Darling Patchwork Projects in Patchwork USA Pattern Book

Last Modified: November 18, 2019 by Amy · This post may contain affiliate links · This blog generates income via ads · 319 Comments

A few weeks ago Heidi Staples sent me a copy of her latest book, Patchwork USA - 24 Projects for your Handmade Journey and asked if I'd like to make a project and share the book with all of you. I'm so glad I said yes! Read on to see the pillow I made with her new book!

If you're not familiar with Heidi, let me introduce you. Heidi is the creative genius behind the Fabric Mutt blog and Instagram handle. She comes up with some of the most inspirational projects I've seen.

She has a gift for coming up with the cutest little projects such as this Floss Mini Quilt

or this adorable little zipper Penny Pouch. So many of her projects are not only practical, useful, and doable, but Heidi's inspiring fabric choices and gift for fussy-cutting just the perfect piece will inspire your own creative juices.

Patchwork USA has multiple patterns for various sizes of bags and pouches as well as quilts and pillows.

In addition there is a helpful (and beautifully inspiring) chapter about tools, techniques, and Heidi's awesome tips for choosing fabric.

This book has so many great ideas for handmade gifts - if you're looking to create handmade gifts this Christmas - or it would be a great one to put on your own Christmas wish list.

I can't wait to make more of these projects! For my first project, I needed a fun, quick finish, so I chose to make this cute little Patchwork Road Trip pillow.

    Liberty of London Quilting Cottons

I recently got my hands on some of the new Liberty Quilting Cottons from their upcoming Flower Show Spring collection and new they would be perfect for some scrappy patchwork.

I paired them with a classic woven linen fabric for contrast to show off the floral prints as well as some added texture to the project.

It's the sweetest patchwork pillow - perfect for a back bolster or quick nap on a road trip - or to just sit and look charming.

These prints are classic Liberty florals and they're printed on cotton making them less expensive than their Tana Lawns. These prints will be available in the US in January. I'll be sure to share where you can find them as soon as they're available. I think I'll be making more projects with these in the coming weeks. 🙂

Patchwork USA by Heidi Staples is available now, hopefully at your favorite local quilt shop! If not, you can find  it available online.*

And, thanks to Heidi and her publisher Lucky Spool, I've got a copy to give away to one of you! And to sweeten the deal, I'll include a bundle of Liberty Flower Shop squares to use in your own patchwork.

To enter to win, leave a comment. If you want, share something that you're planning to make this Christmas. Or, just say Hi. 🙂 To leave a comment click on the little word bubble with a number in it to the right of the post title. I'll randomly pick a winner by the end of the week (11/ 16). GIVEAWAY CLOSED

    WINNER:

LESLIE SCHMIDT November 11, 2019 at 11:32 pm

I’ve always enjoyed Heidi’s designs. She has a flair for whimsy combined with class. I have a couple of Christmas presents to finish (table center quilts) plus the felt ornaments I make for my grown children every year. I think I may finish in time for a change!

Hey, Miss Amy, your pillow is definitely charming. I saw your forest on the Gram today when Moda posted a photo. Oh My. Stars! I am hoping my friends will choose this quilt for our retreat project next summer.
For Christmas, though, I am working on a Master's Thesis in which I am asking how, why, and who is memorialized through quilts, so I don't have much time to sew, but I still buy fabric like a crazy lady!
Is there any chance you would grant an interview--via phone, email, Zoom, or Skype? I'd love to know your thoughts for my research.

What a fun looking book! For Christmas I am finishing a Christmas throw for my mom. I bought A panel of a Christmas wreath with birds called Swedish Christmas by Norcott. I was going to make it into a pillow for my mom but decided that 22 inches was too big for a pillow. So I’m using your giant star pattern that you have featured on your blog and putting the wreath as the center block. Happy holidays to you and your family.

While I enjoy modern and improv projects, there is a part of me that loves traditional patchwork - it reminds me so much of my grandmother and aunts who were all master quilters. I'm working on a sampler quilt for a grand niece, in Kaffe using traditional patchwork blocks. When I finish it, I hope to make potholders for gifts for friends.

I don't have any Christmas sewing this year. I do have placemats and napkins that I want (need) to finish for our oldest granddaughter. I gave them to her for her bridal shower, and she has been married for a year. I think it is high time that I finish them. I also am in the process of rearrainging my sewing room and my fabric. So that will be done before I start another project. I do have a queen-sized EPP project that I work on in the evenings and while we travel (we just got back from a 2 month car trip).

There is nothing better than a new project book! They are also one reason why I will never be "caught up", My next project will be a lap quilt for a dear friend who just cannot seem to get warm enough.

There is nothing better than getting a new multi-project book! But it's also the reason why I can never get "caught up".
Now, off to my next project!

Last year I made quilts for people for Christmas. This year, I'm currently making a set of placemats. But, I is taking me forever. My creative juices aren't flowing. So, I'll be doing cookies this year!

Hi Amy, I love your new Prep School Picnic quilt! I enjoy your blog and your free baby quilt was the first quilt I made several years ago. The Liberty pillow you made from Heidi Staples book is lovely. I just finished a pumpkin quilt and my next project is a Christmas stocking. I appreciate the opportunity to win this fantastic book!

I will be going to Liberty of London in a few weeks. My favourite place in London but I haven't seen their quilting cottons there. Just the Tana Lawn.

I'm so glad I found your site! While newish to quilting, I've sewn off and on my whole life. Currently, my Christmas projects are on hold while I make items for our December basket at work. Each month a couple people volunteer to put together a basket to raffle off to raise money for our Christmas party. We have a few nurses in our OR that sew and we're in charge of December's basket. Making lots of smaller items like tea towels, potholders and mug rugs to make it more enticing. Thank you for your help and ideas!!
