pre-cut because I find those to be the ones I’m most likely to have a wobble in when I cut them myself. (OK, not true, as fat quarters are definitely my favorite, but I hardly think of them as pre-cuts since I always cut them up into something else.)
Paula
November 7, 2019 at 12:59 pmI like jelly rolls and charm packs, but layer cakes not so much.

November 8, 2019 at 1:18 amIdeally I’d buy a fat quarter bundle of every line I fall in love with, but layer cakes are much more economical and still give me a chunk of each gorgeous print. I also find they work for many jelly roll patterns, which increases the possibilities!

Sherry Gendel
November 9, 2019 at 7:50 amMy favorite right now are the jelly strips because there’s less cutting involved to get started. I’ve even bought a jelly roll of solid off-white to use as sashing in a quilt because I didn’t have time to cut all those strips to finish off an impromptu quilt that I decided would look better with sashing.
SJ

November 9, 2019 at 7:03 pmHmmmm, judging from my stash, it would seem I love 5″ squares best…or maybe I love them least since I still have them! I have several projects made from jelly rolls, so I guess they are the winners, and I still have a few hanging around, so I do need this book! Thanks for the give away.

November 9, 2019 at 7:18 pmI love fat quarters! Small enough to let you afford a big variety of fabrics, but big enough that you can use them for any kind of pattern. They’re my favorite for scrappy quilts!

November 9, 2019 at 7:42 pmI love jelly rolls. I have two different quilt tops I have started that I will work on after the holidays when I am finished with my Christmas tree projects!

November 9, 2019 at 7:45 pmOh my gosh I LOVE precuts! My elderly neighbor taught me to quilt and she suggested I start with some pre cuts, “just to get the feel of it”, and I‘ve been using them ever since! When she passed, her kids gave me all of her fabric because non of them sewed. I dearly treasure each piece knowing she chose it with a project in mind. So grateful for her and the gift of quilting she gave me! Would LOVE to try out some of the patterns in this book! Thank you for offering one up!

November 9, 2019 at 7:45 pmMy favorite is a fat quarter bundle, followed by a jelly roll. There are so many possibilities with a fat quarter bundle!

My favorite pre-cut to buy, Jelly Rolls =), but my favorite pre-cut to sew with is probably a layer cake. I would love to win a copy of this book for my friend! (I already bought a copy for myself)!

I’ve never actually used precuts, but I’ve been admiring some really beautiful jelly rolls and hope to start my next quilt with precuts. Thanks for the giveaway!

November 10, 2019 at 5:01 amChoosing fabric is a challenge for me so precuts (all sizes) really come in handy! It is a good opportunity to see an entire fabric line as well. I’m adding this book to my Christmas “wish list”!

November 10, 2019 at 7:05 amOMG! I love jelly rolls. It is such a special treat to unroll a jelly roll and savour all the colours and prints that explode on my sewing table. It almost feels sinful to pull apart a jelly roll. Happy Sewing!

November 10, 2019 at 9:20 amI love using layer cakes and charm packs but very dear to my heart are jelly rolls aka strips. When i was new to quilting my local quilt shop (Queen B’s in Antioch, CA) did ‘Strip Club’ every other month and using the 2 1/2 inch strips made some beautiful scrappy quilts. Bernie has since retired but one of her employees bought the shop now known as Hilly’s Quilts and while ‘Strip Club’ is in the past there are still classes using 2 1/2 strips.
