Are you a scrap lover? Saver? Maker? If you're like most quilters, you accumulate a LOT of fabric scraps. Personally scrap quilts are my very favorite kind of quilt. They make me think of "make-it-do" quilters of the past who were making useful and beautiful items from their leftovers. And making quilts with scraps is almost like making a free quilt, right? Because it's made of the stuff that you could have just thrown away.
By far one of my favorite inspirations when it comes to using scraps beautifully is Amanda Jean Nyberg, aka, Crazy Mom Quilts. I think that Amanda Jean's blog might have been the very first quilt blog I stumbled on (if not one of the first, definitely) and I have been a huge fan ever since. Amanda Jean just has a way with fabric, particularly with scraps. She makes them come alive!
And I'm so excited because Amanda Jean has just published her second book, No Scrap Left Behind. This book is a winner from cover to cover.
It's full of so much colorful, scrappy inspiration and ideas from managing your scraps, to playing with colors and tips for making your colors and fabric choices really work well together, to 'what to do when things aren't working'. Such great info!
Also included are 16 patterns and projects to get your creative juices flowing and to help you use up those scraps you've been collecting.
When Amanda Jean asked if I'd like to be part of a blog tour featuring her book, I (literally) jumped at the chance! I was so excited to see a copy of her book and review it and create something using one of her patterns.
Here is what I made - I used the pattern Subtle to create this monochromatic Irish-Chain made up entirely of 2 ½" x 2 ½" squares. I was loving Amanda Jean's red version (I know I need to make one of those for myself one day), but decided to try for something different and pulled out all of my dark blues.
This was such a fun one for pulling out leftover Jelly Roll strips and putting them to good use. (A bunch of them were the leftover "lights" from my Gumballs quilt I made last spring. It was great to finally give them a cause to work for!)
In addition to all of the helpful information, there are 11 quilt patterns + 4 small project patterns, all using scraps.
I definitely agree that one of the keys to success to managing and using your scraps is to come up with a system that works for you.
My best tips are to sort your scraps by color family. I personally think they're so much more inspiring that way. I also highly recommend a regular purge of your scraps. If there are old things in there that don't inspire you any more, get rid of them. Give them to a friend or a guild who might love the challenge of playing with new-to-them scraps. You can read more about how I like to sort and store scraps here.
You can see and read more about Amanda Jean's quilts on her blog as well as the other stops on the tour. It's always so inspiring to see the variety of things different people do with the same design or pattern.
This book would make a great Mother's Day gift. Just sayin'.
And in more fun news, I have a copy of No Scrap Left Behind to giveaway to one of you! Leave a comment on this post before Tuesday, May 9 at Midnight MST for a chance to win. If you want to tell me your favorite way to corral your scraps. (To comment, click on the little word bubble with a number in it at the top right corner of the post.) Love your quilt! I will soon be organizing my small collection of scraps (motivated by this blog hop) so I can become inspired to use them. Better to organize while my collection is small!
Thanks for the chance for this yummy book!

From what I've seen so far, this book is a must have! Of course I love all the colorful scraps in most if the samples even though I'm tend to make more primitive looking quilts. I think I might becoming a "brights" convert which means more scraps! I'd love a chance to win a copy of the book. Thanks!
Paula Beck
The book looks really nice and a great way to use scraps. I love the Irish-chain themed quilt. I keep all my scraps in a big bin and in the bin are zip lock bags with the different colors. From time to time I reorganize the bags. Thanks!
fgator76
I keep my scraps by color. I stack them on pull out drawers in my sewing cabinets. What fabulous book! A friend just gave me her late mother's scraps when she cleaned up her home.A great way to put them to use.
Aileen Shea
This book looks great! The answer to my scrap invasion! I am guilty of not throwing anything away...providing I can make use of it someday. I collect scraps in a bin or basket & then spend a day or two sorting & cutting them into the biggest useable sizes like squares, rectangles & strips. If I have several pieces from a collection I'll leave them whole & find a baby quilt to use those scraps. I feel accomplished when I can make a quilt top without having to buy more fabric.
Roxanne shank
This Book looks yummy! And so practical. My mother was raised during the depression in the Midwest, and just like her, I can't bear to throw out fabric . So this book would be a godsend. How do I store my fabric scraps? I went to the local RESTORE, – part of Habitat for Humanity – and I picked up a gently used contraption that looks like a large fan and actually is designed to hold socks etc. in various plastic compartments like spokes. The plastic is clear, so it is easy to spin it and select the section you want. It stands on its own vertically on wheels. It is awesome for colour coordinating my tiny scraps - anything less than half a fat quarter. Cheers! R
Teresa@aureaskitchen
I love this quilt. I keep my scraps in a big box, then squares and strips in another one and some treasured scraps in a little basket
holly
I really like the ideas/inspiration that I am getting from a peek of Amanda's new book. I try to sort by color and size. Thanks for the giveaway.
Katherine M Aitken
Always loved scrappy quilts and yours are so pretty. I like to grab a scrap out of the bin without trying to match any fabric.
senorahb
Such a cool book! I love using up my scraps. It makes me feel so much better about my quilt addiction.
Sarah B
Fun! Right now I am sorting scraps by future projects in my mind. Eventually I will have enough to start them!
Carolyn
I've been seeing all the different projects during the hop and it looks like a great book. Sadly, I don't do a good job with my scraps. I have them in some old hatboxes, some clear shoeboxes, the box the little high chair that my daughter's Bitty Baby came in (she's now 22, what does that tell you? LOL) and scattered through my stash. I tried Bonnie Hunter's system and it didn't work well for me. I'm off to read your post to see if it works better!
Vicki H
I keep my scrap strips in plastic shoe boxes by strip size.
Ashley
I keep my scraps together by collection but the bin is overflowing! I would love this book!
pam in illinois
Good morning! That is a beautiful quilt!! Let's just say that I have good intentions when it comes to organizing my scraps. 🙂 Thank you for being on the blog hop. It has been fun. Lots of beautiful projects have been shared. pam
Susan Conner
It's so hard to purge. Eventually I think I will use it, but I have some that will never be used so why not toss them.
annehaun
I keep my scraps in baskets that are separated by colors - it works for me!
April Spolnicki
I love your blue and white Irish Chain! It's gorgeous and it's on the list of quilts I want to make but haven't gotten to yet. One day I will have one similar to yours, hopefully.
Robby H.
This is such a sweet 9-patch. I don't have a lot of scraps (or room to store my sewing stuff) so for now, there are boxes for 'warm', 'cool', and 'neutral', scraps.
Hedy Hahn
Right now I have two large tubs full of scraps. When I have time, I press them and use my GO cutter on them. I love your quilt and the lighter blue scraps sure make this quilt extra gorgeous.
Jennifer
My scraps are in color coded glass jars--the lids are spray painted the matching color.
Dawn F.
Very nice quilt! I sort scraps by size, but all my colors are mixed together because I don't have a lot of space to keep them separate.
Hope Roybal
LOVE that Irish chain quilt! My favorite quilts are modern but scrappy and you nailed it with this one. I am a recycler in all aspects of my life, so scrappy quilts are my choice. I have more scraps than yardage because they make me more creative. I keep my scraps in whatever container suits the size of the scraps and use them for leaders & enders for a vortex quilt.
I follow your blog daily and appreciate all the hard work it must take to keep it up.
Thanks,
Hope
P.S. Your photography is not too shabby either!
Georgia
I always enjoy visiting your blog to see what you're sewing. Love your version of Subtle.
Karen Allen
I used to keep all of my scraps together in one big box but after reading blogs dealing with scrap sorting, I've gone to bins by color. The one thing I hadn't considered until now is that I might want to separate solids from prints. That will be my next sorting project.
Paula
I haven't figured out the best way to store my scraps yet, but I love seeing your work and Amanda Jean's. Thanks for the chance to win her book.
Becky T
Don't you find that control is a bit of a subjective or relative term?
One Persons control may be another persons straight jacket!
Can you tell I have no scrap control. lol
Jan
I love how rich your lights are in the quilt top. I am pleased to meet you on this blog. I have scrolled down a few entries and am feeling inspired. I have recently pulled a lot of old larger florals from my stash and cut them down into strips to be used in scrap nine patches in a garden setting. I am quite excited about working on it. This weekend I am off to a Scrap Magic workshop and pleased to delving into bits and bobs as the memories of earlier quilts surface.
Charlie
Loving the use of scraps and this new book. I have trouble tossing one inch pieces and need a place for them to be used. Any suggestions?
Barbara
Loving all the photos of the book in your post- they make me want to dive in and get started immediately.
I am in England, hoping to win a digital copy of this book - thanks for the chance!
Joelle
I have a small plastic case with drawers into which all my varying size scrap squares are placed without regard to color. My strips are by color in plastic bags. And then there is the bin of unsourced strips-sigh.
Mary Beth
I like the idea of sorting scraps by color. Love the quilt you made.
Chris K.
I love the colors in your quilt.
Alison
I keep the majority of my scraps in the lock top bins designed to hold scrapbook paper! They aren't too deep and I can see into the boxes to know which one I am pulling out. I keep my strings in a gallon sized bag and then have my extra large pieces in a newspaper style bin to encourage me to use my older scraps first!
Bonnie
This book looks great! I'm going to see if my library has it right now (and recommend it for purchase if they don't)!
Anne-Marie
I started off keeping my scraps folded into any remaining yardage, then sorted by color. Then we moved a lot and had kids, so everything got jammed into whatever boxes they fit into. We are currently constructing my sewing room, so hopefully once it's done I can take the time to really sort through my stash and get it organized. (And, hopefully, used!)
Ben
I keep smaller scraps thrown together in a bag; larger pieces are sorted by color on a shelf. Then there are the leftovers from various projects that are still grouped together by project. (My system could definitely use some improvement!)
JoanG
I have separate containers for triangles, squares and 2 1/2 inch strips. But, I also have a huge bag that has all the odd shapes. I love just dumping it out and playing with all the colors and patterns in a quilt. Would love the chance to win this book.
Linda in PA
I have been a fan of Crazy Mom (Amanda) for quite a while. Scrap quilts are my favorite! I cut my scraps into useable sized strips and squares and store them in plastic shoeboxes by size and type. If my sewing room was larger and had more storage options, they would also be separated by color.
LynneP
I have been collecting scraps for 25+ years and separate them by color. It is so much fun to dive into scraps for a variety of uses. Lately, I have been making monochromatic improv "slabs" which are currently pinned to my design wall awaiting inspiration.
Thanks for the chance to win this book!
Nancy
What a nice book! I sort my scraps by color, as did my quilter Mom, from whom I inherited a rooomful of scraps. I'm slowly going thru her fabrics and saving my favorites and giving the rest to my local guild.
Susan West
I keep scraps together from each project I've finished. I'm going to start sorting by color from now on. Thanks for the tip.
Jill L
I sort my scraps by size/shape eg. 2" x 2" squares and strips, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares and strips, 3" and 4". Then they are ready for whatever project I find or dream up.
Gina M
Lovely quilt! I attempt to sort my scraps by color and size in colored scrap-fabric baskets...but when I'm working they mostly end up in a big pile on my worktop!
Tracey
This looks like a great book! I basically cut my smaller pieces of fabric into 2.5 inch squares and then these get cut into triangles for a scrappy pinwheel quilt. That'll be years in the making!! And my yardage of 8 inches or less get cut into various width on strips which will be made into a string quilt some year. So far I've just been collecting strings and I'm sure that I have enough to make 3 big quilts. Its time to get started on one! Thanks for your blog and this chance.
