Introducing the 2022 Riley Blake Quilt Block Challenge

Last Modified: May 2, 2023 by Amy · This post may contain affiliate links · This blog generates income via ads · 10 Comments

At the beginning of the January Riley Blake Designs kicked off their 2022 Quilt Block Challenge! It's taken me a couple of weeks to get my act together and pick out my fabric, but I've finally caught up on the first three blocks for January.

Liberty of London prints for the 2022 Riley Blake Quilt Block Challenge

Part of my delay was trying to decide what fabric and colors I wanted to use this year. As I mentioned previously, this pile of Liberty florals from the Flower Show Midsummer and Flower Show Sunrise collections have been sitting on my sewing table, looking so pretty and tempting. I've been waiting for inspiration to strike as to how to use them - and then voila! Here it is!

I decided to make monochromatic blocks with the classic Liberty florals mixed with solids and blenders to help the prints really pop. At this point I'm mixing in whatever solids and blenders I have in my stash, but going forward I'll try and get Confetti Cottons so that I can share colors when possible.

This week's Autumn Leaf quilt block pattern was designed by Kristy Lea.  You can find the printable pattern for this block as well as a video showing you how to make it here.

and Block 2 - Sweetheart Block designed by Bev McCullough - click here for block pattern + video.

I changed my block slightly. Simplified a little since I was playing catchup and rearranged some of the pieces because I didn't love how they were working with my fabric choices. (Did you know it's always okay to modify a block however you want it? You are always the boss of your own quilt. 😉 )

Once again, this challenge will consist of 3 new free 10" x 10" quilt block patterns a month on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tuesdays with the 4th Tuesday as a catchup week. You can read more about this year's challenge and get the fabric requirements and patterns for the all of the released blocks here at any time.

A total of 16 quilt block designs will be released through May + the final layout instructions right at the end. You can see my finished quilt from last year's finished challenge quilt here. This year's layout will be completely different! I'm excited to sew along and have a fun Liberty floral quilt ready just in time for summer! 🙂

I love your fabric choices. In fact, I always do, and I'm always amazed by that because it's the hardest part of quilting for me! You were working on a big house block at some point in the fall, I think, and you told us the name of the 2017 magazine where you first found the block. Can you tell me the name of the magazine again, please, as I would like to order it (you indicated it's still in print)? I'm kind of a house block fanatic, but I'm obviously overlooking it...I've searched your previous posts multiple times.

Yes - I last showed the block in this post: https://www.diaryofaquilter.com/new-christmas-sewing-projects/

You can now buy the pattern directly from the maker, rather than looking for the out-of-print magazine. 🙂 https://www.etsy.com/listing/696943454/all-through-the-house-pattern

Thanks, Amy, for the changes on RBD 2. Love yours! Was already planning my remake of the block because it was so challenging. Thanks for letting us know we can make the blocks our own! Always love your postings here!

I love your color choices. The blocks have a very cheery look to them and I think when you get all the blocks completed, you will have a terrific quilt. Thank you for this post. Inspiring.

Thank you! Sorry to know the magazine is now out of print, but grateful to know I can still access the pattern directly from the maker.

Hello! Please please please continue to show us your blocks!! I'm loving the inspiration! I've got bits of Liberty fabric that I was wanting to use as well for the RBD challenge and wasn't sure how to pair them with "regular" fabric since the Liberty is so slick and special. I'll have to do some research on needle type and stitching size and such. Thank you!!!! maria

Lee Monroe wrote a great article about working with lightweight fabrics like Lawns and Voile that might be helpful: https://www.diaryofaquilter.com/sewing-with-voile-or-lawn/
