Candy Cane Christmas Ornament Tutorial

Ready for a quick little Christmas project? Guest blogger Stephanie from Swoodson says has a fun Candy Cane handmade Christmas ornament that is simple and easy to make – would be a fun one to mass-produce for gifts and would look festive as a cute tag with gifts!

Hi! I’m Stephanie from Swoodson Says and am happy to be a guest blogger here today! I love making Christmas ornaments to use up scraps, give as gifts, and decorate my tree without spending a bunch of money. I’m sharing a classic candy cane pattern that you can sew up by the dozen; they would make great gift tags too! If you’re motivated to keep scrap busting, go check out all my other handmade Christmas ornament tutorials here.

Ready to make a scrappy applique candy cane ornament?

Supplies

  • Red scraps of quilting cotton
  • Fat quarter of quilting cotton
  • Red thread
  • Iron
  • Microtip scissors
  • Heat n bond lite
  • Batting scraps
  • Thin ribbon or embroidery floss
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Pinking shears

Candy Cane Ornament Instructions

Step 1 Trace the “stripe” pieces onto the Heat N Bond’s paper-y side.

Step 2  Trace the candy cane shape on to the white cotton with a pencil or washable marking pen.

Step 3  Use your iron and follow Heat N Bond instructions to fuse it on the wrong side of the red fabric, then cut out along the lines.

Step 4  Peel off the paper backing from the stripes and lay them out on your traced candy cane. Use your iron to adhere.

Step 5  Layer the candy cane on top of two layers of quilt batting, and a larger white cotton fabric scrap on the back. You can pin or clip if you want here, but it’s not necessary since it is so small.

Step 6   Sew along the edges of each stripe applique and then along your pencil line, marking the outline of the candy cane. (Get more tips on how to applique in this post).

Step 7 Trim around the edges with pinking shears for a festive look!

Step 8   Use your floss or ribbon and thread it through the layers, knotting to make a loop and you’re done!
