This past weekend has been SO nice. It was a 3-day holiday weekend here in the US. My smart husband planned a getaway at a little mountain town for the weekend. It's not far from home, but just getting away from the house with no distractions is such a GOOD thing.
That said, I still brought 3 quilts to finish binding. (Of course! Doesn't everyone haul three extra quilts with them on a quick weekend vacation?) Actually, the quilts came in really handy for snuggling with while we watched a couple of movies and sporting events and took naps.
Don't worry, we also did proactive things like go sledding and visit the Midway Ice Castles attraction - which was pretty cool.
It was a huge fortress/castle made entirely of icicles and ice walls. It was pretty spectacular. All in all, it was the perfect combination of doing stuff and just vegging. And scenic winter. I totally loved it.
A couple of quick things. One of the quilts I bound over the weekend was this printed panel Lattice quilt from Pattern Jam. I had some gray Cuddle fabric I used for backing, which makes it heavy and cozy. I quilted it somewhat minimalistically - right on the sashing lines and then tacked down once inside each big square. It gives it kind of a "tied-quilt" feel - it's a little puffier and heavier.
I bound the quilt using some V&Co Moda fabric I had on hand and it looks perfect. I love when I find just the right thing in my stash.
I washed the quilt for the first time as well. Remember, this is a custom printed one-piece panel - rather than a quilt cut and pieced from numerous fabrics. The printed fabric feels a little bit stiffer/rougher, so I was curious to see if it would soften up when I washed it. It did soften some. The gray faded slightly as well. Our purpose for this quilt is more of a throw-snuggle blanket, rather than an heirloom quilt, so I'm okay with it. I think these panels would work well for art/wall pieces where they aren't going to get washed as much. Still it's cute and a fun, fast finish, so you can weigh those variables.
Finally, are you aware of Lori Holt's new Bloom Sew Along? It just started yesterday. There will be 20 new (and free!) applique flower quilt blocks, one per week over the next 20 weeks. You can read more and follow along here.

Sounds like such a fun weekend! Sometimes the quick getaways are the best. Everything is boiled down to the essentials (which include binding of course!)
