Happy Valentine's Day! This red and white heart quilt is an old favorite. I think I made it about 10 years ago, but I still love getting it out every year.
It's also a good reminder for me that red and white quilts never get old. The pattern was from the Buggy Barn - I think it's called Heather. The pattern/book is no longer in print, but you could make something similar with all of the heart patterns available out there.
And here's one more fun way to celebrate today. If you've been following along with Pat Sloan and Quilt Jane's Splendid Sampler for the past year, than you know that they just reached the 100th quilt block pattern! Woohoo! Which means: time for some serious giveaways! Be sure to check out the Splendid Sampler blog for your chance to enter + all the details and links to other blogs joining in.
I got behind on my blocks, but seeing so many beautiful finishes has me motivated to keep making more. Slowly but surely. They're so fun to make - and such a great way to play with new, scrappy fabric and color combinations. You can read more about the block I contributed here. And if you're just getting started, here's all the info.
As proof that I'm getting older, I was having a classic senior moment last night and I'm not sure which reality is more disturbing: that I bought the Valentine's candy (for the kids to take to school) ahead of time and then hid it so well from the kids that now I can't find it OR that I just thought I bought the candy when in fact I did not. Oh dear. (Insert eye roll here.) Well, either way, my nice husband made a trip to WalMart at 9:45 at night to get the needed candy.
Finally, sending a bit of love your way. Don't forget to be gentle with yourself and those around you. Heaven knows we can use as much gentle and kind as possible these days. xo
Finally picked a prize winner for the Splendid Celebration. Thanks to all who entered and for your kind comments. xo
WINNER: KRISTEN February 14, 2017 at 7:03 pm
I love your blog. After reading for years, I finally got starting quilting myself! I’d love the fast ones because maybe fast is somewhat synonymous with easy?
Thanks for the chance. Also, thank you for the series for the beginner and making this art form attainable for newbies!

Robby
What a lovely thought in your quote there at the end. And you have a true valentine in a guy that loves you and the kids enough to go out and buy candy at bedtime! I think it's those kinds of things that show our love every bit as much as a fancy card and chocolates.
Sarah@123quilt
There's nothing quite like finding old, stale holiday candy that you hid and then forgot about. Happy Valentine's Day and thanks for the giveaway!
Luone
Ha! You are the best at "keeping it real" by admitting this. Are you sure someone didn't find the stash and have a midnight snack some evening? Oh - and I love the R&W quilt! Happy Valentine's Day!

Thanks for this gentle post. I needed the reminder to be gentle with myself- I'm usually pretty good with everyone else. Instead of going to cycling class today, after a long night up with a sick child, I am going to take a walk and listen to the Bible on CD. It won't burn as many calories but it will do wonders for my mind and my body.
Sharon
Hi Amy ! Thanks for the chance to win some of your beautiful patterns 🙂

Christine T
Happy Valentines Day! First time visitor here. I love scrappy quilts, whether they're large or small.
Putting things in a safe place only to forget where that "safe place" is is pretty standard!
Cathy Calloway
Love your blog and your beautiful quilts. Thanks for sharing
Dorothy Sorensen
My mom is a classic hide it and forget it person. She gave me a bag with candy for the grandkids along with Valentine's cards she had bought when I was growing up that she meant to have us send that we never did. We're talking maybe 20 year old cards now. I can almost guarantee she has presents stashed that she bought for Christmases long ago that she couldn't find in time that we have long (long) since outgrown. And, just to prove that I am her daughter, I had to put a reminder in my phone for me to not buy a birthday present for my youngest because we accidentally bought him an extra Christmas present and hid it in a closet. So don't feel too bad. ☺
Amy Smart
Haha!! That is hilarious! (I have a feeling my mom has presents from 20 years ago hidden somewhere too.)
Susie
What a beautiful quilt! I love red and white , too. I have had a few similar times when I hid something too well!
Susie
Sam
Love the heart quilt. Definitely on the to do list for next year!
Pam M
Love the sentiments expressed in the quote. We should all take it to heart. I'm splendidly on track to finish block #100 later today. Yippee!! You are not alone in being forgetful - I have to write myself notes all the time and attach them to the car keys, or tape a note to the frig door or pin one to the clothes I'm going to be wearing when I go out. And there was something else I had intended to write in this comment, but it's gone out of my head now. Duh!
Carasews
That quote made me cry. It was not a good day and it reminds me that I can try to be better tomorrow.
Amy Smart
Sending hugs to you! xo
Beth F
I loved all the Splenderettes--the community of quilters that grew around the Splendid Sampler & the support they offered! And your block, Goose on the Loose, was quite fun to make! Thanks!

