Welcome back to Week 3 of the Pine Hollow Patchwork Forest Quilt Along!
If you're new and wondering what is going on - check out all of the information in these previous posts:
Week 1 - Introduction and tips for choosing fabric
Week 2 - Video demonstration of how to make the Improv Patchwork Tree Quilt Block + make 28 small trees
Here are all 28 of my small trees. I'm having a great time playing with the low-volume red and white color palette. I'm even trying to keep the red somewhat muted so that it reads more subtle. I keep playing with my traditional reds and seeing how they'll do and they're just too loud and stick out like a sore thumb.
I've had fun incorporating fabrics from my three fabric collections (Gingham Girls, Sunnyside Ave, and Gretel) in so far. I've got some Sugarhouse Park red and whites to add when I make the rest of the blocks.
This week your assignment is to create the 23 Medium Size Tree Blocks in the Pine Hollow Pattern.
Or at least 15 more blocks if you are doing the Patchwork Forest Quilt Tutorial.
Now, here are a few tips for this week's blocks:
With the first round of 28 small blocks, the rectangles were generously sized with lots of extra fabric for squaring up. (In fact I had a couple of people email me about the points of their trees getting chopped off in the process. My suggestion there is to cut smaller triangles so that they fit within the squared-up block size.)
As I started testing my Medium size blocks I realized that the starting rectangle is not as generous - you will have less to square off. If you want to be on the safer side, and cutting larger starting rectangles is an option, you may want to cut them just a little bigger. But honestly, you should be fine with the ones in the pattern, just be aware there will be less to trim.
As with the first round, I highly recommend making a couple of practice blocks first, just to get the feel for the bigger size, before you start cutting up all of the blocks.
Thanks again to all of you who are playing along. I'm so glad that you are having fun with these trees!
Thanks so much for playing along! I've loved having a peek into what you are all making with this pattern.
And I'm having so much fun looking at all of the combinations that you are using! As much as I love this color palette, I have to admit there have been multiple times when I've felt tempted to start something new, based on what one of you is doing. I guess I'm just going to accept that there are more of these quilts in my future...

I apologize. I am not quilting along. However, yesterday, I wore my #Quiltnerd shirt while working on my Maker Valley Christmas quilt kit. How weird is that? Also, the other day on NPR, I heard a story about a Bob Ross art exhibit in conjunction with the commemoration of his death 20 years ago. I can't paint worth a darn, but Bob Ross did have a soothing voice. That's the kind of attitude you have to have when using the seam ripper!

Haha! I love it! Clearly we are joined by some cosmic coincidences right now. Carry on my #QuiltNerd friend!

I think the starting rectangles for the medium trees are just perfect sized!
I love your low volume red and white trees, so pretty!! Thank you for a fun pattern and quilt along 🙂
Amy
Thank you, Christine!

I listened to the Bob Ross piece on NPR right before reading this post too -- lol!

Yikes! I just squared up all my medium blocks to the finished size (stayed up too late last night), any suggestions to salvage the quilt?

I just did the same Paula.Jane! Any suggestions? What did you end up doing?
