New Scraps pattern - Scraps Inc.

Modified: Aug 12, 2020 · Published: Nov 19, 2014 by Amy Smart · This post may contain affiliate links · 126 Comments

I love saving scraps and I love using scraps. So when I was asked about a year ago if I would like to contribute to a new book coming out dedicated entirely to quilts made from scraps, I jumped at the chance!

The book Scraps, Inc.Vol.1 just came out this month and it is full of great patterns from 15 different designers as well as tips for storing and using your own scraps. I love when I find a book that has a bunch of great patterns all together. This book definitely fits that qualification!

Here are a couple of my favorites, just to give you an idea of a the variety, but honestly it was so hard to pick just a couple! This Sunset Tiles quilt by Jeni Baker is definitely one I want to make.

I also love this quilt, Overcast, by April Rosenthal. It's so unique, I think.

Here are a few other contributors after a book signing at Market last month. Seriously, such an honor to be in this company! Amy Friend, Susanne Woods, publisher of Lucky Spool, me, Amy Ellis (always lots of Amy's!), Sherri McConnell, and Susan Beal.

Here is my contribution. One of my all-time favorite ways to use up scraps is with a traditional log cabin or courthouse steps pattern. I wanted to come up with a slightly more modern twist by grouping my scraps into "warm" and "cool" colors, creating a secondary design in the process. (Which I've since learned is called Japanese Lanterns!)

For this project I really wanted to push myself out of my regular color comfort-zone (I've been trying to do that a lot more this year.) For me, that meant using purple - I hardly ever use purple in my quilts. My favorite method for organizing scraps is to sort them by color. I really dug through my scraps to find those bright, jewel-toned prints (I had to dig extra hard for the purples - but was excited that I actually had some good ones!) And I love the result - not to mention putting some of those unusual scraps to work!

The quilting on this quilt was done by Melissa of Sew Shabby Quilting. I love the way it contributes to the overall look and feel of the quilt.

Speaking of scraps, I have a bundle of strips and scraps leftover from this quilt. I'd love to share them with one of you. If you're interested, leave a comment. I'll randomly select a winner this weekend.

The book Scraps Inc. Volume 1 is hitting shelves now. F If you're looking to add something for your Christmas wish list this year, I highly recommend this one!

Absolutely beautiful quilt! I'm in awe of it - the colors are so captivating. I can't wait to add this book to my collection and hopefully I can make something as special. 🙂

Good idea to put the book on my Christmas wishlist. It will be difficult to choose wich one to make first. I love the quilts from April, Sherri, Jeni and yours as always... Last week I started quilting by hand my very first quilt, aouch my fingers. SO I will start on a new project soon, your scraps would be very welcome. Regards.

Yes, please, fpr the purple scraps! I, too, rarely use purple in my quilts, and my purple scrap bin is sad - the few pieces in there are lonely. Also, I am really digging orange at the moment, so I'd love to have the orange ones, too! Congrats on the publish; this looks to be the next great modern scrap quilt book after Sunday Morning Quilts by Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison.

Can you ever have enough scraps!?! The quilts shown today are wonderful and inspiring. Traditional quilt patterns are my favorite and love how you did the log cabin--traditional pattern with a modern twist. Makes me want to get upstairs to the sewing room and dig thru the stash and find those bright colors and get going!

I've got this book on my Christmas list--I've loved seeing everyone's work pop up on my blog feed! So many great ideas and beautiful quilts. I've been slowly working up to making a log cabin quilt, and I'd love to have some more scraps to add to my growing stack. Thanks for the chance!

I've really been busting out scrap projects this year (it was a resolution) and I love the pattern you used. It looks amazing. I also love April's quilt. This book seems like a must for me.

As much as I have enough scraps myself, I am always intrigued with what fellow quilters have in their stash. It would be fun to win yours. We always need inspiration to use up our scraps, this book seems to provide good ideas. Love your quilt.

Talk about something being HOT, that's the word for your quilt. It's gorgeous and really doesn't look like a scrap quilt. The color combinations are wonderful. Glad you could produce such a lovely creation. Congratulations on the quilt and on the book.

Your quilt is gorgeous. I wasn't aware of the secondary patterns name either. The Indy Modern Quilt Guild recently made a charity quilt with warm and cool colors and the combination was lovely. I'm going to add this book to my growing list.

I have a whole bin of scraps that need to be put into a quilt, but like you, I lack purple! Which is odd, because I LOVE purple.

I keep everything, so my scrap bags are usually full, but like you, I tend to have lots of the colors I love, and less of those I don't tend to use much. Would love to see what's in your bundle. Thanks!!

I hope I am not too late. I love scraps. But first of all your Japanese Lanterns is a beautiful quilt. Every quilt I have seen included in the book has been an inspiration. I must get myself a copy. I have penciled in all the required info on my wish list for Christmas. I hope I can wait that long to find out if I have been nice. Thanks for sharing and offering a giveaway.
