Summer is flying by. Is anyone else out there wondering in disbelief how it got to be August?! I’ve finally accepted the fact that I can’t keep up with everything on the home front, nor in this Diary-of-a-Quilter world. So this post will be a bit of a hodge-podge of a few fun things I’ve come across this summer. (Just like my house is a bit of a hodge-podge with different messes, projects, kids coming and going, etc.) We’ll get things under control again when school starts. Hopefully.
I’ve recently received a few fun things in the mail that pertain to our favorite hobby.
The first is a copy of Lori Holt’s latest book, Spelling Bee. This book is every bit as darling and creative as every other project and pattern from Lori. I honestly don’t know how she does it! Her creativity knows no bounds.
This book features quilt block instructions for all of the letters of the alphabet – both upper case and lower case versions – so that you can create your own words out of quilt blocks. There are also punctuation blocks!
In addition to the letters, there are 18 other darling quilt blocks (each with directions in two different sizes: 6" x 6" and 12" x 12")! The thing I love most about Lori’s books are the endless variations of projects you can create with her patterns. It's pretty much the best Choose Your Own Adventure book possible. At almost 200 pages long, the she shares a TON of ideas and inspiration. My head wants to explode with all of the projects and block combinations I want to try!
And these are SO perfect for Lori’s latest fabric collection: Bee Basics. This collection features a set of 30 colorful blenders in a beautiful variety of shades as well as a collection of 24 low-volume Bee Background prints (see below). This collection has so many good basics that look great together, but would easily play nicely with everything in your stash. I love them. And even better: there’s 12 coordinating 108" Wide-Backs!
Spelling Bee and Bee Basics are hopefully available at your favorite local Quilt Shop. If not, you can find the book from the Fat Quarter Shop, Fort Worth Fabric Studios, and Amazon*. Bee Basics and Bee Background fabric is available Pink Castle Fabrics, Lou Lou's Fabrics, and the Fat Quarter shop: here, here, and here.
When we got home from our trip in June, I had a wonderful package of the latest publications from the publisher, QuiltMania, in my pile os accumulated mail. QuiltMania is published out of Europe and their magazines and books are just beautifully photographed and printed.
The QuiltMania magazine features more traditional styles, but I would call the designs featured very bright and sophisticated. Simply Moderne has more of a modern-quilting focus. Most of the quilts in both magazines are at an intermediate to more advanced level of quilting. Both magazines are totally inspiring with projects that want to make me push myself to try something outside my comfort zone.
Simply Vintage is a magazine focused on more 'primitive' styles with lots of beautiful wool applique projects, stitchery, and some patchwork. Each issue also has a section with a field trip to a different state. The Summer issue features a visit to Texas, including a stop at Magnolia Market (for all you Fixer Upper fans.)
I bought the Spring issue (pictured above) while we were on our Spring Break trip in April and discovered that Utah was the featured destination in this issue, including, to my delight, a stop at Heritage Park where I volunteered with my kids a few summers ago!
I think I first really became acquainted with QuiltMania when they published Jen Kingwell's My Small World quilt that was published in 2015 and didn't realize that they've been publishing for almost 20 years now! September will be the 20th anniversary of Quiltmania so watch for some special celebrations then! Even though I haven't had much time to start a new project this summer, I've enjoyed and been inspired by each issue during those times when you just want to lie on the couch or sit on the porch with a popsicle while the kids are playing in the yard. Look for issues at your local Quilt Shop, a bookstore like Barnes and Noble, or order them online from the Quiltmania website.
Another fun treat in the mail this week was a sample of the last two Quilter's Stashbox series. Stashbox is another monthly subscription service, this time featuring Hoffman Fabrics and Superior Threads. Each box also includes a full quilt pattern. The June box featured these lovely pastel threads and batik prints – makes me think of the ocean.
This month, the Christmas in July box is a preview of Christmas with a FQ bundle, charm squares and thread.
You can read more about Quilter's Stashbox here. Plus Stashbox has a special discount for you readers. Click here for US subscriptions and get an extra $5 off your first box with code SMARTUSA at checkout. Click here for International Subscriptions and use code SMARTINT for the same discount.
Whew! That is a lot of fun stuff! And, I’m going to share some of my bounty with one of you!
I’m giving away a charm pack of Bee Basics, the Summer issue of Simply Vintage magazine, and the Christmas in July preview Stashbox! Just leave me a comment telling me a quilting technique you'd like to learn more about. (To leave a comment, click on the word bubble on the top right corner of this post.) Winner randomly selected on Saturday, Aug 5. (Updated! Winner chosen Sat, Aug 12!) GIVEAWAY CLOSED

I'd like to learn more about fabric prep. My piecing isn't as accurate as I'd like; the blocks often end up slightly askew. I have even had some fabric shrink when I starch and then iron it.
Some quilters swear by washing, drying and ironing. Others don't wash at all. And now I'm hearing about washing, drying, soaking with starch, drying on a rack and THEN ironing. What works, and maybe more importantly, what doesn't work?
Thank you for considering my suggestion!
