    Low-Volume Precuts Crib Quilt

    March 27, 2019 by Amy 6 Comments

I’m continuing to work on my goal this year of pulling out and finishing an old WIP (Work In Progress) or UFO (UnFinished Object) each month. I finished one in February and this is my finish for March. It’s a crib quilt that is an early prototype of my Bushel and a Peck Quilt pattern.

Another bonus (and goal fulfilling) aspect of this quit is that it is entirely from my stash. (woot, woot) I have a spot where I keep precut 2 ½″ strips (such as from a Jelly Roll or Rolie Polie) leftover from other projects. When I went to make this quilt I pulled the “low-volume” strips in my leftovers pile – in this red/black/gray/blue color palette. They’re not from any particular manufacturer or collection but I love the scrappy way they play together.

Everything else came from my stash too: gray solid, backing, and binding.  I’m afraid to say I can’t remember the brand or color of the gray solid I used but I’d recommend Riley Blake’s Confetti Cotton in Iron if you’re looking to replicate.

By using a dark solid it lets the low-volume prints really pop. I obviously threw in some reds, blacks, and blues as well, but I really like the way the light blocks ‘pop’ on the dark background. It gives it a more modern look.

You can see the other variations I made in my Sunnyside Avenue prints – the retro-inspired prints on the white background give the quilt a vintage-y-retro more traditional vibe. Isn’t it crazy how the use of fabric and colors can change the whole look of the quit, even though it’s the same design?

(I did remove the corner stones for a more sleek, modern look, replacing them with solid sashing horizontal strips.)

Here’s another modern variation. If you prefer a video class option,  I also teach this quilt design in my Craftsy Preuts video class here.

Shoutout to Melissa at Sew Shabby Quilting for doing the quilting on this one. I choose the Marbled Cake quilting design and like that it adds to the modern feel of the quilt.

I’m feeling proud to get one more UFO checked off the list! It’s extra satisfying because in all honesty, so much of the work is already done that they finish faster. I’ve got another UFO pulled out and ready to assemble for April. It’s a little bigger than the first two I’ve checked off – which have been crib quilts – but the blocks are done and I’ve started piecing the rows. All I need to do is sew them together and get it to the quilter. I’m feeling motivated!

Once again, you can find the Bushel and a Peck pattern here (including Crib, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King sizes available in PDF of Hard Copy format).

Finally, THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of the kind comments on my 10 Year Anniversary post. I read all of them was touched and grateful. You people are wonderful. I’m so lucky I get to know you and so glad we can ‘hang out’ together – at least virtually. xo

That teal and gray version is gorgeous! And “Yay” for moving a WIP out of the closet.

This is great – I like all the different variations. I am working on a UFO too, but it doesn’t feel like a quick finish. I will get it done eventually though.

I really like the colour scheme. Isn’t it satisfying when we complete something with just stash!

Wow Amy this amazing. I love it. I also love the other color variations but you are right, it makes a difference with the light background compared to the dark. Way to go.

It looks like a lot of people are working on ufo’s this year. I’m trying to get some ufo’s worked on as well. It’s nice to see someone making progress on their projects! I love your quilt finish! Congrats on getting it done!
