Lots of pretty patchwork to share with you all today.
First of all: fun new book, Quilting Row by Row; 27 Skill Building Techniques*. This book is a GREAT primer for learning and teaching all kinds of piecing and quilt-making tips and methods.
The main project in the book is a row-by-row sampler quilt with 11 rows - each row teaches a different technique starting with simple patchwork and flying geese and moving on to more complex processes such as advanced piecing, applique, and paper-piecing. Each Row pattern has very clear photos and illustrations to help you understand and apply each new concept.
It's a great book for beginners because it walks through the whole process so thoroughly, including an introduction to tools and notions, and basics such as accurate cutting and piecing.
Another thing I really loved about this book is that it includes all full-size patterns for applique and paper-piecing. I experimented with this cute paper-pieced posy block. I still needed to copy the pattern out of the book, but I didn't need to worry about resizing it to a certain %. (I find that if I have to resize a pattern, I'm less likely to actually make the block.) There is also a pullout section with the applique and embroidery patterns printed full-size, making it so easy to trace.
This little paper-pieced posy block was so fun to make - I really want to make a bunch more!
In addition to the main Row by Row quilt, there are two bonus projects where the new techniques and designs are incorporated.
If you are looking for a book to build some of your quilting skills and learn new techniques or looking for a pattern for teaching other quilters, I highly recommend this one! Great project, great photos and clear instruction. I think it's a winner.
And if you'd like to try new things, the authors Jeanette and Erin are hosting a Quilt Along for 2018! Check out their blog for more details on the Quiltalong.
AND Jeanette and Erin have a copy of Quilting Row by Row to give away to one of you! Just leave a comment on this post sharing a quilting technique you want to learn and I'll randomly pick a winner next week! (To leave a comment, click on the word bubble with a number in it at the top right corner of this post.)
Speaking of sampler quilts, I finished my last blocks for the Fat Quarter Shop Patchwork Quilt Along! I am feeling SUPER proud of myself for staying caught up on my blocks this year. (**pats self on back**)
You can read all about the Patchwork Quilt Along as well as get the free pattern for the December block by visiting the Fat Quarter Shop Blog (as well as links to each month's pattern from 2017).
My blocks have been living on my design wall next to my machine for the past few months. I LOVE seeing them all together and am really excited to put them all into a quilt, hopefully in January.
I used the Bonnie and Camille kit from the Fat Quarter Shop for my blocks, supplementing a little with other Bonnie and Camille prints I had in my stash. (BTW - if you've had your eye on one of these kits, now is the best time to get one! All Quilt Kits at the Fat Quarter Shop are marked down as their Christmas deal today only (Friday 12/15 - Sat 12/16 at 10 am CST) for their Countdown to Christmas Daily Deal.

There are so many posts here and I read through many of them. We all have a lot to learn! I was at a shop hop last month and was all set to buy a Christmas tree pattern from my favorite quilt shop, when I realized it was paper pieced. Of course! Aren’t all those really fabulous patterns paper pieced ?! The wonderful clerk laid it all out and gave me a quick but thorough run through of how to do it- adding personal tips of her own. My eyes glazed over. Then my hearing got weak. Soon it seemed, she was speaking in a foreign tongue. Exactly how the heck was I going to make that Christmas tree without someone holding my hand??? It’s still not done. Not even started except for all the fabric laid out and waiting. I’m scared to death of that amazingly cute Christmas tree. I’ve made two other projects since then, but no Christmas tree. 🙁
Clearly, I need help.....
