Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Summer Bunting Quilt

A few weeks ago I shared a new red, white, and blue patriotic quilt I’d started using my Summer Bunting Pattern and featuring 4th of July fabric from Riley Blake Designs.

Here is the final result – ahh, I’m totally pleased with how it turned out!

I made a smaller version of my original Summer Bunting quilt. This quilt is fat quarter friendly and with the large scale quilt blocks it comes together SO quickly.

Let Freedom Soar and Land of Liberty fabric from Riley Blake Designs

The prints I used in this quilt are from the Riley Blake 4th of July collections Let Freedom Soar (including that large text print and navy star border) and Land of Liberty (including the florals, small text print, and ginghams.)

The background fabric is a woven Indigo Chambray – also from Riley Blake. I LUV how the colored flags pop off the indigo/denim looking background.

Red, White, and Blue bias quilt binding - patriotic basic stripe from Riley Blake Designs

For the binding I used a red, white, and blue basic Patriotic stripe from Riley Blake, cut on the bias.

For this version I made a smaller variation of the original Summer Bunting pattern (like I did with this Halloween version), making only 24 flags and adding a 5″ border all the way around to enlarge the quilt. (That modification also helped the quilt come together quickly.) This ended up a nice size throw-quilt.

I’m in the process of updating the original pattern to include this size quilt, but in the mean time here are the fabric requirements for the smaller version.

Here are the fabric requirements if you choose to make this smaller (61″ x 78″) version of the Summer Bunting Quilt:

  • Bunting flags: at least 12 Fat Quarters (or assorted scraps)
  • Background print: 2 1/4 yards
  • Outside Border fabric:  1 yard (cut 7 strips 5″ x Width of Fabric)
  • Binding: 1/2 yard (cut 7 strips 2 1/2″ x Width of Fabric)
  • Backing 3 3/4 yards

You will make 24 Flag blocks, so adjust the Background fabric pieces cutting from 40 to 24.

(If you’ve already purchased – or want to purchase now – the PDF version of the Summer Bunting pattern, you will receive an updated version of the new pattern emailed to you automatically as soon as it’s published – should be the beginning of next week.) If you prefer the Hard Copy pattern version, I will have the updated printed copies available in about a week.

I’ve marked both down 25% for the coming week. 🙂

If you’re interested in making this very quilt together with me as your guide, I have a recorded class online at My Girlfriend’s Quilt Shoppe where I talk about everything from choosing fabric, accurate cutting, piecing the blocks, and assembling the quilt.

25 Red White and Blue Projects for the 4th of July

This quilt is a gift for a special friend who loves the 4th of July. I’m hoping it will get used for picnics and watching fireworks.

This would also be a perfect quilt for Quilts of Valor – and this time of year is an especially good one for stocking up on patriotic-themed fabric.

Thank you! I think so too – a chambray is perfect for a summer picnic quilt. White would look dirty a lot faster. 😉
