It's always interesting to look back at the end of a year and see what projects had the biggest impact or interest. I can safely say at the beginning of the year I never would have predicted a post about "how to make face masks" would be the most popular. BUT, here we are! Here is a list of the most popular quilt and sewing tutorials from 2020 on Diary of a Quilter.
It was fun to look back at what other projects or tutorials seemed to resonate most. In addition to facemask tutorials, baby quilts and learning how to quilt or make classic traditional quilt blocks are always a hit.
This is still by far my favorite method for making facemasks. They're the most comfortable to wear and talk with - I never find myself needing to readjust this one. They're also very simple to resize to fit any face. Baby Quilts are always a hit - this post shares two classics. A simple patchwork and a tutorial for an Economy Block quilt, perfect for fussy-cutting fun prints. Elizabeth Chappell's guest post featuring a strip-pieced short-cut method for making a Buffalo Check patchwork quilt was a hit. Any time I make and share a flannel patchwork quilt, it's an instant hit. This one was no exception. Log Cabin Quilts blocks are always one of my favorites - this post shares a Log Cabin tutorial that was part of the Riley Blake Quilt Block Challenge + other Log Cabin inspiration. Another popular baby quilt tutorial - a classic 9-patch quilt is easy to make with strip-piecing short-cuts and always looks fantastic. I love flag quilts and the tutorial for these fast, flying flags was a popular one this summer! Another one of the most popular block tutorials in the Riley Blake quilt block challenge was this Economy Block - with instructions for 3 different sizes of blocks. This post also has a link to all 12 classic block tutorials. Did you know that entry level sewing machines sold out throughout the country last Spring? That means there were LOTS of people wanting to learn what else they could make once they were done sewing face masks. This post is perfect for anyone who wants to make their first quilt and shows how using Precut Charm Squares makes that quick and ea A fun Plus quilt tutorial/free pattern available in mini quilt and crib-size quilt options. Here is one more bonus for the list. It's not a tutorial, but it felt so relevant this year. It's crazy to look back at when I posted this in March, not really knowing what the future months would hold. Well, Grace Coolidge's quote held true: Sewing absolutely provided a stabilizer in times of perplexity and distress. (You can still find the free printable for this quote in this post.)Top 10 Sewing and Quilt Tutorials of 2020

Amy, I love your tutorials and your patterns. I like your flying flags pattern but couldn’t bring myself to make it. We’re you aware that the upside down flag is a distress signal? I wasn’t sure if you were just unaware or making a comment about our country during the pandemic. It just made me sad to think about this beautiful country in such a distressed state.

This was meant purely in a whimsical folk art tradition, nothing political. I had the thought that the rotating flags would not appeal to everyone, so there are directions included to make flags that are always shown with the blue field in the top left corner, whether they are vertical or horizontal. 🙂

Amy did this come at the right time. I plan to do a King size Gingham/Buffalo Plaid quilt. I have the fabric and just need to get started. I headed over to Quilters Candy and printer her pattern. Thanks so much!!!

Happy New Year to you and yours. Love your postings, have been a fan for a while now; and have been wanting to ask, "what is your design wall made of"??
Amy
Great question! I'm frequently asked about my Design Wall and finally put all of the information in this post: https://www.diaryofaquilter.com/2020/12/quilt-design-wall-options.html
