Free Layer Cake Quilt Pattern: Oh Susannah

Published: Jul 4, 2025 by Amy Smart · This post may contain affiliate links · 11 Comments

I've been on a quilt-with-precuts kick lately and today I've got another free precuts-friendly quilt pattern to share with you! This pattern features a traditional quilt block called the Susannah block, only blown-up to a large 16" x 16" scale block. This makes this block perfect for using 10" x 10" precuts - aka Layer Cakes.

The large scale of the quilt blocks combined with the precut fabric also makes this quilt a quick one to sew. The quilt blocks are simple and come together fast and the precut 10" x 10" squares save time choosing fabrics and coordinating prints.

Plus the fabric requirements are simple: One Layer Cake (with at least 40 10" x 10" squares) + background yardage, binding, and backing. And that's it!

If you've got a Layer Cake lying around and you've been looking for something to do with it, here you go!

The finished quilt is 63" x 81 ½" making it a generous throw-size quilt. With an added outside border you could also have a fast Twin-Size quilt. (Twin quilt expansion instructions included in the free pattern!)

You can download the free O Susannah Layer Cake quilt patterns HERE.

*(Minor mistake on 1st edition of the pattern. Bottom of page 2 should say: Create a sashing row by alternating 4 squares 3" x 3" and 3 strips 3" x 16½" strips. Press seams toward the strips.) Pattern download updated to correct version on 7/06.

This version of the quilt is made using the Bluegrass Charm fabric collection by Melissa Mortenson from Riley Blake Designs. I love the preppy colors, florals, large scale ginghams, and toiles included in this collection.

For the background yardage I used Riley Blake's Confetti Cotton solids in Celestial. I used this color because there are so many pretty light/white fabrics in this collection and I wanted them to have some good contrast so that they would pop off the background.

The quilting on this one was done by my friend Monica Steelman. And shoutout to my friend and stunt double, Suzy, who helped with the piecing.

For the backing I used a Riley Blake basics baby pink gingham. The binding is the Navy Floral Stripe from the Bluegrass Charm collection.

I love the way the navy pops against the light blue and the pink. Plus, I always love a good stripe for binding.

Here's a look at this quilt layout in a totally different color palette:

This fabric collection is a Sherri & Chelsea collection a few years back. I love how these prints/blenders + the large scale blocks on the dark navy background give the quilt a more modern vibe.

I also love how the color palette feels at home in the red rock landscape. Those photos were taken outside of Arches National Park in southern Utah.

I personally love to see how fabric and color choice can change the whole look of a quilt! Here's a look at the contrast side by side.

      Hi Amy!
Thanks so much for your post! I totally get the "yuck" thing! The older I get, the more I feel the need to distance myself from "all" that's going on in the world! Thank you for giving us a place to escape even if for a short while! Thanks for the layer cake pattern (I confess to having far too many layer cakes in my stash, so it's nice to have a project in which to use them). Quilting is my escape and I feel the need to escape more and more! I look forward to your posts so keep them coming! Stay well and keep quilting!!

What a great pattern, Amy, and it's so generous of you and Babylock to make it free. I happen to have just a few (cough) layer cakes around, and I'll be using this pattern at least once. Thank you!

Thank you for this free pattern, Amy! Beautiful with Bev's fabric and love seeing it with the previous fabric line by Sherri and Chelsi - a totally different look. So neat to see. Now to gather some layer cake fabrics and try this pattern out :)!
