This week I'm teaming up with Oliso irons and some talented quilty friends for a Summer Dream series of free sewing projects. For my project I'm sharing a fun little mini quilt tutorial (with bonus Crib-quilt variation!) called Positively - as a reminder to me to watch for the positive happenings in this highly unusual summer of 2020.
As I mentioned this project is part of a series hosted by Oliso Irons, featuring the Mini Project Iron - a cute little iron perfect for quilting on the go. It comes with a silicone trivet for use as both travel/storage and as a sole plate for the iron to rest on in the face down position.
It’s small and lightweight, and fits ergonomically in the palm of your hand, but has the weight of a heavy duty iron when pressing. Also a nice tip for detailed pressing and getting into those seams. It's the perfect travel companion for retreats and compact if you're sewing in a tight space.
One feature that I like is that it stays hot and ready to press. No waiting for your iron to heat up when you need a quick seam press. (Just be careful of if you’re used to an iron that shuts off automatically after a certain amount of time.)
If you can't find Oliso mini craft irons in your local quilt shop. They are currently sold out online but available for preorder on sale here (shipping October 31.)
And as part of this series I have an Oliso mini iron to giveaway to one of you! You can enter this giveaway at the end of this post/tutorial. This post contains affiliate links.
Positively Mini Quilt Tutorial
This tutorial is for this 16" x 19" mini quilt. It's a fun, fast finish consisting of nine-patch quilt blocks. The background fabric for this quilt is a raindrop print from a Noah's Ark collection by Shawn Wallace for Riley Blake. I liked the symbolism of the positive plus vibes coming through the rain.
The assorted color prints are from Lori Holt's Prim collection for Riley Blake available here and here.
Other supplies used in this project: Wool Pressing Mat available from Connecting Threads or the Fat Quarter Shop

Fabric Requirements and Cutting Instructions for 16" x 19" Positively Mini Quilt
- Background Fabric: ½ yard
- Nine Patch Blocks: Assorted scraps or 5" squares
- Backing: 1 Fat Quarter
- Binding ⅛ yard
Cutting
Background Fabric*
*if using directional fabric, make sure to note which direction you are cutting your pieces (listed width by height)
- Border strips 1.75" x 17" (long sides) and 16.5" x 1.75" (top and bottom)
- cut 4 rectangles 5" x 3.5" and 4 rectangles 5" x 2"
- cut 2 strips 2" x WOF - sub cut 28 squares 2" x 2"
Assorted Prints for 7 Nine-Patch Blocks:
- for each block cut 4 squares 2" x 2" and 1 contrast square 2" x 2"
Binding fabric:
-
- cut 2 strips 2" x WOF
Block Assembly
Using 4 background 2" x 2" squares, 4 print 2" x 2" squares and 1 contrast 2" x 2" squares make 7 Nine-Patch quilt blocks (using diagram above.) Sew rows of three 2" squares as shown, pressing seams toward the main print squares.
Sew three rows together, pressing seams away from center row.
Repeat process to make 7 Nine-Patch quilt blocks.
Use photo above to layout quilt into three vertical rows, starting with the 3.5" x 5" rectangles in four corners and alternating 2" x 5" rectangles between Nine-Patch quilt blocks.
Sew Nine-Patch blocks and alternating rectangles together into 3 vertical rows. Press seams away from the Nine-Patch quilt blocks.
Sew vertical rows together as shown.
Press seams away from center row.
Pressing seams from the back. Add 1.75" x 17" border strips sides and 16.5" x 1.75" border strips to top and bottom (not pictured). Press seams toward border strips.
Layer top, batting and backing fabric and quilt as desired. I did simple vertical straight-line matchstick quilting as I liked the way it emphasized the falling rain.
Using 2 strips 2" x WOF for quilt binding. (Here is a tutorial for how to finish - or bind - a quilt.)
As I was making this mini quilt, the thought struck me how easy it would be to blow up this exact same quilt design, using bigger squares, to make a crib-size variation. So I did! Here are the instructions for a crib-size 40. 5" x 49.5" Positively Quilt!
Crib Size Quilt Instructions:
This makes a super simple and graphic baby quilt that comes together really quickly. It's perfect for using 5" precut (charm) squares or leftover 10" precut (Layer Cake) squares you may have laying around.
Positively Crib Quilt Fabric Requirements
- Background Fabric: 1 ¼ yard
- Nine Patch Blocks: 7 assorted 10" x 10" squares + 7 assorted 5" x 5" contrast squares
- Binding: ½ yard
- Backing: 1 ½ yards (if used carefully the width of fabric of 1 ½ yards will be wide and long enough to back this quilt. If you prefer a bigger back, get 2 ½ yards and piece a larger backing)
Cutting
Background Fabric*
*if using directional fabric, make sure to note which direction you are cutting your pieces (listed width by height)
- cut 4 rectangles 14" x 9.5" and 4 rectangles 14" x 5"
- cut 28 squares 5" x 5"
Assorted Prints for 7 Nine-Patch Blocks:
- for each block cut 4 squares 5" x 5" and 1 contrast square 5" x 5"
Binding fabric:
- cut 5 strips 2 ½" x Width of Fabric
Crib Quilt Assembly
Using 4 background 5" x 5" squares, 4 print 5" x 5" squares and 1 contrast 5" x 5" squares make 7 Nine-Patch quilt blocks. Sew rows of three 5" squares as shown, pressing seams toward the main print squares.
Use the same layout and method as mini quilt above (minus the border strips).
Layer with batting and backing, baste, quilt, and bind. (This tutorial teaches how to finish a quilt.)
The Nine-Patch blocks on the crib-size quilt are also pieced with Lori Holt's Prim collection. The background fabric is Lori Holt's Gray Cross stitch from Bee Backgrounds.
For the backing of both quilts I used these fun rainbows from Shawn Wallace's Noah's Ark collection (available on Etsy and from the Fat Quarter Shop)- a visual reminder that after the storms, come the rainbows.
We'll get there!

