I am regularly asked to review new publications in the sewing and quilting industry and I’ll be honest, I don’t review all of the books that I am offered. But this is a book I have been REALLY intrigued and excited to see. It is Modern Quilt Perspectives: 12 Patterns for Meaningful Quilts

I have met Thomas in person on a few occasions and really enjoy his perspective on the quilting craft and industry. He is not only exceptionally thoughtful, but he’s exceptionally articulate. (I envy that. I feel like I think about stuff and have my own opinions on things, but have a hard time really expressing what I think intelligibly.) So I really appreciate – and enjoy – reading thoughtful opinions on this creative outlet that I love. Not that our opinions are always the same, but I admire when someone uses their gifts to share their deepest feelings. Not only is Thomas a passionate artist and creator, he is a passionate father. The last time I talked to Thomas he was sewing a Word Girl costume for his daughter to wear for Halloween. Which I loved on SO many levels.
Modern Quilt Perspectivescontains patterns for 12 modern quilt designs. Some are new interpretations of traditional designs and others are completely original. I love this Ampersand patchwork design made from the shades of blue solids and the awesome i-spy novelty prints.

Other quilts are a re-interpretation of a traditional pattern with a twist, characteristic of modern quilts. But this book is so much more than just the quilt patterns. Thomas is a gifted writer and this book is such an entertaining and thought-provoking read. He discusses the symbolism and creative expression of quilts past and present and what he’s learned from other quilters. Seriously, if you love the “whys and wherefores” as much as you love to sew or to be inspired by pretty pictures, I think you’ll enjoy this book. I thought more deeply as well as laughed out loud multiple times.

The book sounds great. My best inspiration was when my neighbor's son went to Afghanistan and she was so worried for him. While he was gone, I made her a patriotic quilt completely of my own design infused with prayers for his safety. I was still new to quilting but it was made from the heart and is proudly displayed in my neighbor's kitchen.

Just for kicks I love older (1970s) quilt magazines. The techniques and colors are outdated so I just shake up the colors, adapt to rotary cutting & etc for an entirely different look. <br />It is why I love books (such as this Modern Quilt Perspectives) that have the same block with different color placement and colorways to create completely different quilts. Fascinating, actually.

My inspiration most often for my quilts is either family or friends. For example an associate in my profession asked me to make him a 'wolf' quilt. I have the pattern for the head, but he picked a picture on pintrest for a surrounding 'dream catcher'. you can derive inspiration anywhere–I've taken pictures of tile patterns, Greek key patterns, lattice work, and wooden blocks/slats to use in quilt blocks. sometimes, just doodling on paper gives you some ideas. would love to try the modern takes on the old patterns, and I'm ready to try some new, modern looks.

Wow. That looks like quite an amazing book! The ampersand quilt is <3 <3 <3 I love pixel quilts. My quilty inspiration a lot of the time comes from the fabulous people in my quilt guild (VMQG) but I'm also inspired quite a bit by music and all my years in indie rock. I can`t really say where my inspiration comes from. I know that I see a lot of things that I like (internet, shops, life in general) but and idea will just pop into my head out of seemingly nowhere.
