New Quilt Pattern: Scrap Happy Rainbow Connection

Modified: Mar 26, 2022 · Published: Oct 16, 2020 by Amy Smart · This post may contain affiliate links · 1 Comment

I've been working on a rewriting and releasing one of my favorite scrap quilt patterns of all time, my Rainbow Connection quilt. The pattern is now available in my pattern shop including instructions for Baby, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King size variations.

I originally made my first variation of this scrap quilt pattern back in 2012. Last spring I shared an updated version of the design in the Love Patchwork and Quilting magazine. I'm now able to directly release the updated version in individual pattern format.

This quilt is still one of my all-time favorites for using up cherished scraps. It's especially perfect for long, 'stringy' scraps. OR you could easily cut strips from 2 ½" precuts (Jelly Rolls/Rollie Polies) or from Fat Quarters. I will say, the bigger variety of scraps and fabrics used, the better. 🙂

I really dug through my scrap bins for this quilt. But I also cut some some strips from favorite fabrics in my stash if I was looking for just the right pop of color or scale.

The quilting on this one is called Baptist Diamond Curved - a slightly more modern and angular version of a traditional Baptist Fan quilt design - and was done by Melissa of Sew Shabby Quilting. I love the way the quilting gives the quilt texture - especially in the white negative space - but still lets the quilt drape.

This quilt has so many possibilities. It can be made using a variety of colors in a color spectrum like this new variation. Or a little more wild and free like my original version. I think it would also be fun to try a version with an ombre effect!

The hard copy versions are also available for brick and mortar shops from select wholesalers (Checker). Feel free to contact me with any questions!

More Ideas for Using and Storing Fabric Scraps

I've shared my favorite tips for wrangling/sorting and storing your scraps here. Years ago I started sorting and storing my fabric scraps by color. That made it so easy to pull together the monochromatic blocks for this scrap happy quilt.

If you're looking for more ways to use your scraps, I have a fun list of scrappy project ideas here.
