This week I finally finished up my version of the 2025 Riley Blake Designs (RBD) Quilt Block Sampler quilt. This is a free quilt along hosted by Riley Blake Designs starting every January and running through May and features 16 free unique quilt block patterns from different Riley Blake Designers as well as a free layout pattern for the sampler blocks.

Here's a look at my version of this year's finished quilt!

I went with a simplified layout for these 10" x 10" sampler quilt blocks.
I went with a simple sashing (2" wide, finished, 2 ½" wide cut) and cornerstones (again 2" finished) for ease of assembly.

With so many other projects in the works I just wanted to get this one done. You can see the RBD finished layout here.
Did you know that you can do this too? I love Lori Holt's mantra of "You are the boss of your own quilt." This time I decided to just get it done quickly - even if it was more of a simple layout - rather than have another stack of unfinished quilt blocks. 😉
Confetti Cottons Color Palette
Here's a look at the color palette that I used. All of these solids are Riley Blake Confetti Cottons:

I used Sand Dollar in place of white for my background color. On the back I used Storm. (Those photo shows a couple of Dapple Dots basics, but I ended up only using the solids.)
You can find links to all of the fabrics here.

I chose this color muted, modern color palette to coordinate in our recently updated family room.
The finished lap size quilt is perfect for a snuggle quilt on the couch.

Free Quilt Block Patterns + Tips
You can find all of the block quilt patterns, fabric requirements, etc here.

The quilting on this was done by Melissa of Sew Shabby Quilting using her Squishy Clams pantograph. I like the modern take on a tradition pattern.
These sampler block challenges are such a great way to expand and practice your piecing skills.

While I was working on this project, I put together list of 7 tips and tools to improve quilt block piecing and accuracy that can be applied to piecing any blocks.

Do you have any past projects where you got stuck and just didn't want to finish? Try some of these tools.
I'm also giving you permission to just sew them together into a simple layout if you that would help. Started a challenge and only made a handful of blocks? (No shame! I have a bunch of these types of projects!)
Sew them into a baby quilt, or a table runner! Donate the projects to a good cause or person you love. Or even just the unfinished blocks to your guild.

Good news: No quilt police are going to show up and demand that you made the written pattern. 😉 It'll be worth it to have something finished.
Let this one be an example/permission from me. 🙂

Love, love, love your layout. It shows off your beautiful blocks much better than the original layout would have. Gorgeous fabric choices!!

I was not tempted to make the RB Sampler, but I love, love your version. The soft colors are lovely and elegant. Great job.

I'm a long-time follower, but rarely post (sorry). This quilt has such a quiet, comfy look. Great job! I'm so glad you share yourself as well as your quilts.
PS: yay fall!!!
Amy says
Aww, thank you. 😊 And no pressure to post. 😉 I know how life goes!

I absolutely love your colors and your setting version. Any chance you would be willing to share your pattern for finishing like yours? It’s a much nicer setting!
Thank you a head of time even if you decline😄

Thank you! I've got a few other deadlines over the next month, but after that I will try and write up a quick explanation!

Beautiful design Amy! You've inspired me to get started with this one.
I can see this as a baby quilt also, all cozy and peaceful.

You just made me feel much better about my lack of progress on this same project! I am at least 3 blocks behind schedule. My friend and I have done this 2 years now, and she's making 3 in a Christmas fabrics - one for each of her daughters. They're fun to do with others and check out what everyone else is doing on Facebook. Great ideas there! Thanks for making me feel better on a Monday!

Your quilt us just fantastic and your fabrics are an eye catching.
Renee says
did you use all of the colors in the picture (solids)? would i use 6 colors and a background to make this quilt? I cant rap my mind around so many fabrics but the patterns show 6 colors.
Amy Smart says
Yes, I used all of the solids. But can definitely do what works best for you! You don't have to use all of the different shades - just pick the ones you like best. 🙂
