It's January! Which means it's time for the annual Riley Blake Quilt Block Challenge! This is the 4th official series and today I'm sharing the block I designed for this year's challenge. I'll also share some of my quilts from previous challenges, and, if you're new, to this challenge, scroll down for the full scoop on how this free sampler quilt pattern works.
This week's block is Block #3: Daylesford and you can find the free pattern download here as well as the patterns for Blocks #1 and #2.
This block is a variation on a traditional 8-pointed star quilt block with a pinwheel motif in the center. The block is named after a posh farm I visited (and loved) in the Cotswolds last spring.
This time around I'm making my blocks from my upcoming collection, Albion, which will arrive in stores in March! (Don't tell the others, but I think that blue floral might be my favorite print of the collection.)
I paired the Albion prints with Confetti Cottons in Riley White and Dream (light blue.) I may add more solids as I go. I don't have my blocks planned out yet - I'm still waiting for real yardage to arrive as well!
You can read more about the inspiration for Albion here.
This year's RBD Quilt Block challenge started on January 9 and goes through May 28th.
As part of this challenge there will be 16 different 10" x 10" free quilt block patterns - with a new block released every Tuesday except the last Tuesday of the month. This is nice because it gives you time to stay caught up on the month's blocks. (Which I already need this month. 😅)
You can read all of the details on this year's RBD Challenge - as well as Frequently Asked Questions here. You can also find listings for shops carrying kits if you'd like to sew along with the same prints or solids that Riley Blake is using.
You can also find a list of fabric requirements here.
The final quilt layout will be revealed along with the final block on May 28th.
Here's a look at a couple of the sampler quilts I've made with the blocks in years past:
This quilt was made using the 2023 blocks using my Portsmouth collection fabric:
And here is the quilt I completed with the 2021 blocks:
It really is a fun challenge to make the different variety of blocks. They're also a great skill builder.
And I really love seeing the variety of quilts made using the same patterns. I'm excited to share this round of sampler blocks as we sew along!

Karla
I must have missed your first two emails on this project. I would love to see how you used your fabrics on the first two squares. Can you post pictures so I can see the first two in your fabrics? Thanks!
Amy
Hi Karla!
I haven't made my first two blocks - I need to catch up this week! I'll share as soon as they're done. But you can find the first to blocks + patterns posted by Riley Blake using the links in the post. 🙂
Cynthi
Where do I find the amount of fabric needed for your quilt blocks or do I need to calculate myself?
Amy
Hi! Here is the list of fabric requirements from Riley Blake for this year's blocks: https://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/assets/images/sewalongs/RBDBlockChallenge/2024/FabricRequirements.pdf
I haven't made my Albion version blocks yet, so I don't know exactly what fabrics I'll be using yet. (Still waiting for the yardage to arrive from Korea.)
Lisa
I LOVE your new Albion fabric! Such pretty colors and patterns.
