Well, you posted on my birthday and it’s my NH aunt’s birthday, so I have to submit a memory: any summer I am able to stand in Lake Winnipesaukee in my bathing suit at the family home and pick blueberries right along the shore is the best time. These days, I have to take my vacation before the blueberries are ripe, so I am crying at my beginning of the school year meetings, because I’d rather be in the cool water picking gallons of blueberries.
Kelly Pasley
Hi, I am so delighted to find you! We typically try to have a family get together in the NC mountains for the fourth of July. My husband grew up there and we always took our kids to enjoy the small town parade, picnics and fireworks and camaraderie. Now our kids have kids and we are trying to keep the tradition going as best as schedules allow. Your beautiful quilts have inspired me. I hope to make quilts like these to hopefully serve as reminders of these happy times! Thank you!
Stacy Lindblom

Such a generous giveaway! A favorite memory is running around outside - barefoot with my cousins on a warm summer night - catching fireflies in glass mason jars with holes punched in the lid and then sitting on the front porch drinking kool aid from tin cups - each one a different color - much like a quilt block. My dad was in the Air Force and we traveled around the world so time with my cousins was very special!

Love your post! Summer was always about cleaning and airing the quilts from winter so they would be ready for the next winter. I always slept under 3 to 4 quilts because it was so cold! The quilts were made by my mother and grandmother and all us kids had a hand in sewing/quilting them! That's why quilting is so important to me. It's a family tradition I want to keep going!

My best summer memories date back to the late 1950s. It didn’t seem to take much for our family to make memories— picnics on the creekbank, homemade ice cream made with eggs and cream provided by my great-granny, fried chicken from my grandmother, deviled eggs and baked beans from my mom - it was all SOOO good! My dad would listen to the St Louis Cardinals baseball game on my transistor radio, and my brothers and I played in the creek. This is still my favorite idea of a special, memory-making weekend afternoon.

Nothing really sticks out as being a Favorite Summer Memory (my favorites are more fall/winter-ish), but I think perhaps the feeling of being completely free. My parents had Rules for Summer (like ‘be home by dark’ and ‘do not bring frogs inside the house’ and ‘you must bathe daily, because you are dirty and sweaty and tracking it everywhere’), but there was a lot of freedom inside of those rules. Now that I’m older, I see what a blessing those summers were.
It was lovely to read everyone’s memories. Thank you all!
Karen P

Summer Memories - Everyone gathered at my house (a good thing since my momma wouldn't let us go far) and we played in the backyard and woods behind my house using nothing more than our imagination. We stayed out until the street light (only one there) came on and then everyone had to go home. My momma supplied all the drinks and snacks everyone wanted throughout the day and 9 out of 10 times lunch was in there as well. Fun times growing up in a much simpler time.

Since I’m now in my 70’s I have to categorize my memories into age brackets. I’m picking the ones that were inspired by my mother the 4th grade school teacher. She wanted us to see the USA & camping was the most affordable way. We started with a tent, small grill, ice chest & air mattresses. As the years went by there were upgrades to cots, sleeping bags, Coleman stoves & often these were Christmas gifts. National Parks & Forests, State Parks & Forests were her selections even in Canada Every few days a grocery stop. Besides seeing waterfalls, hiking, Nat’l & state historical spots we learned what familiar foods were called in different areas, how to do different pronunciations, what was popular in attire & different from our selections. We interacted with many people along the way getting directions, just visiting, solving problems or helping out. At the time we didn’t consider it a sneaky education but enjoyed the adventures of seeing new places, meeting new people & doing activities not in our area. There’s only a few states I haven’t been to as college was next but Mom & Dad continued with my sister & into retirement. Only they upgraded to a pickup camper.

