I'm excited to share a fun project I've been working on this week using the Perfectly Pieced January subscription box from ME Time Delivered. This month's block is a traditional Log Cabin quilt block. If forced to choose a favorite quilt block, I would probably go with the Log Cabin. So I'm thrilled to have a log cabin block variation that is perfectly-pieced using a foundation-piecing method in the hoop of my embroidery machine.
Do you have a sewing machine with embroidery function? Maybe you got a new one for Christmas? If that is he case, this is the perfect project for you. But even if you don't have an embroidery machine, but you like the fabric you see, there are some options for you too. Read on.
If you're new to Perfectly Pieced, here's a little bit about how it works: Perfectly Pieced is a genius system for foundation piecing perfect quilt blocks on stabilizer inside the hoop of a sewing machine equipped with a machine embroidery arm. (I’m using the Baby Lock Destiny II.)
Each month there is a brand new subscription box containing:
- One new quilt block design + the digital embroidery files for foundation-piecing the blocks in four sizes (2×2, 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8)
- A high-quality curated fabric bundle (with enough fabric to complete the project)
- Printed, step-by-step instructions for making that month's block
- Downloadable instructions for making multiple (usually 4-5) different project options
- Exclusive background quilting files customized block-by-block files
- An exclusive all-over quilting design that's compatible with the Kimberbell Clear Blue Tiles system for embroidery machines
- One coordinating spool of Glide thread
- One notion
- A collectible pin featuring the block of the month
And all of that is available for $49 + shipping. It's a HUGE value for the price.
Another option, if you only want the digital block and quilting files is the Digital subscription option.
Foundation Piecing Log Cabins in a Sewing Machine Embroidery Hoop
As I mentioned, each month you receive the embroidery files to make that month's quilt block in 4 different sizes (finished): 2" x 2", 4" x 4", 6" x 6" and 8" x 8". That gives you infinite options for playing with blocks, substituting these blocks in other projects etc.
Another variation for each block is that you can either only piece the fabric (foundation-pieced on a stabilizer foundation) OR you can add a layer of batting to piece the block on and then add the custom quilting design and quilt each block individually. See the 6" x 6" block above and below. This is what I did with the blocks I used to make the flying-geese stocking.
Check out the perfect 2" x 2" log cabin block above. The foundation-piecing method makes them tiny but perfect every single time!
The quilt block digital file stitches the block design 'template' right onto the stabilizer so that you can easily see where you lay your fabric before adding the next piece.
I had fun stitching out the various block sizes to get a feel for how they turned out. This is a block I see myself using for multiple projects - I think I'll make another stocking using the log cabins!
If you have a large hoop for your embroidery machine, you can even stitch multiple blocks in one hoop.
Perfectly Curated Fabric Bundles
One of my favorite things about the Perfectly Pieced subscription box is the curated fabric bundles. These bundles are custom made by the folks at Perfectly Pieced and because these combinations are curated across multiple fabric companies, they're not available anywhere else. And boy do they have a great eye. I've LOVED every bundle I've played with.
Here's a peek at the January bundle:
I love it - such a pretty muted, winter color palette. If you don't have an embroidery machine, but you see one of their fabric bundles that you like, they now have some of the fabric bundles available in their new online shop!
Machine Quilting in an Embroidery Hoop
The other favorite thing that I love about the Perfectly Pieced system is their gorgeous variety of machine quilting files. These also come as digital files included with each month's subscription.
These are quilting designs that can be used with the Kimberbell Clear Blue Tiles machine quilting system. This is hands-down the most effective (and pretty way) I've found to machine quilt projects on my own machine.
This month's all over machine quilting design is this beautiful loopy-feather design. It's another design I will definitely use on future projects as well.
As you can see I used the 8" x 8" block as well as a mini 2" x 2" block to make this log cabin 20" x 20" pillow.
After machine quilting the top with a layer of batting, I added a back and binding using this method for finishing a pillow. (The new binding clips included with this month's box also came in handy!)
Another very satisfying project finish thanks to Perfectly Pieced! You can order and/or read more about this month's box here as well as preview the February box!
You can read more details about the Perfectly Pieced system and how it works here. You can put your subscription on hold at any time.
I've had a lot of fun with each of the projects I've made from this subscription. I love the variety of projects and options. Here are a few past projects I've made with Perfectly Pieced monthly boxes including: January ’23, July '23, and November ’23.