Wow, I LOVE these little quilts. I’m so glad as I was reading down you had a crib size as that was what I was thinking of all through the post… This summer my fav. project so far has been some figit blankets I’ve been making for donation. I’m making mine coastal since they are going to the senior center’s here on the WA coastal area. Thanks for your kindness in sharing this lovely quilt pattern.

I am sewing a block exchange for my quilt guild. I have to make 52 blocks, 4 per person. Don't know when we can get together to exchange blocks. I would love to have the Oliso mini iron to press the "Whirligig" blocks, trying to use up my stash.
Rosemarie B.
With all that’s been happening in our world these past few months, I haven’t been able to get excited about doing any quilting. This sweet quilt with its happy colors has sparked a renewed interest. It’s such a happy little quilt. I’m going to start making it this week. Thanks!
Sue
I just finished a new quilted machine cover and pockets that go underneath my machine. I did some easy piecing on both of them and then quilted them free hand following around the circles on the fabric. I haven’t made a quilt yet, but this was fun to piece and quilt so it may be the beginning of something big! And, my machine cover fit perfectly, which I was so worried about. It was fun to make something just for myself!
Barbara L. Southard
My favorite summer project (and only one I’ve had time to do) has been making a guitar wall hanging for my husband made from his mom’s small fabric stash. I have had to clean out her house and help settle her estate as my husband is is poor health. I have never hand quilted, but she left behind numerous unfinished projects; I am determined to make that a goal for this fall and winter - to finish and gift to family some of her quilting treasures. I have needed a new iron for a long time, especially as I have only been quilting myself a few short years. Thanks for the opportunity!
Ellen
My favorite project was a cute retro camper themed quilt called Quilter’s Road Trip. Sorry, not one of yours, but SO cute. I had to buy so much extra fabric to get this one finished. I finally got it all finished. It was folded up on the floor, waiting to be quilted. I was dog sitting for my daughter’s two Frenchies, and guess what one of them did to my quilt? Yep, the old gal peed on it!!!! Quick run to the bathtub, hand washed it, hoped for the best. I’ll always know. And I’ll never leave a quilt on the floor again when there’s an old dog around. That quilt really has taken a road trip.
Kathy Duval
I love plus quilts and I’m working on one for my cousin who is fighting stage three rectal cancer.
TJ
I just found out my son is going to be "plus" one in his little family. I'm so excited!! That wee one will not be short on quilts as my heading is spinning with all the patterns I can make 🙂 I love Oliso irons, the mini one looks perfect!
Kelly Lautenbach
The measurements in your crib size graphic should be 5x5 and not 2x2, correct? 🙂
Love the look of this one. SOOOOO cute. Perfect for a baby quilt that’s lovely enough to gift and simple enough to get used. My favorite summer project was my Gypsy Wife quilt that I finished up two summers ago. It hangs over one of our beds and is a lovely reminder of making beautiful things out of discarded scraps. 🙂
Amy
Yes! Thanks for pointing that out! That's what I get for editing photos late at night. (doh!) Just added the update. I bet that Gypsy Wife quilt is a treasure!
Emily
How fun, I have been looking at Oliso irons for a while and don't have one yet. Right now I am working on an Irish chain quilt to give to one of my best friends who is moving across the country. I will also be getting a longarm quilting machine and learning how to use it. Love all your patters.
Teresa Costello

Austa Rogers
My favorite project right now is the jelly roll snowflake mystery Christmas in July quilt that Fat Quarter Shop has designed.
Amy L
I just finished a quilt from an old quilt kit using reproduction fabrics and a Miss Rosie Quilt Company pattern, Dem Bones. It was gifted to our handbell choir director and his wife, whom are moving from Virginia to Wyoming (and originally from Minnesota). So they needed a quilt highlighting the history of our area, and thanking them for a job well done. It was fun to sew and it's finished!
Susan Salo
Usually in the summer I have time to work slowly on a project. I did the jelly roll snowflake and have started a scrappy jewel box quilt. I'm also slowly FMQ a large winter quilt for us.

Just gathering supplies to make a patriot US Flag ! Should be so neat as a wall hanging for holidays! Thanks for sharing!
Kathy E.
My favorite summer sewing project was a table runner I made last summer for my best friend. I "knew for sure" she was turning 60 in August, so I wanted to surprise her with a special hand-made gift. When the day came and I gifted it to her, I was totally flabbergasted that she was turning "only" 59! We still laugh about my faux pas. She looooves the table runner and now I need to finish a quick project for her upcoming real 60th birthday!
Linda
My favorite summer project was the Irish Chain baby quilt from your blog to be gifted to Project Linus. I made it using the Hello Little One fabric.

Working on new quilts for grandchildren's xmas.
Beth Talmage
This summer it is a tie. I'm finishing up a quilt-as-you-go picnic quilt, made of four big blocks and wide borders. Can't wait to sit in the sunshine on it and read. I'm also waiting for fabric for 2 sides of my outside borders to finish up a twin-sized version of your Four Square quilt, made mostly with Ruby Star Society fabric. That was a really fun project. As soon as I saw those prints I was reminded of hanging out with my sister and her friends in Palm Springs on weekends, during her senior year in high school. (Our home was in a much-less glamorous nearby town; we would pile in a car and 'cruise Palm Canyon Drive'.) At times like this it is hard to believe I was ever so young and carefree, but I have the memories--and now the quilt--to prove it.
Sharon Coleman
I’ve been working on Fall and Christmas quilts. Trying to get a head start on the holidays.
Susan DeWitt

My favorite summer sewing project is The Peacock, an EPP pattern by Violet Craft. After some initial preparation, it's portable and requires no electricity. It's great to work on in the backyard.

