    Learn to Applique book

Last Modified: February 11, 2014 by Amy · This post may contain affiliate links · This blog generates income via ads · 257 Comments

I am a fan of applique quilts. Boundaries of shapes are pushed when you can applique, creating endless design possibilities. And I am totally in awe of what some people can create with applique techniques. I have to admit, I am definitely still learning when it comes to applique!

I have been gradually working on my applique orange peel quilt. I make a few more “peel” blocks before we go on a road trip or a time when I need a good hand work project. I’m excited to see my stack of blocks growing. I think I’ve tried at least 4 different methods of applique on this project and finally found the one that works best for me.

There are so many different applique methods, each with their pros and cons, I really think it’s all about finding one that comfortable for you. If you are looking to learn a new method of machine applique and hone your skills, let me introduce you to the new book  The Modern Appliqué Workbook: Easy Invisible Zigzag Method 11 Quilts to Round Out Your Skills by Jenifer Dick. Sounds helpful doesn’t it?
Jenifer walks through everything, starting with the basics such as supplies and what kinds of fabrics to use and she does it with so much helpful detail. It makes this book an amazing resource. I have already learned so much just from reading it. She even gives helpful tips to know how to work with different shapes, whether they’re curved, sharp points, or have deep grooves.

Also included are alternative methods of sewing the shapes to the background, layering, quilting and alternative binding techniques.

And finally there are 11 modern project designs for you to practice the different techniques. If you are looking for a great “workbook” to learn some new techniques for modern, machine-applique projects I can recommend this as a great one. And Jenifer has generously offered to give a book to one of you readers. If you are interested, leave a comment on this post. Giveaway open until Saturday, Feb 15 at midnight MST. GIVEAWAY CLOSED

    WINNER: KristyFebruary 11, 2014 at 10:26 PM

I love the projects that have been shown out of this book. Applique is great because you can do it how it works best for you. Your orange peels look good! Thanks for sharing your projects with us. K-

I love your orange peel blocks. I love quilting and travel a lot for work. So I have been trying EPP when I travel. However they are so small I feel like it is taking way to long to see the end result. I would love to try appliqué blocks. I think I must read this book for sure. It appears to me that I would at least think it was going faster if the blocks are larger. Right? 🙂 chamberlinbecky(at