Dianne
Any scrap less than 1.5 inches I put in a pretty basket to save for a crazy quilt. The rest I cut into 5 inch, 2.5 inch, 3 inch and 2 inch blocks or strips depending on the original size. Love her books.
Lynda H
I have built no corrals and my scraps are stampeding into my living space. I have a bin of selveges, a bin of batiks, a very large bag of strips and containers of "stuff" I have never made a scrap quilt - it is hard for me not to plan.
Lisa Marie
I like to use scraps to make monochromatic wonky log cabin blocks. I keep bags of scraps sorted by color so I can just pull out a bag and make some blocks in a hurry. I'll make a few blocks here and there and eventually I have enough for a good start on a quilt. I've made rainbow quilts with these log cabin blocks in many different arrangements.
Twyla Starr
I love the new book and your quilt. I collect my scraps in one really big shopping bag with handles and have just begun to separate some scraps into clear plastic shoe boxes cut down to different sizes. Thanks so much for the opportunity to win a book.
Lauren Spence
I save all my currently being worked on scraps in a bowl and then transfer them to a big ole box when I'm done. Sorting by color will have to be the next step.
Christine Christoffersen
I love Irish Chain quilts they used to be my all time go to. Then I got out of the box. But never thought about that pattern for scraps! So dang cute! I have my scraps sorted by color recently and put in little garbage bags. Then I decided to switch gears and cut them all up bag by bag so they are in usable sizes. So when I get in the scrap mood I can just sew on. Well I just finished my Scrappy Purse. The hardest part was placing two pieces of fabrics together that I don't think match. It got easier and now that the purse is done. I am ready to take on the rest of the scrap pile. I have Sunday Morning quilts. Love that book. I have a few other things to finish up and I am going to dive into a full scrappy pineapple quilt unless I win a book and that might change???
Dawn
I have scraps from when I first starting quilting about 25 years ago. I do want to get rid of them but would not want to throw they away. If anyone who reads this has a suggestion of how to donate them, please let me know. dmaylorATcomcastDOTnet
artisticsharon
I'm not a big irish chain fan but this one really caught my eye being monochromatic. I don't have any great tips for scraps...I've got them shoved into a few fabric baskets I made, not very easy to use that way 🙁
Norma
I sort my scraps by size -- 2", 2.5" strips, squares, crumbs, and strings. I really need to get some quilts made from my scraps soon as they are starting to take over my studio!
Deb E / Oregon
I've quilted for 40+ years, so my scraps are what I sew with most of the time right now, and I use my yardage for borders, backings, etc. All are cut, and arranged by size in plastic drawers, and I simply pull that size scraps out to sew up another quilt. Makes it easy to get a lot of quilting done quickly. I periodically will buy someone elses scraps at yard sales, quilt shows, etc., to add new life to my scraps. I would LOVE to win this book - more ideas are always needed! I give away 95% of my quilts & I quilt a lot. Thanks for the chance to win.... Deb E / Oregon
Sharon Hendrix
My scraps are sorted by colors. Love the book, it wil be well used, can't wait to make projects from it.
Catholic Bibliophagist
I sort my scraps by color into plastic drawers which are stacked under my cutting table.
Deb
I store my scraps by color in various sizes of tubs that are clear and also labeled. I enjoy saving and using scraps. 😀
Anita
I love your Irish Chain quilt!
I try to sort my scraps by color and size.
Linda F.
What a terrific book for using my beloved scraps! I sort them by color in labeled bins. Of course I can't shut the lid on some of the bins...
Chris @ The Art of Making Blog
I initially throw all of my scraps into a basket. As it gets full, I go through and cut down the odd-shaped pieces - usually into blocks or strips that are stored in boxes. The excess from trimming the pieces goes into a bag for friends who like tiny pieces or to be used for stuffing.
Peggy
I have random sized scraps in a bin, 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 inch squares are in a container, but that's about it. Not terribly organized - one day!!
Mary D
I keep most of my scraps sorted by color in big rectangular containers. The smaller pieces have been sorted off and put in a bag and the larger ones are folded and stood on end in the box so I can see them.
I love your blue version - it just begs to wrap someone up.
Kathy E.
I wish I could tell you that I have a system for organizing my scraps, but I don't. The best I can do right now is toss them into a basket and let them mingle and ferment together! I would love to have this book...perfect for me!
Becca
I try to keep mine organized by color, but I'm not sure how well it's really working for me, just judging by the sheer volume and the fact that they are not getting any smaller. I'm currently working on two scrap projects, one sampler and one from Scraps, Inc. Vol 2, and for the sampler, I pulled out all the scraps in the colors that I wanted to use and put them in a different bin so I can pull right from there when I make a block. I've made 36 blocks and my bin is still overflowing, lol!
Janette
Scrappy quilts are the best quilts to make in my opinion. To use up fabric that you did not know what to do with gives me a great sense of satisfaction.
Kristi
I have scraps sorted by color and stuffed into plastic bags. Not ideal but it sort of works for me! I love your quilt and am excited to buy Amanda Jean's book!
Cherie
As it happens I started on a sort and purge of my stash this week. About 1/3 complete but I'm getting there.
Sharon T
I love love scraps! But I am terrible at managing them. I keep the bigger hunks flat in a large container and strips are together...but the small ones are impossible!
Patti Kilcullen
I agree with you about Amanda Jean, I love her blog, I have her last book, I even made a crochet rug out of scraps for my bathroom. She is a scrap genius.
Joyce Carter
Your quilt is so beautiful. I love the blue and white you used and the Iris Chain is one of my favorite patterns. Thank you for sharing and the giveaway.
The best way for me to sort my scraps is to place the largest pieces in a large separate container. Then I cut the smaller pieces into squares from 11/2 inches up to 5 inches and strips into however they come out. These are stored into clear see-through containers according to their size.
Sandra B
Love your quilt, Amy! The blues with the low volume fabrics result in an awesome look! I store my scraps in clear plastic bins...it works well for me....Amanda Jean's new book has some great projects...my favorite quilts are ones that use simple shapes, and the quilts in No Scrap Left Behind seem to fall in that category.... Thanks for giving one of your blog readers a chance to win a copy of the book!!
Debbie Miller
I separate my scraps only by prints and solids. I keep them in baskets and when it gets too full, I pick either a small block project or an English Paper piecing shape and start making those until I empty the scrap basket. I have one long term project for my special scraps of a 6 1/2 inch crazy pieced block. I want to make a king sized quilt of them only.
Teri
No fancy system here. I keep a fabric shopping bag by my cutting table. When it is stuffed full I know it's time to donate to the Senior Center or make a quilt. I have made 2 scrap vortex quilts (Crazy Mom Quilts) and numerous other scrappy projects. Somehow, I still have a full bag???
Dee
Enjoying the blog hop with all the variations for Amanda's book. I'm anxious to dive in myself! I have a catch-all bin for scraps as I work on a project, which I periodically trim into the largest strips possible and work my way down the piece for useable sizes. Thanks for the opportunity to win a book. Love your blog!
Linda S
No real scrap system for me. however, right now my scraps are all sorted by color. I have a couple of scrappy rainbow quilts in the planning stage right now.

I just started quilting last year, so not too many scarps-larger pieces kept in see-thru lidded bins-smaller scraps in zip-lock storage bags! Works for me! Thank you, Susan
Megan
I love your take on the quilt! The blues are beautiful!
deebriese
I cut them as I go and I only have a light and dark bin....deebriese@yahoo.com
Deb
I try to sort by color. I keep my unsorted scrap bin by my cutting table. The other day one of my dogs became impatient with me and buried her head in the bin and began sorting fabric all over the place! I couldn't help but laugh and it did remind me it's time for me to sort those scraps!
Rose
I typically keep a shoebox each of 2.5" & 5" squares and a box of strings. When it's full, I make a quilt! I think this quilt may have to be made from that 2.5" box!
Christine
I'm a newbie to quilting so I don't have a scrap problem, yet. All mine are in 1 small tub. Thank you and Amanda Jean for the chance to win.
katelijn lecluyse
Hello, I sort my scraps bij colour in plastic boxes, and there are many bags with scraps ready to sort,
scraps are great for making charity quilts,
katelijn
Pam dempsey
I try to sort by color and size ?
Emilee
I ❤ your blue version!!! (I have been into blue a lot lately!!) I organize my scraps by size (for specific sizes) and by color for the rest! Thanks for a chance to win the book!
kathleenbenitez
I have my scraps in big plastic bins. But since pulling one of them down to root through it gave me a black eye last week, I might have to rethink.
Sandy
I have been hoarding scraps for several years and Amanda Jean is the one who inspired me to sort them! I have a few plastic drawer towers that I toss my scraps into based on color value ( light, medium, and dark). Now it's time to go a step further and sort by color. Thanks for pointing out that it's ok to purge those scraps that are less inspiring! Love your blue version of this quilt!?
Margaret N
my favorite color is blue and i enjoy resting my eyes on your quilt. I keep my scraps sorted by size. I use pieces down to 1 1/2" and sort those into baggies by fabric. I've finished an irish chain, a triple irish chain, mini trips around the world and a granny squares quilt just in the last year. Scraps are my best medium.
Shauna T
I love your version, the blues look so good. I am horrible with scraps, mostly they go in a tub by color, if they are of a decent size, everything else is stuffed into plastic bags. My goal is to make a couple of dog beds with the tiny scraps.
Suzi in MI
So far I just toss my scraps in one bin. But they need to be pretty small before I consider them scraps.
Judyk
Love your version of subtle. I use a mix of methods--some scraps are by size and some are by style of fabric.
Penelope
I love your quilt. Thank you for your inspiration
Lola
I've tried a few times to make a scrappy quilt, but I never seem to get the color values quite right. This book looks like a godsend for me. My scrap bins also include a number of projects that never got going....
Laura
I corral my scraps (mostly) in clear plastic shoebox containers, sorted by color. And I may have wayward scraps elsewhere in my sewing room as well. 😉
momi_machts
I am a new quilter but till now it worked for me in the way, that I use my scrapps to match my quilts - backing, pillow case. And I do not have many colors, as I love green. So till now it was very easy. The rest I sort from colors and form.
Linda Hayes
My scraps get tossed in a basket, when it's full, I have a "cutting party" and cut them into usable sized pieces.
paula
I separate my scraps by color. One plastic bin for each color. Triangles apart, eyeballing size.
Kelly Paulson
Your quilt is so lovely! I think I need this book. My scraps are contained in four drawers: one for whites, one for reds/oranges/yellows/pinks, one for blues/greens/purples, and one for blacks/grays. It works, though I'd like to get better at cutting them before storing them.
jeanmarey
My scraps are all in a big bin together. Someday I would like to separate them by color and size, but that day hasn't happened yet....
Debbie
I don't sort my scraps by colour, but I might get there! I'd also want to keep my solid scraps separate from the prints. Right now, I just sort by size, but I don't have many scraps yet.
Amy A
I'm still new at this quilting thing and so mine are in a tote. All mixed together. Love the blues but I like the red one too. Beautiful work.
Stephanie Carter
I am drowning in scraps, would love a copy of this wonderful book! Thanks for the chance!
Sharon
I'm not too organized when it comes to scraps. This book looks very inspiring and I would love to win a copy! Thanks.
Christina M
I become overwhelmed by scraps! I need to come up with a method of storing them that actually inspires me to use them. Sorting them by color seems like a great idea--now to put aside my WIPs to do it!
Jean Burke
Beautiful - love the blues. I keep my scraps in baskets - hope fully sorted by color!!! This book looks wonderful. I have her first one and have made two quilts from it. Thanks for this opportunity. Enjoy your blue beauty!