I usually work on smaller projects in the summer, pillow covers, table runners, etc. Living in Arizona, it is too hot to have a big quilt in my lap. I really like the mini plus quilt. That raindrop fabric is adorable.
Susan C Quinn
My favorite summer project was the flag quilt you showed on your blog right before the 4th of July. It was a breeze to put together and the timing was perfect since I had a lot of red and white fabrics leftover from a red and white hexagon quilt I made. The flag quilt is done and has been gifted to my son who recently retired from the military. Thank goodness I really like the quilt because when my husband saw it, he ordered two more. One for his man cave downstairs and the other will be a raffle quilt to raise money for Alzheimers which is something that is near and dear to our hearts. So, thank you for the design Amy! It's got me sewing like a mad woman! And I definitely mean that in a good way 😉
Diane Kummelman
My favorite summer project(s) is all the UFO's I've finished since the quarantine. Five and counting!
Kathy R.
I finished the mystery quilt from Meadow mist designs, had it quilted and it just needs a binding. Now I am making Pineapple blocks(the fruit) for the fun of it.

Since my grandson was just born, I spent the first part of my summer sewing crib sheets, burp cloths, changing pads, loveys, crinkle taggie toys, bibs, etc., which made me so happy and now I'm working on two mermaid tail blankets for my grandson's two big sisters whose birthdays are in August. Then it's on to holiday quilts, God willing.

My favorite summer project was an appliqué quilt called posey pots from reproduction fabrics. Was my first appliqué and also a quilt my mom helped with a block when we went on vacation. Good memories.

I am so glad I found your blog and this charming quilt tutorial! I was determined to accomplish two things during the corona virus shutdown: learn to make macarons and make a a quilt. With now four months of tine on my hands, I have accomplished both. In fact, I am working on my second quilt! Thank you for generously hosting this giveaway!
Melody
Baby quilts!

I'm just finishing the Jelly Roll Mystery Star quilt and pl;an to put your saw tooth star block in the center. First time I visited your site thanks to a link from Pat Sloan.. Your demos are so clear with lovely ideas. I'll be back1

Although the jolly snowflake quilt along has been fun, I think my favorite summer project has been making a table runner out of Indigo Gathering fabric to keep for myself. Most of my table runners get given as gifts.
Bonny Broadt
My project for summer is sewing my bag of "so many scraps" together ( from winter projects) to make potholders, microwave bowls or crazy pillow tops.
wgs2fly
My summer project is a paper pieced quilt called "Cadence Court". Four of our quilt group are each making parts so we have to keep up with the others. That way I know I'll finish it before I hop off to the next project (which I am prone to do) My paper piecing skills have certainly improved!
PATRICE SCANLON
My favorite sewing projects this summer were making fabric panel books and ABC, Very Hungry Caterpillar, solar system, and USA map quilts for my niece who is a second-year, first grade teacher to use in her classroom.

I am SEW in love, with this little +++ quilt! I can’t wait to make it. I don’t have a favorite summer quilt project, but I have found several pieces of cute, whimsical fabric, and I am making summer skirts, for my 3 granddaughters! I have a full size Oliso, that I love, and have been contemplating the mini.
Judy Y
Y favorite project is making baby quilts. Love that they are doable, not a project that goes on forever. Also love working with bright kid friendly fabrics. Also would love to have a mini Oliso iron. Need a mini to make pressing smaller seams easier.
Caity
This quilt is so cute!! And the fabric 🥰🥰. I am working through my Christmas in July quilts!! Let’s be honest, I make Christmas quilts year round 😂😂
Connie Mitchell
When I was much younger I used to sew bathing suits for me for the summer. Now, as I am getting older and shudder to think of me in a bathing suit I have started to craft quilts. Since I just repainted my bedroom I have started a quilt for my new bed. It is a variety of star's which is something I have never tried before.
Janet
Really darling quilts! My favorite so far this summer is a wall hanging I finally got around to making from a small bundle of Singer fabric a friend gifted my several years ago after I lent her my featherweight for her vacation. Loved working with the black and gold iconic fabric.
Carol
I am about to finish up sewing together the Jelly Snowflake Mystery quilt that the Fat Quarter Shop has been hosting. Once I saw all the pieces together, I was so excited to finish! Waiting for those finishing instructions this morning.
I also am testing the quilt coming out early August called Tinsel Time by Coral and Company and I love how that one is coming together also.
Christmas sewing is July is a great idea!
I have some 5 inch charms on the way and think your Positively Plus quilt will be a great use of them. Thank you for the pattern!

Mandy Adams
I love your plus quilt and have got to make a baby quilt so that is going to be my summer project! I have already made a quilt using Xmas fabric so I can get ahead with seasonal makes.
Darlene Hoctor
Nice quilts, especially the crib size. My favorite summer sewing is table runners. It just adds a touch of fun to the table. I have patriotic ones, fruit and vegetable themed ones, summer glamping, and fireworks.
Nancy B
Most summers I don’t get much sewing done as farm/yard/grandkids take up time and energy. This year I’ve been able to make lots of masks to donate, and while I can’t say I enjoy the reasons for that, I do enjoy having the fabric and know how to do so. That little Oliso would come in handy for lots of things...thanks for the chance to win!
Teresa Hackett
My favorite summer project was sewing during a military change of station move we made from Marine Corps Base Barstow, CA to MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. While awaiting base housing I worked on a simple Double Irish Chain quilt. My sewing machine was in storage With the rest of our household goods, waiting for the official move-in orders, which took 5 months for our name to come to the top of the list. But meanwhile, I worked on embroidering the big blank squares in the quilt. I still have that quilt, but the dimestore fabrics I could afford at the time are in sad, sad shape. But still the peaceful memories of sewing during our 1yr old’s naptime Is why I keep the quilt. That was 46 yrs ago. Goodness sakes.
Eileen Caspers
This is a great way to use some scraps as well as a possible teaching quilt for young sewers. Great quilt!

