This week I'm teaming up with Oliso irons and some talented quilty friends for a Summer Dream series of free sewing projects. For my project I'm sharing a fun little mini quilt tutorial (with bonus Crib-quilt variation!) called Positively - as a reminder to me to watch for the positive happenings in this highly unusual summer of 2020.
As I mentioned this project is part of a series hosted by Oliso Irons, featuring the Mini Project Iron - a cute little iron perfect for quilting on the go. It comes with a silicone trivet for use as both travel/storage and as a sole plate for the iron to rest on in the face down position.
It's small and lightweight, and fits ergonomically in the palm of your hand, but has the weight of a heavy duty iron when pressing. Also a nice tip for detailed pressing and getting into those seams. It's the perfect travel companion for retreats and compact if you're sewing in a tight space.
One feature that I like is that it stays hot and ready to press. No waiting for your iron to heat up when you need a quick seam press. (Just be careful of if you're used to an iron that shuts off automatically after a certain amount of time.)
If you can't find Oliso mini craft irons in your local quilt shop, you can find them from Amazon or directly from Oliso.
Positively Mini Quilt Tutorial
This tutorial is for this 16" x 19" mini quilt. It's a fun, fast finish consisting of nine-patch quilt blocks. The background fabric for this quilt is a raindrop print from a Noah's Ark collection by Shawn Wallace for Riley Blake. I liked the symbolism of the positive plus vibes coming through the rain.

Quilt Pattern Instructions

Fabric Requirements and Cutting Instructions for 16" x 19" Positively Mini Quilt
- Background Fabric: ½ yard
- Nine Patch Blocks: Assorted scraps or 5" squares
- Backing: 1 Fat Quarter
- Binding ⅛ yard
Cutting
Background Fabric*
*if using directional fabric, make sure to note which direction you are cutting your pieces (listed width by height)
- Border strips 1.75" x 17" (long sides) and 16.5" x 1.75" (top and bottom)
- cut 4 rectangles 5" x 3.5" and 4 rectangles 5" x 2"
- cut 2 strips 2" x WOF - sub cut 28 squares 2" x 2"
Assorted Prints for 7 Nine-Patch Blocks:
- for each block cut 4 squares 2" x 2" and 1 contrast square 2" x 2"
Binding fabric:
-
- cut 2 strips 2" x WOF
Block Assembly
Using 4 background 2" x 2" squares, 4 print 2" x 2" squares and 1 contrast 2" x 2" squares make 7 Nine-Patch quilt blocks (using diagram above.) Sew rows of three 2" squares as shown, pressing seams toward the main print squares.
Sew three rows together, pressing seams away from center row.
Repeat process to make 7 Nine-Patch quilt blocks.
Use photo above to layout quilt into three vertical rows, starting with the 3.5" x 5" rectangles in four corners and alternating 2" x 5" rectangles between Nine-Patch quilt blocks.
Sew Nine-Patch blocks and alternating rectangles together into 3 vertical rows. Press seams away from the Nine-Patch quilt blocks.
Sew vertical rows together as shown.
Press seams away from center row.
Pressing seams from the back. Add 1.75" x 17" border strips sides and 16.5" x 1.75" border strips to top and bottom (not pictured). Press seams toward border strips.
Layer top, batting and backing fabric and quilt as desired. I did simple vertical straight-line matchstick quilting as I liked the way it emphasized the falling rain.
Using 2 strips 2" x WOF for quilt binding. (Here is a tutorial for how to finish - or bind - a quilt.)
As I was making this mini quilt, the thought struck me how easy it would be to blow up this exact same quilt design, using bigger squares, to make a crib-size variation. So I did! Here are the instructions for a crib-size 40. 5" x 49.5" Positively Quilt!
Crib Size Quilt Instructions:
This makes a super simple and graphic baby quilt that comes together really quickly. It's perfect for using 5" precut (charm) squares or leftover 10" precut (Layer Cake) squares you may have laying around.
Positively Crib Quilt Fabric Requirements
- Background Fabric: 1 ¼ yard
- Nine Patch Blocks: 7 assorted 10" x 10" squares + 7 assorted 5" x 5" contrast squares
- Binding: ½ yard
- Backing: 1 ½ yards (if used carefully the width of fabric of 1 ½ yards will be wide and long enough to back this quilt. If you prefer a bigger back, get 2 ½ yards and piece a larger backing)
Cutting
Background Fabric*
*if using directional fabric, make sure to note which direction you are cutting your pieces (listed width by height)
- cut 4 rectangles 14" x 9.5" and 4 rectangles 14" x 5"
- cut 28 squares 5" x 5"
Assorted Prints for 7 Nine-Patch Blocks:
- for each block cut 4 squares 5" x 5" and 1 contrast square 5" x 5"
Binding fabric:
- cut 5 strips 2 ½" x Width of Fabric
Crib Quilt Assembly
Using 4 background 5" x 5" squares, 4 print 5" x 5" squares and 1 contrast 5" x 5" squares make 7 Nine-Patch quilt blocks. Sew rows of three 5" squares as shown, pressing seams toward the main print squares.
Use the same layout and method as mini quilt above (minus the border strips).
Layer with batting and backing, baste, quilt, and bind. (This tutorial teaches how to finish a quilt.)
The Nine-Patch blocks on the crib-size quilt are also pieced with Lori Holt's Prim collection. The background fabric is Lori Holt's Gray Cross stitch from Bee Backgrounds.
For the backing of both quilts I used these fun rainbows from Shawn Wallace's Noah's Ark collection (available on Etsy and from the Fat Quarter Shop)- a visual reminder that after the storms, come the rainbows.

