I am regularly asked to review new publications in the sewing and quilting industry and I’ll be honest, I don’t review all of the books that I am offered. But this is a book I have been REALLY intrigued and excited to see. It is Modern Quilt Perspectives: 12 Patterns for Meaningful Quilts
by Thomas Knauer. (I was scheduled to share my thoughts last week, but things were delayed because of a mix-up with the publisher. I apologize if you stopped by earlier as part of the scheduled tour.)
I have met Thomas in person on a few occasions and really enjoy his perspective on the quilting craft and industry. He is not only exceptionally thoughtful, but he’s exceptionally articulate. (I envy that. I feel like I think about stuff and have my own opinions on things, but have a hard time really expressing what I think intelligibly.) So I really appreciate – and enjoy – reading thoughtful opinions on this creative outlet that I love. Not that our opinions are always the same, but I admire when someone uses their gifts to share their deepest feelings. Not only is Thomas a passionate artist and creator, he is a passionate father. The last time I talked to Thomas he was sewing a Word Girl costume for his daughter to wear for Halloween. Which I loved on SO many levels.

Modern Quilt Perspectives
contains patterns for 12 modern quilt designs. Some are new interpretations of traditional designs and others are completely original. I love this Ampersand patchwork design made from the shades of blue solids and the awesome i-spy novelty prints.
Other quilts are a re-interpretation of a traditional pattern with a twist, characteristic of modern quilts. But this book is so much more than just the quilt patterns. Thomas is a gifted writer and this book is such an entertaining and thought-provoking read. He discusses the symbolism and creative expression of quilts past and present and what he’s learned from other quilters. Seriously, if you love the “whys and wherefores” as much as you love to sew or to be inspired by pretty pictures, I think you’ll enjoy this book. I thought more deeply as well as laughed out loud multiple times.

AND I have copy to give away today. If you would like a chance to win, leave a comment on this post sharing your favorite quilt inspiration. Giveaway open until Saturday, April 12 at midnight MST. Giveaway CLOSED
I have been looking for this book and havent been able to find it, so thank you so much for the opportunity to win it! I really love the ampersand quilt and the thought and joy with which these patterns are written.
For other reviews and opportunities to win a copy of Modern Quilt Perspectives check out these other blogs. Thank you again for the opportunity to dig into Modern Quilt Perspectives. It’s helped me look at my own projects and quilts in a new way.

I was inspired by an American lady I met on my first quilt group a long time ago in Oman. She made a scrap double wedding ring with only the 4 squares that met coordinated. It was gorgeous and I decided to make one too. Many years later ( and a few different countries) I finished mine. It now sits on my bed- queen size. I often think of Jean and all the inspiration she gave me. I think I

To me inspiration for quilts is everywhere, not sure if one source is better than others. I have gotten inspiration from a new source the last few years, though. I have participated in Project Quilting. During the challenge weeks Kim gives you an idea for inspiration and you have a week to make something based on that idea. For example, one time we had to choose a random page from a magazine

I mostly see some random colours together that seem so unlikely and seem so right. Or patterns from everyday things that just cry out to be a quilt. Inspiration is everywhere if your eyes are open to it. I love that quilt with the rounded square

My favorite inspiration are the quilts and quilt tops I found in black garbage bags in my grandmother's garage. My great-grandmother pieced and quilted them in the 30s and 40s with old clothes and feedsack cotton and I find myself drawn to traditional blocks and vintage fabrics. With a twist and some updates of course. I think I've only ever used one quilt pattern! 🙂
Some of my

My quilty inspiration started off very math driven. I was driven to find out exactly how big the pieces in the blocks were, how someone manages to get them together perfectly, construction methods, etc. However, as time progresses, I've taken more to let the recipients personalities and tastes to drive me. I'm inspired by the fact that this is something I can give them that is theirs and

The book sounds great. My best inspiration was when my neighbor's son went to Afghanistan and she was so worried for him. While he was gone, I made her a patriotic quilt completely of my own design infused with prayers for his safety. I was still new to quilting but it was made from the heart and is proudly displayed in my neighbor's kitchen.

