You know me – I love a quilt that looks trickier than it is and comes together fast. I also really love precuts. They’re the best way to get a variety of coordinated prints for the best price. So combine cool, quick quilt patterns + 10″ x 10″ precut squares (aka Layer Cakes or 10″ Stackers) and you’ve got a great collection of quilts! Melissa Corry of Happy Quilting just released her latest book Fast & Fun Lap Quilts, a fantastic collection of fast, Layer Cake quilt patterns.
Fast & Fun Lap Quilts includes 9 different quilt patterns each requiring only one Layer Cake + background yardage. A great way to use up some of those 10″ precuts you might have been hoarding for just the right project!
These quilts are the perfect size for gifts or snuggling on the couch. (Most in the 55″ – 70″ range.) The quilt above is called Keystone Corner.
This quilt is called Three in a Row.
Another one I’d love to try is this Merry Go Round design. I think there could be some really cool options with this one! I also think it would look awesome as a two-tone quilt.
One of my favorite quilts is called Diamond Dash. I love the variety of quilt blocks – and it amazes me that this 65″ x 65″ quilt comes from only 1 Layer Cake + 3 ¼ yards of background fabric. That includes the scrappy binding too!
Here’s a mock-up using my upcoming Portsmouth fabric collection and using a Cloud (White) solid for the background.
And here’s another variation also using Portsmouth with the Oxford stars print as the background. Isn’t it cool to see how much a background fabric changes the whole look of a quilt – even though the rest of the prints are the same? (Portsmouth fabric will be available in stores in February 2023.)
And here’s a flat shot of the Diamond Dash quilt that Melissa made for the book. I love seeing different fabric and color options.
Fast & Fun Lap Quilts is available now at your favorite local quilt shop. Melissa also has signed copies of Fun Fast Quilts available in her shop.
Be sure to check out Melissa’s blog Happy Quilting for more patterns photos and remakes in various fabric choices – so you can really see how versatile these quilt designs are!
You can also enter to win a copy of the book and other versions of the quilt patterns from the book. Also, each week a different quilter will be sharing their version of one of the quilts from the book AND giving away a set of 10″ precuts (aka Layer Cakes).
This week week the folks at Riley Blake Designs have provided a 10″ Stacker (aka Layer Cake) of Christopher Thompson’s latest collection Blue Jean for this giveaway! Such a great, versatile collection of coordinating blues and whites.
THIS GIVEAWAY CLOSED To enter, leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite size of precuts. Giveaway open until Sunday, October 23 at midnight MST.

I’m new to quilting and love your news letter and the free patterns you offer. I have made one of your baby quilts. I love precuts and fat quarter bundles because I don’t feel confident coordinating fabrics on my own. I really like layer cakes because you have enough fabric for a good sized quilt and you have a collection to choose your backing. Love this Blue Jean fabric collection!
And don’t forget you can check out Fast and Fun Lap Quilts here or Amazon where you can also see pictures of all 9 quilt patterns including in the book.

Amy, I always look forward to your posts because you provide such a wealth of info & tips! My favorite precuts would have to be 2.5” strips because I love to drive fast (on my sewing machine, of course!) & they have lots of straight line sewing that I can push the pedal to the metal! Quilts that use 2.5” strips are often a quick finish with great effects!
Lisa Blumthal
Hi! I am a BEGINNER quilter so I would have to say a layer cake is my fav precut since I would be working with larger pieces of fabric. I am taking a beginner quilting class and found out you can make charm packs out of layer cakes by cutting them horizontally and vertically. I’m all about getting more bang from your buck so layer cakes win hands down! Thank you!