My favorite project this summer was a t-shirt quilt for my brother's first grandchild (and my 3rd great-niece). I used old shirts from the parents and one from my mother and backed it with minky dots. My great-niece arrived on Saturday!
ROBIN JOHNSTON
My favorite quilting project this summer is a tulip paper piecing quilt. I have never done paper piecing so this is a brave new adventure! So far I love it!
Carla Toppass
As a beginning quilter, I haven't made many projects/quilts yet. A few throw quilts using rectangles. I started in June on a patriotic table topper that had triangles in it that when put together made a star. I didn't finish it until after the 4th and still have to bind it, but that was pretty awesome for me lol. The project I'm getting ready to do is a wedding veil for my daughter - I'm nervous about this!!
Carol Garner
I really love hand sewing for summer projects. I am currently working on a Grandmothers Flower Garden and doing some embroidery too. It is too hot to sit by the sewing machine at the moment. Also just gearing up to can tomatoes. That cute little iron would get a good work out in my household this Fall and Winter. So enjoying reading all of your blogs and your generous gifts of cute patterns. Thank you so much.
carasews

Connie Kresin Campbell

My favorite summer quilt is yet to be started. I recently had my paternal grandmother's sewing machine tuned up and need to fix up the cabinet. When it's done, I plan to recruit my daughter and grandson to help make an quilt for my dad, on his mother's machine. If all goes well, it will be a 5 generation quilt. 😁
Lea
Amy, your plus quilt is beautiful. Thank you for the tutorial. The wall hanging in the background is a beauty too.
I haven't done much sewing these days. But normally a summer project for me is a quilt with light and airy colors. Something cheerful. Summer placemats usually strike my fancy this time of year too.
Thanks for the chance to win the little Oliso.
Lea
Jane Hull

Tanya Mace
My favorite summer project is a Block of the Week by Lee H. I purchased it for myself and my sister to do remotely since this is the first summer we both have the summer free, but separated by about 800 miles. It is fun and challenging, and I feel like I am learning something new with each block!
I also purchased and read the book you recommended about the Quilts at Gees Bend. I stayed up late to read it and pored over the quilts! Wonderful little read!
I'm enjoying your blog tremendously! Thank you!
Elaine in North Texas
This summer I have been quilting on my home sewing machine to finish quilt tops that I have made in the past. It is so much fun to finish quilts that I really enjoyed making at quilting retreats. One was a Christmas Purple embroidered wall hanging and the one I will be putting the binding on today is a fall pumpkin quilt. I am excited to get to use them this coming holiday season.
Mary Kjersten
My favorite summer project was finishing up a rainbow quilt-a-long with Pat Sloan. A little iron would be great to add to my sewing room. I love your Positively Mini Quilt, perfect gift for my granddaughter who is turning 5 at the end of August. Thank you for the pattern.

I am working on a new quilt for my bed ( mine and my husband's - queen size). I'm getting a little bogged down adding the sashing between the rows and getting it assembled, but I love the pattern and the fabric, something a little bit out of my normal fabric choices.
Jackie Papallo
Adorable! I may just have to resize this for 2 1/2 squares! So sweet.
Debbie buckley
This summer has been spent making masks for medical personnel and the community as party of a local volunteer group of sewers in our community. When I’m not doing that, I’m working on my beginning quilting skills as I have just completed my 4th quilt and am about to start another. I am definitely in the PFC(professional fabric collector) stage of quilting, but trying to be brave and hone my quilter skills with the help of talented quilter bloggers and friends! I’ve been wanting one of the large Oliso irons for my birthday but they are always out of stock...the mini would be perfecto!
Mary Kay Relich
Love your quilt! I love sewing up quilts for family and friends. My list is never ending!!
Cyndy Lipe
Love this baby quilt, I was looking for a fast one to make for a great nephew and this will be perfect. Thank you for the pattern and the chance to win an iron.
Nancy T
This summer my fav projects were finishing up dinosaur quilts for our twin grands. So much fun!
Betty Carpenter
My favorite project of all time, including the summer, was the quilt I made for my grandson. Being a novice quilter, I made him a rail fence quilt out of his favorite colors. He is saving it as an heirloom. I am currently working on a signature quilt for him of all the signatures of his wedding guests. This one is more challenging. Thank you and Olisio for this opportunity and thank you for the tutorials.
Betty
Lauren
My favorite summer sewing project is the Elizabeth Hartman North Stars quilt. I'm on my 4th block and can't wait to have it all finished for cooler weather! 🙂
Sheila Merritt
This summer has been so different - my brother, sister and their spouses along with me and my husband have a summer tradition of spending a week together on Dauphin Island since we all live far apart now. We are not able to get together this summer but before that decision was made, I decided to make a wall hanging of the Dauphin Island sunset as a gift for my brother since it is his house that we stay in. I have started the wall hanging and it is going to be beautiful and I so hope that we can be together next summer and we can hang the sunset quilt in the house as a momento of our summer reunions.
I have also been working on several projects for my sewing room and several Christmas gifts - quilting has been a life saver during this pandemic - but, we will get through this together.
Lindy Duree
One of my favorite summer projects was a Christmas table topper for a dear friend. She loves my quilting and knows the time I put into it. She has encouraged me when I was down. She has always been a person I can count on.
Jacki Butler
The JOLLY BAR ROW ALONG has captured my heart this summer. The blocks are really simple and will greet my 11th grandchild in September. Love this positive quilt in both sizes that you’ve shared. I want to see the mini version another person mentioned!

My summer project has been to finish up a Civil War quilt that I started a while ago. I am now squaring up and deciding how and what sashing to use etc. My first time enlarging something to fit a queen size bed. It takes me forever because I am primary caregiver to my 96yo Mother-in-law and only have short periods of time to myself. Thank-you Amy for your fabulous work.
Donna Cole Beyer

My favorite project this summer was crafting bright pinwheels out of some leftover 5" squares using a Missouri Star tutorial. From them I fashioned a small pillow for my daughter's home (she has two small children), and mug rugs for both my mom and myself. It's been an uplifting and unifying to have these bright spots of color in our homes!
Veronica
My favorite summertime sewing is to begin (or finish) Christmas sewing for the upcoming season, and to sneak quick mini projects in between! 🥰 Currently I am working on the Jelly Roll Mystery Snowflake Quilt with Fat Quarter Shop and some very talented designers, ....and am also quilting my Woodland Wonderland BOM with Fig Tree and co. that I began two years ago and have just finished.😉 I am pulling fabrics for your adorable little plus mini quilt which I can’t wait to begin. I love quick projects between larger, more time consuming ones. Thank you for this opportunity.❤️