Thank you so much for sharing that quote from Elder Ashton. He was the first General Authority I ever heard speak, and as a young woman I was so touched by what a kind, gentle man he was. He always had a special place in my heart, and that quote epitomizes his tender spirit.
mary
Just think, when/if you find the candy, you'll have a surprise treat 😀
Anita
Your blog gives me so much inspiration!
Lorna Nash
Your husband sound like a real sweetie, hope your children appreciated all your efforts, although in my experience its not till they become parents themselves that they realise all the work that went into giving them a lovely childhood. Good wishes to you and your family.

Haha, we remembered around the same time that we aren't supposed to send candy to school, unfortunately all the Valentines already had lollipops glued to them. Yup, we were those parents! The giveaway looks amazing! Getting ready to have baby #5 here's soon, I haven't finished #4's quilt yet and I'm stocking up on tops so I can hand quilt when I go on bed rest. Love your patterns and will definitely have a few in the pile this summer!

I had to search through a number of drawers before I found the valentine's card I'd hidden away for my husband. But I now know where I've hidden his birthday present! Let's hope I'll still remember in two weeks time!
Staci C.
Amy, I just recently discovered your blog! Is it embarrassing to say that I just made your heart on a string pillow? Thanks for all you do for our neighborhood and my family!
Margene Cook
Love that you participated in the Splendid Sampler. As well as your blog!
Just got back from a quilt retreat and still haven't found a project I was going to take with me.

Your Buggy Barn quilt is quite the envy! ~ I as well have those moments where I forget most every day! Bless you! and your husband for going to get the candy!
MoeWest
I got way behind with my sampler blocks but I'll continue making them this year. It's so wonderful to see what everyone has made.
Kathy LeBlanc
I made the buggy barn heart quilt a few years ago as well...I have no idea who I gave it to but I wish I had made one for myself as well.
Kathy Burnett
Reading your valentine day delima, so funny. Thank you for your participation and your give away.
Rosemaryflower
Our brains are so full of knowledge, important information and of course so much creativity (even hiding, yes I know) that we do forget some stuff. I love this valentine quilt and the quote, and your wise words.
There is too much anger and incivility. I do not like the lashing out.
We have to think about everything that is good - or everything that is God.
Shirley
What a fantastic quote, everybody needs to take it to heart. Thank you for a great giveaway........fingers crossing
Linda Menkes
What a fun quilt! I made a few pillows for Valentine's Day to start my decorations. You can never have too many reminders that we need to love, right?
Linda S
I hid some candy from myself so that I could avoid binging on the whole bag. I then forgot about if completely and when I finally remembered buying it, I couldn't remember where I hid it. Finally found it a few months later. (Sad thing is I am not even a senior yet, so I cannot blame it on a senior moment, sigh.) Thanks for the giveaway, hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day!

The quilt is darling! I found your blog on Pinterest and am so glad I did!
Becca
I had a moment of panic for losing my kids' valentines, too! Luckily, I had hidden them in a semi obvious place and only spent 10 minutes or so in panic mode...Yikes.
Karen L
I always forget to put things out for Valentines maybe if I made a Valentines quilt I would have better luck. Thank you for the quote, the world could definitely need more understanding. Great blog by the way.
Paula S
I loved the idea of getting two block patterns each week. I'm putting the blocks together with sashing and can't wait to see it finished.

Amy, I loved your quote and related thought at the end of the post. We could all benefit from more kindness in the world:-).
Ramona Murray
I have been reading your blog for quite awhile now and really enjoy it. I'm the queen of putting a gift or card in a 'safe" place and not having a clue where I put it.
Erika
Great quote! And, I hope your husband found something other than chalky-tasting conversation hearts for your kids! 🙂
Sandra B
Glad to hear that others have lost track of something, too....I "hid" a Christmas gift and when it came time to wrap it, I could not remember where it was....it finally showed up in late January, thank goodness!! Of course, as soon as I saw it, I remembered thinking it would be a good hiding place!! Guess that thinking was right! Don't think I will use that place again!
Would love to win a copy of your book...thanks for the giveaway... And good luck to all who enter!!
Karen
So sad that this is the end. I was always looking forward to a new quilt block in my inbox.