I did some easy piecing on both of them and then quilted them free hand following around the circles on the fabric. I have had to clean out her house and help settle her estate as my husband is is poor health. I have never hand quilted, but she left behind numerous unfinished projects; I am determined to make that a goal for this fall and winter - to finish and gift to family some of her quilting treasures. My favorite project was a cute retro camper themed quilt called Quilter’s Road Trip. Sorry, not one of yours, but SO cute. I had to buy so much extra fabric to get this one finished. I finally got it all finished. It was folded up on the floor, waiting to be quilted. I was dog sitting for my daughter’s two Frenchies, and guess what one of them did to my quilt? Yep, the old gal peed on it!!!! Quick run to the bathtub, hand washed it, hoped for the best. I’ll always know. And I’ll never leave a quilt on the floor again when there’s an old dog around. That quilt really has taken a road trip.

It was gifted to our handbell choir director and his wife, whom are moving from Virginia to Wyoming (and originally from Minnesota). This summer it is a tie. I'm finishing up a quilt-as-you-go picnic quilt, made of four big blocks and wide borders. Can't wait to sit in the sunshine on it and read. I'm also waiting for fabric for 2 sides of my outside borders to finish up a twin-sized version of your Four Square quilt, made mostly with Ruby Star Society fabric. That was a really fun project. As soon as I saw those prints I was reminded of hanging out with my sister and her friends in Palm Springs on weekends, during her senior year in high school. (Our home was in a much-less glamorous nearby town; we would pile in a car and 'cruise Palm Canyon Drive'.) At times like this it is hard to believe I was ever so young and carefree, but I have the memories--and now the quilt--to prove it.

My favorite summer sewing project is The Peacock, an EPP pattern by Violet Craft. After some initial preparation, it's portable and requires no electricity. It's great to work on in the backyard.
When it becomes epidemiologically appropriate, I could also work on this project at the beach, or waiting for a parade to start, or even while in line for a roller coaster.

My favorite summer project was the flag quilt you showed on your blog right before the 4th of July. It was a breeze to put together and the timing was perfect since I had a lot of red and white fabrics leftover from a red and white hexagon quilt I made. The flag quilt is done and has been gifted to my son who recently retired from the military. Thank goodness I really like the quilt because when my husband saw it, he ordered two more. One for his man cave downstairs and the other will be a raffle quilt to raise money for Alzheimers which is something that is near and dear to our hearts. So, thank you for the design Amy! My favorite summer project was sewing during a military change of station move we made from Marine Corps Base Barstow, CA to MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. While awaiting base housing I worked on a simple Double Irish Chain quilt. My sewing machine was in storage With the rest of our household goods, waiting for the official move-in orders, which took 5 months for our name to come to the top of the list. But meanwhile, I worked on embroidering the big blank squares in the quilt. I still have that quilt, but the dimestore fabrics I could afford at the time are in sad, sad shape. But still the peaceful memories of sewing during our 1yr old’s naptime Is why I keep the quilt. That was 46 yrs ago. Goodness sakes.

This summer has been spent making masks for medical personnel and the community as party of a local volunteer group of sewers in our community. When I’m not doing that, I’m working on my beginning quilting skills as I have just completed my 4th quilt and am about to start another. This summer has been so different - my brother, sister and their spouses along with me and my husband have a summer tradition of spending a week together on Dauphin Island since we all live far apart now. We are not able to get together this summer but before that decision was made, I decided to make a wall hanging of the Dauphin Island sunset as a gift for my brother since it is his house that we stay in. I have started the wall hanging and it is going to be beautiful and I so hope that we can be together next summer and we can hang the sunset quilt in the house as a momento of our summer reunions.
I have also been working on several projects for my sewing room and several Christmas gifts - quilting has been a life saver during this pandemic - but, we will get through this together.