I always look forward to July 1 when I set aside my current projects and sew only on Christmas projects for the entire month! My daughter wants a Christmas table runner, and it's been sew much fun to work on that, plus I had enough fabric for five additional ones.
Marcia Gilbreath
This summer I have taken apart my daughter-in-law's gorgeous wedding dress and am making 4 throw sized quilts from the fabric for her and her 3 children. The first cut was the hardest! The dress was voluminous so I have plenty of fabric to work with, and I am adding fabric colors from my son's vest and the bouquet. It's a daunting task, but I am enjoying it!
Iris K. Tyler
My favorite has been finishing a UFO that has remained on my list for 4 years!! Spent all evening pressing 105 4 in square in a square pieces for the final border. This is made with my lg print fabric of Kaffe Fauset!

You all have made quarantining not so horrible... I have enjoyed “meeting” other quilters and quilting along a with all the suggested projects!!

My favorite project this summer has been a quilt for my daughter. She picked out the pattern (which was Aztec design) this is something I have not done before and it was black and white. I really enjoyed doing something totally outside my normal quilting. She loved it! Today I am going to finish my Jelly Snowflake qal. There have been so many qal's and I have to say I might have joined one to many, but they are fun!
Susan S Olsson

Niki Roberts
I took up quilting this summer! It brings me such joy. Somewhat embarrassing, but I haven’t actually used an iron on any of my projects because I’ve had a fear of getting the wrong iron. So far things are looking okay but my one quilting friend tells me my beginner luck is about to run out. Thanks for the tutorial - do you think it would be possible to modify for use with a charm pack?

Thanks for the opportunity to win the iron and for the cute positive quilt pattern.

I was in a Plus block exchange several years ago and enjoyed 5he block pattern. Thank you for the small size patterns, will make great Charity quilts. I do not own an Oliso iron but would love to win one.
aslottke
My favorite summer projects are things that can be done quickly, like small things, and also making things for my 'parts department' -- where I make a bunch of blocks in either one colorway in many patterns of one size, or one pattern in many colorways, and then later pull from that pile to make a quilt.
Rhonda Hunter
I'm having fun working on an applique project (Friendship Knots by Sheri Cefaldi-Morrell). It's so nice to have a slower hand stitching project during the southern summer heat. I have a full sized Oliso iron and I love it. Along with the wool mat, it always gives such a crisp pressed seam or turned-under edge. I think having the small Oliso would be a wonderful addition to my sewing station.
Janey
I have several projects but the most important one is a carpenter's star done in blue to be gifted to the next grandson that comes along. If it should be a girl, I already have a pink crib blanket completed. Thanks for the opportunity and your wonderful instructions!

It's hard to pick a favorite because each project brings joy for different reasons. Colors, fabric prints, why I'm making it. I enjoyed making some zipper bags for the grand daughters. For quils I really enjoyed the summertime picnic. I am excited to try this new one, for a baby quilt. Lots of new babies coming in the next few months.

I like your little 9-patch mini quilt for a quick summer project. I just finished making an apron for one of my sisters and was thinking of using the leftover fabric for some kind of heat-proof mat for her table. This would be a good size for those casserole dishes and roasters filled with garden veggies and our own ranch's beef, lamb, or wild game. Thanks for sharing your talents and passion for making.

I made 2 Christmas cloth books for our niece's twins. I bought the panels for these several years ago, thinking I'd do them up someday for some babies, and when culling through my Christmas fabric, found them again and decided to make them up for them for this coming Christmas. This will be their 2nd Christmas.

It is one of my favorites and has been put away for a few years because I got tired of it. The blocks are all done, so I just need to sash each block and put them together.

Mary Reed
My favorite summer project this year is working on the Jelly SnowFlake Christmas Quilt and teaching my granddaughter how to sew. She’s doing pretty good for having recently turned 9 but Her main difficulty is using a heavy full size iron. She was born extremely premature at 27 weeks gestation, spent 4 months in the NICU and was paralyzed on her right side but has slowly gained the use of her right through therapy and hard work. Her lifting a full size iron Is difficult and scares me but she wants to learn so a small iron would be perfect for Allison. PS I love your star pattern and am thinking about using it in my husband’s QOV I am making for him.
Becky
Love the crib quilt size, thanks for including it! My fave project this summer is designing a medallion quilt as I go.
Keri
I had fun making a Halloween pillow in a zig zag pattern using orange, black and white. I saw a picture on Pinterest and figured out my pattern.
Lauren J Hutchins
Thanks so much for the pattern for this darling mini (and baby) plus quilt. For that matter, thanks for all you share on your blog. I'm working on completing an old project - wonky log cabin quilt in patriotic colors. I hope to have it complete in time to use on Labor Day!
Janyth Ussery

My favorite summer project has been making a quilt with bright and cheery colors for my best friend (800 miles away) that is still at home recovering from COVID-19. The colors were totally out of my comfort zone, but perfect for her. Hopefully, I will get it in the mail this week and will send her the message she is loved by her friends and family!
Mary
My favorite project has been teaching a friend how to quilt. We made a table runner top, and I sent her home with instructions to make (90) 4-patches for a lap quilt. Next session, I plan to show her how to layer, quilt and bind the table topper, then get her started on assembling the lap quilt. It has inspired me at a time when my creativity and interest in quilting was lagging a bit.
Vicki Gensini
I am a beginner quilter and I pieced together the Yellow Brick Road pattern and still need to finish the border. I am enjoying learning more about quilting and love your blog.

