    NEW: Hourglass Shuffle Quilt Pattern

Modified: Jul 11, 2026 · Published: Jun 26, 2026 by Amy Smart · This post may contain affiliate links · 1 Comment

Hourglass quilt blocks are one of my go-to favorites for a traditional, scrappy quilt, one-step-up from patchwork. They're perfect for busting through your stash too. Years ago I wrote an Hourglass pattern written specifically for 10" precuts (aka Layer Cakes). Great for confident beginners and experienced quilters alike, this is a fun go-to pattern for a quick quilting fix! For the past decade I've only had it available as a PDF for one size quilt. I'm excited to announce an upgrade to the pattern that includes multiple quilt size options and it's available in Print for the first time! Find the updated pattern options HERE.

The Hourglass block is also known as the quarter-square triangle block. It's a timeless quilt block and this pattern has shortcuts to help you assemble a beautiful, scrappy quilt quickly.

This quilt is also perfect for using precut 10" x 10" squares or Layer Cakes. Having that curated collection of prints ready to go, simplifies the process of pulling fabric for this quilt as well as cutting down on a lot of cutting time!

Timeless Quilt Pattern available in multiple sizes

    The quilt is now available in multiple size options including Lap (57" x 57"), Throw (60" x 77"), Twin (70 ½" x 96"), Queen (99" x 99"), King (109 ½" x 109 ½").

It's a simple, repeatable block, but I've done all of the math for you to know how much fabric you need and how many blocks to make.

Here is one of the first versions I made. I was shocked to realize it was in 2011. 15 years ago! And the best part is, I still love this pattern and quilt! Proof that a timeless pattern makes a great quilt.

This is a great pattern for larger quilts like a Twin, Queen, or King because the block size is big and simple/repeatable, the quilt will come together quickly.

This new version of the hourglass quilt is called Hourglass Shuffle because of the way you mix and match the variety of fabric combinations to make it a really scrappy quilt. I made this one with a 10" Stacker using my Mary Catherine fabric collection. (Kit available here.)

Hourglass Shuffle Color and Fabric Options

Here are a few color options of quilts made with this pattern over the years to show you how versatile this pattern can be. I love this two-tone version using a French General collection that I made years ago. It's so timeless and the contrast is striking with the simple color palette.

This is one that I made for my brother for Christmas a few years ago. Again, I love how the minimal color palette makes the quilt interesting and controlled scrappy. I used a Layercake by Janet Clare for this one.

Shades of blue hourglass quilt pattern for precuts

Using a modern color palette can give the design a more graphic, modern look as with this collection by Zen Chic:

And here's a more traditional scrappy version using a 10" Stacker from Amber Johnson's Honey Locust collection.

This version is multicolored and more scrappy looking. I think it looks like vintage patchwork - especially after the quilt came out of the wash nice and crinkly.

This quilt pattern is so great for using those Layer Cakes or pre-cut 10" squares you've already got on hand - maybe you've bought one long ago and just haven't found a way to use it. This pattern will whip up a quilt quickly and show off all of those pretty fabrics! It's perfect for making a gift quilt.

You can't mess this one up! Especially if you're using pre-curated precuts. Those collections with just show off and shine.

Hourglass Shuffle Quilt Pattern Available now!

The Hourglass Shuffle quilt pattern is available in my shop now!

And in honor of the new release, the pattern is currently marked down 25% - both PDF and Printed versions through 7/13.

Wholesale orders also welcome - this is a great quilt for kitting in shops because of the pre-cuts friendly nature. Reachout directly [email protected] for wholesale information. (6 pattern minimum order.)
