It’s week 5 of the Riley Blake quilt block challenge – each week we’ve been making a simple, classic quilt block. Each of these blocks can be included in a sampler quilt, or made on repeat for a quilt of their own. So many options! This week we are playing with Nine Patch Quilt Blocks and I’ve got a lot of Nine Patch quilt tutorials and inspiration for you.
Above are my blocks for this week. As with the last 4 weeks I’m making blocks in 6″ x 6″ and 12″ x 12″ (finished) sizes.
Nine Patch Quilt Block Tutorial
This week the block tutorial is by Christopher Thompson of the Tattooed Quilter.
You can find the tutorial for both Nine Patch quilt block sizes here.
(I promise I double tested the link this time.)
Once again I’m making my blocks out of my latest collection, Sugarhouse Park and coordinating Riley Blake woven ginghams.
Nine Patch Quilt Inspiration
Here is some of the quilt inspiration and tutorials using a classic nine patch quilt block. This gray and white crib-size version is one of my most recent finishes. You can find the tutorial for this classic Irish Chain crib quilt here.
This crib quilt is another 9-patch variation called Scrappy Nines. I’ve got a tutorial here.
You can find the tutorial for this scrappy, classic nine-patch variation mini quilt here.
Another scrappy nine-patch option is to add some simple sashing around the scrappy blocks to make a quick and easy table topper or mini quilt. Tutorial here.
This scrappy blue and white Irish Chain variation is a pattern from Amanda Jean’s (aka Crazy Mom Quilts) book No Scrap Left Behind. This one was so much fun to make – I’d love to make another someday!
This version is a throw size version from my own pattern called A Stitch In Time. (Also available in Twin size instructions.) This version is also Jelly Roll (Rolie Polie) friendly.
You can find the previous blocks for the quilt along linked below If you’re sewing along with us make sure to use the hashtag #RBDBlockChallenge on Instagram. You can see a lot of other blocks here.
Week 1 – Churn Dash
Week 2 – Log Cabin
Week 3 – Friendship Star
Week 4 – Economy Block
A few people have asked me about fabric requirements for this quilt along. Because this is an informal block challenge without a specific pattern, there’s not a specific list of fabric requirements. It’s a great project for using up stash or leftover scraps.
As I mentioned, I will be putting my blocks together at the end (mid June). Once that happens, I’ll have a better idea of the fabric amounts for the finished quilt. 🙂
Happy stitching!
