Welcome to the Scandi Hearts Quilt Along!

Modified: Feb 9, 2026 · Published: Jan 6, 2026 by Amy Smart · This post may contain affiliate links · 11 Comments

Hi everyone! Welcome to the Scandi Hearts Quilt A Long. I'm so excited you're joining me.

Bookmark this post - this is the homepage where I share the introductory videos to strip-piecing techniques that we will use throughout the quilt along. This is also the post I will update with links to each week's assignments!

Free Quilt Along hosted by Amy Smart to make a quilt inspired by Scandinavian woven paper hearts

Here's how the quilt along will work: every Tuesday (beginning today, January 6) you'll get a new email from me with links to that week's instructions plus a step-by-step video to walk you through everything. There will also be a post with all of the helpful tips and videos for that week's assignments.

If you're not on the Quilt Along Email List you can sign up here.

You can sew right along with me-or catch up anytime if you miss a week. Or you can start this quilt anytime you want! The posts and videos will stay on my site permanantly as a resource for anyone who wants to make this quilt.

    Before You Start:

    1. Get your copy of the Scandi Hearts Quilt Pattern here. You will need the pattern to make the quilt. ✂️ You can find the pattern here .

    Fabrics I'm Using

    • Riley Blake Confetti Cotton Solid: Peaches N Cream
    • Riley Blake Confetti Cotton Jazzberry
    • Riley Blake Hush Hush 5 Love and Friendship

    2. Choose which Version and Size of the pattern you want to make. (There are 2 Versions of the quilt and instructions to make each version in either a 72" x 72" Throw or 72" x 102" Twin size.)

Version 1 laid out where all hearts are going the same direction like this. (This is the Throw Size of Version 1)

and Version 2 where the blocks are in 'four leaf clover' block like this. (This is the Twin Size of Version 2:)

    3. Decide which size you are making and write it down either in the pattern itself or in a notebook where you will find it easily. This will help you not get confused when reading the pattern instructions.

    4. Choose your Fabric - use the chart on the last page of the pattern to get the yardage needed for the quilt you've chosen. I recommend a solid or print with no direction for the background fabric.

Here is more information and introduction to this quilt a long. This is the first time I've recorded video for a quilt along! I really want to provide helpful guidance as you make this quilt.

(Disclaimer: I am not a professional videographer nor to I have fancy filming equipment, lights, etc. And somehow there is a hideous yellow filter on this. 🤦🏻‍♀️ My goal is go make these videos as helpful as possible, but in the words of the band Chicago "Take me as I Am..." or in other words, give me grace for it not being super fancy or polished. 😅)

I recommend watching all of the short videos below to walk you through the techniques that will help with piecing all 5 of the different Heart Block Variations A-E.

Tips for Strip Piecing and Block Assembly

There are 5 blocks (A, B, C, D, and E) in this pattern. All of them use strip-piecing techniques so I'll walk through and demo the basics of strip-piecing below.

This video will walk you through the steps for cutting straight Width of Fabric Strips

Amy, Thank you - Good detailed videos. I do have one tip to keep your ruler from sliding as you make a cut. I use a weight close to the top of a long ruler. My favorite is a weighted object like a can of beans, an exercise dumbell, or weighted ball. Sometimes I will even place a weighted object on the fabric itself. I would add a picture, but have no idea how to do that.

Great idea. I’m gonna make a rectangular bean bag a fit longer than the width of ruler so that it lays on ruler and fabric both.

I'm using a red layer cake for the reds for this quilt for more variety. Is there anything specific I should be concerned about?

Disregard for now. Too much thinking involved to transition the reds to a layer cake. I'll cut yardage!

I would love to make a scrappy version. Can you assist me to break down the pieces for one block?

Just watched week one’s very detailed videos and I’m sewing my strip sets! Auditioning pink and white with a gray background. Not sure if I will switch to red instead of pink but I had more pink than red solid. Thanks for the thorough videos to keep all of us on track with some helpful hints/ reminders along the way.

I’m really having fun with this quilt along with you, Amy. I started a little late even though I had everything I needed. Caught up this weekend!

Great tutorial on the Scandi hearts. Thank you for the tips for sewing with a scant 1/4 inch and how that is set on my sewing machine. I did experiment with colors. The hearts have been set into table runners as gifts for my girls.