Janice Cate
I love this scrappy Irish chain idea. I have been trying to use up my dark blue scraps. This may be the one!
Chris
Honestly I don't sort anything more then light and dark. That's it. Works for me.
Sarah Scott
Love your quilt! I will soon be organizing my small collection of scraps (motivated by this blog hop) so I can become inspired to use them. Better to organize while my collection is small!
Thanks for the chance for this yummy book!
Jeanne
I love your blue Subtle quilt. I store my scraps by color. I like your idea of purging periodically. I finally did that last summer. Since I make donation quilts, I didn't gift the fabric. I just made quilts using it - 23 quilts to be exact. I used the fabric that no longer excited me along with the small scraps that just needed to be cleaned out.
Jocelyn
I do try to sort my scraps by color. It helps when I need to find a little something. Love these quilts. Amanda Jean is a genius when it comes to corralling scraps.
Christine Weld
My scraps are more of the free range variety than corralled. Ha! But I enjoy digging through my box of scrappy goodness and seeing what I can find!
Heidi F
I sort mine by color. But I keep a mixed bin under my sewing table too. I love your version of the quilt with the blues.
Anne
I find that sorting by major color group (red, orange/yellow, blue, green, etc.) works best for me. I use plastic tubs and find that it's very helpful when I'm in a bit of a hurry (or excited to get started on a new project) to be able to grab a bin of color and start planning.
Carol C
Corral scraps? Obviously I need some scrap management and if corralling works I'll try it. Heaven knows nothing has worked for me yet but maybe it's a lack of commitment. All of my quilts are very scrappy so it would really increase my productivity if I were better organized. Perhaps tomorrow......
quiltytherapy
Loving the dark blue version. I like my scraps by size instead of color. Having squares in 5", 3", 2.5", 2 and 1.5" means I'm more likely to use them in a project.
Allison in Alabama
These quilts are gorgeous - i love that mini nines one - so adorable!!! Thanks for sharing! (Scraps - they just take over the room....I'm helpless!!! 🙂 )
Elena Battles
I sort my scraps by color in small Sterilite boxes. I am using them much more frequently now!
Annette Orona
As a newbie quilter I am just beginning to sort scraps by color in plastic bins. Let's see how it goes!
Roseline McIntosh
hello from Canada, i just commented on Amanda Jean's blog i was tipsy toward blues and voila , your creation pops up!! Lovely.
I sort by similar colour , and a big bin for my "what was i thinking fabrics"
Shirley J B
I try to organize by color in bins but my stash in reality is a mess...
Your quilt is awesome!!
Karen E
I'd love a copy of this book. I have tons of scraps. I pretty much keep them sorted by size, a la Lori Holt method. I cut up into largest usable size, then sort by size/shade.
Jeanine
I don't sort my scraps by color, but by size. I cut squares and strips and keep them together by size. Love your quilt. I, too, enjoy Amanda Jean's blog and all her wonderful projects.
Jenny
thanks! I keep mine by color. I wait until I can no longer get the top of most of the containers, then I pull scraps for a scrap quilt. Love to get some ideas from Amanda Jean's book. 🙂
Janet
I love scrap quilts so I save almost all of my scraps and keep them sorted by color in plastic shoeboxes. I want to make every quilt I see from Amanda Jean's books!
Jayne P
My scraps are in one big jumble but maybe now is the time to start sorting
Mary B in TX
I'm still looking for inspiration for storing, and using my scrapes! This book looks like it fits the bill. thanks
Peggy
I cut my scraps into 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 inch strips, which I first heard about on Bonnie Hunter's website. I find that a lot of quilts that I choose to make can be made using these widths, even if it's not one of her patterns. Then I color sort them within the different sizes. It has made making scrap quilts so much easier and enjoyable to me. I am loving the projects in this book when I see them pop up on Instagram.
Lisa
Scraps are a real challenge for me but since every quilt results in precious fabric scraps I'm looking for the best way to work with them!
B.
I sort scraps by size, and sort of sub sort them further by color.
Emily K
What a fun looking book! I do not have a good system for organizing scraps (they're all in a little fabric basket right now). So this would definitely come in handy for figuring out what would work! Maybe I need to start cutting them into 2.5" or 5" squares just to have on hand!
Barbara
I put all my scraps into plastic bins, sorted by color. When a bin gets too full, I start cutting the scraps into strips or squares to use in scrap Quilts.
suzanprincess
I was sorting by size, but am switching to sorting by color, except for the random width strips I plan to use for either strip or slab blocks.
Anne
Lovely colour choices.
Rhonda Desgranges
What a great book! I sort my scraps in small plastic bins. I sort them by type of fabric: 1930s, civil war, modern, etc. My
very small crumbs are kept in old blue mason jars. Thanks for the chance to win!
Gretchen
I love your blue quilt. Blue quilts are my favorites. I would love to win this book, thanks for the opportunity.
DebrafromMD
Love the designs in this book. Most of my scraps are stuffed into plastic bins. I am trying to get them cut up into usable pieces, but the process is slow going. I have a lot of scraps.
Julia
My scraps are sorted in IKEA boxes by colors and volume. I love me some scraps!
April Bringhurst
I am still trying to figure it out. I don't have a ton of scraps....yet. For now they are all together in a big bag.
Joan
I make almost exclusively scrap quilts. I keep them in plastic shoe boxes by color (there are several that share a box, too, if I'm low on those). It is easy to find pieces by color for a quilt. I put pieces that are >1/2 yard on comic book cardboards.
Linda Johnson
I follow both of you and savor each post. I "organize" my scraps in strips and blocks of various sizes. however, I don't organize in color groups so it's always a challenge to find both the size and color I need. I'm going to fix that and re-organize by color within the various sizes. Thanks for the encouragement.
Kathy Porter-Cunningham
I love any Irish Chain Quilt. Would work with any colour, but I am also partial to red.
janequiltsslowly
I am more of a "throw them all in one box" scrap collector, but I do use my scraps. I got in the habit of using them as "leader-enders" in between piecing that I am doing for other projects. I was inspired by Amanda Jean's scrap vortex quilt and have made a bunch of slabs from scraps. I have made them all 10" in one dimension so I hope they will be easy to piece together into a quilt.
Julie Dunn
My scraps have taken over my sewing room! I am trying to work on scrap quilts in between my other quilts just to try to get a handle on them. I really love to sew with leaders and enders, so that is when I do my scrappy sewing. 2 quilts for 1!
Leslie
WOW, Organized scraps? What a concept! ? Maybe I will wade into them someday.....hoping I could make something as gorgeous as you have!
Joanna Wells
I'm so new to quilting, I don't have many scraps to sort! But I think the color-coding idea makes the most sense. I love looking at all of the beautiful quilts and hope to post some of my own someday soon!
Susan L.
Great book! I have a couple of ways to store my scraps. Most of the time I throw them into a wicker basket I keep by my cutting table. When I have time, or am so inclined, which sadly isn't often, I sort them by color in bins.
di
LOVE! of scraps is what go me in to this quilting fix to begin with! many years ago! I just had the strongest desire to sew with scraps, so much so, that I ashamedly ask other people if I could look through their scraps! Now I want others to come "look" through my scraps! Thanks for the chance to win and for your beautiful quilt!

Your colourway of this quilt looks great too. So much scope with this book. I use a combination of plastic containers and boxes. I'm a little obsessive wth scraps. Lol. Thanks for the chance to win an e book. I live in New Zealand.
Sue
This book looks like so much fun. A lovely variety.
Thanks for the chance to win one.
M Murphy
I need a better scrap sort system! I'm currently using a combination of clear. containers, photboxes, and big ziplock bags. I have reserved "no scraps left behind" at the library. However there are 57 others ahead of me! Sure hope I WIN!
roxsew
I love this quilt and the book! Here's hoping a win a copy! I've entered every day. I love the idea that I can use the little bits of my precious fabric and make something wonderful all by itself! I've made pin cushions, mug rugs, and pillow tops with scraps. I'm ready to try a quilt soon!
The Joyful Quilter
My favorite way to corral my scraps is in fabric baskets... made with SCRAPS, of course!!
Pat T.
Oh! Amy! What a wonderful quilt!!
Amanda Jean's book and your version of the Irish chain have me imagining possibilities with my scraps!
(I have not done an Irish chain yet!... Now, I have to!!)
I love my scraps, and save *everything*!.... (Pieces really too small for me to use go into a bag with scraps and trimmings of batting, to be used in pet shelter beds and quilt pads.)
I don't have a labor intensive scrap-keeping system (pre-cutting them really didn't work for me)... I keep larger pieces tucked in with my matching yardage, and smaller/other scraps are sorted by fabric type, style, color, designer... in clear plastic project boxes.
(... Perhaps not the best, but workable for me...)
Pat T.
Kylie C
I keep my scraps in lots of shoe boxes. No organisation whatsoever! But I enjoy fishing through them looking for the right piece. I have nearly finished a blue and white quilt with 2.5 inch squares but now wish I'd had Amanda Jeans layout! I'll have to make another one!
Mom C
I have 6 drawers that I sort my scraps in. Blues and greens have their own drawers but the other colors have to double up. When a drawer gets too full to shut, I make something scrappy. The last 5 quilts have all been scrappy, I love to use up all my fabric and it is like getting a free quilt to me too. Love the blue. Thanks.
Jennifer C
Such a neat book and a lovely quilt! I don't have a great system for scraps yet. They end up in a bin with a lid at the moment, but I sometimes forget about them and then wish later I had gotten them out! Whoops. ?
Diane Beavers
Amy,
What a beautiful monochromatic scrappy quilt~ your dark blues just come alive.
I'm soaking up alot of ideas from this blog tour, so no tips. I have begun to seperate my scraps by color family...and craft /quilt some fabric bins to store those. Thank you for sharing!
Paula
My scraps are in a giant tub, a real mess!
Linda
my scraps are in a big box. one big colorful jumble. I like them that way. sometimes I find some things that work well together by accident! Love your blues 🙂
Mel J.
I love your quilt in the blue colorway! I am one that has not quite yet figured out how to organize my scraps (I'm still fairly new to the game of quilting 🙂 ). I am hoping that this book will be a good place to start and get some great inspiration into using said scraps - thanks for giving us a chance to win this book.
Nancy
I have take the time to corral my scraps by cutting them into useful sized squares and strips. Very convenient way to keep them ready for use! Thanks for sharing an awesome giveaway!
Tammie
I have little baskets for my scraps and I sort them by size and I cut them into 2.5 or 5 inch squares or 2.5 inch strips.
Betsy
Amy I use my scraps to make baby donation quilts but I have no system. I just throthem all in a bin
Emma Somero
I have yet to learn how to manage my scraps, but would love (or need) to learn. I too am a fan of scrap quilts ... and once you become a quilter the scraps begin to take over like an infectious disease! I would love to win a copy of this book, thanks for offering this giveaway to one lucky winner!
Kerry
your blue quilt top has masculine charm, which is often hard to find. As for scraps I tend to leave them rolled up in the largest piece of that fabric that I have left, not a very good system but that way I avoid having to do anything with them. - sneakys best 🙂
Michelle M
I haven't figured out a good system. Scraps have several different random homes, but no organization. Thanks for the chance to win the book!
Joan Jordan
I use clear, plastic shoe boxes with hinged lids for my scraps. The lids don't get left off since they're attached, and I can see what color scraps are inside.
Diane Oakes
Most of my scraps are sorted by size and color. I started by following Bonnie Hunter's system and have made small changes for my personal preferences. Really like your quilt. Thanks for sharing!!
Susie
I am not very good at sorting scraps. I kind of gather all of the small pieces after a project is done, and keep them in a zip lock bag.