Well, I think there's two...the first was helping my 84-year-old mom finish a Tula Pink Spools of Love quilt. It came out so awesome. My mom has sewed since we were kids and only quilted for the last 10. Somehow, this project has finally convinced her that she's a quilter and that makes me so happy. The other was a No-Points Stars baby quilt by Cluck, Cluck Sew with a handful of matching diaper cloths embellished with pinwheels made out of the leftover scraps. Amy, if I'm not mistaken, the diaper cloths tutorial was one of yours. So fun and the mom-to-be had a healthy baby boy just hours after she opened my quilt. 🙂
I love your blog and, regardless of the topic, find it always makes me want to sit down and sew something. Anything. Thank you for the great inspiration. I love your compiled lists (25 fave summer projects, etc.) and would love to see more pics of your sewing room and tips for keeping organized. Stay well!

I am new to quilting, but so far my favorite summer time project is "Going on a Picnic" by Pat Sloan. I always thought quilting was extremely hard, but I am finding out that if you take it step by step it isn't as hard as I thought. Thanks for the patterns Pat:)
Rita Montgomery

I am making the Forever Friends quilt - which is a scrappy trip around the world. Very challenging to understand the directions and the one inch finished squares are not for the faint of heart. But I am loving it!
Vicki Robles
My very first memory of being in front of a sewing machine was in the summer before I turned 11 years old. My mom was there and helped me read a pattern for a "shift dress" and I made that. When I entered 7th grade and had turned 12 by then, I took my first home-ec class and have been sewing every since. I always wanted to make a quilt and made my first large quilt the summer of 1985 for my parents' RV. I made it in the colors of the inside. Now, they are both gone and I have that first large quilt. It sure got a lot of use as my mom used it for her nap on the sofa and cover herself when it was cold in Washington State. It has some tatters on it, but that doesn't bother me. It reminds me she loved it and wrapped up in it. My dad, one day, said to her, "I thought that quilt was to both of us!!" She just giggled and looked at me. Currently, this summer I am working on a quilt made from nothing but 2-1/2" squares. That mini-Oliso would sure be helpful!

The Quarantine Quilt by Pat Sloan has been a good project this summer. I think it started in April but I was slow to join as I always want a reason n to quilt. It came to me to mark something on the calendar that happened that day. I found fabric in my stash to most squares. After discussing it with my sister she surprised me with fabric for missing days but I still have some to fill in. So my quilt has become an ongoing project but the pattern is easy & I can see remaking it with Christmas or other themes. I can also see your new plus pattern as a baby quilt. Have some of them coming in the future
Donna LEE Payne

Half square triangles are calling my name. I ordered the fabric online (with lots of switching between tabs to see if the colors would play nicely. I'm really pleased that the colors work, so some kind of star pattern will be appearing very soon. I haven't been able to sew this summer because of moving, but we should be in the "new" house in another couple of weeks. 🙂
Alicia Stokes
I have made several sets of place mats for us to carry in the car. When we are out and stop to eat at outdoor dining or fast food we have a clean way to utilize an outdoor table-everyone has their own! Then they just get thrown in the wash for another use!
Katherine McNierney
I love making placemats in the summer. They are small and go quickly and make great gifts.

My favorite summer project was to make a fall themed quilt for my 91 year old shut in friend. I have visited her weekly for over 11 years but haven't been able to visit due to covid so I used the time to make her a quilt. Luckily the facility where she lives let me drop the quilt off where it was passed on to her. She called me so excited to get a quilty hug from me!
Debby Malandra

My favorite summer project has been working on Kansas Troubles 20 year BOM.
SHEILA FREEMAN
my favorite has been the jelly roll snowflake quilt with Pat Sloan
Kathy Clayton
I guess my favorite summer quilt is the one I’m working on right now. A BOM that really began in January but I came home from visiting my daughter over New Year’s with the Influenza B. At least it wasn’t COVID-19! I was tested when I went to the dr thinking I had strep. But it took 3 weeks with most of that in bed a good part of the day to recover. I totally missed the beginning of the BOM. Then my mother fell at the end of January and broke her right hip. She spent 4 weeks in a physical therapy center, moved back to her and my dad’s apartment and fell the next morning and broke her left hip. So we started over again. PT was difficult but she finally completed her second round after 6 weeks. She came out of therapy in April in the middle of the pandemic. I was not able to visit her and my dad much in their independent living facility so mostly I ran errands for them. No time to sew at all! They are now settled into a routine and I am a little more able to work on my BOM and I am almost caught up now. The blocks are a challenge for me because I have not made half-square triangles much at all and every block so far features some half-square triangles or flying geese. I’m not a fan yet! I would love to win the mini iron. Mine quit working at some point during the time I was not able to sew. It would be so much easier to use something smaller on all those triangles. I love the cute pink one! I love your “PLUS” pattern. I think I might just have to make one.....after all the triangles it will be super easy and a breeze to make! Thanks!
Teri
My favorite summer project has been getting to finish a table runner for my son...a long standing UFO. Love the positivity quilt.

I have been enjoying making seasonal table runners (summer, winter, fall and spring) for Christmas gifts and also hospital gowns for nursing homes and an agency that serves people with developmental disabilities. So much sewing and not enough time! 😄
Doreen Savia
I've made a lot of quilts in the 50+ years I've been quilting and have given them all away. I lost my dog in January and that was really depressing (to me). I had been going to make a quilt with her and my last two dogs on it. So, I started it this summer. This will be the one I will keep for me.
Carol
I like to get an early start on making projects to sell at the Christmas craft fairs during the summer months.
Barbara Chase
My favorite quilt was the Pat Sloan ‘Stay at Home’ quilt-along. I have never participated in a quilt-along online and it was so much fun. I enjoyed looking through my fabric and finding almost 30 pieces that had quilting notions and related topics. I found your site through a link from Pat Sloan’s YouTube.
Norma Fielding
My favorite summer project is continuing to make quilts fro the Quilts for Kids project. We have a local group and typically get together for a sew day once a month, but have not been able to do so recently. It is a great group of people who are involved making quilts for kids. Introducing my 12 year old grand daughter to sewing has been the best of all sewing experiences. Learning this skill has taught her a new way to find joy in these times and has been such a gift for both of us. Stitching up memories that will last a lifetime. We are working with your Christmas tree blocks and turning them into pillows of all sizes to donate to our church for Christmas gifts. What a great starter project for her. My favorite quilt projects in the summer are Christmas and Fall quilts! It's so hot that thinking about those cooler times makes it easier
Jen
I'm working on the Thrive sew along right now as well as a Courtyard pattern quilt from Cloud 9 that's meant for an incipient babe. My favorite project I want to get done this summer is a tonal purple half square triangle quilt whose pattern I made up myself. Just stuck on adding the borders - I used a layer cake to make the HSTs and all the bias edges have made for non-square edges of the quilt top. I've been quilting for less than a year and I have a handful of mini quilts, 1 finished quilt, 1 quilt top with borders, 2 quilt tops awaiting borders, and blocks for 2 more quilts. Le sigh.
Deb
I made summer and patriotic table runners and front door wall hangings, but mostly I've been making masks....over 300 currently.