I always love reading your email newsletters and blog posts. When you posted last year about your upcoming RB Portsmouth line, I was so excited. It really speaks to me! I couldn't wait till one of my favorite quilt shops had it in. I've got your New Castle Beach pattern and all the fabric, and I'm excited to make it this summer, along with some other projects, maybe a table runner with the left over pieces. I'm a Utah County native and my dad was from Connecticut so as a kid we made a yearly summer car trip across the country to see my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. I love the colonial style homes of New England. I have so many fond memories of going to the beach with cousins, eating lobster, and the windy roads through the woods. Makes me think of that old song, "Over the River and Through the Woods"!
Thank you for always sharing your great family stories, patterns, and projects!

Love the Portsmouth fabric, colors are soft with a slight sun bleached effect🩷. I’m reminded of summer family vacations at cabins on lakes in Northern Minnesota. now, the vivid colors of sun, blue sky, mountains, lakes, & Puget Sound in Washington fill my soul.

Ooh, those quilts are lovely, and, I would love to spend my summer getting in some new cross-stitch finishes!
My very favorite summer memory is from May 26, 1980. It was Memorial Day, and we were at a Westinghouse family picnic; so, it was in front of a whole big bunch of people that I was able to tell my husband I was in labor. It was time to go have our first baby. Almost 43 years later, I still have never seen that many people move en masse that quickly!
Tami
I remember how wonderful a cold slice of watermelon tasted on a hot summer day. 🙂 It was so juicy, that there was always juice dripping down my chin!
auntiepatch69
My mother's birthday was August 7th. Every year my parents would pile my brother, my twin sister, and me into the station wagon and drive across country non-stop from California to my Mom's family dairy farm in Missouri. We would go swimming in the creek, "help" with the milking, play with fire crackers, and fire flies. One week later, we would pile into the station wagon again for the return trip to California. We always tried to hit the desert in the dead of night so that it was cooler but we always hit in the heat of the day.
Mom packed food, fruit, and snacks, so that we didn't have to stop for anything except gas. Pulling into the gas station my Dad would yell, "Run to the bathroom and make it quick!" I'm not sure when Dad went because he was always waiting for us. Mom would count heads before we left just so nobody was left behind. Good memories of Route 66.
Christenah Haefner

I remember going to the lake every summer. We would spend our time playing in the water and looking for clams. I always hoped I would find pearls in those clams. Lol.
Afterwards, we would go home and go to bed, completely exhausted from spending the whole day playing.
And now that I’m older, we still go to the lake every summer with family and friends.

Judy K
My favorite memory was camping near Myrtle Beach and spending the day on the beach the next day.
Denise Nash
A favorite summer memory? My hard-working carpenter dad would come home from a long day at work, sweaty, tired, hungry. After dinner, the neighborhood kids would gather in the schoolyard across from our house, and one or two would come to our door to ask if my dad would come out to play. (We kids were secondary.) We had the best dad! He would be there for tag or hide-and-seek or softball and was a favorite of the kids on our street.
Vickie
My favorite memory of summer was sitting on a screened porch in near total darkness with my grandparents listening to the sounds of the creatures of night; birds, frogs, crickets, etc. and sometimes total silence. Feelings of peace, contentment and safety.

One of my favorite summer memories is having neighborhood block parties at my parents home. Both ends of the street were blocked off, so no cars could drive through. It was a big potluck and fun games to play with all of our neighbors, and the kids were able to play in the street safely. When it got dark, we walked down the block to the park to watch fireworks laying on quilts.
Patty
My favorite summer memory was one 4th of July, we were at the local park waiting on the fireworks to start. Local couples had been dancing the polka on the tennis courts. Sundown came and we turned our lawn chairs from the dancers around to look out over the golf course to see the fireworks. All of a sudden, people that had been on blankets in the grass of the golf course started jumping up and screaming in surprise ... someone in charge of the golf course had forgotten to turn off the sprinkler system for the night!!! Luckily, it was a warm night and the fireworks went on.

Our childhood home was on a cliff above a beach so my siblings created a path to the beach to go swimming when our parents left to do errands and we were finished with our chores. I loved the ocean breeze but instead of trekking to the beach, I would break out my latest paperback and lay in the backyard on the cut Japanese grass. Those were the best summer days!