Margaret Carmichael
I just stumbled on your sit and I love your sense of humor! You have some great ideas and being a fairly new quilter, I'm sure I can learn a lot from you!! I buy the picture keeper boxes from Michaels or Joann when their on sale and label the boxes to reflect what colors the scraps are inside 🙂
Karen McMahon
I sort by size but I am wondering if I should start sorting by color or style. I can see what you mean about it being more inspiring.
Janet T
Most of my scraps are bigger, so I fold them with the larger piece of fabric leftover from a quilt. I have a few that are small that I put in a ziploc bag. and use for appliques..
Lorene holbrook
Aren't scraps amazing? I too try and cut up scraps as I generate them. I sort by size. Not color. I love scrappy quilts. I also love 2 color quilts. But I find it easy to pick those out if I need to. I love your quilt. So very interesting. Do much movement. Thanks for the chance!
Mary Hughes
I cut my scraps into 2 &21/2 sq and bag them so they are ready for whatever's
Manon J
First time in my quilting life, I just went to my svraps last month and cut and sort eveything by color!
That book would be the perfect addition to my stash of scraps!
Erika W
By color in plastic drawers!
jennifer
I'd love to win a copy of this book! thanks for the chance! I sort my fabric scraps by color, too. I agree that they're so much more inspiring that way...
Carol L
I am enjoying the comments about how to organize my scraps because I don't have a clue. And I love the quilts from the book. What beautiful ways to use fabric I already have. Love it. Thank you for sharing it.
Joan M
Beautiful quilt! I keep my scraps in colour co-ordinated fabric baskets. Love the scrappy look in quilts! Thank you for the generous giveaway and the chance to win.
Susan
I have only been quilting less than a year, so my scrapes are few, but the ones I do have I keep in individual bags by color in a bin in my cupboard. I have used some of them to make sample blocks of new patterns so I can see how they look in person, not just a picture. Eventually I will have enough of them to make a "sample" quilt.
Sarah@123quilt
I love to sort scraps by color! Thanks for the chance to win!
Tammy
I keep my scraps in a filing cabinet by colors. It makes it easier to find what you are looking for. I love the blue quilt!
Jeanne Shook
Great book to win! I sort scraps by color.
Helen B
Love the look of the scrappy quilts. Haven't actually tried one but these look so great, I might have to try! Thanks for the chance to win.
Linda
I love your Irish Chain. It's always fun to see how other quilters use up their scraps. Thanks for the giveaway
Sharon
Love your quilt. I store my scraps in bins by size
Wendy Close
Sort by color except for my solids. Thanks for this opportunity. Wendy
Kay Hunzinger
I especially love her "bruiser" quilt. Would love to win a copy of the book, No Scrap Left Behind. Kay H
Melissa Messinger
I have been sorting my scraps the Amanda Jean way ever since I read Sunday Morning Quilts. It works fabulously for me! Can't wait to get my hands on the new book!
Barbara Forde
Rubbermaid storage bins, cardboard file boxes, baskets.....a little bit of everything...not very organized at all 🙂
Joy P
I love Amanda Jean's book! And your version of Subtle - the background fabric look great with the dark blue. My scrap system is to kinda sorta separate scraps by size in shopping bags. Not very efficient.
Jani
Like yours, mine are in bins by color. Would love to start using more of them!
Maxine shaw
I love your quilt equally as much as the one in the book. Again the low volume scrapiness of the background is so appealing and has such a vintige feel... which I love
Mary D
I am a scrapper lover at heart. And scraps just keep growing no matter what you do with them. I have them cut into sizes, in bags by color, in containers by size, in drawers by intended projects, in large zip bags. I have them everywhere. I enjoyed seeing the inspiration from this blog hop.

Carla schattle
Love the blue quilt! So pretty. I'm a new quilter so haven't figured out a scrap system yet. I do love scrappy quilts. Thanks for the chance to win! Schattle@sbcglobal.net
Marcia B
I LOVE scrappy quilts and use my scraps every opportunity I can! Just wish I could sew faster so I could decrease my piles of scraps!
I do organize my scraps by color and size. Plastic tubs with lids work well for me since you can stack these containers!
I really love the subtle blues used in your quilt! Both the red AND the blue quilt versions are attractive! That Amanda sure has a knack for using her scraps in an appealing manner! Can't wait to get my hands on her second book!!! 🙂
Karen Seitz
My dad surprised me with a copy of this book right when it came out (I had mentioned that I was looking forward to its release), so I am already a winner! One scrap tip I like to share is that I keep my smallish, oddly shaped scraps in a bin to use for English paper piecing.
Cathy Calloway
I love scrappy quilts. This looks like a great book. I'm in love ❤️ with the Irish chain for sure. Thanks for the chance
Trisha
My scraps are in one container. I need to sort them.
Judy Stone
I like your idea of going through my scraps and giving those away that no longer speak to me. Good idea since there are some I think someone else put in there - I couldn't have collected all those scraps!!! LOL Thank you for the chance to win this amazing book. Your blue quilt is lovely!!!
Judy B
Love your dark blue version of Subtle. As for my way corralling my scraps, I am a basket kind of girl. I use some twig baskets that were a gift years ago, I use a handmade woven basket from my sister-in-law, I have fabric baskets made my friends and even a retired Easter basket from when my kids were little ( many years ago). Not only do I keep scraps, it seems I keep baskets and buckets!!!:)
Carol
I would love this book! I have not figured out the best way for sorting scraps, but I have certainly tried! I have a basket on my sewing table that I throw scraps into...then I sort them later-- mostly by type (strips, squares, and bits and pieces.
Patricia Ludwiczak
Love your quilt - and in my favorite color! I have my fabrics sorted by colors. I have a separate bin for batiks and one for reproductions. Too much fabric in every one of them!
Cassy Day
My guild has a fun tradition at our annual quilt show. We all contriribute scraps (of all sizes) and fill a baby crib. Show attendees can sort through the scraps and fill a gallon-sized bag for $1. It's a great way to get rid of some scraps, find some great new ones and make a little money for the guild.
Maureen Mangrum
Lovely post and book!! I sort mine by size and color in clear tubs so they are easy to grab!
Nicole Sender
I try to keep my scraps organized in plastic shoe boxes and plastic ice cream buckets. I try to keep prints and solids separated. Of course, I still have piles of scraps sitting around waiting for me to sort.
Sally Christiansen
This book looks wonderful! I throw small scraps in a bin and try to then purge and sort by size when it is overflowing.
Liz Hartrich
I love the dark blue Irish chain! I have just be piling up my scraps in plastic boxes and one large old crock. I haven't sorted them out, except to pull out the jelly roll strips in one bin. So much sorting to do before I could take on this quilt, but looks like it'd be worth it.
quiltingmod
These projects are such a beautiful way to manage scraps.
Shelley B.
I loved her first book, Sunday Morning Quilts, so I'm sure this one is a winner - everyone has scraps and extra help and ideas putting them together into a bonus quilt is perfect! Love your blog and ideas, too Amy!
Karen Thurn
I definitely need to get this book. My scrap organization method consists of opening a plastic grocery bag and inserting the scraps and then I hide the bags; under the ironing board, under the sewing machine (it's surprising how much room there is and what good insulation they provide), in the closet, on the shelves, and in the washing machine and dryer (this place is a bit annoying as it causes me to waste time taking them in and out while the machines are used for actually doing laundry). kthurn@bektel.com
Janet
I keep 2.5" squares and strips then my other scraps are sorted by color. Love making scrappy quilts! Thanks for the opportunity!
Dawn Martinez
I'm in the process of moving my studio to another room, so I'm still hashing out the most efficient way to store fabrics, wools, yarns, etc. scraps will be a big part of the plan lol!
Hannah W
your quilt in blue is, to my eye, lovelier than the one in the book. thanks for the inspiration!
Rowena Kerber
I have never made an Irish chain quilt--it just was never a pattern I particularly liked. However the moment I saw the scrappy one I was in love! I sort my scraps by color, finding this method convenient for applique and scrap quilting.
Lisa Newton

I am new too quilting so don't have a lot of scraps. Love the look of scrap quilts
travelingro
I am a scrapaholic or a scrap-fanatic. I love the quilts that are scrappy. I love your quilt, btw. I cut my smaller scraps into 1-1/2" to 2-1/2", 3-1/2" on up to 6-1/2" squares... I cut strips 2-1/2" wide ... as a rule. Large pieces I sort by color. Do a lot of applique. I need/want my scraps. They make such happy quilts. Thank you for sharing. Oh, and I keep my triangle scraps.
Betty van Os
Hi Amy, love your quilt! My scraps are in two baskets, still unsorted. So I'm heading over to you page for tips right now. Thanks
A.J.M. ouwman
I just have a big bin for my scraps, i sort out the color I need if I make a quilt using the scraps. Maybe not efficient but it works for me.
kaholly
Your blue version came out lovely! I've been working with lots of blue the last few days and although it's not my favorite color, it's been fun. This book is on my wish list! I was thinking Mother's Day!
June @ QuiltQuest
Very pretty interpretation of the quilt! I usually store my strips on hangers by color. I have other pieces either in wire Elfa drawers or in boxes. It's hard to manage them, but I do prefer quilts made of scraps. Would enjoy and would use this book. Thanks for the chance!
Sharon D
I love your quilt. I keep large scraps in clear shoe box size bins by color. Smaller pieces I keep in a large back and use for strings and other scrap quilts.
Stephanie
My scraps are all over the house and garage. I need lots of help keeping track of them all.
Leonie
I mainly sort by size as I love making hexigons with the small pieces. Anything really small makes good filling when needed.
Staci
Right now I'm using a rolling cart with drawers to organize my scraps. Thanks for the giveaway
Eileen Maher
I have separated my scraps by colors. The blue quilt is really pretty, I made a scrappy Irish chain a few years ago, but in one color it's great.
Terri Benedict
I am pretty new to quilting and haven't built up a stash at all. So far I have just been throwing them all in a plastic tub.
Rosemary
I have recently sorted my scraps by color, and placed them in plastic shoe boxes. Seems to work well...at least it seems better than having them all in a larger container! I have a basket that I throw scraps in as I am cutting and sewing, and then when I get a chance I sort them. I keep all the polka dot scraps together...not sure why, but I like it that way! Love scrap quilts!!
KT
Looks like a great book! I have several scrap projects in the works, so I cut my scraps down to the sizes I need and put them in the appropriate project box. I store the rest of my scraps by size.
Gigi Voegeli
I sort by color mostly. I often keep scraps from the same quilt together in a pile if they are particularly suited to each other and because sometimes I like to use them together again. Thanks for the chance to win a book!
Aileen Kline
I love your version of subtle. I have scraps sorted by color. I have not had time since October to cut them down to the Bonnie Hunter Scrap system. That is my goal for June.

Lori J Smith
Your blue & white quilt is beautiful! I usually sort my scraps by size, I cut most of them into 2 or 2.5 inch squares to be used when needed. I am currently working on a string quilt, because I have so many of them. Thanks for a chance to win Amanda Jean's book.
Susan Smith
Love your blue and white version! I sort my scraps by color and have found that the best way to keep them under control it to USE THEM!! I tend to have MANY quilt projects going at one time and I always like to have one of those be a scrappy project. It might take me a year or two to finish it but I work on it along the way, here and there.
Pam Johnson
I'm new to quilting so I only have a smallish amount of scraps- that are residing in ziplock bags . This book is stunning!
mskhofhinn
Ooh, I love your version of this quilt - it's so great to see the different feel you get with a different color palette. I mostly sort by color but also keep really small triangle scraps (like leftovers from flying geese/snowball blocks) by themselves so I can use as leader/ender projects. Thanks for the giveaway!