I seem to have a problem with starting a quilt and then sitting it aside for just a moment....I just want to make this one block with this fabric that is so perfect for it; then what happens, two months later I find the quilt I originally set aside to begin with. LOL. I would love to win your give away prize! Thank you for the opportunity to win. Have a great day!
Dawn
Very generous giveaway. Loved the quote at the end. And yes we need a little more kindness these days.

Hello from the now famous town of Oroville, CA! Thanks for your generosity!
Heidi K
Love your heart quilt! I hate when I hide things are then forget where I put them. I did that on April Fool's Day once as a child. I hid a bunch of stuff as a joke and then couldn't remember where it was. Not the best joke!
Linda Edwards
Hi Amy. Thank you for your contribution to the Splendid Sampler. It has been an enjoyable journey! I loved being introduced to all the designers.
Gwen Wehner
Regarding senior moments - remember: age happens, but growing older is all in your mind!

Jan Bolton
The quote you shared is perfect to pass along to everyone. Thanks for sharing. Your patterns and book very inspiring. Oh yes, the forgetfulness get worse with age (I am almost 62) I can attest to from having gone there. So...good luck with that. lol
Patricia Ludwiczak
I hid the candy, but I still snuck in and ate it before the big day! I really enjoyed visiting so many new blogs from the Splendid Sampler. Thanks!

dianna
What a nice husband! My husband would do the same and has done anything for the kids and continues doing stuff for the kids, even though, they're adult children now.
Holly
Your valentine candy sounds like what always happens to my children's stocking stuffers - I can never find them because I have hidden them somewhere in the house. Thank you for the quilting inspiration. I enjoyed the quote - everyone could use a little more gentleness.
Tiffany
Why hello! I love your hearts quilt.
Debbie landry
I can relate to the hiding things an not being able to find them when you intend to get them out. Just found some things in a drawer yesterday intended for stocking stuffers. Well there's always next year!!
Sally
I think I have that Buggy Barn pattern! I'll have to dig it out.
Mary Wright
It has been a great year. I admit on Thursday, I was a little lost when there was no block! Now, time to put them altogether.
Kerri Arredondo
I have enjoyed "meeting" all the different designers! So many people I would have never known existed. I have been exposed new techniques & design ideas that will influence my quilting path. This has been such a great experience despite not having completed many blocks at all. I have loved the journey!
Therese
Love your Hearts quilt
Gwendolyn Humphries
We forget things in our family. It is a holiday tradition. That is how you can get an unexpected holiday present in the summer. Pretty nice. Thanks for the giveaway.
Rhonda
Thanks for the chance to win! I love your patterns; I'm currently making a variation of your "Retro Christmas" pattern, but with non-Christmas fabrics.
Charlotte Burns
Love your quilt and the candy story - glad I'm not the only one. I actually found a bag of kisses hidden away in a drawer a few days before Valentine's day this year, forgot when I bought it tho'....
Anita J. Tinlin
Hope it's not too late to enter the giveaway!
Tina
Thanks so much for your inspiration. Would love to win your generous prize.

I made 4 quilt tops with 25 blocks in each for a total of 100 blocks. I have loved every minute of this journey. My favorite memory is meeting up with designers and other quilters at a shop in Syracuse during the summer! Thanks Katie

this was a splendid journey (not a race) I am getting there. I have 11 blocks to complete(10) will be handwork so that will take awhile. I won"t rush the process. I'm anxious for the book

I had to laugh...this week I'm searching for my Social security card. It's in a special place...I've torn the house apart looking for. Finding some things I forgot about was fun. Love your talents!

Hi! Thank you for a chance to win! I lost our dogs treats I bought for her stocking at Christmas. Though for sure I must have tossed out with some shopping bags. Recently cleaned out our closet and there they were right where I put them and think I looked at least a dozen times.