I am Just One Mom
Just for kicks I love older (1970s) quilt magazines. The techniques and colors are outdated so I just shake up the colors, adapt to rotary cutting & etc for an entirely different look.
It is why I love books (such as this Modern Quilt Perspectives) that have the same block with different color placement and colorways to create completely different quilts. Fascinating, actually.
giggles
Piecing as perfectly as possible, usually with traditional patterns but really bright, fresh colors is my current motivation. Really enjoying watching the modern quilts, though!!

I get so many ideas from the internet, especially the Blogs, plus Pinterest, etc. My latest quilt finish was something I made up a little on my own just looking at other quilts on line and it looked like stained glass windows in a way, which I intended to name it. While I was putting the finishing touches on it the last day I got a phone call that my Uncle had just died, and coincidentally he

Oh my, inspiration abounds! just looking at the gorgeous pics in this post have ideas percolating! Fabric is the most common inspiration for my quilt-making. I see a fabric that catches my eye and I have to have it and make something with it. It's the combination of color, pattern. and texture that gets my creative juices flowing.

I think I am most inspired by taking classes. I can buy fabric for that project and I can't wait until the class begins.
Tamie
I find lots of inspiration on blogs and in books that I read.

I am inspired on so many different levels For the individual quilt, I am inspired through the colors and intensities of fabrics, what I see online & published, and from older quilts from the past. From a different perspective, it is the sentiment of the quilt itself and the joy it brings to me and those who receive it, that has inspired me to continue to quilt over these last decades.
Regina
90% of the time, my inspiration starts with the intended recipients and works back from there – usually either a pattern or fabric (or both) talking to me. Some come easier than others.

Dondi Murdock
I'm just a quilt copier at this point, but I do pick out my own fabric combinations. I'm enraptured still by the beautiful turquoise blues of the ocean in Southeast Asia…so lush. I think it's the warm water that makes the water appear that color. I never thought I would be such a great fan of this color. Even writing this makes me want to go back again. I might even be brave enough

As a new quilter I am slowly gaining my quilting "identity". Until I started quilting my ideas were of the traditional quilts but once I started following some blogs, WOW, I am gravitating to modern! Specifically "re-interpretation of a traditional pattern" like the granny squares. This book would be wonderful to help me with my learning.
My first quilt inspiration was looking at my mom's books by Nancy Crow, as well as every single Amish quilt I could see! Then, I discovered the quilts of Gee's Bend, and Pinterest. I'm very visual, so I love to look through quilt pictures as much as I love to read about how people make them through today's blogs.

Blogs are a huge inspiration for me! Also, one thing I notice since I started my modern quilting trip, I look at everyday things differently. Always looking for a new pattern in regular items. Sounds weird I know but it's funny how you see things differently when you are in a creative mode!

I am just learning to quilt and right now my inspiration comes mainly from different bloggers and all the beautiful work they do. My inspiration most often for my quilts is either family or friends. For example an associate in my profession asked me to make him a 'wolf' quilt. I have the pattern for the head, but he picked a picture on pintrest for a surrounding 'dream catcher'. I'm planning in my head what will go into this quilt which has grown from a wall hanging to a bed quilt. Whew. Good thing I don

My quilty inspiration a lot of the time comes from the fabulous people in my quilt guild (VMQG) but I'm also inspired quite a bit by music and all my years in indie rock. I have a skull quilt ready to cut that will feature plaids a la 90s grunge 🙂

My inspiration for quilting is keeping my family warm while we hang out together–we love to hunker down and just chill out together–and to decorate my home. I'd love to get Thomas' book because I would love to be able to tell a story through quilting. I feel I can do that more with stitching, but with quilting, I am lost. Thanks for the chance to win!