Carla moss
I vowed only to have one project on the go at once..... currently have five.
I vowed to never to have a stash....got one of those.
I vowed to keep scraps to a bare minimum...... they are starting to take over.
Do you know why .....in the last four years I have fallen in love with quilting.
I would love some scrappy inspiration xx
Margaret Melachrinos
I made one of your modern Christmas tree quilts using many scraps left over from other projects. I have not quilted it yet but found it to be so much fun!! I especially liked just pulling from scraps or stash to make the quilt. I have been separating my scraps by color although I leave Christmas ones together.
Diane
I can't wait to get my hands on this book! I've got lots of scraps & I'm ready to start cutting them:). Thank you for the chance!
Cindy
I've never made a scrappy quilt but now have a lot of scraps that are sorted by color. I would love to try using some of them to try one of the neat patterns in this book, Thanks for the chance
nicole
Well, I try to organize my stash by color and keep it that way. I have been working on a string quilt over the last year as a filler project, so I am getting very good at putting my strings in the special bin.
Linda
I have been trying to sort using Bonnie Hunter's idea of sizes and strips. I keep my bigger scraps sorted by color. Wish I had more room to separate every color into it's own bin on shelves.
Cathy B.
Must confess I still have a hard time actually cutting into my scraps. But I have recently organized by color into clear shoe boxes so I can better see what I have. Book looks great!
Phoebe Ingraham
Your quilt is beautiful! I am loving navy fabrics right now. Your dark blues work so well in this design. Currently, I am keeping my smaller scraps by color, but my larger scraps are the issue in my sewing room! I think I'll start cutting them into uniform sizes: charms, 2.5 inch strips, larger squares. I think that might help inspire me to use those larger pieces. Thanks for sharing your version of this lovely quilt!
Aimee
I love your version in dark blues! I'm starting to accumulate 2 & 2.5" scraps, but I was overwhelmed at the idea of making a whole quilt from them. Yours & Amanda Jean's are very inspiring. Thanks for the chance to win the book!
Inez Fay Hulsey
I love both colorways of that quilt . Thank you for suggestions of sorting scraps .
Tary B.
I love this book! Such creative use of scraps. I sort mine by color into plastic bins. I am the one who takes scraps from my quilting friends and use them to make all sorts of projects.
Pat D
Love your quilt using the blues. I have lots of scraps that I have kind of sorted by color. Would love to win a copy of Amanda's book, thanks for the chance.
Susan
I love scrap quilts! My fabric sorting for scraps is rather simple. I use 2 gallon bags for each color family with a big box of low volume neutrals..I don't like to cut my scraps into strips or squares until I am ready to use them. Anything smaller than a FQ is a scrap for me.
Jan Parker
I love the quilt with nine patches and then the darker squares. Very original and eye-catching for sure! Well done!
Tamara Williams
I keep my fabric sorted by type; reproduction, batik, modern & lights . Then by jelly rolls ( love the strip containers) and smaller size just by color. Scrap quilts have always been my favorite, a quilt has to have st least 50 different fabrics and 300 is better! Just can't open a layer cake and use all those duplicate prints.
Suzie F.
I am just starting out so my stash is quite small--wonder how long that will last?!? Beautiful quilts here!
Michelle O.
I'm really enjoying that the scraps don't have to be tiny - 2.5" squares are manageable for me.
I don't have a lot of scraps but I like the idea of sorting them by colour and size.
Thanks for the chance to win.
Kay Bowen
Would love to win this book! Thanks for the chance!!!
Candice Langert
I love Amanda's blog and would love to have this book! I sort my scraps by size but may have to consider doing it by color to get better inspired. My stash is sorted by color.
Ellen
My fabric scraps are "sorted of" sorted by type or pattern, i.e. color, print or pattern, motif. Would love to win a copy of your book and begin the process of "using" some of these scraps 🙂
lewisnancy54
I love your quilt!! I don't tend to have a lot of dark blues, but I'm going to have to remedy that! I keep my scraps color wise, but haven't cut them to any particular size. I'm afraid if I do, then I'll want something I don't have. I love making scrap quilts, but really like the controlled scrappy the best. Great giveaway!!
Leslie K.
I purchased small clear scrapbook containers (maybe 12" square) for each color family (blue, green, yelllows, etc). I have all my scraps sorted by color but not cut into sizes. For my personal preference, I find that having the scraps cut into particular shapes limit my uses; I like to cut the size when needed.
I would love to have this book and try the Subtle quilt. I have always wanted to try an Irish chain quilt.
Lauren
I love the mini nines quilt. So cute!
Martha Henrichs
I sort by color, small scraps in baskets and larger ones on shelves.
PJW
My scraps are kept in plastic containers but I am not consistent - some are sorted by size or cut and others are sorted by color while even others have no rhyme or reason. There is a whole lot of scrappy loveliness here and in the No Scrap Left Behind book.
Carolyn Jones
Love your version of this quilt. I cut my scraps into various sized square and store them by size.
MaryLou
For controlling my scraps and making them easy to use I sort them by color in plastic
shoe box size storage containers - squares and strips are sorted separately... scraps are the best..
Wonderful giveaway.....
Liz
Love the blue chain quilt! And the 9-patch "white" blocks!! I store scraps by size in plastic bins, and loosely by colors within each bin.
Margaret Welch
I have really enjoyed all of the projects and scrap organization ideas presented over the past two weeks.
Debbie
I'm loving your blue and white quilt. I need to make a 2 color quilt one of these days. I try to corral my scraps into usable strips and squares and of course, the leftover crumbs. Love scrap quilts.
Terry
I had my grand children sort my scraps by color into plastic bins. They had a great time talking and sorting. Love the quilt!
Beth Stanfield
I keep my scraps in squares by size and I cut 2 1/2" and 3/4" strips ( for rugs) also. I've got a lot of cutting to do though. The bulk of my scraps are in a huge fabric laundry bag just waiting to be cut and used! I love your blue Subtle. Thanks for the giveaway!
Beth
AnneS
I'm a fairly new quilter so I'm loving all the advice from your blog. I'd love to win a copy of this book! Thanks for the chance!
Barb P
I started sorting scraps this winter. All leftovers from every project were 'sized up'. If large they were folded and put in that color bin, but all others were cut into 2.5 inch strips or squares, 10 inch squares for the back of string quilts, 5 or 6.5 inch squares. And those 1.5 inch were cut for my new ove....log cabin quilts. I love you scrappy quilt and have enough 2.5 inch squares to start one. Thanks for the blog.
Janice
I like to sort by sizes...strips, larger scraps, tiny crumbs, etc. but I've been considering the color system. They always seem to end up in a jumble no matter how often I organize and sort!
Candy Radford
I love your blue and white quilt! You have been inspiring me for years! Thank you!
Nancy McC
My mom and I sew together a lot and have received bags and bags of other people's scraps. Combined with our own this makes for a pile of fabric pieces. We also sort by color, type (batiks, ex.) and by pre-cuts. I agree that you need to use those fabrics and purge the ones you aren't using. Our guild takes fabric and uses it for lovely donation quilts. This way everyone is happy!
Susan
I LOVE scraps & scrap quilts. I keep mine in white baskets according to size-1.5", 2.5", 3.5", 5" & 7" strips. I also have a few baskets of 2.5" squares & 5" squares. I love adding to the baskets & just looking through the baskets. Your quilt is so pretty! This book looks incredible-thank you for the chance to win it!
Kerrie
I love your colour choice for this quilt. Blue and white make a great combination as it looks really crisp and fresh; and it would make an excellent quilt for giving to males or females.
I sor tmy scraps mostly by project-I gather all the scraps from the project and store them in plastic ziplock bags. Usually this works okay as the fabrics are generally colour co-ordinated anyway.
I live outside the US so would only be eligible for the ebook should I win.
Blessings
Kerrie (kezzie.k@hotmail.com)
Teri Seal
I have an open (and overflowing) shoebox of strips and every other small scrap resides in a messy cubby next to my sewing machine. I may need a new system... ?
Linda Bee
This quilt is right up my alley too. I like simple, geometric designs in 2 colorway fabrics.
Little Quiltsong
I've really enjoyed all the sneak peeks into Amanda Jean's new book and seeing all the quilts and projects of what other's have made from it - your quilt included. Love this!
What works for me, is sorting into sizes - 1.5 to 7.5 approx. - all in different little baskets. Then once a year - usually in January I tackle either my 1.5 or 2.5 - as they are the largest and make log cabin block quilts or rail fence quilts. I so fall in love with them, that it is hard to give them away. They are usually used for beach quilts or as in the last case - they went to my daughter's Veterinarian office where she works for those long days on the job. The staff she works with loved them - and 1 girl refused to use it at work - she kept hers at home, as she loved it so very much. It warmed my heart :)!
Susie
I put all my scraps in one big box and then sort by color into bags when the box is full. The sorting task is good brainless tv watching task.
Jan Schell
This is the book to get me started on using my scraps! I sort them by color in tubs. I need to start.....
Nancy B
My scraps are pretty organized, and mostly by precut sizes since I like to mix colors anyway. I would love this book, I can tell just by the photos I've seen!
Anne Dirks
She is the one who inspired me to use scraps! Made my first 'improv' quilt and love it. I have been given garbage bags full of scraps (from a quilt store owner. Her patrons bring their scraps and UFOS and she gives them to ...) They come in a jumbled mess. How would ya'll go about organizing them? I started cutting them in normal precuts, but then 'life' got in tge way!
pgtrans
I have TONS and scraps and just don't know where to start. This book looks AWESOME!!!
Linda Hamlin
I sort all my scraps by color and store in plastic bins...in my dreams. It reality, my storing method is a little haphazard. Only some scraps are sorted by color and stored in bins, and some scraps are assigned to project boxes with a pattern. Other scraps are jammed into the closet where I sort by closing the door. I need to get it together and be more systematic. Great blog tour. Really enjoyed seeing all the scrappy projects.
Sandra T
I'm a new quilter, so not many scraps yet, they just all go into a bin right now. Looking forward to accumulating more! 🙂
carolyn montgomery
my scraps are half and half; some are organized and some aren't. i do have a bunch of 2.5" squares organized bt color.
JennyM
I think this quilt would look great in any color scheme. I store scraps by color and size. Thanks for sharing!
mary
I love your blue! It is as pretty in blue as it is in red. I have my scraps sorted in colors as well, but I am never completely satisfied with my storage solution.
Jannette B.
I'm loving the designs in this book! I mostly sort my scraps by colour - they go into see-through plastic containers, so I can find which ones I need at a glance. Some of them get cut up into 4.5" x 2.5" rectangles, or 2.5" squares, which are the sizes I use for most of my scrappy quilts - they go into shoe boxes. Finally, I have a big container for all my triangles - whether they're leftover cut-offs from projects, or excess parts cut when I start a quilt. There's an HST-quilt worth of triangles waiting for me to have enough time to start that project!
Jenni
I've got my scraps in cute little baskets sorted by color. Occasionally I am motivated and cut them into 2 1/2" squares and strips. I'm just finishing my first scrappy leaders and Enders log cabin quilt and it is sooooo satisfying to have "no scrap left behind!" ?
Chantal Shaw
I use my scraps often and love making scrap quilts. My scrap storage leaves much to be desired though. After following the blog tour for Amanda's new book I think I have decided to sort by color. This makes the most sense to me and many ladies do it that way. Thank you for a chance to win a lovely book. Your quilt is beautiful.
Robin
One way or other a copy of this book will make it to my shelf!