I am now squaring up and deciding how and what sashing to use etc. My first time enlarging something to fit a queen size bed. From them I fashioned a small pillow for my daughter's home (she has two small children), and mug rugs for both my mom and myself. My favorite summer projects are things that can be done quickly, like small things, and also making things for my 'parts department' -- where I make a bunch of blocks in either one colorway in many patterns of one size, or one pattern in many colorways, and then later pull from that pile to make a quilt.

I'm having fun working on an applique project (Friendship Knots by Sheri Cefaldi-Morrell). It's so nice to have a slower hand stitching project during the southern summer heat. I have a full sized Oliso iron and I love it. Along with the wool mat, it always gives such a crisp pressed seam or turned-under edge. I think having the small Oliso would be a wonderful addition to my sewing station.

My favorite summer project this year is working on the Jelly SnowFlake Christmas Quilt and teaching my granddaughter how to sew. She’s doing pretty good for having recently turned 9 but Her main difficulty is using a heavy full size iron. She was born extremely premature at 27 weeks gestation, spent 4 months in the NICU and was paralyzed on her right side but has slowly gained the use of her right through therapy and hard work. Her lifting a full size iron Is difficult and scares me but she wants to learn so a small iron would be perfect for Allison. PS I love your star pattern and am thinking about using it in my husband’s QOV I am making for him.

Well, I think there's two...the first was helping my 84-year-old mom finish a Tula Pink Spools of Love quilt. It came out so awesome. My mom has sewed since we were kids and only quilted for the last 10. Somehow, this project has finally convinced her that she's a quilter and that makes me so happy. The other was a No-Points Stars baby quilt by Cluck, Cluck Sew with a handful of matching diaper cloths embellished with pinwheels made out of the leftover scraps. Amy, if I'm not mistaken, the diaper cloths tutorial was one of yours. So fun and the mom-to-be had a healthy baby boy just hours after she opened my quilt. 🙂

My very first memory of being in front of a sewing machine was in the summer before I turned 11 years old. My mom was there and helped me read a pattern for a "shift dress" and I made that. When I entered 7th grade and had turned 12 by then, I took my first home-ec class and have been sewing every since. I always wanted to make a quilt and made my first large quilt the summer of 1985 for my parents' RV. I made it in the colors of the inside. Now, they are both gone and I have that first large quilt. It sure got a lot of use as my mom used it for her nap on the sofa and cover herself when it was cold in Washington State. It has some tatters on it, but that doesn't bother me. It reminds me she loved it and wrapped up in it. My dad, one day, said to her, "I thought that quilt was to both of us!!" She just giggled and looked at me. Currently, this summer I am working on a quilt made from nothing but 2-1/2" squares. That mini-Oliso would sure be helpful!

The Quarantine Quilt by Pat Sloan has been a good project this summer. I think it started in April but I was slow to join as I always want a reason n to quilt. It came to me to mark something on the calendar that happened that day. I found fabric in my stash to most squares. After discussing it with my sister she surprised me with fabric for missing days but I still have some to fill in. So my quilt has become an ongoing project but the pattern is easy & I can see remaking it with Christmas or other themes. I can also see your new plus pattern as a baby quilt. At least it wasn’t COVID-19! I was tested when I went to the dr thinking I had strep. But it took 3 weeks with most of that in bed a good part of the day to recover. I totally missed the beginning of the BOM. Then my mother fell at the end of January and broke her right hip. She spent 4 weeks in a physical therapy center, moved back to her and my dad’s apartment and fell the next morning and broke her left hip. So we started over again. PT was difficult but she finally completed her second round after 6 weeks. She came out of therapy in April in the middle of the pandemic. I was not able to visit her and my dad much in their independent living facility so mostly I ran errands for them. No time to sew at all! They are now settled into a routine and I am a little more able to work on my BOM and I am almost caught up now. The blocks are a challenge for me because I have not made half-square triangles much at all and every block so far features some half-square triangles or flying geese. I’m not a fan yet! I would love to win the mini iron. Mine quit working at some point during the time I was not able to sew. It would be so much easier to use something smaller on all those triangles. I love the cute pink one! I love your “PLUS” pattern. I think I might just have to make one.....after all the triangles it will be super easy and a breeze to make! Thanks!