My memories go way back to 8-hour car rides to visit cousins & grandparents in Canada. Getting a horse & buggy ride with a great aunt & great uncle. Ducking under electric fences to run through the pasture to the river for a swim. Going out to get the cows & bringing them in for milking. Spending a day building our own tent & making a burlap mattress, filled with hay. We were finally allowed to spend a night out in the tent. Sitting under the quilting frame at my grandparents & looking up at all the colors in the quilt, highlighted by the overhead light. I believe this was the start of my love for colors.

Summertime was also county fair time when I was young. Since I had several 4-H projects entered each year, I spent many hours at the fairgrounds. Besides cooking, garments and homemaking projects, I had chickens and a cow I showed. Several years I stayed overnight, sleeping in the cow's manger (when I wasn't talking and laughing with my friends.) It's sad to think it isn't safe for children to enjoy those pleasures of life now. I'm glad to have these as fond memories that I can share with my granddaughters now.
Karen Varble

Summer on the farm meant lots of hard work, but the rewards were delicious. Fresh sweet corn, strawberries the size of tennis balls and fresh eggs with double yolks. After chores, we got to cool off in the sprinkler and play badminton until dark. A big old featherbed sure felt good at the end of the day.

I’ve been so crazy about this book during the promotions and FQS interview with Susan. For whatever reason, maybe the colors, memories of spending Sumer vacations with my family on Lake Michigan came flooding in! the house was set high on the dune and you had to walk up and down what seemed like a hundred rickety wooden steps. Easy when I was a kid! Anyway, thanks for the reminisce-now I want cherry pie!

My favorite summer memories revolve around the extensive road trips our family would take. No frills on the sense that we camped, but full of adventure (my parents splurged on things like riding a snowmobile in an enormous glacier). Many National Park Adventures that have shaped my life and my interests. I love the beauty and diversity of the creation, along with its infinite colors and patterns. I got my first camera at age 9 and loved capturing these experiences. I’m sure that has been the intrigue of quilting for me- the unending number of patterns, arrangements, colors, and possibilities! Thank you for sponsoring this giveaway!

Who doesn't think of red, white, and blue for summer? Such a beautiful, clean color combination (as well as a patriotic nod!) for any time, but especially summer. And almost everyone has fond summer memories!
Angela J.

Thanks Amy. Mine fav summer pastime as a child, riding my horses dawn til dusk.
Margaret L.
I used to love to ride my bike 2 miles into town and either ride bikes around town or go to the new community pool every summer. Then when done playing with friends, I would ride home again. I was fun when the day was really hot and I would ride my bike over the tar bubbles on the road and pop them!
Hannah W
Thanks for the giveaway. I have fond memories of simple summer picnics.
Stacey Hunter
Yes, please! Love July 4th picnics with all our children.
Debbra Pilgrim
My favorite summer memories include playing all kinds of games with my younger brother and my cousins. We all lived in the same neighborhood in the country and we spend hours on adventures in the woods, playing baseball in the fields, and playing hide and seek at one another’s houses. Such fun and fond memories!
Rebecca Bass
My favorite summer memory is spending the week at my grandparents house without my parents.
Ileana
My favorite summer memory is of the last day of class in college (nursing bachelor’s degree, 1996). My schoolmates and I went to the beach and jumped in wearing our WHITE nursing uniforms!!! It was so fun. We got in our cars all wet because jumping in was spur of the moment. One the guys was driving while holding his white pants out of the window trying to dry them. We still keep in touch and laugh about it.
Carol Lynn Langer
Weeklong vacations at the lake were always the best. And, of course, summer camp
Lisa Giesfeldt