Mimi A
I love your website and have used many of your patterns to make baby quilts. 🙂 I love scrappy and am usually picking out of others 'throw' piles to add to my collection of scrapes. I made a 'Thimble' quilt wall hanging a while back that I needed 175 different 2" squares, hence the "dumpster diving" ...LOL I don't have a great organization of my scrapes, but I'm working on it and always looking for ideas. Thank you for the chance to win this book.
Lorraine
Scrap quilts are my absolute favorites! Probably because my Granny was a quilter. My childhood memories are so intertwined with quilts...Granny was always sitting and piecing in the evenings (scraps were our old clothes) and during the day, she sat with her round quilting frame, hand quilting. The speak to me of history, family, tradition, and love.
lindamae
I am in the process of cutting and storing scraps into usable sizes, like Lori Holt or Bonnie Hunter. It is so satisfying to be able to find what you need already cut and to begin sewing.
Sue Marshall
Love how this book looks and the idea of using scraps in such a beautiful way - is awesome! I organize my scraps by color, in bins. I can often be found in my sewing room with all my bins open at once, just staring at all the beautiful colors. Love fabric, but by having it organized in this way, it helps me to keep track of which colors I have, and what I may need.
Carolyn Sefkow
My scraps started out sorted by size into different plastic bins with tops. But I've found as I use bits and pieces of them they often need to change bins so I'm rethinking this one! I try to make a scrap quilt every 5-6 quilts just to keep the scraps down to a manageable level.
Nadine Donovan
This this book sounds awesome. I love scrap quilting. I am not very organized with my scraps. I have bins of them mixed all together.. I love just going through it all when I do a project.. I love to make patchwork and strip quilts.
Amy L
Amanda Jean's book really speaks to me right now. I'm overflowing with scraps, and her patterns make using them easy. It was fun seeing your blue colorway for Subtle. I organize my scraps by size, but by color makes sense since I'm forever pawing through them.
Jane Lewis
I generally sort by color, but I like to keep Christmas fabric and Civil War reproduction fabric sepately.
Ronda
I love both the red and the blue versions of this pattern! I keep my scraps sorted by color in large plastic canvas bins that I made using yarn to sew the sides and bottom together. These are then placed in a three drawer filing cabinet with two bins to a drawer. That way I can pull out a bin and cut scraps from one color at a time with no mess left in my sewing room.
Jan
When I finally found the courage to purge the fabric that no longer inspired me and tackled the task of sorting by color, I have completed a number of scrappy projects!
Mercedes A
I keep my scraps by color, that's the way they'll get the most use.
Jean
I have my scraps in several plastic bins folded and organized by color or, in a few cases, by fabric collection or by company. I also keep all the holiday and novelty prints together. Amanda Jean's book looks like another winner -- her first book was full of inspiration.
Marcia
My scraps are currently stored by project. I need a good system of cutting and sorting them so they are easier to find and use! This book looks like a winner for anyone who quilts. Thanks for the chance to win a copy and for your wonderful blog full of ideas and tips!
Beth
I sort by size and then color. Love the blues.
Carolyn J
Scraps, scraps... too many scraps that need to be used in warm, comfy quilts. Great inspiration and love the use of the blues in your quilt. Hard to believe that all those low volume prints were leftovers!
Karen Courtney
I sort scraps by color & keep in large under bed boxes stacked in linen closet so the pile doesn't get too deep to see. I used up all my Christmas scraps making 2 of your Retro Christmas quilts. Think I want to make a blue one of those. Would absolutely love one of Amanda Jean's books.
Cheryl C
As a relatively new quilter, I don't have many scraps. Found a lot of good tips in these comments. Looking forward to trying a scrap quilt.
vicki
I try to sort my scraps by color, but I just have sooooo many! I definitely need this book. 🙂
Ilana
This blog hop has motivated me to finally organize my scraps. I do use my scraps but they are a mess. I'm looking forward to figuring out which system, or combo of systems, will work for me.
nancyangerer
This book is definitely on my wish list. Have to take BOTH machines in for service -- think I will finally tackle my huge pile of scraps and get some projects cut out:)
Lindi Wood
What a beautiful tribute to Amanda Jean's stunner! I made color-coded fabric boxes for my larger scraps, and more fabric boxes for the tinies (warm, cool, neutral). Strings are in overflowing boxes; squares and triangles in baggies. There's a system, but the sheer volume is too much. I'm great at weeding old books, but old fabric? Not so much. Thanks for the inspiration.
Gail
Oh, good...I'm not the only one who has trouble sorting & controlling scraps! In an "attempt" to stay organized I have my scraps in clear plastic bins. Lights, darks, holiday & left over strips, triangles, etc. from completed projects. A larger problem for me is always trying to decide how small is too small to save...sigh. Thanks for the give-a-way!
Mrs. Adams
I have a separate bin where all the scraps go. They are not organized beyond that...but this inspired me to do more!!!
Marlae V
I've started to sort my scraps in a cart with several drawers. In reading other people's comments, I hope to learn a lot more about organizing my scraps. 🙂
Doreen
My scraps are either cut into various strips & squares and stored that way and the larger pieces are color separated. I only make scrappy quilts so would love the book!
Clara
My scraps needed to be organized and I've been thinking "by color" would be the best method. Using them altogether in a quilt would be a challenge for me...I'm a "made using a collection" sort of quilter. It's difficult for me to sew without a plan. Do not ask me to do random yet. Thanks for the overview of No Scraps Left Behind and the giveaway. clara-chandler@att.net.
Susan DeWitt
Love the "eye candy"!! I keep my scraps in small squares (6x6) and "filed" in rows by color families. This is all in a 4 drawer filing cabinet in my bedroom. When a project comes up, I just open & gaze -- I've always felt the fabric/color/print 'speaks' to me what it would look great as. My daughter is saving large pieces of her daughter's favorite outfits since she was 3 -- she wants to make a quilt Hope will look back on fondly. Thank you for opportunity to win a copy of your book. Susan DeWitt
Barbara
I like to store my scraps in clear plastic snap top containers.
Sue Laughton
One day I might organize my scraps...for now they are corraled in a plastic jar & a bag or two.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful take on the Subtle quilt - Irish Chain is one of my favorites!
Sarah Gray
I need to be better organized. I keep them in a bin and then rummage through when I need something.
Diana Wolf
Awesome ideas for my scrap stash. Can't wait to try some of these.
Dawn
I'm trying to get my scraps to talk to me and tell me how THEY want to be organized! ?
Susan Shaw
I don't have a method per se for corralling my scraps. My adult came home to live with me a little over a year ago. Then his now 3 year old daughter came to live with us and now he has full permanent custody of her. In the summers, we have his 11 year old son. I am used to have a four bedroom house all to myself, so I have fabric (mostly to be used, not scraps) every where. We plan to get his daughter out of his room and into her own bedroom as soon as we can. In order for each of the children to have their own room, I'm going to have to combine my bedroom and my craft room into one. I had recently purchased a large sewing machine table. Luckily the back table part folds down so I can still use the machine in the table. I'll be able to cut out on the dining room table as I've done for years prior. What sacrifices we make for family! lol So it would be nice to have the book for an "expert's" opinion on how to store scraps. I haven't quilted since my husband died and he loved to see me quilt so I want to get back to quilting.\
I love your blue quilt. Blue is my favorite color.
Mary Thomas
I'm a brand new quilter with no scraps to speak of and want to get a handle on a system before the scraps take over! That's why I've followed this blog-a-long!
As much as I've loved the red version of your quilt, the peaceful blues would certainly make for a more restful no! Thanks for sharing.
ladawndalley
Right now, I have been trying Bonnie Hunter's scrap organization system, but I'm not sold on it. I used to sort by color, wasn't quite sold on that one either! I just need to use them, I guess!
Els godfroij
I would love to win the book! I cut my scraps into triangels and squares so they are ready to use. I am completely in love with the triangle quilt in the book which I saw on internet yesterday. That's the quilt which is high on my priority list! It's such a beauty.
Marsha
Lovely quilt. I sort by 2 1/2" squares, 2 1/2" strips and smaller strips. Bigger scraps are in gallon bags.
Mary Kasavich
I have been quilting for awhile and used to throw all of my scraps in a big bin. It frequently overflowed and it was hard to find what I needed. I finally sorted the scraps by color and placed into separate clear boxes. This works well for me - easy to see what I want and is much neater!
Beth
I have tubs, baskets, bags, totes, shoe boxes, etc. of scraps. I DO have some scraps separated by color in see-thru shoe boxes and some strips separated by size. I can't wait to see this book. It looks great.
Arita
Love your quilt. My scraps are in a very large Ikea basket....not a great way to store scraps. I have a lego type quilt that I'm planning on making with the scraps so hopefully will get some order to them soon.
Holly Hardin
I have separate dresser drawers for my larger scraps, and a couple of shoe boxes for scraps I don't feel like sorting. It is probably time for me to do something about that!
Susan R
I have all my fabric scraps in a plastic container. Every so often I will take them out and "make fabric" with them...sew them all randomly together, then cut the grouping into 12" square blocks. One of these days I will sew the blocks all together and have a very colorful, fun quilt. Thanks for the chance to win the book, it looks like a fantastic book!
Sharon Gibson
Your quilt is beautiful. I did try to organise my scraps after seeing your blog Need to have another go and more importantly make a quilt with them so the book would be wonderful. Take care Sharon
Nicole
I put them all in a bin and don't look back until I have a project I think I want to use them on. They aren't very organized, but then I don't have that many scraps, because I don't make very many quilts. Hoping to change all that now that my children are older.
Mary Reyngoudt
I have Amanda Jean's first book and would love this one as well. I sort my scraps by size - strips, smaller than 5" x 5" and larger pieces.
KC
Promise made to my 3 daughters to make each an Irish Chain quilt will now be fulfilled. Would love to have this new book. The quilts are beautiful.
Patty A
Finished a project today and told myself that I need to do something with scraps. I'll probably cut into 2.5 inch blocks to add to my stash of blocks.I love to get book to get ideas on using the blocks!
knitsandbeyond
Right now all my scraps are in walmart bags 😛 In one bag I have scraps that I am using to make a scrappy log cabin quilt.
Barb K.
Really love scrap quilts--and especially these--beautiful!
bjkaup(at)(abbnebraska)(dot)(com)
Gail
Love scrappy quilts, and your chain quilt. I'd choose blue and white.
Gill
I love your quilt - I'm wondering if I have enough blue scraps to make one!!
I sort my scraps by size!
joann e
I keep me scraps in a plastic container based on what project the scraps related to.
Looks like a very nice book!
Linda
Lots of great ideas here. All my scraps are stored together. Thanks for the chance to win the book.
Helene Fransson
I love scraps. Somehow it is so much easier to make something with scraps than using fabric from stash...
Gail Hammond
My scraps are mainly in baggies by project leftovers. Also some in precut sizes. Your blue Irish Chain is beautiful.
Polly Mertz
What great fun this last week had been following the blog hop. I certainly have been inspired and am so thankful to have a chance to win a copy of this awesome book. Thanks.
Polly Mertz

Jenny
I agree, it is good to go through the scraps and send the ones you don't love to someone else to enjoy!
Sandal
Ok, I admit it...my scraps are a mess! I try to organize them by size but am not very good at cutting them down at the end of a project. So, many of them sit in baskets here and there is my sewing room. This book is so inspiring and your quilt is lovely! Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy!