I'm working on the Thrive sew along right now as well as a Courtyard pattern quilt from Cloud 9 that's meant for an incipient babe. My favorite project I want to get done this summer is a tonal purple half square triangle quilt whose pattern I made up myself. Just stuck on adding the borders - I used a layer cake to make the HSTs and all the bias edges have made for non-square edges of the quilt top. I've been quilting for less than a year and I have a handful of mini quilts, 1 finished quilt, 1 quilt top with borders, 2 quilt tops awaiting borders, and blocks for 2 more quilts. Le sigh.

Making Christmas in July strip kits and charm packs to benefit our Project Linus chapter. My favorite, though, was a bright, festive Happy Birthday wall hanging for my grandson who just turned one year old July 21. I am working on some old UFOs. Most recent is "Vintage Treasures," an OLD JoAnn Fabrics BOTM. A few years ago I found a few of the block kits plus the setting kit and some fat quarters in a Boise JoAnn Fabrics clearance section. It has been really fun drawing out the missing blocks on graph paper and then figuring out how to put them together. I have made a few mistakes, but, hey, I'm learning a lot!

My favorite summer project has been teaching my completely blind friend that she can sew too. I set the speed to slow on my machine and use a 1/4" foot with a guide. She is doing amazingly well with a simple project with 5" squares. The smiles she has on her face is totally amazing me. She is one tough lady that became totally blind by age 30. It started when she was 5. She has an amazing sense of humor and an amazing husband. She is someone that knows colors, angles, and design in quilting and can follow a quilting pattern with her fingers to imagine the design. This has been one of my most amazing summers ever.

My favorite summer project actually happen a bit all year round. My mother’s side of our family has a rustic cabin in upper NY state. (I’ve been going since before I was born!) I found 18 Dresden plates ready to be appliquéd to quilt blocks at an estate sale this morning. Fabrics are probably from the 60s, and the quality of the workmanship is excellent. So excited to complete this project from someone who has taken great care to get the project to this point.

Thank you for sharing in this post!!!! My favorite summer projects have been cramming my small sewing room with my extra sewing machines so my girls and I can create together. My husband will come and join us making mask requests for his friends. We have been doing many masks and bean bag sets for their friends. When I am not helping them I am using the small chunks of time to get at some UFO’s. It feels so productive and when all four of us are squished together in there it becomes such a happy memory for me.

This is a fun quilt pattern. I am a scrappy quilter and keep 2.5" squares and 5" so it is nice to have both options. Love the idea of a mini for a fast project! this summer I am working on finishing UFO's from classes I took in 2015. Lots of tops that were finished, just working on borders now and getting some quilting done.

Hi Amy, I've spent the last 3 months at the cottage and have been working on a child's quilt. I decided to quilt it with straight lines for a change but forgot my ruler at home, so I had to improvise. I ended up using a long piece of wood and one of those hard plastic scrubbies for cleaning pots to mark the lines. Turned out great!!

This summer I have worked on several quilts. My favorite would be one I made for my daughter to send her off to grad school. An arrow to remind her to follow her path and if she gets off course, simply shoot her arrow again. She 'graduated' in April with no pomp and circumstance but we are very proud of her.

At the end of June I committed to piecing 25 quilt tops by the end of July for a local hospice facility. When my quilting friends heard what I was doing, several were anxious to help. Last week I delivered 39 and have since received 2 more. A husband/wife team do all the quilting and a local quilt shop donates all the batting and backing. That iron would have saved me a lot of time waiting for my full-sized iron to heat up.

I am making "cot mattress sheets" this month! My #2 son has requested that I make him two sets of "sheets" for his camping cot mattresses. "You can make it out of any fabric, and maybe there is something in all that fabric you have that you don't want," he says. I just LOVE this pattern of the week-- because my sewing project of the Summer has been a 9 square Christmas Lapghan for my mother! I've only begun to quilt (I always loved my grandmother's quilts so much!) I'm using a pattern from your site here that does a small 9square in the center, and then a 12 sq. around it (of squares and triangles). As a first project-- I'm doing my best with it... how I wish I had waited for this pattern! (LOL). Thanks for the chance to win an iron that works so well! I would love to win the Olisa mini iron. During this quarantine summer, I've been working on the Chandelier quilt from the book, Charm School by Vanessa Goertzen. I didn't like the look of it when using the full pack of charm squares so I ended up adding some fabrics from my stash and dividing up the blocks into color groups.