I have an abundance of 10 inch squares as that and jelly rolls are what I purchased for the first 2 1/2 years before I actually made a quilt. And when I finally made one it was from a jelly roll, the 2nd and now I just binded my 3rd are from 10 inch squares turned into 5 in charms!! I just needed more choices and a little room to starch on one. The longarmer said I really have come a long way on my pressing and not scorching the fabric and my 1/4 in is getting better. That is one of the hardest things for me to do. I just can’t get it.!!! I love 10 inch squares!! If you need 3 Charm Pack a layer cake seems perfect to me. Love the look of this book.

If I just love it and can’t decide, (and it’s on sale) fat quarter bundle for the win!!!

I can’t pick just one as it depends on the quilt I decide to make. They are all so convenient.
Julie Lyon
Never met a layer cake I didn’t like. So much versatility! Who am I kidding, I love all fabric! Thanks for your tips and tricks that are so helpful to me.
Maryellen
10” precuts are my favorite. Thanks for all the inspiration!
Linda Kyle
My favorites are layer cakes, too! I started my quilt journey with Missouri Star Quilt tutorials, so I learned about precuts from the beginning. What a great way to get a variety of coordinating prints and get enough “leftovers” to build a stash.
Mary Jo
layer cakes are my second choice, give me a jelly roll and let the fun begin.
Marilynn
Have flannel 10 inch squares in need of a project! This may be the one!
Emily Lynn Wakefield
I like the 10” layer cakes because they can easily be cut to 5” or 2 1/2” sizes, as needed.
Terri Medwed
I love to use layer cakes since there is a variety of fabric and usually there are very little leftovers!
Sarah J. Dempsey
That Blue Jeans fabric collection is just what I’ve been looking for! Definitely a contender for the quilt that’s been in my head for awhile now….My favorite pre-cut is the 10″ Layer Cake. So many ways to use it and so easy to cut into smaller commonly used sized blocks.
Kathryn Errante
My favorite precuts are layer cakes and jelly rolls. I love getting the whole collection in one set.
Linda Kau
Jelly Rolls used to be my go-to precut, but now Layer Cakes get my vote. So many things you can do with these larger pieces!
Cathy Tyrrell
Thank you Amy, I like 10 inch squares because they are the most flexible precut.
Kathryn G
I tend to make patterns that are specific to the smaller precuts, but when using fat quarters I feel like I have a bit more freedom to be creative, probably because there’s more fabric available.
Carla Toppass
As a beginning quilter, I haven’t purchased much fabric yet, or made very many quilts. I’ve used the 10″ squares and I’ve used fat quarters. Maybe I’ll pick a favorite after I get better at quilting.
margaret a senn
I like 10″ and jelly rolls!
Jan
I have more charm packs than anything else!!
Veronica Kersting
I really like the jelly rolls. Thank you for the giveaway.

Layers and charms— 🙂
Marie Zimmerly
I confess I don’t really have a favorite but if pressed hard I’d say jelly rolls. Next up would be the layer cakes. Thanks for the opportunity to win one!
Karen Zink
I have made many quilts for charity over the years as I belong to three quilt guilds, including Quilts of Valor. I have yet to make some thing out of layer cakes and would look forward to purchasing your book to do so. Thank you so much for such beautifully created quilts.
Baa
Any time I get the whole, beautifully coordinated fabric collection in one pack, I can’t help but be inspired. I find 5″ charms limited in size of project, and FQs and 10″s can be overwhelming (and may need to be professionally quilted) so I prefer the Jolly Bars, equivalent to 2 charm packs, which come with a pattern designed for that size of precut. Makes a lap size or table topper, that I might win the wrestling match to get quilted on my home machine.
Janice D
Layer cake. 10 inch – so pretty and versatile
Marge Reeder
I love layer cakes as you can use them as they are, cut them into 5” squares or even into 2.5” squares.
Judy Brechtel
Thanks for the opportunity to win this beautiful fabric! I love all the precuts, but my favorite is the layer cake because the pieces are large enough to really give you a taste of the print. This book looks fun, too!
Diane Paraskevopoulos
10″ layer cakes are great
Deborah Carnes
My favorite precut is charm squares but I’m looking forward to working with a layer cake!
Patti
I can’t choose..I love both 5 & 10” squares. Thanks for the giveaway!
Nancy Brown
Looks Like my kind of book!!! 10″ squares aka Layer Cakes are my favorite precuts!! I have several layer cakes stashed.
Roxy Sherburne
Dear Amy, I love fat quarter bundles because you have more fabric to use when making quilts. I’d love to with the new book. Also, I can’t wait until Portsmouth comes out! Love your blog. Thank you so much, Amy!