Susan Gibb
The book looks amazing. I love your blue quilt"
Kathie weatherford
I sort by size. Wish I had room to sort by color. I love the simplicity of the quilts.
pamelake
I keep my scraps in a tote. Originally they were sorted by color from the darkest on the bottom to the near whites at the top......originally. Subtle is a beautiful pattern.
sharon
i have 2 boxes. one with small pieces and one w larger pieces, smaller than say a fat eighth. I throw the scraps in, when the boxes get full I fold and iron the scraps. this works for a while. then I either cut some 2.5 inch squares from the small pieces or I use some of the big pieces or I just give them away. Not very organized but, it has been working.
Carrie McCann
I cut my scraps into off-site sizes as I cut my yardage for my project and store them in fabric boxes
Debby
I love the scrappy Irish chain quilt - especially all of the red polkadot fabric. I live in the US.
nancyangerer
So far I have them separated by size, but I think I need to rethink my plan and sort them by color as well as size. I have just taken my machine in for service, so I plan to get to work on my huge pile of untouched scraps while I am waiting. I also will cut out some projects for the future.
beadgirl
A fairly small fabric collection leads to an even smaller pile of scraps, which I throw into a basket. But it's fun to root through them periodically; in fact, I did that last night looking for itty bitty scraps for an ATC.
Your quilt is lovely; I'm not normally a fan of blue, but I really like the blues you chose.
Karin Pavlovsky
I have been qullting since 1976 so I have a lot of scraps. I love red and white quilts and hope to someday have a red and white quilt on each of my beds and on all my wall areas. I separate by color and also by size. I use rubbermaid totes for the colors and drawer units for the different sizes. I have a kitchen island for my cutting mat and use the drawers there for whole projects. I also put whole projects with the pattern in plastic shoe boxes in a pottery barn kids cabbie the I got on sale. I will never have all the material organized but I try
Martha
I do love scrappy quilts and this book would be perfect to help choose my next one!
Karey
Wow cute quilts! I love them! I keep my scraps in plastic containers. They are easy to move and I can organize them by color!
Laura Trippe
Hello. I sort by color but haphazardly! As I sew, I toss them into a lovely basket and then once in a while try to sort them. Thanks for the opportunity for the beautiful book!
Anne Eicher
My scraps are all stuffed in boxes! :/ I am working at using them up though! Currently on about the 6th or 7th quilt using scraps! This book is definitely going on my wishlist! 🙂
Lodi
I usually keep my scraps with collections (such as "black & white Cotton & Steel"). I trim and iron them first. I would love to drool over Amanda Jean's latest! Lodi in the US
Marsha Schmitz
I'd love to have a copy of that book. I don't have a scrap saving system yet but really need one!
Janet Best
Your quilt is beautiful! I wish I could share a revolutionary method for dealing with scraps, but I think mine pretty much control me! Thanks for the giveaway.
Renee
I love your color choices, too! I have a small basket under my cutting/sewing table where I put scraps. When it gets full I try to go ahead and cut strips and squares to a uniform size. Then I put them in a dresser in my foyer that holds all the different size scraps. I'm relatively new to quilting so I don't have as many scraps as some, but I'm getting there. I'd love to use one of Amanda Jean's patterns to use those scraps!
Anita
I have a basket by my cutting area &a my scraps go in there.
Karen
I have a habit of keeping all scraps together from each quilt I complete, and "pull" from these for scraps. I've never been very confident in putting together all the colors for a great scrap quilt. The quilts in this book are beautiful and inspiring.
Marie
I keep my scraps color coordinated in clear plastic shoeboxe size boxes. I sort flannels, batiks and Christmas prints separately. Love your quilt! It is on my to sew list now!
Michelle
I want this book! Love your scrappy Irish chain; I wasn't really drawn by Irish chains until I saw the red one and your blue one:). I am attempting to use Bonnie Hunter's scrap saver system and cut my project leftovers into useful sizes as I finish each Quilt. Bigger scraps get folded into my yardage, which I keep sorted by color.
Chancy Fessler
I really love the projects from this book. Right now I corral my scraps by color
Groupings. Blues and greens, warm colors, multi colored scraps, and black and white prints.
Dana
Wow this does look like a great book! And I have no scrap organization, but I sure need some! 🙂
Cindy
Looks like a great book!
Helen
Scrappy quilts were all I knew growing up as that was what my Grandmother made. Still go for the whimsical colourfull look of a scrap quilt that has lots of interest.
I am fairly new to quilting so don't have a big stash so at the moment the yardage is stored by colour in a small draw set and am sorting my scraps size wise into containers. Trying to keep the strips together as they always come in handy for something. Once I collect more then the colour sorting will begin.
I also use up the scraps trying out a new pattern . Recently I made 5 mug rugs out of the same scrap material but all different patterns and gave 4 of them to a group of friends so that we can still feel we are having a cuppa together even though we now live miles apart.
rasdas99
Would LOVE this book as I have never made anything from my scraps!!!
Cynthia Knapp
I really like your dark blue version of Subtle. I store my scraps in clear plastic tubs by color. Nothing fancy, but it works! Thank you for the inspiration!
Andrea Franklin
Oh that's so lovely!!!! I'd like to do a mainly aqua/turquoise one!!! My scraps are a "work in progress" and are getting higher on my to do list as I read and see posts like this one. Book would be awesome to have.
Beth
I really love scrap quilts! I would love to read this book, as I am still struggling to find my way of organizing my scraps. Right now, I am trying to sort them by size. I wonder if sorting them by size and color would work.
Esther Grimes
I made my first scrap quilt this winter and can't wait to make more. This book looks fantastic!
Pamela Neal
This would definitely be a fun book to own. A quilter is never shy a scraps ?
Nyla-Jean de Boer
I'm really hoping to win this book! I keep 2.5" strips and squares. All the rest of my scraps are presently sorted by colour in really large pickle jars. I wanted to make some slab blocks so kept pieces of all sizes. Besides, they are pretty this way!
Dani
Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous! After seeing all the beautiful projects on this hop, I'm definitely getting the book. This is a must-have book for all quilters! As for my scraps, I cut fabric into different sizes and store by color in plastic shoe boxes. This works best for me and I tend to use my scraps more now that I can see them.
Sandi Hill
Mine are in clear drawers under my table. I've just started cutting into 2 1/2" strips and squares for a project of some sort!
sahillATtelusDOTnet
Lisa B
I make scrappy quilts for my local guild's community service projects. I'm always looking for new pattern ideas. Lisa.
Joanna Harrington
Love the mixed neutrals in the Irish chain.
I sort by shapes in clear shoeboxes and also have an overflowing shopping bag with everything in it from recent projects - good for Ticker tape quilts. Joanna Harrington
Beth T.
Another thing that has been helpful to me, once I started sorting by color, is remembering to do that right away, after I finish a project. Otherwise, I'm tempted to just dump the inevitable huge pile of scraps into a big pile with the intention to sort it all out "later". I have to keep on it or it will accumulate and I won't turn to it when I need something small; I'll cut up my fq's instead, which is a waste.
Maggie
As a relatively new quilter, I don’t have many scraps. Found a lot of good tips in these comments. Looking forward to trying a scrap quilt I’m loving all the advice from your blog. I’d love to win a copy of this book! Thanks for the chance!
Maria
I keep triangles, strips and scrap bins. The bins need sorting but I enjoy hunting through them.
Betty Ayers
I sorted my true scraps by color and put in plastic bins a few years ago. But the "starter dough" (so to speak) is a tall, skinny trashcan which sits just under my cutting table - all scraps go in there first and when full, it gets sorted. I just committed to making the Summer Sampler 2017 as a red and white and this Irish Chain would truly fill my goal of making just one blue and white quilt in this lifetime - how perfect!! Would love to win the book and thanks for sharing your version!
Kay Hunzinger
At the present time I store my scraps in chest drawers. However I do need to separate by color and get organized. It's been helpful to read other people's comments about this. Kay H
Debbie
i am usually a follow the rules sewer so using scraps 'improv' is very hard for me. these patterns are more traditional and i can still follow the rules, but have a scrappy way to use my scraps. Thanks for sharing!!
Sonya M
I definitely want to make a quilt like this! I keep my scraps together either by designer or by the project I made. I need a better way to organize them!
Hope
I'm fairly new to quilting and it amazes me when I look at a quilt now and think "Ah! I can do that!" Rather than be intimidated. I have seen tons of great reviews and projects from this book. It is on my wish list. I can't wait to learn new techniques to use my scraps.
Barb
I am a scrap hoarder and try to sort as I go, using my laundry sorting system of lights, brights, darks. Except for little corners that get stitched as mini hst's immediately - they have their own basket, lol!!
Linda
As a recent beginner to quilting ( and newcomer to your blog) I am loving all the inspiration and fab ideas I am seeing. Iam a ' waste not, want not' kinda girl, so just love this idea of using up leftovers to create such beauty :))
I havent yet devised a real method for storing my scraps, ziplock bags and aorting by colour are working for me rit now !
Thanks for the chance to win !
Paige
I haven't made a lot of quilts so I don't feel like I have a lot of scraps but, I do have a bin under my cutting table that I drop scraps into. Selvages go into a separate bin, as do strips that could be used for binding. I have a friend who made a queen sized scrappy nine patch quilt a couple of years ago and I gave her all of my scraps that were 3" or bigger to add some variety to her quilt - she and I use very different colors in our quilts!
Karin H.
What a beautiful and useful book! My scraps are loosely "controlled" by folding and stacking them on a closet shelf in my sewing room. They look pretty organized until I get an idea and then they end up in a big pile on the floor, including in my dog's bed and covering the dog if he isn't careful! 🙂
Danni S
What a fun book! I organize my scraps loosely by size right now, but I love the color sorting idea. ?
Susan
Controlled Scrappy quilts are the best! Love your blue subtle Irish chain!
Jaime
I followed this advice that I picked up somewhere, and it works really well for me: I keep a small bowl by my quilting station and put scraps there. Once it's full, I cut them into the most popular sizes - 1.5, 2, and 2.5" strips, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5" squares. Then I store them in plastic baggies by size. So, whenever I want to do a scrap quilt, my scraps are already cut to size and ready for me!
Diane
My scraps need organizing. I am sure if I win the book it will motivate me to clean house.
abigail.cashelle
I've only ever made crazy weeks with scraps (and built scraps into current projects.) I'm excited about new possibilities!!
Vicky
Right now my scraps are a mess. I started trying to sort by size but now it is a "larger than 3" and a smaller than 3". Boy can scraps get away from you. Hope to get organized soon. This book looks to be a great addition to any library. Thank you for the chance to win a copy.
Annette Ladle
Oh fun! I haven't heard of these books before. I have my scraps by shape like jelly rolls but I think by color is a much better idea.
Julie in Ga
I sort my scraps by color and by size. It's hard to keep up with trimming and filing leftovers from finished projects.
Great scrappy quilt--I would love to win a copy of this book!
Tammy
I love your quilt! I just throw my scraps in a large basket.
Peggy W
I am new to quilting and I think that this would be a great way to get started. I admire all of your work....such an inspiration. I really do need to organize my scrap "mess" though.
Chelsea
I keep scraps (mostly) sorted by color in plastic bins. I have more than I think I'll ever be able to use! Thanks for the chance to win this book; her last one is my all time favorite.
Sharon
Lately, I've made steady progress in organizing scraps by color and size. I would love to win Amanda Jean's book!
Amanda Ashton
I love Sunday Morning Quilts, and it looks like this one has lots of lovely quilts too.
Barb Jansz
I organize by color, but want to start cutting up project leftovers into 2.5" squares and strips.
Emmalina
I organize mostly by a mumble jumble bin of my favourite scraps. The one exception is that I usually try to have a scrappy project on the go and I have a special bin for it so that as I go through my scraps I accumulate all the bits and pieces I need for the upcoming or current project.