Every summer my brother and his family go to the mountains for a week. I take three friends and we go house sit at their house on Lake Ontario to sew while they're gone . So many fond memories but the best is the views from the bay on one side and the lake on the other side of the house that we look at while we sew on.
Sandra Nelsen
I loved the summer parades. My uncles rode their horses in the county posses, and it was fun to look for them. My dad drove his mother's old DeSoto in the 24th of July parade a few times, and that was fun as well. We sat on old picnic quilts, ate juicy watermelon, swatted at Mosquitos, and watched the fireworks over the river in our town. Lots of great memories growing up in Idaho.
Kathy Kendall
I just enjoyed playing outside with all my friends. Riding bikes all day and playing night games in the evening. No distractions such as cell phones, computers and social media. Just making up our own games and entertaining ourselves. Really miss those days.
dorib999
My favorite summer memories include twirling batons with the neighbor girl and going to the pool every Sunday after church with my family. That must have been some time for my dad (my mom stayed home)--there were 8 of us kids under 14!
Sandra DeMers

My favorite summer memories always included visiting my cousins, going to the beach and spending a lot of time outside playing. Warm weather, bugs and ice cream! No school and sleeping with the windows open. Thanks for all your inspiration, always a treat!
Virginia McQueen
My memory is of watermelon. Besides having fresh watermelon and seed fights, we would make “fake” watermelon by using food coloring with lime sherbet in a bowl. Adding cherry or strawberry ice cream with some coloring and chocolate chips. It was cold and delicious. Another watermelon memory is of a quilt my sister made and my second sister used a meandering design and some ants on her long arm.
Fabienne
My summer memory is beach and no school.
Devonna Tabor
Thank you, Amy, for continuing to make the RB blocks using your Portsmouth fabrics. I love them so much! For some reason, that fabric speaks to me. I have 3 projects planned using that fabric because it is so beautiful. I've been collecting yardage to start on as soon as I finish the Spool Quilt I am working on now. I just love to see the combinations you use to make the RB blocks. SO cute! I have so many fun summer memories but I grew up on a farm in the 60"s and that is when cotton plants in the fields had to be weeded to prepare for cotton picking season in the fall. I moved to the big city when I had my family and we did all the things that others mentioned above. Vacations, beaches, ice cream, late summer evenings with the lightning bugs, watching the fireworks, etc. I have lived a great life and I thank you for letting share some of yours through your quilting.
Shirley

Wonderful memories of time spent with our best friends, our cousins!
Jennifer Andrist
I grew up in the desert and remember loving a summer rain. The air would change and become so clean and smell so good. Then if you were lucky when the rain stopped there would be a beautiful rainbow over the mountains. A couple of years ago my daughter was a busy teenager and it started raining one summer afternoon, she was so excited! She went out and stood in the warm rainfall, just like I had as a little girl. It was such a beautiful day!!!
Donna
Popcicles and sunshine and the sprinkler out back!

My favorite summer memories are the birthday parties my mom would have for me in our back yard. I was the only one of us kids with a summer birthday so having my parties on a sunny day with all my friends playing relay games and eating at the picnic table felt really special! When I turned 50 I told my husband and kids I wanted to play croquet in the back yard. They thought I was crazy but indulged me and they ended up loving it and asked to play another round! 🙂
Barbara Johnson
When my kids were little, we would take family vacations to the beach with our extended family. (Or as my dad calls it 'the whole fam damily'!) It was a great way for the kids to get to know their cousins, and for the siblings to catch up!

Summer has always been a time of family vacations. In fact, my husband’s family spent the 4th of July week in Canada every summer. As a little boy, his brother, parents, parents, and grandparents would travel from Ohio to the French River together. We continued that tradition with our children, and even just the two of us as our children grew up and had their own lives and families.
A few years ago, my husband and I moved to northern Michigan and live on a small lake. Now our children and grandchildren come to visit during the summer, creating fond memories.
Susan Du

But one of my favorite memories was riding home in the car after and seeing the beautiful stars in the sky. It was so clear that the whole sky was lit like a blanket of stars.

The last few years our numbers are down to 4-6 adults but it's still a very important part of our summer.

First off, I love your Portsmouth fabric line! It fits with my favorite summer memories. We spent most weekends and a few weeks every summer out at our cottage in Michigan. There was always about 20 or 30 people out there and we always had a blast in the water, playing cards, going for walks, water skiing and tubing. Summer in Michigan is my favorite time of year!