Beth Schnellenberger
I’m always looking for patterns that use charm squares. I really like this one. The iron is adorable. I’d love to get one.
Cassy L.
This summer it has been hand applique and hand stitching to soothe my mind during this weird time. I did sew a bunch of small 16-patch blocks into a table topper then machine quilted it for a satisfying July project. Now I'm inspired to pull fabric from my stash and make your cute mini-quilt.
Elizabeth Stracener

However the bride has called off the wedding. Luckily I had not begun construction but now have the challenge of making a totally different quilt from the cut pieces. It has been surprisingly enjoyable to figure this out.
Deb O.
I am hand quilting (finishing) a grandmother's flower garden quilt started by my mother. It was about half quilted when she passed away.

I finished up a Quilt for my daughter to snuggle up in when she reads on the porch. It has gotten a bit warm to use right now but it is ready for the cooler mornings to come! Now I am starting on the Missouri star remake you did with ElizabethHartman’s
great fabric. You are a terrific inspiration to me, Amy.

Such a happy little quilt!

Making Christmas in July strip kits and charm packs to benefit our Project Linus chapter. Our 90 year old member passed away in May and willed her huge fabric collection to us, including 3 totes of Christmas fabric. We turned it into kits for holiday projects! Lots of ironing and measuring, and volunteer hours.
Dawn
My favorite this year is making a baby quilt for my daughters daughter out of her dresses I made her when she was growing up. I saved my scraps in a cedar chest and now they’re her baby quilt!
Debbie Miller
My favorite and ONLY sewing project this summer was a quilt for my first great grandson-which I hand quilted!
Sheila Friday
My favorite summer project has been to finish my UFOs as I prefer piecing to finishing. I now have 16 completed quilts in my stash. Should have donated more!
Lori Gray
Now that my oldest child FINALLY has a child (NOT judging, NO pressure on her), she's concerned about homemade holiday decorations like she had when she was growing up - for all the holidays! And, her husband is of a different faith than we, so there are even MORE holidays to make for. Those decorations have been my summer sewing project. My favorite, though, was a bright, festive Happy Birthday wall hanging for my grandson who just turned one year old July 21. It's the sort of thing in front of which he can have his picture taken every year, and he'll always know his Grandma, who lives 7,500 miles away, made it especially for him!
Pat
I’ve been making zippered project bags. Sewing with vinyl is new for me but I love the finished product!
Kim Zbichorski
This summer I am working on a quilt using Summertime fabric: Red White and Blue, all half square triangles.

My favorite summer sewing project (so far) has been pillows in red, white and blue. I made a dresden plate sewed onto denim, a large 3d pinwheel (using layer cakes) and an applique pillow kit that has been in my stash for a few years. You and Sherri McConnell inspired me to do summer red, white and blue projects.
Jacqui

I made a set of potholders this week for an advent calendar gift. I have not sewn potholders since middle school and they came out really cute!
Kathie
I have been having fun making blocks from Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage 2 book - I splurged on a fat quarter set of her fabric by the same name. Living out in the country, this book and fabric really appealed to me. I'm also in the process of making Treasurie's Reversible Sun Hat - so many possibilities in one pattern!! And super cute!! I really like this mini quilt, so now it's on my never ending list!!
Jacqueline Fisher
This summer I “found” in the fabric closet a pack of fat quarters I’d been waiting to use on just the right project! Had a new pattern in hand plus background fabric and made my “ I-sew-lation therapy” quilt—love it!!
Gwyn
Amy, thank you for the wonderful tutorials to use up my left overs!! My favorite project this summer was Trip Around the World quilt along with a Patreon group. I made my SIL a lap size quilt with 2 1/2 inch strips/ Cotton + Steel Halloween theme fabric - very mod. 🙂 I usually like to hand piece when I am on the road, so the iron would be wonderful! Thanks for the giveaway!
kirajoycegarvie
My favorite summer project was finding scraps of fun fabric with crocodiles, zebras, and birds on it, and making mini (6 inches square!) window pane quilts to send to my sister who is completely isolated right now because of the pandemic! I hope they cheer her up - they are in the mail right now!
Sharon Browne
My favorite projects this summer has been to make several mini quilts so far, with more to come.
Joanne Bushman
I am working on some old UFOs. Most recent is "Vintage Treasures," an OLD JoAnn Fabrics BOTM. A few years ago I found a few of the block kits plus the setting kit and some fat quarters in a Boise JoAnn Fabrics clearance section. It has been really fun drawing out the missing blocks on graph paper and then figuring out how to put them together. I have made a few mistakes, but, hey, I'm learning a lot!
Amy, I love your website and appreciate your sharing about your family and where you live, especially the photo in your latest email. My husband and I lived in Utah for a year. We really loved living there and skiing at Beaver Mountain. I could certainly use the mini iron because I live in a small condo and don't have a lot of room.
Melody Simonson
My mom and I have been working on a tshirt quilt for my nephew. It is (9) 12 in. Blocks wide and (9) 12 inch blocks long plus 1 inch sashings in between each block. Making it measure 118 inches by 118 inches. He is going to have it professionally quilted and then we will bind it.
Karen

Marie
This summer’s favorite is my scrappy July Stars table runner from Cluck Cluck Sew’s Modern Holiday Table Runners; so far I’ve made 3 of the 6 patterns!
Barbara C.
My favorite summer project has been teaching my completely blind friend that she can sew too. I set the speed to slow on my machine and use a 1/4" foot with a guide. She is doing amazingly well with a simple project with 5" squares. The smiles she has on her face is totally amazing me. She is one tough lady that became totally blind by age 30. It started when she was 5. She has an amazing sense of humor and an amazing husband. She is someone that knows colors, angles, and design in quilting and can follow a quilting pattern with her fingers to imagine the design. This has been one of my most amazing summers ever.
Alexandra
It’s been baby quilt heaven around here! 1 new grand baby born 2 weeks ago and another grand baby due the end of October.