Michelle B
I love the idea of making quilts from scraps, I have enough just don't know where to start! My scraps are sorted by size in cute tubs & fabric totes. I dream of using them all someday & only keep useable sizes.
pennylanequilts
In general, I organize by size and color. Sometimes I cut into usable squares for particular upcoming projects.
Dian
Trying hard to organize my scraps and small sized pieces. I'm gathering them by color and then they go into clear containers Needing to redo a closet where they will reside on shelves so will be easy to see. I love Amanda's first book and think this one will be even more amazing-since My first and only love is scrap quilting.. Love what you did with the blue/neutral version of her pattern. gdavidhoffmanatyohoodotcom
Nancy
I like to use plastic storage bags so I can see the fabric and the intention is that it will always stay together so I can find it when I need it again. This works best with small scraps, larger pieces get folded and stored in hanging sweater shelves.
Katia Barcelo
I do not have much scraps so I have warm, cool colors and solids
quiltedblooms
I truely need a better system...they are all stuffed in a bin! Your version with dark blues is beautiful!
Gwen H
I love scrap quilting. I really don't organize. I just grab a big bag of scraps and go to town. Thanks for the giveaway.
Jean
I love your blue and white version of this quilt! It's hard to beat blue and white or red and white.
Gloria
If you could see my scraps, you would know that I need this book! My scraps are stored in plastic contains but keep "multiplying like rabbits." and obviously I need another method.
Lori
I currently store my scraps, sorted by size in large ziplock bags. This is largely uninspiring, so I plan to make several of Amanda Jean's wonderful scrap baskets from her first book, and then sort and store by color.
Andrea Stacey
What a beautiful quilt, I have a bunch of scraps! I need to divide them by colors!
Linda
I don't have a great scrap saving system so it is great to read about ideas. And your quilt is lovely!
Martha Williams
My scraps are in plastic bins....disorganized. I really need to organize them, but dread the job.
Lisa W
This book looks so fun!! I like to organize my scraps by size in squares and strips. Scrappy quilts are pretty and practical. Thanks for the opportunity to win this book. Love Gingham Girls too!
Lucinda Broadway
Your quilt is lovely! After seeing yours and Amanda's, I am definitely going to begin one. Thank you for offering the chance to win the book.
Megan Sonneveld
My scraps are organized by size and put in drawers. I love how easy it is to not have to cut my strips or squares ahead of time. I can just jump into sewing. Thanks for the chance to win.
Lori
Most of my scraps are in baskets or drawers. Not as organized as I would like but I don't have an overwhelming amount...yet! LOVE Crazy Mom...also one of my first blog finds. Would LOVE her book! Thanks!
Ann P
My scraps are split between two bins, one for large, one for small. I could use a more fun (and pretty) system. I do have threads and skinny strips in a glass pantry jar with a lid, just because it looks cool.
janita
Beautiful quilts. I sort scraps by color but I' not making good use of my scraps at the moment. I would love to win a copy of the book. Janita
Lisa
This book looks amazing! As a beginner quilter, I have no idea what to do with the scraps (but I do at least know to save them all in a disorganized mess of a box)!!
Cathy Calloway
I don't really sort my scraps yet. They go in a drawer or basket, and it's grab and go!
Bonnie Rice
I have a bin for scraps. When a quilt is finished I get to add what is left from that quilt and spend 1 hour cutting scraps into 2-1/2 inch strips and squares 5" squares and 10" squares. These get stored by like size into color families by value. Example 2-12" strips that are blue get sorted into light medium and dark within the drawer or storage box for that size strip. When there are too many to fit in the storage box , I whip up a charity quilt of only that size strips (or squares) and give to local charities. I think your quilts are inspiring me to finish what I am working on and make one of your quilts this week!
Nancy
Great post, Amy. I keep saying I don't like blue but then I see a quilt like yours and change my mind. One of these days I'll have enough blues to make a quilt. (Maybe.)
My scrap saving system does not. I save nearly everything down to about a 1" square. Anything 2" square or larger goes back with it's "parent" fabric (if there is parent fabric). If not, it goes with the smaller scraps. Those little bits all to into a half-bushel basket. They are a jumbled mess and I have to iron before using any of the bits. I think I should sort by color but I just need to make time to do it!
Thanks for offering the giveaway.
Jan Bolton
I am at this time sorting by color and size like Lori Holt does. Thank you for the giveaway. I must make the tiny nine patch with borders quilt. The one in the book is so pretty.

I store my scraps sorted by color. Strips are sorted by width and light or dark

I sort scraps by color and keep them in bins. No matter how much I use them, they never seem to go away!
Deb S
You can never have too many scrap quilting books! So many great ideas......
Eleanor
Thanks for the opportunity to win this amazing book! I cut my scraps into usable sizes and give my really small bits to a friend who does amazing art quilts. ecboeringa@gmail.com

Your quilt is lovely. I keep my scraps in clear bags by the project they were from. I would love to have a project to use up my scraps! Thank you.
pieceandquietquilts
I have to admit that I don't have any system at all otherthanthrowing them in a basket on the floor to the right of my sewing table. Periodically I strip piece a square, admire it and then wander off into other projects. I am in dire need of attractive scrap projects to keep my interest AND a system to control my scrap basket. Seems like this new book could fit the bill! Thanks!
Tammy
I have a lovely wooden cupboard in which I keep fabric sorted by color. Small scraps go into a small plastic bin. I just made a scrap quilt, thinking I would use a sizeable amount of scraps, but I still have a LOT left : ( Your quilt is beautiful -- love the blues! Thank you for this giveaway!
Sam
Once a year i spend a full day up-ending my bins of fabric to see who still inspires me and who would like an exit visa. Love your blue quilt!!!!
Tanya
What a great looking book and wonderful ideas. My scrap collecting is a hodge podge with no rhyme or reason - really need help in that area. Thanks so much for sponsoring this giveaway!
Karen
Love the subtle quilt in blues and reds. Just love 9 patch period. Thanks for the chance to win!
Marjorie
I love your quilt! I put all of my scraps in a large bag that hangs behind the door. When I have time, I sort the into colors. Thanks for the giveaway!
Nena
My Storage System? It's called boxes that fit on my shelves, labelled Big, Medium, Small, Tiny and Batik. Not fancy, not colour-sorted (I'll have to give that a thought), and yet it works for me. Thank you Amy for all your inspirations...and btw, I love Gingham Girl fabrics! Right up my alley!
Shari K.
I sort by size. I try to cut up my scraps into usable sizes and then throw the rest into a "strings" box. I keep my solids separated.
Brenda Gates
Scrap quilts have always been a favorite of mine. They exude comfort, warmth, and precious memories of piecing scrap blocks with my mother and sister at a very young age. I tend to not sort them as the fun of going thru all my scraps brings back even more memories of the garment the scrap came from or the shopping trip to obtain the fabric, helps to create more fun.
Eliza
I like scrap quilts, but my children often claim my scraps for their sewing projects...

I have always loved the Irish chain. Now I have a new reason to love it all over again! I sort my scraps by color. I also sort by size. I end up with a lot of "sections" but it works for me. Luckily I have some old map drawers stacked in the basement that I store all of this in!
Johna
I do love scrap quilts too. They look so cozy and comfy. Throw away fabric, never! There's always some use for it.
RaeLyn
What a beautiful book! Getting control of my scraps is on my to-do list this summer! I love your quilt Amy, the blues are so beautiful!!!
Jennifer
Love the Subtle look. I need to put my scraps to work!!
JANICE F SEILER
I would love a copy of "No Scrap Left Behind." The favorite way to corral my scraps is putting them in clear plastic totes by color. I've been reading other folks ideas and may be changing my plan to put more of my scraps next to the sewing table to sew up as beginning and enders.
sara
I love to save the scraps and use them for mini quilts. I would love to have a chance at winning the book.
Jennifer L Van Wagenen
Fabulous! I sort my scraps by color and store in bins on a bookcase. Boring, but functional.
Vicki Gray
My scraps are in a few bins...not really sorted by color or size just yet!!! I admit it's kind of a mess!!!! I'm thinking this book might help me want to be organized!! 🙂
Integrated Bodyworks
I am new to quilting and this book looks like it combines traditional and contemporary designs, which I love. I have completed only one quilt and have fallen in love! Thank you!
Sally
My scraps are sorted by color into large zip lock bags. The bright multi-colored scraps (no dominant color) have their own bag. It really makes a difference for me to have them sorted this way. So much easier to put them to good use!
Ann Wilson
I love scrap quilts but struggle to do them. My scraps right now are sorted by size.
Laura
Hey! I keep my scraps in clear plastic shoe boxes from Big Lots. They stack so easy to store and I can easily see the colors. If pieces are too small for me to use then I give them to my niece and she uses them to "DIY" items for her American Girl house she's created in a closet! So sweet. I bought her a little hand-held sewing machine at a yard sale for $5 that runs on batteries and she loves it. I hope everyone shares their love of quilting with a youngster.

I love your blue scrappy quilt - I'm new to quilting, so doing anything like that is just a dream at this point. I don't have that many scraps yet, so I don't have much of a system. I do find it much easier when I have all of my colors grouped together though I am still learning the best way to really keep them that way. Every time I pull out fabrics to do a project, it seems I have to reorganize again!
Becky
The only control I have of my scraps is strips in one place and 2 1/2 in squares in another! I love Amanda Jean's first book and would love another!
Michelle Barker
You're supposed to sort your scraps??? Haha! Mine are "displayed" in an open bin under my cutting table and also piled on the lid of said bin which is stacked on a laundry basket full of Christmas fabrics. The decorative effect is actually quite lovely..... not messy at all..... 😉
Bess
I try to sort my scraps by size, but I give a lot away, too - they seem to pile up faster than I can use them, sometimes - lol. I love this quilt! 🙂
Tammy Mabey
I separate mine by color groups, and I love working with scraps! So much fun. Scrappy makes happy projects!! Tammy
Mischelle Pierce
I store my scraps scraps by color and have a draw full of 2.5" squares.
beckyrab
Definitely will look for this book. Thanks!
Melissa
I love your version of the quilt. This pattern would look wonderful with any focus color.
I organize my scraps by size and shape. Large scraps about 1-8-1/4 yard are together in a bin. Strings and selvedges are bagged up, and squares are sorted by color and/or value.
Dianne Lash
It looks like I'm not the only one still in search of a scrap system! I'd love to win a copy of Amanda's book -- thanks for the chance!
Kelli
I love the simplicity the dark blue adds to your irish chain. I group my scraps by color, although I do need to go through them to purge the excess. Great quilt and giveaway!
Sharon B.
Hi Amy,
I had to smile when I read your post about Amanda Jean's blog and how she was the first blog you followed. Your blog is the first blog I followed and still do. I made your Simple Stripes baby quilt as my first quilt. My quilt turned out well and I decided to then go to one of my local quilt shops and take a class. I found out I loved quilting and enjoy being in my quilt room. I like to sort by color, I haven't sewn a scrap quilt yet but look forward to doing one.
Thank you for the opportunity to win a wonderful book!

"Subtle" is a striking quilt. Amanda Jean really designed some inspiring quilts in her new book.
I'm not super organized in the scrapyard, but try to cut my leftovers into usable strips and squares. The biggest problem I have is finding scrap patterns I love that utilize my scrap system. I'd love to win a copy of this book. I have a very large baggie of 2 1/2 squares just waiting for direction!
Thank you both for sharing your creativity!
Barbara Wood
Looks like a fun book!

Mine are in 2 huge rubbermaids!