Buffie Lorah
My favorite precut is the 10 inch layer cakes. I find thrm so versatile and adaptable. Thanks Amy for the chance to win the Fast and Fun book and fabric.
Jan
Sorry, messed up. Thanks Amy, my favorite is a layer cake.
Toni Anne Potter
If I like the design I’ll buy a charm pack or two. If I LOVE the design I’ll go for fat quarters.
Sheri
Layer cake for sure! Thank you and enjoy your day!
Cindy K Hutchins
I like fat quarters and layer cakes.
prairiekat
The array of fabrics in a small “package” makes any of the pre cuts special, but guess I am a 2 1/2″ fan so bring on the jelly rolls. Thanks for all you do. Kathy in colo
Rochelle Saldana
Charm packs are my favorite!
Kathy Byers
Charm packs have become my new favorite. I don’t have a lot of time to quilt so they’re great for quick projects.
Denise Lamy
I love them all, charms, jelly rolls, layer cakes, and cake pops…..oh well that’s not fabric 🙂
Chris
I’m not sure I have a favorite precut. That said, I do enjoy the versatility of a fat quarter bundle and the number of pieces in a layer cake.
Carol Porter
I used to collect jelly rolls but in the last couple years have switched to layer cakes. I LOVE collecting patterns to use these with!
Nancy G
Oh, a giveaway for quilt patterns, love! I prefer 10″ square cuts, that means I can get different sizes for what I need at the moment.
cowanche
I’m a layer cake lover … gives me the most options for cutting,
Tracey
I like fat quarters, followed by 10” squares.
Andrea Peixoto
Hi. I’m a newbie to the quilting world but I did buy a layer cake haven’t used it yet. I’m on my second quilting class and we use charm packs in class.
But I totally see how much easier it will be for me having all of the coordinating fabrics all ready to use
Carol Brown
Jelly rolls and layer cakes are my favorites. Love having the job of coordinating fabrics done for me.
Jane Opp
My favorite precut is the layer cake. It has big enough pieces to make a good sized quilt and it offers the versatility of also using a charm pack or Jolly bar pattern as well as layer cake patterns.
Thank you for the opportunity to win this adaptable pre-cut!
Deb S
I used to be a jelly roll lover but layer cakes are my new favorites!
Lisa
I love a layer cake. So many possibilities!
Lisa Madsen
Oh I love this book! I just picked up a signed copy at the Garden of Quilts and am currently working on the last quilt in the book! I love all precuts but this week it truly is 10” squares!
Terry
Fat Quarters are my favorite, but layer cakes come is a close second.
Deb E
My favorite precut are the layer cakes – I have over 15″ high of those fabrics, all of which I’ve cut from scraps left over from quilts made over the years. I use the charm squares and 2.5 inch pieces regularly but I hoard the layer cakes….weird, I know! If I were lucky enough to win I’d have the most fun using up some of those fabrics as the patterns in the book are fabulous!
Shelli
Charm packs (followed by jelly rolls. For some weird reason Layer Cakes intimidate me (I feel like I’d have to make an enormous quilt) I have never bought a fat quarter bundle, too rich for my blood ; )
Sar Jan
I like charm packs because you get a taste of all fabrics but they feel more affordable.
Christine Atwell
I love layer cakes and jelly roll strips are second!
karenlittle4a16b4763d
I haven’t met a precept I don’t love yet! They really save a lot of time cutting fabric for me. I do love layer cakes, however I’m undecided whether my very favourites are jelly rolls or charm packs. I have used them more often then layer cakes, however layer cakes do make for a fast quilt! Thank you for your inspiration and hints.
Katie D
My favorite is fat quarters since the size gives many options, though I also love layer cakes a lot, for their variety and versatile size!
Paula Christiansen
I like the layer cakes. And jelly rolls. Maybe because their names sound tasty..?
EllenB
I think the 10″ squares are more versatile than the 5″ squares or strips.
JennyH
Layer cakes.
Susan McFarland
I like layer cakes because they are more versatile. You can cut them in half and then in half the other way and you have a charm pack or cut strips and sew the
Strips together. Also use them for applique background squares. So handy!
Eszter
My favourite is FQ. Though sometimes I play / sew with layer cakes too.
Thanks for the chance.
Chery H
Hi Amy: Really enjoy your blog. My favorite is charm squares 🙂