My favorite summer project was Jedi Craft Girl’s “By the Sea” beach tote. I had never made anything like it, and after I finished the tote I made two zippered pouches from the leftover fabric. Another new thing for me. This was a gift for my daughter and she already used it on our camping trip last month. Thank you for this opportunity, I think I would love that cute little iron💕
Marion Lisko
My favorite summer project actually happen a bit all year round. My mother’s side of our family has a rustic cabin in upper NY state. (I’ve been going since before I was born!) There are zillions of memories there and when I started quilting I made a promise to myself to put a quilt on every bed there (there are 7 rooms total all with 2 beds of one sort or another). So far almost half way there- and I am sad not to be there right now - not getting in a plane! Love them - and the process! Your tutorials and inspiration helped!!!!
Janice Stokes

My husband will come and join us making mask requests for his friends. We have been doing many masks and bean bag sets for their friends. When I am not helping them I am using the small chunks of time to get at some UFO’s. It feels so productive and when all four of us are squished together in there it becomes such a happy memory for me.
Annette

Hi Amy, I've spent the last 3 months at the cottage and have been working on a child's quilt. I decided to quilt it with straight lines for a change but forgot my ruler at home, so I had to improvise. I ended up using a long piece of wood and one of those hard plastic scrubbies for cleaning pots to mark the lines. Turned out great!!
Lori
Thanks for the baby quilt pattern! I started a baby quilt months ago and didn't like how the first block turned out, so I put it away. This pattern will work with what I have already cut. So Thank You!! Favorite summer sewing has been able to finish up some old projects. I also got my sewing room all organized. I want to make the sewing station also. Thanks for a chance to win the Oliso mini. Have a great Day!!

scstephquilts
At the end of June I committed to piecing 25 quilt tops by the end of July for a local hospice facility. When my quilting friends heard what I was doing, several were anxious to help. Last week I delivered 39 and have since received 2 more. A husband/wife team do all the quilting and a local quilt shop donates all the batting and backing. That iron would have saved me a lot of time waiting for my full-sized iron to heat up.
Margie May
hat a cute little quilt. Great fabric choices. I love my large Oliso iron and it would be great to have the smaller one too.
Marge
My summer projects have been face masks for all the family and relatives. I had fun picking fabrics to match their favorite hobbies or interests. Now it's on to Christmas gifts and that will include mini quilt/wall hangings, pillowcases for the grands and purses for the ladies.

My favorite summer project was making 9 patch blocks for The Quilt of Valor Foundation. Easy peasy, used up left overs from actual quilts and helped other groups working on filling requests for quilts for veterans.Good way to get back to sewing if you had to stop for a while.

I'm enjoying making Polaroid blocks for a little guy's quilt. They are fast and fairly mindless to sew, which means I can handle 100 interruptions from my kids and not forget where I was 🙂

I tend to do quick projects in the summer - tote bags, makeup cases, etc.

I am making "cot mattress sheets" this month! My #2 son has requested that I make him two sets of "sheets" for his camping cot mattresses. "You can make it out of any fabric, and maybe there is something in all that fabric you have that you don't want," he says. As a quilter I am thinking "Not my stash!", but as a Mom I said "Sure Son, when do you need them?" Sound familiar to anyone?

I just LOVE this pattern of the week-- because my sewing project of the Summer has been a 9 square Christmas Lapghan for my mother! I've only begun to quilt (I always loved my grandmother's quilts so much!) I'm using a pattern from your site here that does a small 9square in the center, and then a 12 sq. around it (of squares and triangles). As a first project-- I'm doing my best with it... how I wish I had waited for this pattern! (LOL). Thanks for the chance to win an iron that works so well! I'm currently laid up in a wheel chair for my 8th month from having shattered ankle due to Multiple Myeloma! It would come in handy for me! God bless!

I am a beginner quilter and my favourite project that I am working on this summer is Riley Blake's table runner for the month of May Bloom Where You are Planted.
Working with the pretty and bright fabric makes me so happy!

I love your Positively quilt and I’m going to make it ASAP. I really need this now as my husband has had 3 major health problem hit him in the last 2 weeks and I’m about at the end of my rope. But I know things will get better and this little reminder will help. I would love to win the iron also because my travel iron died on me yesterday. We got rain today like your little rain drops and that was great as we really needed it.

I would love to win the Olisa mini iron. During this quarantine summer, I've been working on the Chandelier quilt from the book, Charm School by Vanessa Goertzen. I didn't like the look of it when using the full pack of charm squares so I ended up adding some fabrics from my stash and dividing up the blocks into color groups. I now have 3 quilts out of that one package of squares. LOL! I love your blog posts and patterns. Thanks!

I've been a project bag making nut! I do a lot of cross stitch so I love making fun project bags for every project!

My favorite project this summer was my American Flag bench pillow. I have one for each month. This one I made my own pattern. Sewed it on 4th of July!

My very favorite project this summer was to make a quilt for my newest grandson. I used some Peter Pan fabric in beautiful pastel colors with a soft aqua minkey backing. He loves to snuggle on it.

I have been making seasonal tablerunners/toppers this summer. They are quick to make and not so heavy/warm when adding the binding.

I’ve just discovered your tutorials recently and I can safely say that you give the clearest, least-scary instructions I’ve ever seen! So thank you for giving beginners the confidence to experiment and practice their sewing

Well I'm SO glad!!
