Are you familiar with the term Quilt Facing? To be honest, neither was I! Basically Quilt Facing is an alternative to binding or finishing the raw edges of a quilt. Since this concept was new to me, I'm really excited today to have creative contributor Shereece Nicole here sharing a little more about what Facing is, when to use Facing for finishing a quilt and a video tutorial on how to finish a quilt with a Quilt Facing technique.
Take it away, Shereece:
Hi there fibre friends!
I’m Shereece Nicole of Sew Hooked on Treasures (the spot for quilty gems to help you maximize your sewing time). Amy has given me the opportunity to come back to share this fun video tutorial with you on how to face a quilt.
What is Quilt Facing?
Facing a quilt is an alternative to binding. The fabric strips are created the same way.
Where binding adds that bit of an extra, albeit narrow, border to a quilt, facing does not.
So when you don’t want that added element, facing is the perfect option! It won’t show from the front of the quilt but the edges of the quilt will still be neatly finished on the back.
When to Use Facing
You’ll see facing used often in art quilts; however, it can be used on any quilt from mug rug to bed size!
To give you another example, I opted for facing to finish this Generations quilt. I wanted the top as is because the design goes to the edge. It felt like binding would have altered the infinity pool-like look I was trying to achieve.
When it comes down to it, it’s really a personal, artistic choice.
Time Saving Tip
Glue basting really comes in handy before hand sewing (the ideal method) the facing to the back of the quilt because the strips are wider than you’re probably used to working with. Regular school white glue works.
Watch the video above for demonstration of how to attach facing strips to your quilt back as well as how I glue baste the finished strips to the back of the quilt.
I’m a huge fan of the Roxanne glue because of the fine tip it comes with and I have yet to experience it getting clogged.
I hope you found this video tutorial for Quilt Facing helpful!
