We are almost finished with the Pine Hollow Quilt Along. I am LOVING all of the variations I've seen in the works!
If you've been following along with the Pine Hollow pattern then you know that we are nearly done piecing all of the blocks!
It's definitely not too late to play along or catch up if you feel you've fallen behind. I purposely front loaded the majority of the tree blocks at the beginning of the QAL and built in lots of catch-up time at the end. You're welcome. 😉
Next week we'll be talking about assembly. The date to have your quilt top pieced isn't for two weeks, so you've got plenty of time to catch up - or, if you're like me, to manage all of the other projects you've got going simultaneously. 🙂
If you missed the previous weeks you can find them here:
Week 1 – Introduction and tips for choosing fabric
Week 2 – Video demonstration of how to make the Improv Patchwork Tree Quilt Block + make 28 small trees
Week 3 - Make 23 Medium size Trees
Week 4 Tips for making "Wonky" Improv Stars
This week your assignment is to piece the three remaining large tree blocks (and some baby wonky stars, if you want them).
Pine Hollow Quilt Along-Week 5
The measurements for these large blocks are part of the the Pine Hollow Patchwork Forest Pattern.
If you're not following the Pine Hollow pattern, and just doing the original Improv Patchwork Forest, then make at least 12 more trees. 🙂
Here is a demo of how I added my baby star block to the center of the large trees. I recommend using small, non-directional prints for the trees with stars so that that the stars show up and so that it's easy to piece them in.
Remember, this is improv. We're not stressing about perfection. By now you've had plenty of practice of just sewing and going and squaring up, so hopefully these are fun.
And since there's not mathematical science for adding baby stars to your trees, you could theoretically add them to any tree size!

Your blocks are sew cute, Amy! Some day I hope to have time to make this quilt!

Hi Amy: I had emailed you the other day about the layout. I think I just needed to walk away from it. I came back the next day and it all made sense right away. I got the whole quilt put together - I LOVE IT so much. I think I'm going to quilt it up with a minky back and gift to my son and his family for Christmas. This post really explained the mini star in the tree. Mine didn't turn out so well...wish I had seen this first. Oh well, it's still adorable. I will definitely make another one of these. I love you red and white version.
Amy
Hooray! I'm so glad it came together and I'm glad you love it. 🙂