Karen Hobson

Wendy
Boy what a challenge it would be! Gorgeous range Blue Jean, have only ever used fat quarters before, so book and right fabric, how could you go wrong.
Nancysue
My “goldilocks” choice is a layer cake. When a charm pack is too small and fat quarter bundle too large, the layer cake is just right !
Cheryl Saunderson
I usually buy layer cakes along with matching yardage for a border, backing and binding but if I have a certain quilt in mind I might get a jelly roll. Love that cover quilt but the hugs and kisses one is so cute also!
Rosemary Carden
Love 10 inch squares–so many options
Cindy Wienstroer

Ruth Tacoma
I have purchased but not yet used a variety of pre-cuts. I have so much beautiful yardage of fabric! But I do love to gather a variety of fat quarters for scrappier looking projects, so I’ll say fat quarters. Otherwise charm squares catch my eye too.
mandymend
I love the ten inch the best
mandymend
Ten inch squares are the best
Carol
What a great new quilt book! I love 5” charm packs the best. They are affordable and a great way to use a new line. I have a couple new ones on the way to me now and I can’t wait to use them in a new quilt!
Karen McLain
I love 10 in squares, these designs are inspiring me to make a quilt this fall!
kaholly
I mostly purchase fat quarters, but layer cakes provide a lot of opportunity, too. They can be used as layer cakes, or cut into charms.
Tracy
Such cutes quilts highlighted from the book. And always appreciate a great layer cake. It is such a fun way to create a scrappy look without a ton of leftovers adding to the scrap drawer 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. The churn dash quilt looks amazing in both your fabric collection color ways!

Kim Jenkins
That looks like a good book! My favorite precuts are fat quarters, but they all serve a purpose. Thank you for the giveaway.
Cheryl England
Hi there. My favorite precut was always jelly rolls, but lately I’ve been fascinated by the diversity you can get by using layer cakes. I think I’m changing my mind! But wait…..a few days ago I found a pattern using a layer cake, a jelly roll and a charm set. All three with little to no waste. I kid you not!!!! I was fascinated, now if I could just find it again!
vvrcpa
I love 10” squares! So versatile! Depending on the pattern, I use them “as is” or cut them into 5” squares. I never get tired of exploring how the colors, values and fabric designs “play” together. Can’t wait for your next fabric line and this book! Put the two together = WOW!
Dana
The layer cakes work well for so many projects.
Patty Bates
Going with the popular answer – layer cakes for me (though I usually just buy yardage)
debd49

I’m trying again to leave my fav precut…3 x’s a charm no pun intended! I am a BEGINNER quilter so I would say that a layer cake is my fav precut since working with a larger piece of fabric is easier for me. I am taking a beginner quilting class and found out by cutting a layer cake horizontally and vertically you get charm packs. I am all about getting more bang for your buck so layer cakes win hands down! Thanks for the opportunity of winning this new pattern book!
Lisa Blumthal
