For the past 4 weeks I've been sharing links to the quilt block tutorials for Riley Blake's Meet the Makers quilt along. This is the final block tutorial in the series. I've been sewing all of my blocks with a combination of my Gingham Girls and Sunnyside Avenue fabric collections.
This week is the final block (#5) from Riley Blake's Meet the Makers quilt along. If you missed, or want to go back and find, the tutorials to the first 4 blocks you can find them here:
Below is the tutorial for Block 5, but you may notice that I modified this block slightly for the variation that I'm making. I'm making the five blocks in the quilt along but will have a modified layout in my finished quilt. (More on that below.)
If you are interested in making the same solids version taught in the videos, you can find the complete kit (including printed pattern) here.
The fabric requirements for each block are (based on the solids version in the video):
Riley White:
- 4 rectangles 3" x 5 ½"
- 4 rectangles 3" x 1 ¾"
- 8 squares 1 ¾" x 1 ¾"
Riley Navy:
- 8 squares 1 ¾" x 1 ¾"
Riley Peacock (turquoise):
- 8 squares 1 ¾" x 1 ¾"
Riley Grass (green):
- 8 squares 3" x 3"
As I mentioned, I modified my block and eliminated the four patches in the four corners and made them into traditional star blocks similar to the first 4 blocks. I did this because I am making fewer blocks and modifying the layout to personalize my quilt with a finished size of 64" x 84".
Here are the fabric requirements for the block that I made. (Keep in mind I also used the no-waste four-at-a-time flying geese method. I've got a tutorial here as well as a cutting chart if you'd like to do the same.)
*Important note: if you use the no-waste method above, you will cut your fabrics differently than the cutting list above.
For the four outside flying geese blocks you will need one large white 6 ¼" x 6 ¼" squares and four colored 3 ½" x 3 ½" squares.
Fabric Req's:
White (background):
- 1 square 6 ¼" x 6 ¼"
- 4 squares 3" x 3"
Yellow:
- 4 squares 3 ½" x 3 ½"
Light Print:
- 4 rectangles 1 ¾" x 3"
Red:
- 4 squares 1 ¾" x 1 ¾"
Navy
- 4 squares 1 ¾" x 1 ¾"
For the final layout I'm making you will need 17 pieced blocks. Here's what I've made. It's fun to see how they've evolved a bit - at first all of the blocks were identical. I've since reverted to my scrappy preferences. 🙂
It's fun to see them all together. I'm liking the scrappy nature of this quilt and have had fun combining my Gingham Girls and Sunnyside Avenue fabric collections.
Next week I'll be sharing my own tutorial for the off-setting block for the quilt that I'm making! As I mentioned, the projected finished size of my quilt will be 64" x 84" (and could easily be modified for a twin-size quilt if you need one that size).
Happy scrapping!
