This is Week 10 of the Riley Blake quilt block challenge and this time we are making a traditional Bow Tie Quilt block. Plus I’ve got a little Bow Tie quilt inspiration for you!
Once again, for my blocks quilt I’m sewing with my Sugarhouse Park and coordinating Riley Blake woven ginghams.
This week’s block tutorial is hosted by Elea Lutz.
You can find the full Bow Tie quilt block tutorial here.
Typically each week I made a 6″ x 6″ (finished) and 12″ x 12″ (finished) version each block. Since this block is relatively simple, instead of making one big 12″ x 12″ bow tie, I made four 6″ versions. Depending on how I finish my quilt, I may sew them together to create a 12″ block and then make another 6″ x 6″ version? We’ll see!
See below for more information about this sew along as well as links to all of the past blocks.
Bow Tie Quilt Ideas
The Bow Tie Quilt is a very traditional quilt block and works in lots of different settings. Here is an image of an antique bow tie quilt all in blues. I love the monochromatic feel and the different visual textures coming from the prints.
I found this image on Pinterest, but sadly, don’t have more details about this quilt.
Here is another antique bow tie quilt variation using a fun, cheerful variety of colors and prints.
This is a quilt made recently with a reproduction fabric collection to give it a very vintage feel. This quilt is made with a single set of 5″ precut squares. Alternating the bow-tie blocks with the solid blocks is another way to feature this simple, basic quilt block.
The direction that the ties are facing can create a whole new design element with this block. For example, check out this version by Andy:
Would you like to make larger quilt out of Bow Tie quilt blocks? Andy Knowlton of A Bright Corner has a full free quilt tutorial for a Bow Tie Quilt here.
I’m sorry for taking so long to get the tutorial link and pictures posted this week. It’s been quite a week. For so many folks, right?
There are only two more block tutorials as part of this series, for a total of 12 different blocks. After those wrap up, I’ll be piecing my blocks together into a throw size quilt and sharing all of the details. Other Riley Blake designers will be sharing their layouts as well, so there will be options to choose from!
If you are looking for the previous blocks for the quilt along you can find all of them linked below If you’re sharing on social media use the hashtag #RBDBlockChallenge.