Given that today is my birthday, this book would be an awesome birthday present.

Gosh, I find inspiration everywhere, sometimes when I least expect it: in the geometry of a stone-paved pathway, in the rise and fall of a city skyline, in the block structures my little guys make.

I love history (I taught High School World History), and I love quilts… I guess those two things are my inspiration for quilting. When I see an old antique quilt, I wonder who it was that made it, how it was made, and where did all the scraps of fabric come from (was it a special dress or baby blanket?). I enjoy making different quilts — small, colorful, big, historical modern, whatever I

My favorite quilt inspiration in books is Sunday Morning Quilts. It has taught me how to use up my scraps and make quilts from them. It also brought me a bee with which to enjoy the sewing with others.

I'm new, but so far all of my inspiration has come from the numerous quilting blogs (yours is awesome!) and YouTube tutorials that I first tried. I'm continually amazed at all of the quilting out there and I want to be as good as those I've seen. Thanks for the giveaway!

tdkcarpenoctem@hotmail.com

I can`t really say where my inspiration comes from. I know that I see a lot of things that I like (internet, shops, life in general) but and idea will just pop into my head out of seemingly nowhere. It might take a while to get it out on paper, but sometimes it is worth the wait lol. Thank you for sharing this opportunity to learn more about such a talented writer and quilter!
Beth
Looks like a great book for inspiration!

All the quilts pictured here are beautiful. My inspiration comes from books, magazines and blogs, any thing bright and different that catches my eye makes it way into my quilts.

My inspiration comes from whoever I'm making the quilt for. I like taking their clothing and decorating style and combining it with their personality to make a quilt that is very "them" to me.

Another great review for this book. Can't wait to get my hands on it. I get my inspiration mostly from the work of all the bloggers I follow.

My favorite quilt inspiration: some graph paper, a bit of fabric, and time. Something always comes to me, which then, involves lots more fabric! I'd love to read this book-thanks for the opportunity!
mmckee at wi dot rr dot com

The work of other quilters is a major inspiration for me. Not to copy but to spark ideas of possibilities and directions that are new to me. The quilts in Modern Quilt Perspectives that you've shown are wonderful, and the info on what inspired them is fascinating.
Lola
I get my inspiration from my sisters. They are brilliant and I love everything they do.

This is just what I need for some new inspiration!

I would love this book so much! I am inspired by my friend's mom who hand quilts every.single.quilt she's ever made and they are the most amazing things I have ever seen!

I get inspiration from many places. I love looking at blogs and Pinterest, but the fabric itself is usually the most inspiring thing for me. It often speaks to me.

My grandmother is my inspiration. Her quilts are eyecatching and simple at the same time. She only graduated 8th grade and many of her quilts are her own design. She is gone now, but I am trying to carry on the tradition of quilting and I would hope that it would make her smile.

I have been quilting three years this summer and I think I'm finally finding my voice. I'm still allergic to solids and I'm not find of off white. I am learning to think more about how I can turn someone else's beautiful quilt on a blog into something that says "me." It's a journey. Thanks for the chance to win.

I find inspiration in the fabric itself and from blogs I follow.

my inspiration comes from beautiful colors and fabrics. And my precious granddaughters, of course. 🙂 eatonjan@hotmail.com

i especially love the colorful squares quilt that is hanging on the ladder. my favorite inspiration for quilts includes looking at blog, pinterest and going to quilt shows. i also like to think about my favorite paintings in an abstract way to come up with ideas for quilt designs.

A pretty, blue sky day is my biggest quilt inspiration lately (maybe that's because they've been nonexistent in New England for a while now, but are recently back on the scene!)… I like to think of myself and my pup laying out in the grass on a gorgeous quilt of many colors, just basking in the sunlight.
hollylolly
I love the thinking that goes into books like this. Always an inspiration for me, as well as traditional or antique quilts
